Completely agree Daniel Cortez. Guitars are tools. They are beautiful tools, but they are tools. Innovation in guitars must be about sound and playability. It looks to me as though all of the bits that make this guitar expensive are at the detriment of playability. Does it sound any better than a good Flying V? Probably not.

This represents everything I dislike about Gibson, "exclusive", "master artisan collection", "$60,000", it's like they're focusing on making NFTs and investments for elitists with too much money rather than tools to be played. Just compare it to what fender has been releasing and actually trying to innovate with the meteora, player series etc, focusing on making tools accessible to everyone for making music rather than instruments made to look like they have soul but have never been near a stage and probably never will because of how much they are charging for them. Gibson started out making amazing mandolins and guitars, instruments made to sound good and be played rather than to hang on a wall in some posh hedge fund manager's City apartment they only live in for 2 weeks of the year. Any instrument is just a few pieces of wood and some metal and plastic, it's the music someone makes with them that makes them special, not the way the metal has been artificially rusted.

If you had a balanced and rational opinion you’d have all of the same issues with Fender that you have with Gibson. Go look up the Game of Thrones Fender guitar series from a couple of years ago if you want a really good example of the crazy expensive pieces that they make 🤷🏼‍♂️ Oh, and while you’re at it, take a look at the MSRP of the cheapest American made Fenders vs the MSRP of the cheapest American made Gibsons - you may be surprised 🤷🏼‍♂️

I agree. I got a new les Paul standard two months ago. It’s beautiful and plays well after I had a real luthier fix the frets and the nut. Its sounds amazing too. "The collector guitar world... if you're not finely in tune with it, these numbers sound like madness." Ok yes it's an 'art piece', but it's still madness. Not sure who's noticed, but interest rates are going up. Middle income collectors will be selling anything they can to pay for that variable rate mortgage they thought would never increase, under pressure from 'partners' who are already skeptical about their collections. If only Gibson made Edible Guitars then we could all collect, and still feed the kids.

It's been a very, very long time since Da Golden Age, when the instruments these guitars recall were sold to dive-bar players who used them as work tools to scratch out a living. Doubt that any of the relic reissues like these will ever see a stage, unless they fall into the hands of a Joe Perry or an Eric Clapton, or a Slash, and it's a certainty none will EVER get near the dives the originals were born to work. Is it a sign that they've finally run out of ideas within the company on how to rehash yet another 60 year old model for yet another limited collectors edition, that they've now had to look outside the company for someone to rehash it for them? Is that the plan for growing the business? Hoover the wallets of a small number of existing collectors with endless regurgitations? Is that enough to stay afloat and remain relevant to the next generations?

Hi Austin. I tried to send this note to you last week from the Portuguese hospital ward where I have been residing for the last year in a wheelchair. I was catching up on missed Trogly shows when I heard and read something odd. You were commenting on the recent Gibson European Mod / Demo shop site. One very nice guitar was listed as being located in Amerfoot, Holland and you suggested that one had to live in one of these places in order to buy from the site.Errr..No.The seller was clearly showing that his items are being shipped from a country in the European Union. Now E.U. countries are allowed to buy and sell goods to each other with NO taxes or import duties being charged! I live in Portugal, another E.U, country so I can and do frequently purchase internet items from Holland,Germany,France etc, duty free. Keep up the show Austin. For people like me it is a lifesaver.

I've had a love-hate relationship with Flying Vs for years. My first electric guitar was a Hondo V copy. I've had a couple of Gibson Vs as well as an Ibanez V from the 70's (sold decades ago). So it's hard for me to say if I'd want one of these without playing it first. How a guitar plays and sounds means more to me than any collectability aspect. I'm also one who isn't shy about modifying guitars if they are close to what I like, but could use some tweaks. Scala is also known for chambering most of his Les Paul and Tele style guitars. Pete Thorn has one and has talked about it a number of times. Pete also has a Gil Yaron "Burst" that is close to a counterfeit Les Paul. They are still incredibly expensive, but less than many of the Gibson Custom Shop models. Yaron now only builds Les Paul-"style" guitars that aren't quite the same shape. Years ago Pete mused about how he though Gibson should hire Yaron to build limited edition Les Pauls similar to his copy.

That's just today's guitar market having learned from the vintage guitar (and premium car) craze how to turn cheap wood into treasures: What started out as innovative instrument makers is now owned by private equity firms with a focus in generating as much money as possible with products they have no actual relation with. Their focus isn't so much musicians but investors and collectors (which is almost the sole purpose of the F+G "custom shops"), they have created a market for that and developed it to a degree that the finite supply of collectible vintage guitars is no longer hindering their dreams of turning random products into an alternative currency gaining value, more stable than gold. The instruments they make for the average chump for premium chump money at highly cost-effective mediocre chump quality are just there to make these bold money-generating dreams work without further investments.

