I totally agree. You seem very dedicated to doing a great job. I am very lucky that i have a mercedes mechanic who owns his own shop for 30 years and even raced mercedes. But he is also the most honest mechanic, he only does repairs that are needed or even asks you do you want to spend the money to do this because this is how much it will cost. He lets you buy your own parts or he will only order them from mercedes. I know you dont like mercedes shops because you can see they cut corners and dont always do the best job. Mercedes dealers for me in my opinion are also rip off artists.

Thank You Pierre wonderful video . 64 years old here have not let another mechanic touch my 5 cars in 30 years . I m a car hobbies who blessed with the ability to repair my own vehicles. I do farm out transmission and or engine for machine shop work .Personally I don't think there are the many good mechanic in the world especially classic car mechanics. A lot of half ass people who know a little about a lot of things ,but no extensive knowledge . I had many people ask me to work on there cars and always say no ,why because it's a love for me to work on machinery especially classic benz's . The minute it turns into a business it takes the fun out of it for me . I own a excavating company for 25 yrs and became burned out by people and retired from working for myself because of the customers . I can tell you about money and materialism I work for the very...... rich as a private estate facilities manager now, ,once you go down that road you become a Gerbil on a treadmill that never stops ,always chasing the next newest and best material things . It's good to hear someone put there child and family before there work you'll never regret it .

Frequently people who do what they do because for the love of doing it, don't get along with others that may do it just for profit. In any profession....Your honesty, knowledge and experience is evident. Your subscribers get along with you. BTW, after seeing your videos, yours is the only channel I have ever subscribed to!

my personal repair shop experience is devastating. 98% of the shops are either dishonest, clueless, and often even both things. That's why I'm trying to learn to get stuff done myself.

You're better off. Shoot ,I became a master tech 25yrs ago because I wanted to know more and fix my stuff myself but use it to put food on the table. See if maybe a local college has any night courses and take some basics. I use the basic 101 theories every day at work. Then for relaxing,I wrench on my junk.

I once left my 1991 190E with the M102 engine at a specialist shop in order to figure out why the engine was running rough. After several weeks without even getting a diagnosis or a quote for the work I went to pick up the car again. It was sitting in a literal junkyard at the back of the building covered in all kinds of dirt and maybe crop dust/fertilizer, since the shop was right next to a farm. The guy just told me he simply hadn't got yet the time to look at it. I was pissed, but if it wasn't for that incident I wouldn't have found your channel through the KE-Jetronic videos.

You joined the business for the same reasons as i did. You charge exactly as I do, you also don't like dealing with repair shops for the same reasons as do i! A coincidence? No. We both love mercedes, and I don't like letting people down. Unfortunately, life dictates we cover our overheads. ❤️

God bless you Pierre. There are too many valid points here to address, as they all hit home quite hard. You know what is right & what must be done. Keep doing what is right & don't concern yourself with the rest, including people's incorrect/invalid perceptions of one who doesn't cut corners or blow smoke.

Yes, if there's ONE thing you really do not want to deal with (especially when it comes to MB's) it is the CHEAP customer.

Generalizations suck for all. I lived in Southern CA where most people pay too much for everything from food to repairs. They aren't price conscious, and as a result, it becomes a world where prices are too high. Cost of living aside, somethings were out od touch with reality. For car repairs, I look at what they charge labor (and at times, parts) for. Don't charge me 3 hours for a 1 hour job. I barely found a decent shop my last year there.
@Johnathan_Waters
@Johnathan_Waters 2 года назад
@@Mr-ed5ep Clearly you are not a mechanic lol. Dealing with the public is hands down the hardest/worst part of the job. The vast majority of people are very nice, and I get along very well with them, but once in a while, you get the "cheap" customer (among many other types) this one stands out because they usually end up soaking up a bunch of your time, with little to no gain.

hi pierre, yes, i know a lot of shops view the mercedes badging a sign, as if it were made of gold... similarly, i've experienced a LOT of dentists that seem to obsess over excessive, needless, 'preventitive care'...i really hate this kind of individual. my dad, in his early 80's for some reason was convinced by his dentist that he needed 25k lower implants which took a real toll on him physically/mentally & financially. anyway, i digress, your trade is one built on relationships for sure. i am minimalist by nature and my E300 merc one of very few cherished material items. money seems to spoil so much of what is good in life. .

At the end of the day, every business exists to make money. Nothing wrong with that. Pierre does so by offering honest services at a fair price. Keeping a classic MB in top form isn’t a cheap endeavor. It’s a labor of love. The market will weed out those who are looking to make a quick buck.

Most shop are in it for the money, meaning loyalty and professionalism be damned. It is the same for most trades. Most successful shops are smooth talkers.

