This week in the world of cycling, we learnt that riding to work is good for you, more on that in cycling shorts, and that Madrid is going to ban all non-resident cars from the city centre from November, so that’s going to be a very cycling friendly city soon.
Their public rental bikes are already very cool - gotta love a bit of pedal assist. We also learnt that Sam Bennett, whilst good at pulling wheelies and winning Giro stages, does NOT empty the dishwasher at home.
Haha, yes, this was following on from a tweet that I made on Sunday, saying that many of the Giro pros would be back to normality the day after the race, doing things like unpacking the dishwasher, something flatly denied by Bennett’s fiancee Tara, who claims he doesn’t even know where their dishwasher is.
Maybe he’s more of a traditional sink full of soapy water and wash up with a sponge kinda guy. Anyway, we also learnt this week, that it’s not over until the fat soprano sings.
That’s right - few would have bet against Simon Yates winning this years Giro d’Italia with 4 days to go, but he showed some initial weakness to Prato Nevoso on stage 18, and then completely capitulated the following day on the Colle delle Finestre, saying that he had no strength, and losing a whopping 39 minutes to Chris Froome.

I do really think that the way UCI works is making any favour to cycling. I mean, what have they learned since 1999? I think a case like Froome's should be solved quicker. Well, not hurried, but quicker. The situation to be in the start line of a GT like the Giro with his case not solved, is just... a shitty situation, let's be clear. You get a 'positive' test and it doesn't get cleared 8 months later? Come on.

something to take a moral highground on... americas prison industrial complex? reparations for slavery? the wars in the middle east ? something not that comparatively important - doping in cycling. but as a typically middle/upper class white pursuit it is no surprise that we can be selectively moral - as and when we choose... slavery? get over it...

The 'Tiger Slam' is a reference to Tiger Woods holding all four majors in golf at the same time.The only golfer in the modern era to achieve it, Woods won 3 majors in 2000 and the remaining major in 2001 to hold all 4 at the same time. Similar to Froome winning the TDF and Vuelta in 2017 and now the Giro in 2018. Basically means you hold them all but haven't won them in the same calendar year. The connection with Woods and cycling? Who knows.

Gotta love that moderate level-headed approach to the Froomey Problem. A lot of comentators of the Giro in my country have been very black and white about it, and, to be fair, rules say he can race. I don't believe one bit after seeing Icarus that at any high level of any sport the competitors won't take advantage of every single legal and illegal loophole to win. Competition with no fair-play dictates these ugly schemes.

What Froome was apolitical epic! Being one of the race favorites he's going to be testes after every stage. Team Sky is a well funded and can go to lengths that other teams can only dream of, GNC's video of the vehicles Team Sky brought to Italy, but they can't swap out samples like the Russians did at the winter Olympics back in 2014. This was truly epic!

Massive respect for Froome, incredible courage and bravery. The best attack in the last decade? Have to say even if he is banned due to the salbutamol case I will still support him and respect him. People make it sound like he is on EPO, he's not. If he is on drugs it is such a minimal advantage and I believe it was not his intention to dope.

When I was first told about the 86km breakaway, I thought it was crazy. However, when you compare how Froome tends to peak at specific points in a grand tour (normally when others are faltering), the time was mainly gained on the descent, that Dumoulin had no real help from his companions and Dumoulin's power figures for the crucial parts of the stage were basically identical to Froome's and that there were no record breaking times up the climbs, it does all add up. And quite easily so IMO.

I get everyone's scepticism regarding Froome. And even though I'm not really a fan of him, I believe he shouldn't be put under so much doubt. After all, it's natural that cycling, being the physically hard sport it is, will always have a relationship with performance enhancers of some sorts. But that, for me, doesn't reduce the beauty of its big battles. In the end, the capable guys win the big races.

