This is an extension of our Quail Feeding Do's and Don'ts video from earlier this year...see the link below if you need a refresher. Contains info on quail feed and treats, and a discussion on fodder. • Quail Feeding-Do’s & D...
Here in Las Vegas, with 4 long months of 109 to 127F, I hear you about HOT. Best time to raise quail, hatch, brood, and get of laying age. Not so great for anything else. LOL Thank you for your video. I'm reviewing and trying to make certain I have not missed anything for caring for my quail. I've been doing it now for 4 years, still consider myself new to it. So much to learn! Thank you again.
Good to know as a newbie. Got thyme and sage growing like crazy. Can use 0a bit of garden produce. Not crazy about raising mealworms though. I sprout seeds using canning jars.
This is such a great informative video. I have questions 1. Will growing the oregano and thyme in their outdoor aviary be ok, or will they eat too much? 2. Can they eat pumpkin? Can they eat sweet potato?
When you said they can eat paste and rice, do you mean cooked or uncooked? I've hear this several times but no one is clear about that. Thanks for the info.
Great video. Just got a few quail. And set some eggs in the Bator. Saw your video on incubating. Good info. We just started a bsf bin for our chickens Can quail eat those (maybe the smaller larvae)?
Millet is a good choice. Any of the heavy seeding plants however it’s be very hard and probably expensive to completely mimic nature in any enclosures as quail roam far and wide to gather what’s needed for their existence. For instance there are hardly any wild quail where I live.
I''ve been feeding insect larvae and insects that are in trash cans underneath my quail cage. It's not all poop in there. The quail have sand/soil boxes at all times and are throwing that in there as well. I shove the top layer aside and scoop up the cleaner part full of bugs/larvae. The quail devour it. So far so good. No problems. I'm wondering. If you can provide quail with adequate protein like that, and then lots of fodder (fresh sprouts, edible weeds, leaves, some grass seed heads from yard), do you think that could be a substitute for commercial feed?
Quail are wild birds by nature and certainly can survive without commercial feed but since they are not foraging free range they must have certain things. I diet with seeds and fodder would be essential and yes bugs will boost that protein.
I also started raising quail. I have coteric Bob White, and blue scale. I also am in East Texas little town south of Beaumont, Groves Texas. Where are you located? If you don’t mind me asking.
I've been trying to feed our quail which are raised on the ground lettuce, various fruits chopped and they wont eat it.. they wont eat anything other than commercial crumble which I am trying to get away from . started fodder.. will be getting soldier flies soon to start raising. hoping.
It’s hard to get a quail off that crumble. I will add that while they eat many foods they will always need seeds/grains in their diet. They will love the soldier flies
@@colonyhillshomestead4683 okay that's good to know that they can eat the lentil sprouts.. I did know that any bean or pea product unless it's out in the wild is something that has to be cooked before you give it to them same as with chickens. Thank you for your prompt response.
@@colonyhillshomestead4683 I have some rubbermaid totes I have added old cornmeal, feed, scraps, grass clippings, chicken/quail droppings & a few moist cow Patties mix well only once. Keep it pretty damp/wet. I have some old aluminum pans I set on top. Fill w/3/4” water for pressure. Shaded place & walla, in a about a week u have maggots (fly larvae). Big fat ones under your pans. Quail absolutely love em Pure protein
@@ritaholcombe9905 Yes, they are legumes. There is a study entitled: "A by-product of pinto beans in diets for quail in the laying phase." It is worth finding and reading.
My quail had 4 or 5 nights of -30 Celsius (-22 F) this winter. Tough birds indeed. This mornings visit I had to shovel about half a foot of snow out of their cage due to a storm last night.
