What the Giants see in Andru Phillips

Nick Falato goes through the All-22 tape of Kentucky CB Andru Phillips. The Giants' third-round pick is a tough feisty CB who will likely compete for the starting nickel position in camp.
His natural movement skills and fluidity allow him to posses a high ceiling, but he's not yet a polished player.

Thought I had a read on him. All PBUs are with the right hand, even when it meant running past the receiver at the catch point. But I did find 1 or 2 with left hand.

Excellent film work. Feel a little better about this selection. Very balanced assessment. Notwithstanding FA signings, would have preferred Christian Haynes at third slot. I'm assuming Giants brass knows better, and with some development, Phillips appears to be solid addition to Giants secondary.

I sort of understand why the Giants passed on O-Line in the draft even if I may not necessarily agree with it. They brought in a bunch of bodies in FA, and they've invested so much capital into the O-Line in previous drafts to almost no avail. May just be better to see if Carmen Bricillo is an O-Line whisperer and can coax something out of what we have, and try and build some continuity before we invest even more assets.
@bigbluebanter1108
@bigbluebanter1108 23 дня назад
Clerns nails this...the moves they previously made in FA positioned them to not select an OL unless they believed the value was too good. I get it, but you won't hear me complain about an OL selection.

Good study! Question for you Nick, you mention the term “catch point” a few times. Is that the point in time when both WR & CB know the ball is coming? Also how does one improve at that?
@bigbluebanter1108
@bigbluebanter1108 22 дня назад
Catch point means the point where the WR contacts the football. There was a struggle with locating and finding the football just prior to the catch point, which disallowed him from swatting or intercepting footballs on several plays.

Joe is very smart guy he knows what he’s doing when it comes to building a team he had some mistakes but nothing that really costly like Dave
@wrongsnowboard4356

Joe is very savvy businessman. But he’s clueless as a roster builder. It is always sinful to go 5 rounds with even ONE Offensive Linemen. For the GIANTS of all teams to be clowning around with these luxury perimeter players, it’s just embarrassing.

Semper Fi, Nicky. Yeah, I would have preferred someone like Cooper Beebe @ 70. But, Schoen is REALLY into positional value(complete opposite of Getty). And you can never have too many cornerbacks. They were banking on the traits, and I'm sure that Jerome Henderson can work with him. And we are a little bit iffy at that position. So, I'll trust in Schoen.

I'm rooting for this kid but he has me nervous. Crazy athlete and super twitchy. He was way better in zone so fits the system. I feel like his profile fits better in the slot and he plays the screens well but the tackling seems like a huge concern.

At this point, color me skeptical. Drafting on potential rarely works, and the opportunity cost is too high in early rounds.

Dudes a great athlete and I love that he plays like he knows it. The potential is definitely there...but wow he needs serious work. The play-speed especially, idk its like hes constantly relying on his athleticism to make up for mental lapses. If he cant get comfortable reading and reacting on time and at the right pace, he's burnt toast. Schoen just cant seem to get enough of these raw quick-twitch flex CBs lol

He has better be really good, as we passed up on multiple of the top graded guards, which is also a big need if not bigger. That was including the top 2 at that position at this point, featuring Beebee a personal favorite. Not to forget there was also 3 higher graded CBS, one much higher, still on the board. So this dude has better have something super special everyone else wasn’t seeing. Because I haven’t seen anything that makes him worth this pick over the many other players rated higher at that point. But heck Coleman was available when we grabbed another player later rounds, that was also seen as a reach. NYGs should have grabbed a guard, there was multiple chances for them to grab a guard at a steel.

This reminds me of that craze that went on where woman/girls would have Giant moustache’s as eyebrows. Some times they’d just paint giant moustache eyebrows on. It was strange times when ladies thought it was hot to look like cavemen or clowns. Now on to Giants. I’m bored of this can’t we get the season started already? At least the Rangers and Knicks are doing it for New York (never thought I’d say that over the “We’re once” Giants and the Dam Yankees)

It’s a humiliation that the GIANTS, of all teams, chose a round 3 corner over a day 1 starting Offensive Linemen. Of all teams, the Giants are the only one to not spend a single pick on the LOS. 7 months from now we will be back to blaming the QB & the coaching & whoever else for the trench weakness of the Giants. It’s just clockwork. Daniel Jones & Darius Slayton & Daniel Bellinger & company will be certifiable studs when they are freed from NYG’s OLine hellhole.
@omega2648
@omega2648 23 дня назад
They have 4 offensive linemen that were drafted round 3 or higher, signed 4 more including two starters, and signed 2 blocking Tight ends. Idk why anyone is still crying about the O-Line.
@wrongsnowboard4356
@wrongsnowboard4356 23 дня назад
@@omega2648 we’re still “crying” about the Offensive Line because last season we had the worst graded pass-blocking OL in the history of the NFL. Following several consecutive years of bottom 5 or WORSE OL production. And all they did to address it was allocate like 20m ATC on a few journeymen. And let your best starting Guard walk in free agency for chump change! Thru two offseasons with OL as by FAR your biggest need, you brought in just JMS, Runyan, and Eluemenor. THATS IT. Teams without the historically unprecedented OL problems are taking multiple OLmen every draft. We are not “crying”. We are wondering WTF is going on in the Giants Front Office.

You had a day 1 starting Offensive Linemen available to you with that pick. You are the New York Giants, the single NFL team who has most difficulty finding starting Offensive Linemen. You took a slot corner… This guy Phillips could be Jesus Christ reincarnated, it’s still a humiliatingly bad pick. A glimpse into the Giants FO’s ass-backwards roster building mindset.
@NYgiants732
@NYgiants732 23 дня назад
@@wrongsnowboard4356yeah cause we are so good at drafting and developing linemen. We have the most draft capital spent on the oline in the nfl. You need to figure it out and let our guys develop, we also signed so many linemen in fa.
