Mel. Goodness gracious! I recently discovered you and have been binge watching all your videos (who needs Netflix?!) and I just got your book! I'm a HUGE fan of your work now and blown away by your knowledge, heart, and values! One thing caught my attention is that you're an incredibly successful entrepreneur who is also a mother and a WIFE! There aren't many women who stay married after they've seen so much success (which is heartbreaking). So inspired by you and everything you've accomplished!!!!!!! Love, Vicky
This absolutely helps me so so much. Thanks so much Mel. Also, one more tip that is helping me now is, scheduling worry times. Sounds silly, but this is backed by research as well. Look up in google guys if you are interested. I tell myself that I will worry construtively only during the scheduled times about 10 mins mid morning and evening ( only max of 10 to 15 mins), with a pen and a paper to find a solution if I can for what I am worrying about. Often we need a solution for a problem or a worry, instead of just not thinking about it. When my mind drifts away with a worry, I use the five second rule to get on with what I actually want to do and tell myself that I will constructively worry during the scheduled worry times. This helps me in breaking the habit of worrying.
I always used the count up of just,1-2-3 on my kids and they almost always actioned whatever I was asking of them. Apparently, there's a book, 1-2-3 Magic that I've not read but this comes from that idea. I imagine it's very similar to what Mel is using here. Strangely, It WORKS! I recently (accidentally) did it to my 18 year old & he started to do what I was asking before calling me out-LOL!
just wanted to say.I have completed my first workshop today. there are times I thought I couldn't do it..But used the 5 second rule this week to push through when when my business partner pulled out at the last minute. Result ? Smashed it out the park. customers happy . I'm very happy. Even had an amazing friend come in to fill the space and make it even more amazing ! OMG . glass of Prosecco in hand....life will never be the same again . Thanks Mel.xxxx
Just tried it today. Was dilly dallying around for the last few weeks trying to start an art project due on 16 April. Finally went on countdown and after 5,4,3,2,1, I just went ahead and started the work and forgot about the anxiety. This is my saviour. Thanks Mel.
Thank you so much Mrs. Robbins...for just being you... I learn so much about myself in the last couple months.... This really works... 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 blast off!!!!!.. God is Love
LOVE that I found your channel. Almost done with the 5 Second Rule book. Just found out about your journal as well. I teach Math to Adults who talk negative smack to themselves all the time. You help me inspire my students every day. You are a blessing!
I just found you and applied your rule at the same time with something I've been waiting days to do, I feel so much better and quite motivated to apply the rule on every aspect of my life. Thank you so much 💜
This is incredible! Because it helps me to wake up in the morning, and start my day, I shifted to: more possitive and more productive! I stopped doubt, and more do. Thanks Mel!
hey Mel that's really ....exactly.. write what u told "negativity taking your presence of mind" but we can use this rule 5..4..3..2...1 to melt the negativity and focus on the task what we were doing. I have experienced this situation and 5 sec rule is a life saver but to apply that rule u must have a will and desire Believe me Mel...
5 Second (Tool) Highlights: @1:38 As a bridge for effectively introducing new, positive behaviors. @2:45 As a space for asserting control in one's life, towards intentions & goals. @3:17 As the mechanics of how one arrives at having "just created a starting ritual" and taking even small actions - the soil and seeds of habits.
Thanks Mel! the 5 second rule has improved my ability to take and act on work and life decisions. And I think you might get to hear this a lot, that you look a lot like Cameron Diaz.
Thank you very much for your video, its just all I need in this moment of my life. I hope will work for me too. Thank you Mell I am very grateful for that. All the Best, with gratitude, Gabriela
Dear Mel, I love your spirit and philosophy. However, I am still not convinced if the 5 sec. rule works for someone suffering from anxiety/panicattack/depression and so on like you used to. I have a friend suffering from them, and am not quite sure if encoraging him with your 5 sec. rule is the right thing to do. Can you tell me your thoughts?
A Mel Robbins alarm clock. 15 minute morning motivation comes on, after which 5..4..3..2..1.. Blastoff! Rocket engine noises scream through your house waking everyone in your house.
