WHAT STARTED IGOROT DISCRIMINATION? | History Behind Igorot Misconceptions

Igorots have been suffering tremendous amount of discrimination, misconceptions, and mistreatment by their fellow 'lowland' Filipinos and even the educational system until this very day. The term 'Igorot' itself carry some very negative connotations for other Filipinos of today, which is ridiculous. Let's go back to history and realize how this discrimination/negative idea started.

If you really do some digging you'll find that our filipino people are related to the moors of africa. In fact that is how islam came to the filipines. At one point most of the filipines were muslims. We had saltans and everything. We called our selves moros (meaning moors) i tell my filipino friends this all the time. Even look at our swords, there is one that closely resemble middle eastern swords. The moros lead many revolts against the spaniards. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IPFrI_KMWwE.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--9zdLBNf8HE.html Lets help them know everything.

My wife is a very proud Igorot, we met each other and got married in Dubai where she was working as a nurse. She is very proud of her heritage, and I am too. Her family is very close to each other and they are wonderful people. That always can’t be said for other places in the Philippines. I am very fortunate to have met her, she is a wonderful wife and my best friend.

Meanwhile here in the US , Filipino Americans (specially the youth) are very curious about pre-hispanic culture of the Philippines. Cordillera tattoo and baybayin script has been adopted and popularize in recent years here. Many agree that the reason for this is Filipino diaspora are looking for a connection back to their heritage.

The misconception about us on how we look, the color of our skin, and so on is so deep-rooted that even an explanation will only end up on deaf ears. @@gungatz6696 It's not the tagalogs, tagalogs don't live near those people, even if there are few tagalog who does it's not just tagalogs there are many ignorant people, even other ethnicities use the word Igorot for black, they thought Igorots are short and dark skinned people. The Visayans always pretend to be victims, they generalize all Tagalogs while they themselves discriminate against other ethnicities. Look at this one "people from Maniluhh" lmao ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qAiV9tktrXM.html
@thisasiankidistrashfordram374
That's beautiful 😊. Fellow pinoys who discriminate against Igorots tend to be Tagalogs, maybe Ilocanos & Visayans too. Tagalog people look down on most other ethnic groups in North Luzon, Visayas & Mindanao. The Tagalog people have the privilege of being the largest ethnic group & the most mainstream culture in the Philippines. Spanish occupation mainly centered in Southern Luzon where the Tagalog groups were located. It seems that other indigenous/ethnic groups who successfully fought off or evaded Colonial rule, aren't as Hispanicized, & aren't european white-mestizos like many Tagalog & Ilocano people(believe & hope they are) are somehow "inferior" in their eyes 🙄🙄🙄.

I normally don't comment on youtube, but this strikes close to the heart. I agree that up until this day, many lowland Filipinos look at Igorots as uneducated, lowly people. I was born and raised here in Manila, but I'm always proud of being a full-blooded Igorot (both parents are from Mt. Province 😃). Many times have I experienced talking to people who are badmouthing Igorots (e.g. "ang b***/slow mo naman, para kang Igorot", or "bakit ganyan itsura mu? Para kang Igorot"), only to find out they are speaking to one 😂 (who is by the way among the top students in class, who even tutors them at times... Hehe). I hope there comes a time that correcting them won't be necessary anymore, since they already know who Igorots really are.

Sorry to be so late: Clark AFB, Luzon PI I have a lot of respect and affection for the Negritoes. I believe they are one of the groups showing DNA descended from the Denisovan heritage. In 1965 / 66, My father was stationed at Clark AFB as a career US Air Force NCO. I was a teenager attending the local US High School. That was a great time and place to grow up in many ways. There was almost constant turmoil of various types as Clark AFB was an entry and exit route for the Vietnam War activities. USO shows almost always stopped at Clark on their way to Vietnam. There were several Filipinos who became close friends with my parents, even taught my mother how to paint in oils. One who bought my father’s car when we left for the next duty station. There was real adventure in riding the Rabbit bus to Baguio for mountain weekends. Also in hiking to climb Mount Pinotuba with warnings of communist Huks being active. Every year there was a memorial recreation of the Bataan Death March with a survivor of the original one. Due to the priority of supporting efforts in the Vietnam War, theft became something of an issue on base. The following occurred during our stay there: Major cash robbery at the military bank and fled away Theft of a fire engine on base by turning on the lights and sirens, out the front gate Theft of part of the wing of a C-130 under repairs, disappeared The base command was pretty furious and looking for a good solution. They were approached by the Chief of the local Negritoes, similar to African Pygmy tribes, who asked for the jobs. The US Command were hesitant about this until one of the Filipino officers described the tribe’s Participation in World War II. After the Japanese Army occupied Clark Field, the Negritoes went to ground locally. Throughout the war they did things like slip into the Japanese barracks at night and cut the throat of every other man. The Japanese greatly feared the presence of this tribe in their area. After that discussion, There were 4 -foot Negrito guards, with 5-foot single-barrel shotguns and large knives, nearly everywhere. There were no more thefts during our stay there. Even the Huks seemed to have found other interests. The Negritoes also led us on our scouting expeditions to climb Mount Pinotuba, which had not erupted yet. The only payment they accepted was American cigarettes. They are a wonderful group to work with and always surprising. Here is an excellent video on the various tribes of Luzon. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JIl4xPc6BkY.html And an excellent article in the UK Daily Mail. www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-9886821/Filipino-ethnic-group-Denisovan-DNA-world-study-finds.html Regards

when the Spaniards always ambushed by the ISNAG TRIBES when they entered lower Apayao in cordillera their Church and garrison in Mataguisi, Pudtol, Apayao where also burned their priest where also beheaded along with a number of INDIOS and spanish soldiers who stationed there, the spaniards went deeper into the upper apayao but still the same scenario happed. until the Spaniards abandon their campaign in Apayao and never return again until the Americans entered and introduce education, medicine, religion and country music cos its the only way to subdue them not by war. now isnag people still practice their traditions, they are very proud of their identity

