Hey all! Thanks for watching! We know 70,000 miles isn't all that "high mileage". These are the oldest and highest mileage 3.5's we received over the last week or so. This is where YOU Come in. If you have a high mileage ecoboost (150,000+) we want to hear about it. Send us a submission: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pfAwYr3szVM.html We'll have more detailed instructions soon but we specifically want to know about reliability and longevity. Used the updated plugs from Ford and it’s been great ever since. That, Oil changes every 5,000 miles, and an O2 sensor is all I have had to do. The F150 EcoBoost engines can hit 200k+ miles easily if maintained properly. That so called “laundry list” of problems was just maintenance. And that rattle noise is the phasers, not the chains. @@seanee573 well, according to a Ford bulletin, the rattle does not affect the longevity or durability of the engine. But we all know that’s just to keep warranty claims down. If it’s just a small rattle during startup and you can live with it, I wouldn’t worry about it. However, If it gets to the point where it continues to rattle after startup, I’d get it addressed sooner rather than later.

Turbos have been used all around the world for nearly 60 years and have improved dramatically in the past 20 years. For turbo diesels in Australia one thing we watch closely is exhaust gas temperatures as turbos on boost towing up a hill can get extremely hot. Modern diesels will cut fuel if they get too hot, so it will be interesting to test the cooling capacity and time before the motor goes into safe mode. Trucks driven within Ford's specified towing limits, serviced regularly and given time to warm up and cool down after intense driving should have their turbos last 150,000 miles+ before wearing out.

With dual scroll twin turbo engines its essential to flush the coolant every 30000 miles. The turbos cook the coolant at shut down. Also you do not want to use the 10000 mile interval on oil changes. I would recommend 5000 miles or less with full synthetic.

I had a 2011 that was a really solid truck. I traded it in with 155k on the clock. I never had any major issues with it. I would get misfires and have to change the plugs. I was running a tuner and read that this could cause plugs to foul up quickly. I used to change my plugs every 25k so it wasn't much of an issue. The plugs back then we're only about $4 each for the Motorcraft plugs. It only took about 20-30 minutes to swap all of them. Ultimately I made the mistake of buying a travel trailer that was way too big for the truck. It was a power issue, it was a tail wagging the dog issue. In windy conditions that truck would move around a lot. You could definitely feel the weight. I traded it on an F-350, and now I never feel the weight.

I put new cam phasers and a timing chain on my dad's '11 f150 ecoboom at around 60k miles. It's really not a bad job to do, you don't need to pull the front clip , just intake/coolant piping and you can pull the front cover. It's also his own fault for ruining the phasers, going ridiculously long between oil changes and on cheap oil.
@joshnc101

I have a 2013 F-150 EB FX4, bought it 3 years ago with 27k miles, now about to pass 123k. I use it regularly for work running swimming pool routes. Every once in a while if it sits long enough like for 3 days strait, it'll have the cam phaser or timing chain rattle at startup. Doesn't seem to affect how it runs. The only remote issue thats ongoing right now is the front timing cover leaks oil right at the top corner where oil is able to get on the exhaust manifold, so sometimes when sitting still and idling I'd get a wiff burning oil through the vents. Otherwise hasn't seen a shop visit for any kind of mechanical failure. I know they've been kinda hit or miss with some problems, some have stretching timing chains, cam phasers going bad, turbos failing or leaking coolant, intercoolers filling up with water on the first couple year models. Oh yeah cant forget about carbon build up on intake valves but that's real common on direct injection engines. But as for deeper inside the engine itself, I haven't heard a single thing about one non-tuned blowing a piston or something along those lines, because that's all what a lot of truck guys were preaching on about when these first hit the market. "It's a small over stressed turbo engine that will blow up in no time, tough and strong v8 or bust!"

IF you run them reasonably hard such that Intercooler condensation doesn't build and you change the oil meticulously - it'll last forever The IC was just too big until the 2015 design and the Direct Injection causes fuel dilution that resulting in the timing chain stretch if you extend the oil change intervals I've not had fouled plug issues but I change them every 60K KM. I believe the Gen 1 Motor was the best one, as long as you: Drill the IC if necessary Change oil every 6k KM using a good synthetic Change the plugs more often Catch Can if you want Plug in the Truck if it gets colder than -15C (again to prevent timing chain stretch) The Gen 2 - I've been told has even worse timing chain issues even though they changed the routing The big Shop in town has said the Gen 1 eco has been the BEST motor they've seen, even tuned hard... there is a lot to day about the Mazda/Ford 3.5 Duratec motor design fdfIts like the Gen 2 is the new version of the 2nd Gen 5.4 triton with the 3v - just using the F150 as a platform to play around, while the 2v 5.4 was used in the E350's since 97 this Gen 1 was put into so many platforms including the current Transit - detuned to 310 HP but still absolutely a beast in its application. Again, its just a DI and boosted version of a Duratec which clearly was engineered right.

Fast forward to 4/2020 and at over 150,000 miles now on the odometer, the only repairs that this truck has needed so far has been just the basic maintenance needs, ie oil services, tires, transfer case, differential service , etc... no water pump, power steering or external part issues or failures, Haven’t even had to do the brakes yet, but have to say that they are close to needing to be replaced. They need catch cans. I have torn down 2 engine cores for that I can’t say for sure but carbon and gunk buildup I would say 170 to 200k. They were both 2013 to 2014. I just finished rebuilding my new work truck 2013 with 148k. Blades on turbo’s were pretty gummed up and internally gritty. One had a cracked housing on exhaust side so that was interesting. No others I broke down had that of 6 turbos total. Valves were Horrible! Lots of time cleaning valves. Chain had grown just shy of 3/4 of an inch over the new timing chain. New cam sprockets and just about everything else while I had the engine out. Also rear main seal was leaking but most of that was actually coolant line seals at the block for the turbos and some from the vacuum pump. Corrosion seems mild to major. Would be much better if things were ceramic coated and other things just better paint. My next project is to put an 3.5l eco boost in my 06 along with 2013 interior. I have a company vehicle, 2017 f-150 with the 3.50 eco boost. It has 140,000 miles. I had the same issue with the spark plugs. Other than that it has been problem free. I’m ordering a new one soon I’m getting the exact same truck.

