An extremely helpful and well-articulated clarification about "straight" fit. Thanks for that. Because as you note the nomenclature is all over the place, I look immediately at the hem number. Anything under 9" is decidedly slim. I too prefer not to be constricted in the hips and thighs. It's the line from the hip on the side profile (perhaps even less than the rise number as such) that really helps determine the look too---and that's where your IG photos help make this clear too. It's disappointing to me that so many wonderful heritage brands don't really have a straight (enough) fit, which has always been my preference. Thanks again, very well done indeed.
Thanks! Really appreciate it. I agree. One of the biggest issues is that most "heritage" brands don't actually offer a real straight fit. At best, most are slim straight. It's rare to fins 5 pocket jeans in a true straight fit

I recently picked up a pair of Warehouse S1001XX which has that slight taper below the knee in repro 40s Levi’s fashion. My question for you is how closely do these 40s “repros” actually come to matching the original dimensions/pattern of the 40s Levi’s. I see lots of comparisons online, but they are always against the LVC versions, and I don’t trust Levi’s to be able to repro their own garments, so I’ve always been curious how close the “repro” denim is to being an actual repro… I know the “repro” brands take significant liberties on type 1 jackets-particularly the lengths-and I’m curious how they actually are on the cut of actual 40s Levi’s.
Thanks so much! That's a fantastic question, but sadly it's difficult for me to judge. I haven't been able to handle vintage originals to the degree that I can judge that perfectly. I would say most Japanese brands do have a lower rise and a bit more taper. It also depends on the exact year and other factors as well. You could ask vintage dealers or go on Superfuture and ask them, just don't mention that I sent you- They may not be as willing to help if you do!
Great video man! I love high rise pants so much! Although it's really hard for me to find any that hit my naval because I'm 5"11 with a "balanced" torso to leg ratio. Either way, I'll definitely check the brands you talked about
Yeah that would definitely be difficult for you. There are some decent custom makers who wouldn't be too radically expensive, but otherwise there are sadly few truly high rise 5 pocket jeans.
Just wearing high rise relaxed jeans from here on out and let the hater’s hate. I have to go up to a 36 in 501’s for a good fit on the seat and upper leg but without a belt they are incredibly loose at the waist. A 34” in relaxed straight leg is comfortable and good enough in the waist. At the navel I’m 32 but thanks to my big hips, seat and legs is closer to a regular fit 36” high rise . Genetics are a crapshoot short skinny at 125lbs but big bones from the waist down 🤷🤷🤷.
I said it before I'll say it again...jeans are the hardest garment to find, for even a decent looking fit it's really really hard, especially if you know how things should fit you. Nice video though
Very true! I agree completely. One of the best denim makers even said that jeans are inherently ill fitting. I'm not sure if I agree or not, but either way it goes to show just how difficult it is to get a good fit with jeans.
Hi! Love the video - I’ve also been getting more and more into repro straight fits from Japan and have gotten a couple higher-rise pairs recently. This may be a silly question - where exactly should the crotch be sitting when I am wearing a high-rise pair? I’m frankly never too sure if I am wearing them too high or too low, and I know they could either be sitting at my belly button, above, or below based on my build so I’ve been trying to estimate with where the crotch sits. Should it be right snug up to my family jewels or should there be a decent amount of hang away from them? Thanks!
I think their should be a decent amount of room, but depending on your build, that may be difficult to achieve. I feel like it's easier to get more room in other trousers. Still, definitely don't want anything too snug.
@@almostvintagestyle 13s is pretty high rise jeans, 47mwz is mid rise, also 36mwz too 13mwz is not so expensive, I recommend to try it, maybe size up for bit loose fit )
As another Big Thigh Gigh, something about their fit means that if you have bigger thighs and seat they fit more like a higher mid rise. Suits me just fine, but if you're looking for true high rise they sit a little low.
Interesting thanks. I tend to buy Edwin 55 but to get them to fit on the hips and avoid a saggy ass I have to have a tight waist and It results in a blown crutch within 6 months of wearing. I probably need a high rise.
it is slim tapered. you can clearly see the taper, whether worn on-body or laid flat. it's also reflected by the measurement numbers, leg opening vs thigh etc.

They're out there, use the sizing charts if you're buying online. Even Polo makes true straight fit denim in Polo and the more expensive RRL Selvage variants. Their straight fit is identified as anything labeled "Vintage Classic Straight Fit." High rise, a VERY open top block, and basically no taper even below the knee. The deep indigo pair I have was bought at a department store at the local mall. 🙂
