So what actually happened in that operating room and what caused the paralysis? Tune in to hear what the surgeon told us happened during surgery, what actually happened, how we found out and the emotional rollercoaster of it all.

You have a great attitude. He 100% knows he paralyzed you. I hope you were compensated accordingly on the lawsuit.

I have not consulted an attorney yet. Still wondering if it is worth it. Is there even a case. I don't want to drag a surgeon into this if it is not his fault.

In the discovery it was said that when the doctor was putting in the screw, he was having difficulty so he used the scope. After that the alarms went off and your sensory in that area went to zero. Of course he knows he made a big mistake. He didn’t want to admit because that is his livelihood and his first black mark on his record, not to mention having to admit that he paralyzed you. I am so sorry you had to go through all of this. You have a great attitude. God Bless.

Hi I too have paralysis after a surgery. I was starting to have mobility problems and loss of feeling in my legs before surgery but came out paralyzed. The surgeon had said it was a herniated disc putting pressure on the spine. What they found was a calcified disc and piece if that had punctured the spine. I am curious how soon did you get into legal action against your surgeon. I am just over 6 months out of the surgery and have not wanted to deal with the negativity of a lawsuit instead focusing my energy. thanks for sharing I haven't seen too many stories of people getting an SCI from a surgery as I have.

I entered the legal process almost immediately as I entered surgery 100% fine and came out paralyzed. The legal process took 5 years. I am so sorry to hear about your situation. How is the recovery going? Are you making any progress or regaining any mobility? Good luck with everything in the future!!

six.eight.eleven by: Kylie Schalz I was far from fine entering surgery as I would estimate I had only less then 5% strength in my left leg and lost most of my feeling in the right before surgery. I had multiple opinions and they all said I needed it. My doctor said that paralysis was a 1% chance before the surgery. After he said having the piece of bone penetrating the spine as it did was less then a 1% chance and he had never seen it. Everybody says I should sue but I don't believe it was a mistake on his part but will never know for sure and don't know how to find out. Recovery is going good I struggle with adapting and live in fear of bowel and bladder problems, pressure sores, and UTI's. Your blog fear resonated with me too. I have been blogging on tumblr through the whole process everyday since I entered rehab. I have returned to work with a very supportive employer so that is really nice. thanks for the reply and I look forward to catching up on your blogs.

The good thing about the lawsuit is you find out the truth. It may not be what you wanted to hear, but at least you know. The lawyers handle all the work. It will not interfere with your recovery.

Thank you for your openness with your story. I'm dealing with a possibly simular story and am unsure on what to do. A couple of years ago i had my 2nd c-spine fusion. Aboutt 6 months after i started having leg spasms which have been progressively been getting worse. They have reached such a bad level that my walking has got worse and we had another surgery to put in a baxlofen pump. It puts medicine into my spinal canal to help with my spasms. I didn't make a co conection until my neurologist said that my surgeon may have nicked my cord and caused this problem. He later also said that my cyst in my thorasic spine may also have been the cause. Still i a questioning state as to weather or not to seak legal advice on this. What do you and your people think? Thanks again for sharing. It helps.

I saw your other blog and was wondering how this could happen. My sister had the same surgery and thank goodness did okay. The medical field can be a big hiding game. It is a business, like any other, unsatisfactory outcomes tant the business, hence the lies. I have worked in this field my whole life and has taught me to be very educated and question anything that does not make sense. Beside what they think, they are not god, doctors make mistakes too. Maybe he came to see you everyday out of guilt, they know when a mistake happens, he will live with this the rest of his life as well. Not as much the mistake as the lie.

I really wish you saw my Neurosurgeon at Mayo Clinic/Florida in 2011. He is one of the top best Neurosurgeons in the United States. He has done four major surgeries for me.

I saw the Neurosurgeon in Miami for my follow ups. Also one of the best.

By the way, my family and I know the frustration and mixed emotions. There have been a multiple times in my life where I was extremely close to death because of doctors' mistakes. You have the right attitude my friend.

Somehow people expect perfection from medical personnel. Pure perfection. Think of your occupation and NEVER making a mistake. Or that the mistake could affect a life. What happened to her was extremely sad. From her discussions the surgeon was very experienced too. Doctors are people. Pilots are people. None of us are error proof.

He drilled through your spinal cord; documented? Geez, Kylie...we must forgive, pick-up and move on. Money won't fill you with happiness but ridding yourself of all the emotional distress; giving it all to God will. I encourage you to keep a journal of events as your story can bring so many to the Lord. It hurts to hear of all the bad but it's a special person who sees all the goodness from a life-altering experience as you have done!

Money will help with care and equipment. Love to see you Billbayh just forgive and pick up. You must have lots of money, how is she going to earn a decent living and pay for carers and equipment. What a totally insensitive comment.

He clearly lied. He would of know what happened as he was opperating, he used a probe within close proximity of her spinal cord. The CT scan would of also showed the injury and they didn't disclose those findings

That is why doctors carry insurance. She was hurt during a surgery thru no fault of her own if they can prove it was because of malpractice then all the healthcare costs associated with it are covered. Accidents happen but trying to cover them up doesn't help anyone learn from the accident. Humans are humans and everyone knows humans will make mistakes again that's why doctors carry insurance.

Rachel Desselle there is a good TED talk about this by a doctor www.ted.com/talks/brian_goldman_doctors_make_mistakes_can_we_talk_about_that Doctors have medical insurance because we are all human and can all make mistakes and medical professionals need to have the space to be allowed to admit their mistakes.
