when you get served with a search warrant and things are seized, you get a receipt for property as well. this is in case that you ever get it back if it is released from evidence after trial or investigation, like say, if you're innocent or it becomes clear it was not involved in the crime.

This defendant's rights are being fully protected, but in this country we have a law called the First Amendment which protects the press (and therefore the public's ) right to news coverage. They are NOT releasing anything close to all of the evidence they have. I know it's a right-wing talking point to blame the media for everything, but this guy is not being deprived of his rights. Washed it and probably thought blood would be gone, and he would never get caught anyway. This is not that uncommon for murderers to keep weapon, clothing they wore, etc. Stupid but they do do it.
