"if you're not planning on keeping one of these things for life, then you're looking at the wrong car." That is one of the best pieces of buying advice that I've ever heard.

AMEN! My partner encourages and nurtures my Mercedes habit. She told me "face it Chris, you're a Mercedes Man." The only Mercedes I bought without asking for her approval (1 in 6) is a really straight 1981 300TD 7 seater that she bought from me. It's shaping up to be her forever car. Big Bertha Benz will be bright orange and have a 4 speed manual behind the glorious OM617. My forever car is a green 1983 euro 4 speed 240D named the unsinkable Molly Green, also known as Molly The Goodest Car. I cannot imagine living without a W123. I thought I was a car guy my whole life. Nope. I'm a Mercedes guy. That percussive, stinky, formerly mistreated old beast is the best car I've ever had.

I love my wagon. 1985 300TDT Euro version. I'm working on restoring it for myself, by myself. It will never be for sale until I'm dead and even then I believe one of my daughters will take it over. I'm changing things to suit my tastes a little and shudder, changing the color, but I want it to be the way I want it. I have touched and redone ever single system , part, metal work etc in the car and could tell you any part of it. I love the face that I can just get into it and work on it. No fancy computers, no mystery black boxes. Simply the best car I have ever owned.

I just bought an 87 300d for 4500.. no rust at all, under just under 200k, and mostly ready to daily. It's always going to be a gamble when you buy something used, but always trust your gut. If your gut says no, walk. Always walk. Sometimes you just know its a bad idea without knowing why.

I've been waiting for this video for the longest, Pierre, so this post will be long and I'll probably come back and edit it a couple of times. The first Mercedes-Benz I ever drove was a new '83 300TD, in the infamous manila envelope/German taxi beige. At the time my mom drove Cadillacs; I was home from college and she asked me to take her car to the dealer for service. The dealer was a Cadillac/M-B dealership and they let me take the TD out for a test drive while I waited on mom's Cadillac. The difference was night and day and convinced me that Mercedes-Benz, not Cadillac, had the right idea of what made a luxury car worth its purchase price. I currently daily drive a 2016 E350 wagon that I bought new as a leftover at the end of 2016. 55K miles as of today and It's been mechanically perfect save for a blower motor regulator replaced under warranty. My hobby car is a longhood Porsche 911T that I've owned for about a dozen years; a decent driver but unlikely ever to be restored to better than that. I'm now less than a decade out from retirement age and, who knows, maybe I live a decade after that? In any event I find myself thinking either try to make the '16 last the rest of my life (okay, you can stop laughing) or find a decent S123 or S124 wagon to make my rest-of-life car. Much more analog cars than the '16 and easier for me to maintain and repair, on a par with the old 911. I'll be back to edit and comment. You keep being you, Pierre, and I'll keep being a Patreon supporter.

See I was born during the height of automotive perfection (1990) and all of my favorite cars are only available to me second hand and typically in rough shape in my range of wallet. Fortunately I'm a strong reader and handy with a wrench. I bought a 95 E300D and plan to keep it until I can't drive anymore. Now if only I could find a good job 😅. I hope you find exactly what you're looking for. If you're in SoCal I'll lend you a hand with your project 👍 I know how much a second set of hands can help.

I have been driving my '83 300TD-T for 8 years and it just turned 300k miles. It is awesome and runs just like new. Everything works, Climate Control, Cruise Control, Central Locks, everything. It is Manila Beige and so NFS (Not For Sale) but I get offers all of the time. I was offered $10,000 last month by a person who left his business card on my door with that number on it. I called the guy to thank him for the offer and explained that it is NFS.

The cars that are in original survivor condition are the best. Original paint, upholstery, low(ish) miles, etc. Even if it needs some work (they all do), it’ll be a more worthwhile vehicle because once you sort through the maintenance list you will eventually reach a point where you can drive the car regularly and enjoy it instead of having to wrench on a worn out junker all the time.

I'm a "car guy" but I own a 96 Ford 7.3 Powerstroke diesel, and a 95 E300D. Both of them I plan to keep forever. I like them more than most any modern production vehicle. I can't wait to have the E300D fully sorted, but my wallet and lack of time slow me down (owned it for 2 months at this point). Of course I'm probably not the standard car guy you are talking about, but the statement of being a car guy is a pretty large blanket statement. I will learn the ins and outs of this car and know how to do nearly everything myself as I fix everything that requires attention. I'm replacing the radiator now (end tank is leaking pressure but not fluid), then cleaning out the fuel system and checking injectors and timing (260k miles), then rebuilding the front end, then on to the rear end. So I doubt I'm the type of car guy you're talking about, but I do think cars are neat, and I do learn about other cars too, just not as much.

I'm more than happy to own an '85 Euro 300TDT petrol bluegreen with palomino MBTex. I've had over 25 cars in my life, I even have 2 W201 now, a 2.3, and a 2.3-16. Could sell those one day, but not the wagon... the best car I've had by far.