When I found out I was adopted, I wished I was part Igorot. Turns out I am a mix of Lumad (Mindanao), Waray, Cebuano, Palawanon, Anglo-American, and Spanish. Had I not been adopted, my surname would still be of English origin. My American ancestor was said to be a fire fighter during the American period, married a Spanish descent from Davao, and had two sons. One of those sons had an illegitimate son, with a pure Waray woman, who became my birth grandpa. That grandpa married a woman of Lumad and Cebuana descent. I am excited for my dna kit to arrive to confirm if these stories are true.

Great subject matter btw and really the indigenous people ie aetas/negritos should be acknowledged as the original people of the Philippines. They came to Phils 3000BC ago according to some studies. It is so sad how all these misconceptions are ingrained in majority of the filipinos. But also want to comment at 4:40 when you mentioned Spain sold Philippines to the US. It wasn't that they sold Phils but Spain lost the war against the US and made to sign a peace treaty relinquishing control of their overseas colonies which included Philippines. I am an Igorot Tagalog Ilocano Kampangan Chinese French Spanish, Portuguese. My Portuguese Chinese ancestor was a close friend of Jose Rizal and became part of the KKK and fought against the Spaniards. His son, my great grandfather fought against the Japanese and some Igorots helped him, although he was later captured by the Japanese and was beheaded by the Japanese here in the Cordilleras. My Ilocano Igorot ancestors were the pioneers here in Baguio and had a shop when Maharlika building was still the stone market, the heart of the city. I am proud to be an Igorot. If you are and/or have been in Baguio, you probably have seen me because of my unique features. Excellent content! 💪🔥💯🦅Salasalamat! God bless and more power.

@@FDGSTAGES You are welcome kailyan! 👍👍☺️ I envy other cordillerans who are still living in the forest, so blessed. For Baguio had been slowly losing it's essence as part of the cordilleras because of so called "progress and modernization". Whenever I get the chance to go to the Cordilleran forests, I just run for hours on end shirtless, till all the fresh air and the spirits of the forest enters my lungs into my heart flowing through my veins and into every part of my body giving me an exhilirating rush of bliss and serenity no words can explain. haha. really makes me want to go to the forest right now. hahaha. I stll remember the time when Baguio smelled like pine trees.😔🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲 English was the lingua franca here in Baguio so my ancestors spoke to me in English. Like my great grandma in my father's side, whenever she talked to me it was only in English, akala ata Amerikano apo nya sa tuhod. haha. Then Tagalog became the Lingua Franca... My grandma in my mother's side is a Taga-ilog (tagalog) who married my grandfather who is a Taga-bundok (igorot ilocano) but she spent most of her life here. My grandfather became the head assessor of Baguio in the past, but nothing political, just an ordinary worker and public servant. Lately, more and more people are speaking Ilocano and other native languages so i need to catch up with my vocabulary especially highland ilocano. haha. 😬 and your videos are very helpful! 👍👍💯🔥❤️

This is the same in every southeast Asian country. Vietnam had tribal people called montagnards who speak an austronesian language. They were discriminated against by the Vietnamese, so many Americans recruited them in special forces during the Vietnam war. Indigenous Taiwanese are austronesian speakers but are discriminated by Han ethnic Chinese. Taiwan wasn’t originally a “Chinese” area. The Chinese colonized it and forced out the indigenous people. All these people were darker skinned than the Vietnamese and Chinese.

True the first time i work in Manila no 1 believes that i'm an igorot because what they know about igorots are pandak,my buntot,maitim at kulot Ang buhok,I explained to them that it's the aeta that they were describing not igorots.

That depends on the way how others look to our cultures.. Coz I don't think keeping our cultures alive was a bases to be called uncivilized.. Coz as I know Manny of our fellow igorots are now successful in any field they have chosen.. Such as education, politics, sports pageants and many more.. And also lately I just learned that majority of the member of the Philippine police are igorots. Maybe you can call us people of the mountain as true meaning of the igorot word.. But that was much more nice to hear than to be called indio a Spanish word which means idiot a word use by the Spanish reffering to those who became s subject to their rule.. ( im not saying this because i was reffering to some one. But only to share some information that was according to our history)Let should spread love, appreciation and respect.. And not sorrow, hate and mis understanding because of our own ignorance.. Peace to all ( sorry for the wrong grammar, spelling and the way my sentences were constructed. Coz I'm just a simple gardener with low educational background)

They tried to turn the Igorots into what they did to the Peruvians, a slave miner population. However, the men and their chieftains of the Igorots, every time they would come down to trade would intentionally confuse them for these leaders already knew what the Spaniards were after.