2015 3.5 eco boost. Just rolled 84,000 miles. Service schedule is set and maintained by my dealer. Literally just a new belt at 50k ish brakes at 65k and my 3rd set of wipers... truck is all stock. Got over 55k on the original tires even.

I've had my 2012 3.5 EcoBoost crew cab for about a year now. Had a 120 thousand miles when I bought it... about 135 now. Not long after purchasing I had a coil pack go bad. Was completely stock when I got it. Recently I've added catback exhaust.. coldair intake... SCT tuner with mpt prx93 tune. Absolutely love the truck.... will absolutely embarrass any 5.3 or 6.2 chevy... and will gap new 5.7 dodge rams. The only truck I've had stay with me was a highly modified duramax... but was still outrunning him. I am having the rattle issue on start up sometimes...

My 2011 3.5 EB has over 100,000 miles and runs like a top. It had the typical timing chain wear fixed under warranty and EPAS failure just recently but apart from regular maintenance, all is good (knock on wood).

@@johnpurdum8126 get a supercharger... I have one and my truck is a bullet. Picked it up for $400 off of Ebay (it's for a mustang, but it's the same motor) and another $200 I had the intake and drains. Installed my pulley, deleted my A/C and ran the belt over the supercharger, got a 5star tune, and bam, I whoop on the ricers... lol

The second GEN 2.7 fixed a lot of the problems from the first GEN. It is a much more reliable engine, now more refined.

I loved my 13' F150 Ecoboost all the way up until about 100K miles. I did plugs at 60K, did front rotors and pads around 60K as well and changed my oil and filter and that was pretty much it for Maint. Zero issues up until that point. Since then I've had to change the timing chain due to the startup rattle ($3K job), I have recurrent engine misfires on cyl 6. I started with replacing the coil and all the plugs again and gapped to .30" and I'm still having missfire issues. I even drilled the weep hole which leaks like crazy. I'm getting close to losing faith in this engine. I'm going to try and clean out my MAF sensor and throttle body and clean my CAC to see if that makes a difference. Up until 100K miles I absolutely loved this truck. It tows like crazy and has so much power but with the constant issues I don't trust it anymore. If I do another F150 I'll go with the 5.0 Coyote. I've heard the newer eco boosts are trouble free but I just can't get myself to trust that engine. Sorry Ford.

I have a 2012 eco-boost with 112k. The most annoying issue that I have been dealing with since I bought it last year is the slip yoke binding and kicking. Removing the drive shaft and lubing the slip yoke fixed the issue so far. I was worried it was going to bitch up my rear diff.

I know this is a bit late, but to the fella with the 2nd white truck that had overheating issues, having the license plate mounted on the grille instead of the bumper will decrease airflow through the radiator and make it harder for it to keep the engine cool. I'm sure the sticking thermostat was your main culprit though. Just food for thought, truck looks great!

Let's see them reach 300k with no engine problems like my 1998 F150 4.2l single cab. I've hauled plenty of loads of wood, coal, water, and gravel a bunch of times. She rattles a bit with old oil, but still hauls ass. I've had one trans rebuild, but everything runs good.

Original owner, stock 2012 lariat 3.5 ecob. 4x4, 208,000 miles, no repairs, just maintenance. X-replaced rotors at 200k just because I was installing pads, and why not at 200k, only broken item- the gas tank door. Only towed about 5000 of those miles, approx 20,000 off road - gravel and farm, driven between MO-LA, MO-TX, MO-CO,

TFL Truck is a great source of info. I’ve been skeptical of the 3.5, but after watching TFL for years 💪🏻👍🏻 I finally bought a 2019 F150 3.5. I will definitely say the eco boost has out performed my 2013 5.0...oh yeah the mpg increase is a benefit too. Thanks again.

I used to have a 3.5 Eco in a 12th gen truck. The only engine related issue I had was the rattle on some cold starts. This was a known issue with the cam phasers for which a TSB was issued. It was fixed under warranty.

@@startingtech3900 it’s a fairly expensive repair. I’m thinking around 1,200 or more. But the good news is that while the rattle on startup is embarrassing, it doesn’t cause long term damage. Ford has a software update that MAY keep it come getting worse. You might consider getting it.

95,000 Miles and broke a front coil spring (not really ecoboost related) and from the dealership the rear diff lip seal... Brakes on all 4 corners and a couple sets of tires... Had an overboost code thrown, replaced a $20 sensor. Replaced the rear door wiring harness because the door was "ajar" and wouldnt lock/unlock... Thats about it. Pretty happy. So really, a $20 sensor is the only ecoboost related item.

I consider 200,000 miles the break over point of "higher mileage". Headed for 300k on a 2000 ranger 3.0 with no problems only normal maintenance brakes etc. I had a Dodge diesel that's still in the family approaching 500k. I have always been a Ford man but These OHC chain problems have scared me away.

The only catastrophic failure was the torque converter at 224,00 miles (10/2019); oil changes at Ford Dealer almost monthly!recently switched to premium fuel when the catalyst code popped up- no reset just fuel change and light goes off
