To be fair to Seagal, at the time of the Arsenio interview and well into the early 2000s, pretty much everyone thought Van Damme had no competition background. It was only in the last ten years or so that it all came to light.
1st movie I seen van damme in is called No Retriet No Surender in the 80s I think that's his 1st martial arts movie but I looked him up and he's a Belgium style martial artist but he was a bad guy in that movie lol
Yep. I saw him lose a fight to a ham sandwich, once. Segal has never competed. He's only done demonstrations. NOT the same. Everyone he has ever demonstrated with just lies down for him. Notice how they all try to rush him, then he redirects momentum, maybe a joint lock, that's it. That's not going to win a real fight. In addition, Segal seems to only bully untrained guys. What if someone who is trained as well or better in a system came to him? They'd wipe the floor with him, that's what. That's why he keeps turning down challenges.
I am a martial artist myself. Part of true martial arts training is respect, Respect for yourself and respect for others. I really liked Steven segal and i thought he was an awesome martial artist. That all changed when i saw numerous reports of how he treated other people . I have personally met Chuck Norris on his kick drugs out of America campaign. Chuck is a down to earth great guy and treated us like we were on the same level as him. I really liked watching Van Dam fight and i still have all of his movies. Steven segal lost my respect when he disrespected other actors and his fans. Steven, without your fans you are nothing.
I have rarely encountered someone as perpetually petty, aggrieved, and ungrateful as Steven Seagal. He is a walking masterclass on how to be a master with no class.
His hairstyle looks like a fabric rug fitted and stuck to his head with vampire front cut just like Travolta's and reminds me of 1960s Dean Martin Matt Helm movie with robotic guy with silver dome attached to head.
There is a reason why Van Damme is still popular at his age and well liked and making things people enjoy where Seagal is universally hated and only makes bottom barrel crap.

Van damme is a really great guy. Humble and admitted that his ego got too big during the 90s. The fact that van damme is in such great shape today is a testament to his commitment and skills.
I work in Los Angeles. I had a client come see me and we got to talking about life. She mentioned that she was stressed because her daughter had substance abuse issues and had just entered rehab. I of course was sympathetic, that has to be tough. At the time I had just that day watched a video on Van Damme and his addictions and recovery. I brought up the video and said how even when people have addictions they can beat it. This woman, about 45, attractive, paused and then said “I met Van Damme in the late 90s when I went to Vegas with my girlfriends for a girl’s trip. He invited us back to his hotel room and offered us cocaine. We declined. Then he took off his clothes and started doing push-ups, then he grabbed a banana and wanted to know if one of us would put it in his ass.” I just blinked at her and thought, “Of all the celebrities that had beat addiction I brought up the one person she’d met and had a strange story about.”

As someone who has studied martial arts for more than 30 years I find Seagal's comments to be the antithesis of what our training teaches us--humility and respect for others.

Something you might not know is that Chuck Norris’s real name is Carlos. I met him around 2009 at an old school Frosty Freeze in his hometown of Chester Ca. Him and his wife were chillin in lawn chairs on the sidewalk out front watching the 4th of July parade go by. I talked with him for a few minutes and he handed me a signed card with a picture of himself doing a round house kick that read “kick drugs out of America!” 🇺🇸 He shook my hand and told me God bless. He was so down to earth and super cool.

To be honest, chuck norris is in incredible shape for his age and still has great martial arts abilities. He is far better then Seagal. Van Dammes modesty and humility speaks volumes.
Chuck Norris was National and World Karate champion for quite some time in the 60's and 70's. Segal to me has become a joke! Aikido is a defensive art. Segal does not have the humilty that are requires!!