Money aside, I think they're really cool. Really great relic-ing. I would take the hybrid I guess. Did they offer that with a metal pickguard? I don't even remember lol, so confusing with all the models and collections. The seraph is really cool as art but I wouldn't want it. But a 1 pickup V looks really cool and must sound absolutely monstrous. The neck tenon would extend further into the body hopefully uninterrupted by a neck pickup route. The open sound of a 1 PU guitar, with a korina body on top of that? Hooooo dawgy.

I like the one with the Indian motorcycle brand logo on the pick guard, at least I think it’s their logo. I know some of the names of the Fender Custom shop master builders. The only one I know from Gibson is Murphy. I have a team build Fender Custom shop Strat and Ron Thorn signed my COA. I am sure he signed a lot of them but I have always thought it was cool that he signed mine. He seems to be really chill and obviously very talented.

I’m pretty sure each Master Builder signs the COA of their own builds, but the Head of the Custom Shop (which is currently Ron Thorn) signs the COAs of all the Team Built instruments.

I’m pretty sure Richard Fortus has or had several of Leo Scala guitars. I think at least one of them ended up being sold by Chicago Music exchange. But, the one thing you didn’t note at the beginning of the video is how the tops of his personal build guitars are on stilts & not completely “connected” to the back so there’s a space there. I distinctly recall seeing a guitar with a lot of metal on it with the top raised above the back in an episode of Rig Rundown with Fortus on Premier Guitar’s channel. To answer your question do I like these? Yeah, I think they’re really cool. Would I buy one? No, no I wouldn’t put that kind of money into them I would rather put that kind of money into an authentic vintage but I would certainly be proud to own one if someone gifted it to me. I just wouldn’t buy it myself because as I said if I had that kind of disposable income I would just buy real vintage. Thank you for doing this video though, I saw it pop up on their site, saw it had no price tag & just didn’t do any further digging into it.

Did you notice on the side of the top edge there is a space? That is actually somewhat chambered. Kinda semi-hollow body. Sort of. Not on the V models. The other ones. There's a vid of Phil X demoing if you want to call it that,a Scala underdog guitar and he mentions it.And yes, I love the Seraph. Id grab that in a sec.

While the argument rages below, player vs. collector, I want to remind you that the value of money varies greatly. If you're struggling to get by with $12 in the bank, $60,000 is a huge sum. If you've got a hundred million in the bank, $60,000 is chump change.

I used to love Gibson's. I have a 57 Les Paul Special, 69 SG Standard and a 2008 Les Paul Standard. The thing is I mostly play my 1999 Ibanez SCR 220 - List was $649. Think I paid $389 from Musician Friend. I appreciate ART, BUT ...... These are not made for me. For Sale : 1 57 Les Paul Special $150K - 1 69 SG $80K - Buy both and get the 2008 as a Bonus.

Do I like them? I’m generally not a fan of Vs or relicing. So, they aren’t for me, even if they were in my price range. But the 777 & Seraph fall into that category of guitars that I like the look of even if it doesn’t have a place in my stable.

I like the $60k guitar because of its color and style. Also it had some very interesting aging on it. It looked like it was in your grandpa's basement and you pulled it out after 50 years. Idk if anyone noticed but it looked like "mold" on the back of the guitar.

This artisan thing is truly beauty. People are saying these aren't worth it. Real Jewels? I think maybe that they think Epiphones are as good as Gibsons. I wouldn't know right to the point of it, but Epiphones are not the jewel themselves. Sure they feel good, but without the plek and the burstbucker, what? It's any other guitar. I wouldn't have minded a custom Fender. But yea, those are some sic looking Flying Vs.

I really like the white and black pickguard models, especially the 777s because I always really liked that weird bolted on look. I’m sure they’re far less playable unless you’re standing, but if you’re gonna own multiple guitars then why not? Not a big fan of his skull/metal work though, just really not my style.

I really like the idea, people have to understand these are not guitars meant to be played, these are pieces of art, which is WAY more expensive for shit that doesn't have soul or work put in. Gibson should make they designs more accessible, but have at least some QC regarding the brands that manage to get the rights to use their names and shapes, so that we get "authentic" instruments at a lower cost, imagine a bunch of Epiphones where the only say Gibson has is either they judge tye guitars worthy or not. That would be nice and make people happier, instead of licensing to boutique builders and luthiers, Which, do not get me wrong, it is very cool to see it and I hope we see more stuff like this.

Ron Thorn's pre Fender guitars are some of the most beautiful guitars out there IMHO. Maybe someday I'll order a Master Built Fender from him. I like the Flying Vs, but those prices ... WTHeck. But if Gibson can sell them for that, the market has spoken ... LOL I wish I was the target for them .. at least from a financial stand point.

Guitar companies selling you relec'd guitars is crazy! More crazy is those who like and buy them. I have a nice relec'd POS car that has 400K miles on it with the seats ripped to shreds with many character dings and dents. It also smells like an ashtray mixed with beer and farts, has a nice lawn mower engine in it that was replaced back in the day and is vintage too with those flinstones feet transmissions......Will you relic lovers give me 70K for it?
