I like to have a mentality of "do at least 3 productive things today" when it comes to rest days and days off/holidays. Productive things could be uni work, walking, playing/writing music, drawing, or calling my parents, whatever accomplishes something with some effort. Even if they're small, having done at least a few tasks that isn't just passive resting makes me feel better overall.
@ItsAsparageese
@ItsAsparageese 2 года назад
Piggybacking on this: For me, the term "productive" connotes somewhat more specific tasks, but obviously relaxing and creative activities are also very important, and I love the current trend of reclaiming those things as being validly productive in their own right. However, for me personally, if I decide to do something "productive" with my day, I still tend (despite knowing better) to fail to prioritize certain self-care and generally calming restful activities. So I use the term "intentional" instead, and strive to do a few truly _intentional_ things every day, rather than just doing whatever comes up passively/impulsively. It's also helpful on days when my various chronic illness/disability issues make feeling "productive" hard, but somehow the middle ground of doing something "intentional" feels more achievable while still feeling like I got something out of the day and didn't waste it. It feels like I'm putting the bar for a "good" or "successful" day all the way on the ground and just asking myself to take one step forward instead of making even a tiny hop. I guess it's my version of a progressive-exercise easier variation on conceptualizing a "productive" day lol. This word choice causes me to give myself much more effective permission to relax and create and care for myself and my environment, and lets me keep those things separate from tasks I'd usually call "tasks" and put on lists and have feelings about. It helps me choose forms of entertainment and socialization that I get more real juice out of, instead of just going "oh well I don't feel like being productive so I'm not going to make any real choices and oops there went my day". So yeah! Obviously everyone's psychology around terms is subjectively different, and also I'm brutally ADHD so I don't naturally have as much of a grip on my mindfulness/intentionality as many people do (so to many people my deliberate intentionality may be just like their usual bare minimum default self-control, which boy do I envy lol) and I don't really have a working/consistent sense of time ... so my needs are a little nichey, haha. Everyone's experience will vary. But I wanted to toss this out here because this slight shift in word choice has helped me a lot, especially on restful days, so I hope this comes in handy for some other reader!
@JanneSala
@JanneSala 2 года назад
@@ItsAsparageese "Intentional" is a good word in this context as well. My use of "productive" with the activities I list is mainly based on the idea that I gain, or produce, something for myself, even if it's just developing an artistic skill or building social relationships. I think it depends on how you want to frame and think of the tasks you want to do during the day.

I like that you used the "regulate". It really struck me. I have a personality type where I need very strict regulation of my days or I will go into an "idle mode" of just staring at a screen. "Doomscrolling" took a big chunk of my life and though things got done through my week, my downtime was not regulated so I just stared at the screen in my hand. I was trying to live a less structured life "like normal people do". I get a lot of criticism for scheduling my fun like "today I plan to go look at the fish at the pet store" but when left to my own with an unregulated schedule just doesn't work for me. Such a simple word, but the spark I needed to decide to live how works for me best.

Sunday is my rest day. I spend part of my rest day decompressing (TV/video games/general laziness), but I set a limit. My rule is that I get to have a lazy morning, but after lunch, I do any outstanding chores and plan for the upcoming week. That way I don't waste my day, but I give my mind and body the rest they need

Yes and no. It's like any other swinging pendulum. We grow and learn from mistakes on one side, we swing to the other, learn and grow there, swing back a bit, and eventually find a healthy middle ground. I, too, need to be quite tough on myself in a lot of ways, that's probably my default preference for mitigating my worst traits, but many of my most valuable personal growth arcs in life have involved learning to be gentler with myself too. Everyone's different and has different core needs and beliefs about themselves and has different priorities. There's no best angle for everyone at any given time. We all need to learn to crack down on some things and be permissive and supportive to ourselves about others, and we all will go back and forth on these things to at least some extent for our whole lives. As long as you're always listening to the string (observing your own progress) and ideally occasionally checking a tuner (therapy, healthy feedback from supportive social environment), any gradual progress towards being perfectly in-tune is all good progress, even if you nudge a little sharp or flat at times along the way.

I recently quit going to the gym and am starting out calisthenics, it's painful physically and personally to realize that me being able to bench press 24kg didn't translate to being able to do 15 clean pushups without my shoulders hurting (and that's just one example), it felt like all that building strength for 2 years didn't pay off at all I'm now trying by best to get used to working out 1 hour every day with ONLY calisthenics workouts, and get used to eating less, i'm using your beginner's workout routine to start building up, i started out 2 days ago, and progress is coming insanely slow, but i'll get there...

I’m not a doctor. But I’ve heard that moving makes your blood circulate better, which brings oxygen and nutrients to your muscles faster. So a little bit of moving can help you recover when you’re fatigued from a workout. Yoga or going for a walk do this. It’s called “active recovery”.

If I don't physically move around all day I also struggle to fall asleep at night. I'm pretty sure I have RLS and it's generally very mild, and doesn't bother me most nights. But if I haven't moved enough, my legs throw a fit at bedtime. Worst it's ever been was unrelated to exercise though - I tried taking melatonin for the first time a couple months ago, and that's how I ended up laying awake in bed in agony, and also going down a rabbit hole learning about how RLS symptoms are caused by dopamine being too low relative to melatonin. (So maybe if you've got ADHD and can't sleep, proceed with extreme caution before taking melatonin lol)