I think that if he'd have approached his career with humility and didn't try to put down his peers to make himself look better, even with all the 'Steven Segallsifications', he may probably still be appreciated and respected to this day. It's always been my own experience, as well, that the real deal martial artists don't tend to boast.
Stupid from Seagal bringing up Chuck’s age. The interviewer clearly meant Chuck from the 60-80s when he was younger in his prime, not when he’s 70 plus. Norris was an absolute beast in his day and would clean the streets.
I've been studying martial arts since '84. MJW was literally in the same competition I was back around '87. I've always looked up to him. You want legit? MJW is as legit as it gets!💯
As a former amateur boxer, who fought 34 fights, but trained five days a week sparring a minimum of five 3-minute rounds every day (for 9 years) against boxers who were much, much better than me (several were professional), I can tell you this about Steven Segal: he has never had his ass beat. And no, I'm not inferring he has never had his ass beat because he is good. It's the opposite. He has no idea what it's like to get beaten, badly, day in and day out because he simply never committed to learning how to fight. There is a transformation that occurs when you get beaten daily for months. Eventually, your fear becomes totally controlled. Instead of being scared on the inside, you simply respect the other guy for what damage he can do, but you aren't scared. You also stop thinking and talking about how much ass you can kick. Instead, you learn getting your ass beat is your proudest accomplishment, because that is what taught you to know what you're made of. In a word, you become humbled. You know what you're made of. You respect everyone for the damage they may be able to inflict, but you truly are not ever going to operate out of fear. So, no. Shitty fat ass Segal isn't a fighter. I doubt he knows what it feels like to be hit in the face. He certainly has no respect for others and talks too much about how much ass he can kick. Kind of shows his true deceit.
Respect! I am 135 lbs and I've been training bjj for years. My friends know i train and ask me if I could beat up 200 lb guys. To which I respond no. If it's a sloppy untrained out of shape steven seagal looking 200 then maybe when I tire him out. Most of the people in my class are bigger than me and I get humbled everyday but it has made me comfortable when I'm being suffocated or in a painful submission and it makes the hard fought wins, against bigger opponents, much more rewarding. Fighting is an ego killer and Steven is full of ego so hes not a fighter.
I respect your opinion but do some research on Michael Jai White he is better than most people know find some of the people he trained most real martial artist want fight in MMA or things like that because what they do would kill people I was a fighter when I was younger I boxed for the army for three years off and on and I fought in Thailand Muay Thai also and I did taekwondo and some other things but I respect you and your opinion always much love and respect to you and yours
I have also watched some of his older kick boxing videos, real competition and the dude has a mean right side kick. He executes it very well and people just almost walk into it lol. He'd get Seagal in the gut once and Seagull wouldn't want anymore.
As far as Michael Jai White credentials, at usadojo.com I found the following citation: "Michael Jai White is a Black Belt in seven karate styles and he has won 26 martial arts titles, including U.S. Open, the North American Open, and he was the New England Grand Champion. Michael Jai White is a Black Belt in seven different styles including Shotokan, Taekwondo, Kobudo, Goju Ryu (under Master Eddie Morales), Tang Soo Do, Wushu and Kyokushin, with a specific focus in Kyokushin." If this doesn't make him a "tough guy" or an actual martial artist, what does?
I was thinking the same...even if you mention the Kyokushin only, it is a very hardcore karate school, with hardcore training and conditioning and full contact competitions. Besides, Seagal said MJW isn't a martial artist!!!! C'mon, if a person who dedicates the whole life practicing martial arts isn't a martial artist, then who is? Martial artist doesn't necessary mean to be a pro fighter, but to be dedicated to study martial arts. It was a total nonsense from Seagal.

@Kirby Little You are trolling right? Either you are trolling you are just a delusional sheep. Everyone knows who Chuck Norris was, he was a professional kick boxer. Steven Seagal is simply an actor like most of the fighters you see on T.V. Anyway look at segal today and look at all of his counterparts in the action film industry. They all still look good and are in shape, because they in fact practiced their arts throughout the years. Seagal is a fat nobody.....
Thing is there is no evidence that Seagal could hold his own against any NBA player that lifts weights. It is not hard to force someone to the floor when they are 50 pounds smaller and a head shorter. I'm not saying he could not beat up a NBA player in his prime but we'll never know as the evidence is not there and now he is elderly. Chuck Norris was a very good kickboxer, even if it was point fighting, which is much better than nothing, had solid basic clinch grappling skills (brown belt in judo) and is now a black belt in BJJ. Adjusted for age Chuck is far more impressive because he has credentials in credible martial arts that work on larger opponents. Aikido is very effective as long as you use it against untrained people that are 50 pounds smaller than you. Any 30 year old bodybuilder would just muscle his way out of that wrist twisting stuff and retaliate with a slap in the face. Saying that someone is good in martial arts because they are able to bully some far smaller guy is like saying Shaq O'Neal or Andre the Giant are great martial artists because they could do that. Your skill (if any) only shows when you are going toe to toe with someone bigger (and preferably younger) than you.
Let’s be real… Van Damme was very good. Even if the plot for some of his movies wasn’t the greatest you could tell he gave it 100%. His onscreen fights could not be rivaled IMO until Jackie and Jet hit the scene.

Most people get their knowledge of martial arts from watching movies. In a movie, everything is choreographed and edited to look great on screen. It's not the real thing.
Point-fighting in tournaments doesn't mean anything. Those aren't real fights. The only way to truly measure someone's fighting skills is to put them in a real fight. MMA would be about the closest measure of overall fighting ability - however, there are still rules. In a real fight, there are no rules, no refs, no stoppages, no stand-ups, no one gets disqualified for hitting their opponent with a weapon, & so on. A bar-fight or a street-fight is a whole other world from a tournament or a MMA fight - which is controlled, structured & has safety measures in place. You are correct about the ballet thing though. Not sure on the details, but Van Damme does have some ballet in his background. It's the reason for his crazy flexibility, balance & his ability to pull off those awesome jumping-spin kicks. Fairly sure I've seen videos of him actually performing them & it was just as smooth & pretty as in his movies.
