Mine are the flat regular Black Converse ! Very comfortable on the erg, flat sole, no cushion and can feel the push pretty well ! Love those ! 😉

Oh I figured out what the black shoes are. They’re martial arts shoes. The most similar I could find were the Adidas Adi-Kick 2

Just found this video. Watched it. Went out and bought some better rowing shoes (instead of using my old gym trainers) - honestly feel much better connection to rower - cheers cam 👍

Great topic that gets overlooked. Have used football trainers in the past as they have a harder sole and are relatively flat too.

I like barefoot or Vans actually. Vans are super flat and minimal but dont vent well, so I only really wear them when its cold (erg is outside)

Pair of cheap canvas plimsolls from Primark for me, been using them since I've started erging and they're still going strong. The flat thin sole is key and fabric allows my feet to breathe. I've used a pair of throwing (discus/shot) shoes to good effect as well. I've tried erging in my adidas lifting shoes but it feels my feet are choking as the upper materials are less breathable and tight and the heel is quite high like your white's.

I use Merrill bare foot series shoes. No swishy foam under foot which you do not need in the gym plus this style allows you to splay your toes and provides good feedback about what your feet are encountering. Great for stick shifting cars, too…

bit of a late comment, but I do high school rowing and have always rowed using the trainers. I ALWAYS feel that problem off of the catch, where your shoes are almost off of the footplate when you push to the finish. I think it's just because we always run before practice or do HIIT workouts on land before we get on the rowing machine. Whenever I'm using it at home, im going to start using vans. i always wondered what the issue i felt was, thank you for making this video

Hey Cam, great video on the shoes!! I’ve noticed you haven’t been using the seat pad that you were using a while back. Just curious if you decided to make the change and your take on using a seat pad. I myself have long legs and I use one to get the knees out of the armpits and to feel like I’m sitting up more. Though it might be a good topic for discussion in a later video. Keep up the great videos!! 👍
@CameronBuchan

Yeah haven't used the seat pad since I think last year. It gives me a flatter drive and have been working on my flexibility and strength to be able to work without it!

Not a comment on shoes, but related: how do you decide what notch to use on the footplate? I imagined the higher up the footplate, the more the leg drive is aligned with the direction of travel?

Insta-canceled lol Great points. I've seen some teams prefer barefoot so you can feel, but also so mud or anything doesn't get in the shoe and ruin your session. I'm curious your take on this. Thanks for all you do Cameron.
@CameronBuchan

I have never heard that for a reason of going barefeet but everyone has there reasons! I've known and have had plenty of sessions interrupted by barefeet rowing with blisters and slipping feet etc

Love this video, Cameron. I almost always row barefoot. I've built up calluses to where it's not (too) uncomfortable. Question; when you do a 2k test, do you go barefoot or deadlift shoes?

£7 'Hot Tuna' aqua-shoes from Sports Direct for me. Similar to the logic of using the deadlift shoes - they are more protective than bare feet but also minimalist and give connection to the machine. Tried rowing in trainers, but it just felt uncomfortable (for me).

I know this is a thing in rowing that has differing opinions but I am surprised how much his heels lift off the foot pads. I have watched other guys like the Training Tall guy that says your heels should stay against the foot pads.
@CameronBuchan
@CameronBuchan Год назад
Some people, myself included, don't have the flexibility to keep heels down. Literally some people would barely get to a half stroke before they would have to lift the heels. Every body is different and heels up does not make a big difference if you do other parts of the stroke correctly. I wouldn't say to anyone to forcefully keep their heels down.
@MsNd4Spd
@MsNd4Spd Год назад
@@CameronBuchan I observed that too. My coach saw my feet doing the same, and told me to not go forward so far that my knees bend further more. I noticed instant split improvement as I reduced time going all the way forward while keeping my feet flat all the time. But I also practice asian squats for ankle flexibility.. I have well-defined lower legs than thighs, so I think I am constantly adjusting my push as I can't rely on sustaining push strength throughout the session. Perhaps low-heeled shoes will train my thighs to get stronger.

Do you think that taking the soles out of some sneakers effectively makes them close to deadlift shoes?
@CameronBuchan

Depending on the sneakers potentially but the soles of the shoes are generally can be the part that "needs" changing
