"Move the body first!" & "not only feet" has been my solo jazz giveaways for many of my dance students and feedback.
Jazz dance styles are considered to be footwork based. Sure, they are of course. Though jazz dancing is rooted in African dances and it has depth and richness when it comes to upper body movement as well. A very different understanding of what upper body movement is. A lot of isolations, asymmetry, angularity, collapse and contractions in the chest and hip area.
It is a very common thing to focus only on feet and literally where and on what bit the feet go and I in a way ignore even the essential movement of the body. What is essential movement? For instance, to transfer weight we need to move the body first!
In life when we want to make a step, we first have an intention in our center, in the chest. Think of babies, who are learning how to walk. It looks like their feet always try to catch up with their body, not visa versa :)
Use the body weight, use the weight in your hips and chest. Engaging with it will really help you explore and master different qualities of steps and rhythms.
Put the primary attention into how and when you are moving your body and transferring weight engaging the center of the body. Most of the time if we struggle with the rhythm or transition it is because we don’t know how to use the body weight in the right way.