2018 Giro fantastic and so much more exciting than the so predictable TdF outcomes. Bravo Froome. He completely deserved his epic victory. It will be part of cycling lore for as long as the sport exists IMHO. The Colle delle Finestre will have its credentials burnished as a really tough stage by the way it reshuffled the GC so dramatically.

Froome only broke away from 1 guy people. He didnt ride away from the peleton. Its just no one except Dumolin had a reason to chase him. Yates was dead along with the other guys in the top 5 which showed the day after stage 19. Dumolin just didnt have the legs plain and simple. Bad tactics to add on. Froome made time on the decsent and held it then gained on the climb where he is way better than dumolin. Froome's power profile was nothing insane, just normal W/Kg of other pro's except he was fresh enough to do it. the others were too tired

To add to this. Froome said he was tested twice per stage (before and after the stage). This, the fact that it's not really unbelievable and that Sky's tactic was to peak in the last week makes me conclude that the win was clean.

Hi Tommy, I'm curious if you could point me to those power numbers. I understood there was a transponder problem on his Velon power data and Velon just displayed a consistent 350W. I've searched and couldn't find them. Would be an especially unfortunate coincidence if those power numbers were lost precisely in this stage.

Being part of the Beta test for Road Grand Tours I wouldn’t say that Zwift have much to worry about for a while yet. Unless you do have a fairly high spec gaming PC or laptop then it really does struggle with frame rate. A fairly modern midrange PC or laptop is currently seeing around 10 fps which is like very much like a flip book cartoon. To bring it to acceptable levels in the 30+ fps range it is going to need some serious optimisation including a cut back in graphical details.

Hello, really appreciated your approach to the Froome victory. It is easy to blame cyclists when they are found positive and praise them when they win. Look, I am not a fan of Froome, I think he looks angular and atrocious on the bike, I think his pedaling style is comically rapid, I think his team is like the Real Madrid of cycling (an assemblage of all-stars and too-deep pockets) and I also think that Sky is willing to push the rules to the breaking point. But, three points, 1) Until proven dirty, Froome is clean 2) Yates completely collapsed, a complete capitulation 3) No amount of drugs can make you a better bike handler and Froome flies down mountains now.
@jsfoster100
@jsfoster100 6 лет назад
Hey, Stage 19 was spectacular. What made it work for Froome is Team Sky just driving the peloton to exhaustion for 2/3 of the stage. Froome was protected all through till he took off up the hill at 80km to go. No one was left to challenge him at that moment, the race was in disarray and exhausted. Team Sky rode conservatively all week conserving their strength, but especially Foome's strength reserves. Everyone else raced every day. All Froome had to do at 80km was ride like hell, not break a record, there was no one to challenge him at that point.

The way I see it, salbutamol is able to be used under a TUE. Then if an independent doctor can find a need for it, this is just professional sport finding a competitive edge. It's hardly doping on the scale of US Postal or most of the pro-peloton in the late 90s. The only way to remove "doping" from this era of cycling is to remove TUEs but that would then result in a series of riders with naturally obtained illnesses or ailments being unable to compete. I just don't think that we'll ever see a peloton in any grand tour that doesn't want to do whatever it takes within the rules to win. This statement can extend to any professional sport. It's a shame and I'm saying this as someone who grew up watching Lance Armstrong and got into cycling because of said Texan. I don't feel betrayed, I don't feel I lack trust in the modern peloton. I just want to see professional cyclists not put themselves in danger to obtain such a competitive advantage. This year's Giro has been fantastic to watch and I maintain a large dollop of optimism that this will not be marred by the media. I know not all of you will share my opinion and I respect that as much as I hope you respect mine.

Generally its also in the way both teams handled the case. With Yates the team held its hands up right away and owned up to not getting the proper TUE with Froome, Sky denied any wrong doing and contested the results. Both are equally valid ways to handle it... one just is a whole lot more uncomfortable for us as fans.

