What's WRONG with Alex Ovechkin?!

Ovechkin's slow start to the season is starting to impact how realistic it is that he catches Wayne Gretzky's all time goal scoring record of 894. Ovi only has 5 goals so far this season and is struggling by all accounts.
But is his play indicative of the future or is this just an unlucky stretch? I walk through the underlying metrics to see what's really going on!

I think it has to do with the passing of his father earlier this year, when he left the team to attend his funeral and came back, he was not the same.Grief strikes everyone differently and IMO Ovie is still dealing with some of that.

Growing up in Alberta, while Gretzky was in his prime, was memorable. The rivalry between Calgary and Edmonton was some of the best hockey I've ever witnessed. Ovechkin is also a legend. He adapted like no other Russian to the Canadian game. Tough and determined. I always felt records are eventually broken, in some lifetime, even when some seem unimaginable. Lemieux, I believed, was one player to do so if his health didn't fail. He could score at will. Just look at his games played to goals ratio. An incredible.75 goals/game. Never happened. And Bossy .76 goals /game? Comparing is difficult, because circumstances never play the same in players for different reasons. Nonethelless, they are two of the greatest I've ever seen, bar none!!!

Look up Backstrom's stats over his career vs in the last three seasons, then look at Ovie. Ovechkin essentially hasn't had Backstrom with him for the previous two seasons on top of this one, and yet his goal-scoring was more-or-less unaffected. I love a solid player like Backstrom, but it just doesn't seem to be the case that he's integral to Ovechkin's scoring rates.

You for sure are someone who hasn't watched Ovi over the years aside from the games he played vs your team. The guy has scored so many snapshop rush goals, snapshots off a faceoff win, drives to the net and obviously his one timers. He has 675 assists and is an underrated passer, he averaged 50 assists/year while putting up the amount of goals his did his first 5 years in the league. He is the ultimate team player and used his physicality, speed and ability to be in position to reach the numbers he has and pretty much every season was the guy who would drag the team kicking and screaming to win, he would lead. You're looking at the last 5 years and using that as his whole career. Watch some of his compilations from his earlier years and it becomes much more obvious how he isn't "A one trick pony". Older generations don't want to see a record of the great one broken, but lets be honest, the overall skill level of guys on the ice during those eras were not the same, the goalies skill levels and size and pads were smaller, it would be insane for someone to break most of the points.

As of posting this comment Ovechkin is only 66 Goals behind Gretzky's record & still is signed for 2 seasons past this current one In the next 2.5 seasons to catch Gretzky he needs to score 26.4 goals per season for instance. Lets say Ovechkin is right behind Gretzky's goal record after 2.5 years, I'd assume somebody in the league would offer him a 1yr extension for cheap even if his play continue to not be anywhere near what it once was. If so : In the next 3.5 seasons to catch Gretzky's goal record he'd need 18.8 goals per season The fact Ovechkin only needs to score at a 19 goal pace if he plays through the rest of his contract + signs for 1yr somewhere afterwards is why I still believe that IF Ovechkin can stay healthy & if Ovechkin wants it enough he can still beat Gretzky. You don't want to talk about assists because Gretzky makes everyone else look bad but in a comparison with Ovi he makes Ovi look pathetic. Gretzky could have stopped counting assists after 6 seasons and would still be ahead of Ovi. Ovi doesn't play defense and is a major liability to his team in that regard. If you take away all of Wayne Gretzky's goals -- even though he has scored more than anyone in history -- on just his assists alone he is still the all time points leader in the history of the NHL. If you take away all of Alex Ovechkin's goals -- he is at best a 4th line journey-man who yo-yo's up and down from the AHL. Gretzky is still, to this day, the best player. If he played in today's league, he would still be the greatest. What is interesting about Gretzky is the fact that he wasn't the fastest or best skater, he didn't have the hardest shot, he didn't hard or hit at all, and he wasn't the best stickhandler/dangler. He was arguably not the best in any single skills category, but his complete game was and to this day is unmatched. He was hardly ever injured because he always had his head up and was difficult to hit, players that tried described him as being frustrating because they would roll off him against the boards. His ability to anticipate where the puck would be going was better than anybody's, he was able to look ahead and anticipate like a chess player. He knew where other players would be which allowed him to make great passes. He was just always in the right spot. Best hockey player to ever live.

There are a couple ex-hockey players who state Ovi needs 30 this year to keep pace and pass the Great One.... he's not going to do it. His supporting cast isn't really present. He doesn't look unlucky hitting crossbars or missing open nets. He looks slower and older. Also, he has been lucky to never really be injured. As a guy gets older, this is more likely to happen where he misses time to injury. My feeling is that he hits 12 to 18 goals, realizes he is not going to catch 99, and gracefully retires as one of the greatest goal scorers and a cup champ.

In my book he already is the greatest goal scorer because Ovechkin had to go through a lot of missed games he had nothing to do with due to two lockouts and the pandemic. He probably was denied over 100 games and 50+ goals because of this. The first lockout in 05, which would've been his rookie season, kept the NHL shut down for an entire season, the second about half of it ( and then he was in his prime ), and he also was denied a few more games due to the pandemic later on. If not for all those missed games he'd be ahead of Gretzky's record right now.

Tragic if Gretzky’s record gets broken. He will never be replaced by OV no matter what happens. Look at what Gretzky has done for hockey and the NHL, what has Ovi done? Gretzky went to the United States and made a big difference in hockey down there and all of North America.

ovi did too he single handedly brought the capitals back into relevancy i mean he said it himself he and crosby saved the nhl after the nhl was in a tricky spot with the 04-05 lockout. Stop being a hater and actually appreciate greatness cause it doesn't go on forever. Gretzky himself even said this. Be more classy like Gretzky not some selfish internet troll

How funny would it be if Ovi barely misses Gretzky's record, but he keeps trying at like 60 years old, and the caps would still let him try it out of pity.

This differnet era OV still a champ no one going to break that record

One trick pony will end with one cup. And he's not 1/10th the player Gretzky was no matter how many goals he scores.

I never entertained the idea what Ovi would catch Gretzky... and I'm a big Caps & Ovi fan. Are people not familiar with how players fall off when they reach about Ovi's age?

There’s only one Great One and we all know who that is !! The finesse style game Gretzky played made every player he played with better. Gretzky made average players like Luc Robitaille super scorers. Luc averaged 100 points per season for 6 years thanks to Wayne getting traded to LA.

he's still going to beat it, it'll just take longer than expected. Few athletes would end their career voluntarily after being so close to breaking one of the greatest individual sports records of all time. He is going for it, don't worry.

No he won't. He looks done. If it takes him more games than it took Gretzky that will be lame.

i see you crying like a wittle girl cause i bet if he was on your team you wouldn't be saying this. This is cancel culture at its finest cause the truth is he is absolutely great. This is a type of player who we'll prolly never see again once it is over and seeing greatness get taken for granted is just delusional. He will eventually whether you like it or not so you keep crying if you want to little man and keep doing so after he DOES break it eventually @@davidfletcher4622
