You are right; this was perfect timing, at least for me. I have 24k on my R1T with 20" ATs. I think the LTX might be a good option for me as my driving is more like Skyler's. I went with the 20's mainly because of what you guys and others said about the availability of aftermarket tires plus I wanted to try out off-roading. Now I know that most of my driving will be on roads but I want to feel comfortable with Forest Service roads and light off-roading. It seems like the LTX with maybe some dedicated winter tires will be the best way to go. Thanks again for a really useful video!

Agree w/ Skyler 100%. Pirelli's drove me crazy w/ noise but I waited it out until 35K miles. Replaced them with MICHELIN DEFENDER LTX M/S and noticed an immediate difference. Super quiet. Have had them now for about 10K miles and they're still as quiet as when I got them.

😢glad you decided on the Defenders . They are awesome tires and are great in snow and are so quiet! I am driving on the Defenders LTS M/S with 25000 miles and they ride like they were brand new. I would be interested in seeing how Kyle’s tires do in snow. Interesting tread pattern

I agree with Skyler that the stock Pirelli's probably aren't the best rock crawler tires, nor are they best on road. But I've been VERY impressed with them on both gravel roads and snowy roads. Now this could be attributed to the R1T traction control being so good it's omniscient. But traction on ice/compacted snow is good, and on 2-4" of unplowed snow, it's amazing. They also do a great job of staying neutral on gravel roads. I have the same Toyo Open Country RT/Trails on my F-350, and they're not nearly as good in the snow. I normally love Michelin for quality and smoothness, but that tread pattern looks really iffy for those low traction scenarios. I'd love Skyler's take on how they work in snow and winter roads.

I'm still at 7/32nds on my stock tires at 26k. Gonna go with Continental Terraincontacts when it's time. Figured that'll be around 32 to 35k. Have them on my Ram. Great tire. Quiet. A little less aggressive but still capable off road. Better reviewed than the Michelin. At least on tire rack.

Skylar, you just saved me from thinking I was crazy. I thought that increased noise on my 20" AT was my imagination but definitely noticed it somewhere between 13-15k miles. Unfortunately, my full size spare didn't arrive until after I'd had 10k miles. So I'll probably go with Pirelli's again, do a 5 tire rotation and then see whats out there at that time. Maybe the Defender LTX like you did.

I hope you guys follow-up on this a year or so from now. I've got the 21" wheels with OEM/Pirellis and have been very satisfied so far --sorry to all the Pirelli haters. In the past 18 months, I've done about a dozen off-road trips that included rock-crawling, dry dirt, mud, and snow. I've never felt tire-limited. In fact, seasoned off-roaders frequently can't believe what the tires can do --it makes them a little uncomfortable sometimes☺. I get comments like, "Wow, I can't believe you just did that on road tires." I've also towed hundreds of miles with a 5k trailer & boat combination. With ~22,000+ miles on the tires, I have an average tread now of 4/32" on all of them. My miles/kWh efficiency has been 2.4 which has given great range numbers. If you're not off-roading EVERY weekend, there's no "need" for the ATs or anything more aggressive. Another common complaint about the Pirellis is cost. However, even something like the Michelin Defender LTX Platinum tires discussed in this video are similarly priced --seeing prices today around $425/tire online. So I'm interested to see, over time and mileage, what Skyler thinks of the Michelins. If your primary concern is aesthetics and looks, I agree the ATs look cooler.
@skylerwilliams

Traction is very good in our Rivians, so aggressive tread isn't needed as much unless you deal with mud.

Living in Florida I am torn. Everything is scattered and as such there is a lot of highway driving and very few non tesla chargers on the east coast (Melbourne area). I know on rocks (Utah, etc) the street tires w/the rivian traction systems work. How well would these AT tires do in sandy conditions like Florida. Really don't want to regret switching to 20's and finding out that range becomes a big issue for me. @@skylerwilliams

100% agree with going with the 20" wheels. Many benefits like forged wheels and many tire options. I downsized and went with 275/60R20 Pirelli all seasons since I mainly drive highways. Gets the overall diameter to be similar to the 21" and meets the load requirements

My Pirellis drove me nuts with noise and so I replaced them around 20,000 miles. Went with the Continental TerrainContact HTs and love them for the most part! Perfectly silent, smoother riding, better handling, and sensational wet traction. Only problem? They are HEAVY and this results in their efficiency being identical to the Pirelli ATs. Was really hoping for better range, but ah well! However, guess what? The Michelin Defender Platinums are even heavier :(

Same exact experience as you; at 15k the noise started driving me nuts. Up till then I was VERY impressed with the on and offroad behavior of the stock tires. 15k just isnt enough miles for a set of tires though. I was split between the platinums and BFG KO's or the Toy open country AT3's. I ended up going with cooper discoverer AT3 XLT's. They took a second attempt to get the balance right, then about 1000 miles or so to "break in" (I havent had that experience with other tires in the past). Prior to the swap I was averaging right at 2.0 miles per KWh, with the new tires I get about 1.8 miles per KWh. Thinking back now, i kinda wish I had gone with some LTX defenders for the range.

I was leaning towards BFG ko2 because I have had them on a lot of vehicles in the past and they lasted longer than any other AT that I've used but hearing about the range loss that Jimmy has and the efficiency that Skylar has been getting I'm tempted to go the Michelen route. My lifetime efficiency is 2.17mi/kWh and I would like to keep it near there or better. Keep us updated on the efficiency and ride of these tires. Hi Jimmy, Those Toyo’s look like a good fit for me except the road trip range loss you registered on your Tampa trip is a nonstarter. What was the outdoor temperature when you marked your efficiency on the Toyo’s on your trip to Tampa? I was doing some range testing with various rooftop loads last month and found any daytime temperatures below 60 took a hit that was at least as strong as that from certain equipment drag. Below 55 I lost about .3 to .4 mi/kwh. So, I’m wondering if ambient T was a contributing factor and it’s not all on the tires?

"P" or passenger rated tires aren't a "car tire", you should seriously consider the consequences of switching to an LT (light truck) tire - worse range, worse noise, worse handling, just to support loads you are most likely not carrying unless you trailer heavy loads consistently. The sidewall durability is not any better, actually having a more maliable (sp?) P rated tire is often better off road.