Guys, the discussion about Froome was excellent. I am happy to see no one is shying away from the fact that doping still exists and will always exist (for Heaven's sake marathoners were using coca leaves in the late 19th century). Professional athletes in MOST sports will try to stay "ahead of the curve" when is comes to WADA testing etc. My major issue in the past is singling out certain cyclists and not others for whatever reason (and to be honest the reason is irrelevant) e.g. Armstrong in the VERY HEAVY doping era while undoubtedly Ullich etc were also involved in many ways. In any case, many of the "heroes" of our sport are guilty but have shown us amazing performances regardless. Am I skeptical of Froome....yes I am. But I enjoy the sport immensely and I don't care. He was courageous to go off the front at 80 to go and stay away. Yes, Lance used PEDs but he changed the sport for the better in many ways and IMHO trained harder and differently than his competitors who were also using PEDs...What's my point? The sport is awesome and beautiful. Let them race...we mortals will always be in awe of their feats regardless of the skeptics and the truth (which may never be known). I just wish Froome had a personality...like Sagan! LOL

Having been in a World Tour level team and actually ridden the Tour, I do have to wonder how much Dan knows about when it comes to doping, that he is not letting on. Obviously I don’t expect any rider to point fingers at previous team mates, but he cannot be as blind to it all as he presents here. If you believe Tyler Hamilton’s, as well as others, account to be true, it would seem the peloton is very aware of what teams and riders are doing what. Hamilton may have been a decade earlier, but considering the big names that have been busted, or near as dammit, in the last 10 years alone, it is quite clear the culture of doping has gone nowhere.

Ben Clark it's due to my history in the sport that I said I think things are far far better than they were in the early 2000's and before that. I'm not close enough now to know, but I'm pretty confident that the overall level of cheating from then to now is like night and day. I'm not saying that there's no cheating, not at all, and there's undoubtedly more work to be done, but the sport is moving in the right direction. Of course I can't say this with 100% certainty, it's just my educated guess.
@TheBClark88
@TheBClark88 6 лет назад
Thanks for the considered and detailed response Dan. I can only hope the sport is headed in a better direction, but most of the evidence the regular punter can see doesn't necessarily point in that direction. In the Armstrong / Pantani era, pro cyclists moved from guesswork and steroids, to a more measured approach using EPO, and then onto blood bags when anything except microdosing EPO got too risky. So I don't think its too much of a stretch to say doping in cycling moves on and does it everything it can to stay ahead of the WADA testers. All of Froome's and Sky's reasoning and behaviour these days (claiming they found new ways to better, the drug positives that do come up are for legitimate medical uses, promising people they are clean) are just the same excuses from the Armstrong years on a loop - at least to my ear. They aren't the only ones - but they are the worst offenders. Thanks again for responding - and heres hoping you are right and I am too paranoid.
@daniellloyd100
@daniellloyd100 6 лет назад
As I said, I don't know if I'm right, it's just an educated guess. What I will say is that the difference between now and the Armstrong era is the pressure from sponsors to be clean. Most sponsors will have a clause which says they can pull out if there are a certain number of positive tests on a team. That's quite an incentive not to cheat, because you not only put your own career at risk, but also that of 25 other riders and 30+ staff.

I think Dan's analogue regarding being cheated on is very accurate. Having only started watching bike racing in the last 3 years my first response to watching amazing achievements like Froome's is never that of skepticism as I am yet to be 'cheated on'. I have to take a step back and make myself think about the possibility that these riders may still be cheating in some way. I imagine that if one of the riders I have grown to love (e.g. Froome) does get caught cheating it will completely change my experience of watching races.