Something I have learnt with multiple classic cars is to always seek out of the reputable specialists. As he says in the video, don't believe a garage who says they can 'fix anything' unless they have some credentials to back it up. One of the most important things is familiarity with a particular era/marque of car - people who work on a model every day will be so much more familiar with its issues and although may have a more expensive labour rate, will complete the job faster and get it right first time. I also respect garages that know their limitations and decline work they are unfamiliar with and may even recommend elsewhere. Perhaps in the US, but in the UK there are not many garages 'making millions' a year with the poor approach to business described. Typically they are not doing so well and they focus on the money making jobs in the misguided belief that this will improve their business, whereas in fact all it does is erode reputation and customer confidence. Many are probably in the wrong line of work - its not typically a great earner and comes with lots of risk, uncertainty and overheads. You need some love of it otherwise frustration is inevitable.

Well said about giving time to wasters which coud be spent on good customers. Cheap and unhappy people suck the good out of everything and the sooner you can spot them and weed them out of your business the better.
@jeffamburgey7485

Greed and money unchecked ruins everything. A fair job for a fair price is easy to say, but a lot harder to find. If you can slip behind the wheel of an old Mercedes, even the unloved w115, it all just melts away for a while, you know your sitting in something that was produced by people who cared about what they were doing. No power windows, no power steering, just a overbuilt machine doing something in a way that does not, maybe cannot exist now. Unless of course we save them, so they can live on like they were made. The time will come, when that will be very desirable I think.
@Johnathan_Waters

There's an awful lot of very true and very insightful information in this video. Pierre and I have always gotten along, most likely because I'm not the "money grubbing" type of person that starts a repair shop and treats it like any other "business" and has NO interest in cars otherwise. I do NOT like those types of shop owners either, for the most part (with some exception). Furthermore, I don't really understand why someone would do this kind of thing... I believe in treating people (and customers) the way that **I** would like to be treated, and I always treat others the way that they treat me. For better or worse. If you treat me 100%, I always at least match their effort, or give back twice as much, if I can.

Good video, I'm dealing with one of the types of shops you mentioned right now. They represent themselves as a premium shop and have the prices to match. Was surprised when they tried to upsell me so much, and the work was done shoddily. Missing screw in interior, oil overfilled, clutch master not adjusted properly. Who knows what else they messed up. Super friendly until you come to them to fix their mistake, then it's nothing but defensiveness, and everything is a battle. This is a shop with nothing but five star reviews too. The shops that only have 1-2 mechanics are the best in my experience. Often, the owner knows what he's doing, but the techs don't.

I wonder which click farm they are paying for their reviews
@RothBeyondTheGrave
@RothBeyondTheGrave 2 года назад
Man...I guess due to the simple fact that most aren't mechanically inclined, it's easy to pull a fast one on the masses. The engine turns over & the customer didn't have to wait 2 weeks, so "great job!" Also, the click farm theory is a hard one to ignore. I do all my own work, but always need that indy backup just incase. There's only one place near me that calls themselves a Mercedes specialist shop, & they are the only place that actually knew what I was talking about when I said, "my c207 chassis". That was always my 1st subtle test. If I hint at a common issue of a decade plus yr old chassis & you still have to ask questions, that's all I need to hear to run not walk.

@@RothBeyondTheGrave That's so true. There have been several times where I was joking with someone to do something like grease their rotors to quiet their brakes down and they took me seriously so I had to correct them. Most people don't know the first thing about how cars work and just treat them like appliances.
@RothBeyondTheGrave
@RothBeyondTheGrave 2 года назад
@@Hedonistic0Frog strange isn't it? For something almost everyone is dependent on, you'd think a person would at least want a bare minimum, surface level understanding of how the machine works. What's even worse is those who only know Japanese ownership & then get their 1st Benz, BMW, etc. They then continue to "maintain" the Euro car like they did their Japanese car & find out the hard way what deferred maintenance ends up costing.

I like you, at least what you show on here. You sound like me and my relationship with the bitter failed ex-racers who populate much of the bicycle business, whining about customers who want something that isn’t their most profitable line, or blaming their failure to meet expectations on the newer wave of shops run by dedicated enthusiasts who want to build and serve the bicycle community, and do meet expectations. It’s definitely the long lasting relationships that make any business worth getting out of bed for. My reputation is one of being snobbish, because I choose what jobs I take on, and I don’t fit tacky nasty parts or parts which spoil the machine. Worst of all, apparently, is that I tell the customer “this is what I will do to it, because this is more appropriate”. I guess that makes me a snob. Having Aspergers helps, I find.
@RothBeyondTheGrave