I lv u Mel..u are one of the people who have made my life better by stopping procrastination and laziness..All the very best for everything u do..u are making lives better for sure :) - Aishwarya
There's a flaw in this 5 second rule: at ANY TIME after starting, you STILL have the option of GIVING UP, or stopping. How do you stop yourself from giving up? Like, if I approach a deadlift 5 seconds after using the rule, I can STILL give up lifting at any point, as there is STILL doubt in my mind. The rule does not eliminate completely something like doubt, which is what it seems to suggest it does.
Hi John, that's what I thought too! However, why not keep on using the rule till you start to develop the habit of keep on working on a task until is done. Sounds cumbersome but I think it will ease out with the passage of time. Just my 2 cents, I'm not a psychologist :) Cheers,
I agree, John. I have had the 5-second rule work for some things, but it has failed miserably when it comes to getting myself to get up as soon as I wake up and not fall back to sleep or lie there thinking. It's so warm and cozy under the blankets, and I just love lying there. Besides, if I get up, I have to deal with my hyperactive, demanding pets who will get up if I do LOL. (I love my pets, but man, they're a lot to take first thing in the morning.)
I really appreciate your awesome suggestions they have changed my thought pattern. I am also grateful because I was in a bad place in my mental space and the 5 second rule has helped me to refocus. Now I trying to figure what I truly want in life I'm at a crossroad. Trying to dream again as an adult with children and a disable husband is difficult but not impossible. Thanks again Mel❤️❤️❤️❤️💝💝💝💝
But how do you know the worry you have is out of your control? Does it necessarily have to be ANY negative thought? What if it's a worry that is in your control, but it's negative?
Mel, this tool -- and your clear description of its application - are very helpful. Also value the encouragement you give re trusting our instincts. Thank you!
started counting the moment u said it cuz the stuff u said befor was right on how i feel and i started to sweat 20 times aday ? feels like nothing ive done it 10 times now in 10 min
You are amazing.. one day really like to meet you. But after I will become successful in my business. And this is my first comment on RU-vid.. Thank you see you soon. God bless you always..
I just finished watching a video that says thinking positively and about what you want instead of what you're afraid will happen will attract good things. Now this lady says that thinking positively and ignoring your problems will make things worse?! That's it! I'm going to bed.
Kay2be2mr I don't think she means don't think positively...on the contrary, she means do not let yourself doubt or hesitate..don't let those thoughts even exist...which is actually thinking positively...the rule is used when you catch yourself doubting or thinking negatively to bring you to the present and do what you have to do instead of hesitate and paralize yourself.
Ok just like food, switch from that fat chips to baked potato. The 5 seconds gives you that alternative moment to either respond to a poor behaviorism from a coworker or room mate. Which you Know! There she goes again on the chaos rant looking to invite someone to have a disagreement. B/c she seems to feel empowered testing others. Believe or not we do this to ourselves by doubting or tossing the fear monster, worry wolly monster in place of doing. Next comes that sense of generalized anxiety, then blow out overwhelm self. Exchanging that worry to a positive. Five, 4, 3, 2, 1, write down and give it a priority rating. If I am self doubting myself then it is time to count & write it down & score it as level of how high is the sense. Often, 54321 in the mirror self talk "Oh no, You neg buster I have what it takes to get this done." Writing all this, which is my way of thinking out loud, now I need to visualize this or some say "mapping it". #fivesecondrule, reminds of that pause we should take before responding any issue. I believe it is known as a proverb. But I get back to that. Question is this a form of re-wiring our minds of how to do & not procrastinate? Which I have also have read aka neuroplasticity. When I get worried I long passed anxiety I already have a dozen or more woes then comes the sweating, red face (flush) even to point my face & skin burns. Usually by dinner time, I am about loose my patience & it has nothing to do about anyone. I am ready to hide in my cave take my worries & tell each one. I have gotten this far. Stop! But it is not working. So as introvert who lets all stinking thinking neg nag talk hold me prisoner until I have time to self. How can I apply this #fivesecondrule?
Mell don't u regret waisting 25 years of ur life over anxiety ? I do I have 25 years of my life over OCD ....I want those young years of my Life back ... which will never come