It's a good thing the GCN crew seems to weigh in broad opinions. I believe there is more scepticism about Froome's appearance at the giro and his spectacular performance in stage 19 outside the English speaking world then inside it. And it's really hard to report neutrally on this topic. I recognise it is especially hard for most us to doubt the teams and riders we support. We've all been there if you've followed cycling for a number of years. It's not just Sky or Froome. We all want to believe and enjoy those outstanding race performances. But let's not kid ourselves. Cycling could really do with a small dose of healthy scepticism between all the absolute cynics and fervent apologists. We are at a point where, even though things are much better than 15 years ago, riders and teams do not naturally have the benefit of the doubt. That is not to say we should consider anyone guilty before a final verdict is out. But having positively tested riders in active competition is just not something we can afford. Let them clarify their case, or serve a ban before rejoining the peloton. It was a just a monumental mistake and bad news for the sport of cycling that Froome started at this year's Giro. A lot of this drama could've been avoided if the UCI just handled the salbutamol case quicker. Sky could've also been wiser by not letting Froome compete. This would've been done by any other pro-team if one of their riders failed a doping test. Even for a rider of the caliber of Froome. Don't get me wrong, I'm honestly hoping he can clear his name. But to convince everyone out there he needs to do so in the most convincing way possible. And being in competition, displaying extraordinary feats, sure doesn't help. It just makes this issue more complicated. Now, here we are as cycling fans, having another contentious subject on our plates, being polarised again. While the broader public still believes cycling to be the most doping-ridden sport, this new controversy arises. All the people involved at the UCI, Giro, Sky, should have taken their collective responsibilities and protected the sport. Even if that meant keeping Chris Froome out of active competition in the meantime.
@Robbo511
@Robbo511 6 лет назад
I honestly agree with most of what you have said here. My only real argument here is that had Froome decided to not compete this year, he would miss out on the chance to complete a third consecutive tour. This would be fair if Froome were found to have intentionally exceeded his dosage to gain advantage but assuming the case goes in his favor he has missed the chance to complete that feat, one he may never again get the chance to do.

Wise, wise words. I was so happy to see Froome winning the Zoncolan stage. I was seeing him suffering on that climb closely followed by Yates and the next day he did not perform too well. So I thought wonderful, he has done it clean. Maybe he will not win a grand tour so easily anymore but can still put in epic performances that few can match. Then came the stage when he destroyed everyone and I thought that we all have been `taken for a ride` literally, once again

Whatever your (one's) opinion on whether he should have been there or not, I just can't see why that stage 19 performance is being questioned. Chris Froome (not some neo-pro) put about a minute into Dumoulin up 3 mountains and about 2 going down them . Chased on the flats by a group of 3 (doing work) that wasn't working brilliantly well together. Last climb no faster than or even slower than some of his rivals. It just seems plain credible, and incredible. There's only so much advantage you can get from some extra Salbutamol from September last year.

