What the Cleveland Guardians Could Get In Signing Catcher Mike Zunino

Logan Allen, Angel Martinez, Gabe Arias and Zach Plesac for Sean Murphy. 3 "tier 2" prospects and an arm to absorb some innings for the major league club. This keeps are top 6 prospects in home and keeps the prospects with the clearest path to playing time.

Anyone who has seen Zunino play or know of him. Knows this dude is the truth. He had a down year last year due to injury. But in 2021 he was easily the best catcher in the AL

If we aren’t getting Murphy then why not Kirk or Jansen

I say Trade Myles Straw in the Sean Murphy deal!

Had to pause it when you mentioned Zunino potentially getting a QO…this is an organization that wouldn’t even give Michael Brantley a QO. That’s just not happening.

Not really pleased with this signing because to me Zunino is not as good a catcher as far as handling pitchers as we had last year and while he by far offers superior power and is a threat to hit a homer on every swing, it comes with a batting average just as bad as what we had so to me this is a down grade overall as much as it is an upgrade to our lineup with the power he has. The thing is he is such a swing a miss power hitter he has to hit in the botto of a lineup meaning he isnt going to drive in many runs with what homers he hits. I just feel its a stop gap option and I dont blame Cleveland for ignoring Sean Murphy because look what the Braves had to pay him after giving up what they did to get him. I mean the Guardians did well not to give up any of the future to get a catcher and I do like the Zunino deal is only one year meaning we wont be stuck with him for longer as he ages. It also didnt break the bank and we didnt give up anything in a trade to get him. So in that aspect its a win. But next winter we are just going to need a catcher again. I dont see Zunino being more than a one year stop gap and I have no real excitment for Bo Naylor as I feel he wont make it as a good catcher. I also dont think his bat is as good as his brother Josh but even if he hits big league pitching when he gets there he will never be as good a catcher as we are used to having. I was much higher on Josh Naylor when he was an elite prospect coming up in the minors before we traded for him. He did suffer serious injuries and we will never know how good he may have been due to those injuries but I dont think his brother is truly as good a hitter as Josh was in the minors so I feel like Naylor will end up not being our answer long term since its his offense not his defense every prospect list raves about