A bit of advice, do not watch "Primal Fear." Richard Gere drives a 300 CD and I can never remember what the movie is about. In fact, I had to go look it up to write this note. It is about an altar boy who murders a priest. Ask me about "Primal Fear" on another month or so and I'll tell you it is about a MB 300 CD driven by Richard Gere. :)

Hello Pierre, I was wondering what Mercedes Benz would you recommend for someone interested in restoration? I'm aware some models can be very complex and expensive to restore so I'm looking for something with a little less hassle and good parts availability. Also a car that is relatively affordable at under $20k USD. If you read this thank you for your time and I love the channel

Love your videos. I AM a "Mercedes Guy." :-) Love the 123 and have had three including a TD. Owning one became less practical for me with a house in the mountains, but I do like the mildly more modern engineering and features of the 124 wagons, both the TD and TE and I miss the feeling of driving an older Benz. About the 123, you said "If you're looking for a 123 series model, good move. Just don't pay too much." Would you say the same about say, a '91 TE?
@kevdupuis

Sorry Pierre but I consider myself a car guy, since I was old enough to drive I've bought, fixed up, rodded, restored and have driven many makes and models of vehicles with a soft spot for wagons (family always had one one the farm growing up) but never had a Mercedes. When my 85 3oo TD came up for sale I looked at it to replace a more modern Dodge Magnum as my main vacation/traveling car and as a learning experience, I have more trust in a vehicle that I can get dirty on than one I have to take to a dealer just to check the trans fluid level. In the 5 years I have owned it I have sorted the climate control, cruise, suspension and various other maintenance items that were neglected under previous ownership all the while driving it from spring to fall with a 14,000 km road trip thrown in for fun 3 years ago in fact I'm readying it for a trip to Cape Breton and a cruise on the Cabot trail in the very near future. It's far from a perfect car but it is a great 90% original car " metal dings included" that I'm not afraid to take on long hard drives or get wet. If I wasn't a car guy I'd be driving something that I would throw away every five - ten years and not either of my two 80's om617 equipped Benz's.

Good commentary. I like the TD, but do not think it would be a fit for us. But I still admire the car. I’m fortunate that my car found me, rather than my going out to find the car. At some point we may look for another, and that might be a Cabriolet or a Coupé…but that’s to be determined. Again, the hope there would be to find one that has been a family jewel that had been loved and cared for that we might be entrusted to do the same.

My boyfriend bought a '91 W124 300TE wagon for $1100 about a month ago. @churnjitmaumi1878
@churnjitmaumi1878 3 года назад
If you own a pre 1993 mercedes, you should think of yourself as custodian of the car, not the registered keeper/owner. 1993 is the cut off point in the UK for proper mercedes as it was the year the w202 relpaced the w201, and the w124 facelifted version was introduced with different engines and cheap steel being used for body parts. They simply dont hold up as well as the prefacelift w124. I agree with comment that saloons should not be discounted, theyre just as good, why the obession with wagons/estate.

Pierre - (or others) I'm a fan of the 300TD wagon. I have a w210 wagon but its a gas V-6, not diesel. Never seen a TD w210 wagon in fact. Were none EVER imported to USA markets ? Seems odd cause earlier series wagons seem to be split evenly Diesel / Gas. Thanks for any insight - David
@nichopaulu8395
@nichopaulu8395 3 года назад
As far as I know, no S210 was ever imported to the U.S. when new with a Diesel engine. In fact, no facelift 124 wagons (‘93-‘96) were available in the States with a diesel, it was just earlier S124s that could be had as a 300TE or 300TD w/ the OM603 six-cylinder, although the S124 300TD was only available for one model year, 1987. S123 models sold in the U.S. were only 300TDs, the the OM617 five-cylinder, either non-turbo 1978-1980 or turbo 1980-1985.

If the diesel pump is modified to increase fuel flow will this safely increase hp. The purpose only for passing and entering highway with more safety, so the car would be used normally. I don't have a w123 or w126 but some day I would love to own one.

I love these cars (300TD), Find your own local MB mechanic (one who like Pierre knows these cars) _before_ you find the car and have them inspect the car (at your cost) before you close the deal. Even a great deal will likely have some needed repairs - don't let that scare you but know as much as you can up front.

So this might be a really stupid question, but, I personally have never seen a 300d or td with a manual transmission and I really don't enjoy driving automatics all that much (mainly for fuel economy reasons) but I know 240ds have manuals. I cannot believe that you are thinking it is possible to buy a 1985 or older 300 TD that does not need to be sorted out. They ALL need to be sorted out at this age. You are just kidding yourself if you think you can buy one of these cars and it will not need to $10,000 in parts in the next 10,000 miles. These cars are just OLD. They need all kinds of work. Nobody is selling 300 TD's with new engines, transmissions, and A/C compressors for $15k. Pierre, you are making a mistake thinking that some car that leaves your shop is "sorted" because it working when it left. It is sorted until the next thing goes wrong in 3000 miles. That is okay if you are prepared for it, but you leave the impression that all you need to do is fix the things that are wrong TODAY and live happily ever after. NOOOOOoooooo, there is plenty of blood, sweat, and tears until everything has been gone through. It is not how little can you get away with, but how much can you do to ensure a reliable car.
@gercoa9148
@gercoa9148 3 года назад
I originally bought mine about 8 years ago. for 1000 bucks. I replaced the front suspension, put in a new starter for about 1300 bucks and put 150,000 miles on doing a long commute daily drive for 5 years. I parked it for a couple years and then started my sorting to really bring it back. You can very the slow progress over on my little channel here. It currently sits with 350,000 mile on it. My point is, you can get one of these and daily it basically as cheaply as anything else out there. Are you going to get a show car for under 10k...nope. Are you going to spend 10-20K restoring it back to it's original glory...yup... if you really want to . Either way, just enjoy the car. It's doing what it was built to, that is to be a dependable car.