Depends what you mean by "English-speaking world" really. The Guardian and Cycling News are openly hostile towards anything Froome and Sky do. Cycling News in particular with their podcast seemed preoccupied with how badly Froome was doing in their first two Giro rest day shows and spoke more about him than Simon Yates (and earlier Chaves) lighting the race up. There's been far more balance here and on the Cycling Podcast, a balance which is refreshing - and I'm not speaking as a fan of Froome or Sky (because I'm not one, not once all the snake oil started to wear off anyway - I've been watching pro cycling for years and genuinely thought they were different, when in many ways they aren't. I don't, however, think they're doping like the old days, racing as a whole seems different now, and it was refreshing to see Froome, Dumoulin, Pinot, Yates and Chaves all have difficult days on one day or another. The race became as much about managing the bad days as it did making the most of the good days) Secondly, Froome hasn't tested positive. You may think this mere semantics but we're dealing in "legalese" here. It's Salbutamol, he exceeded an allowed dosage - it's different, and whilst it looks bad at the same time he's well within his rights to keep riding because this isn't EPO or similar, and if The Guardian hadn't leaked this we wouldn't know anything about it at all. Sure, the rules should probably change, but at the moment that's how things are. Ethics are a whole other thing, however. I think the Giro was a sh*tshow from that perspective. Thirdly, you use the term "extraordinary feat" - personally I consider it spectacular rather than extraordinary for Froome. He gained most of the time (more than a minute) on the descent and a chunk more on the flat, because Dumoulin didn't descend as quickly in that group and because Dumoulin and others didn't/couldn't work together to rein him back on the flat. The climbs were pretty even. To address a wider issue and not just a response to you, I think this is the problem cycling faces. It's dogged by comparisons with the past, both good and bad. Froome rides well, with the controversy surrounding him it reminds some people of Landis. Phillippe Gilbert attacks with 40 to go at Flanders, nobody bats an eye as he's a hero (and rightly so, that was immense). Froome looks good, suspicious. Froome looks bad, makes previous achievements look suspicious. Froome's consistent, suspicious. You get the drift. I think the problems partly arise from taking things at face value or "only reading the headlines". "Froome takes 3 minutes", or "attacks from 80km out" sounds really dramatic and suspicious if that's all you take note of. With a bit of digging, you realise that maybe it's not as suspicious as at face value, for the reasons outlined above. On the same note, Froome's test at the Vuelta, everyone lumps this in with the Contadors and the Armstrongs and Ben Johnson and Justin Gatlin and so on, when it's not in the same league at all. But the man in the street doesn't care enough to look beyond the headline, and nor do the mainstream media make enough of the distinction. This is the problem cycling faces.

Want to point out that it is factually incorrect to state that Froome made up half his time on the descent. He did take risks and absolutely railed it and it was amazing but it only accounts for 22% of his time made. He continued to make time on the chase of 2 domestiques and 3 GC guys, which included the world TT champ no less. To say it wasn't a hard chase is cute as I'm sure Dumoulin wasn't interested in his title defence just as Pinot didn't want time over Pozzovivo. Best comments made RE Froome have been made by Peter Flax on cyclingtips, suggest seeking that out. Cycling is in no better place now as it was 10 years ago. Blood bags are still happening (you can tell from the performance transformations across one day or one rest day of a grand tour) and you are being told that the TUE system is robust by the very same people who abuse it to gain an advantage, legal or not that's doping. As for testing, sure there's positives here and there but you only need to look at Sochi and Russia to see how well that went. Furthermore, the whole purpose of team doctors is to make sure the riders dont test positive, the links of some of the Quickstep doctors makes for ugly reading but surely it wouldn't have anything to do with the season they've had? People are asking questions, but not frequently enough. Cycling journalists are afraid of losing access to riders and teams by asking the 'wrong' questions. I gave up on believing in clean cycling and clean sport in general some time ago. The evidence against Sky, BC and Froome is circumstantial, its true, but its also so staggeringly ugly and multilayered and people are still refusing to see it. Clean sport is a myth and a fairytale and I believe its doing more harm by telling children they can achieve these kinds of power numbers and body fat percentages just by training 6 hours a day and starving yourself. Accept it, most sportsmen and women cheat, they'd be mad not to. Athletes are no more dishonest than the rest of us but the rewards are too great, we should empathise.

Team Sky comment was spot on - NO other team prepares & executes as well as do on Grand Tours. Even if they stumble on a stage, they will come roaring back and they did. They had so many people scattered on the big climbs to help keep riders fueled up - Never saw Yates eating or drinking on his extended climbs vs Froome who was continually fueling (nutrition - wise guys) up. What happened to Innocent until proven guilty?......... Every big name who thought they were getting away with doping was caught & paid a very heavy price........even Lance - it just took longer than it probably should have. If Froome is found guilty, he will pay too. Until then I'll enjoy the riding. Too bad a Fan - Stage 20 on 2nd climb?.....decided to spit at Froome (it was on video) & his teammate (only one at the time) guess he already made up his mind. Giro was only of the toughest races I've ever seen. Maybe so tough it limited the head to head competition.......think what could have been if Yates & Pinot had not cracked.
