Celiac disease isn't a gastrointestinal disease, it's an autoimmune disease with gastrointestinal manifestations.

it is definitely autoimmune. I have celiac and my immune system is wrecked. from October to March I have an almost perpetual cold. and it's a pretty bad cold, complete with coughing up mucus and coughing fits. not fun.

***** If that's correct, then could you please explain why I spend about 3 days on the toilet after eating a pizza slice? Seriously if it was fake, I wouldn't be doing so much effort to avoid gluten. If it's not gluten then there must be something else in non-gluten-free food that fucks up my life.

numbreason The study suggests that it may be psychosomatic, that it, because your mind thinks gluten is bad, your body acts like it is bad. However, ths is just a suggestion, and they are still very unclear what is happening in non-celiac's who have gluten sensitivity.

Hi S&I Productions. I wonder what people with Celiac disease with autoimmune disorder do 200 yrs ago in England? They must have died off as a result of not having gluten free bread???? No, they didn't because the ancient wheat grains did not affect people like Monsanto GMO seeds. You people are stupid to believe in the Monsanto propaganda about Celiac disease with autoimmune disorder. It's the Monsanto GMO seeds that's causing the problem, not the old gluten found in breads from ancient wheat grains. Stupid ignorant people!!!!

@littlegayfairy
@littlegayfairy 5 лет назад
@Crepuscular Night. Why do you appear to care about the commenter? You appear to care is the reason why you responded to my harsh comment? But you don't really care enough to even do your own research about the information in my harsh comment. You just want to reply and defend the commenter to look like most lazy progressives who just want to appear to care, but they don't truly care and not enough to spend the time to even investigate for themselves to find the truth. If you truly cared about the commenter, you would of researched my info and come back to counter my argument and info. Stop pretending to care because it does no one any good.
@littlegayfairy
@littlegayfairy 5 лет назад
@Crepuscular Night. My use of an adversarial tone in my comment was meant to be hyperbolic and to anger ignorant people and purposely done for effect in order for people to be motivated enough to research my statements/facts and reply to my comments. Most Americans are too lazy to doing any research and therefore, they are susceptible to the main stream propaganda. The medical information on gluten sensitivity or Celiac diseases are main stream propaganda which was partially developed by Monsanto in order to sell more Roundup (glyphosate based herbicide). They pass their information onto American Medical Doctors and Physicians to be used as propaganda. In countries that ban GMO & Monsanto related seeds and where Roundup (glyphosate based herbicide) are not used, there are no "genuine" indigenous cases of gluten sensitivity or Celiac disease. The only cases of gluten sensitivity or Celiac diseases in those GMO/Monsanto banned countries are those people who immigrated from GMO/Monsanto seeds using countries. By the way, Hungary is one of the few countries that GMO products like Monsanto seeds & use of Roundup are banned in their constitution. There's an organic bakery named Pipacs Bakery located in Budapest where they make artisan bread from local organic wheat including eincorn, which is an ancient crop. Lots of people who have gluten intolerance or Celiac disease can eat their bread with lots of gluten, but they do not have any gluten side effects related to wheat bread grown from Monsanto GMO seeds and the use of Monsanto Roundup.

@@littlegayfairy All I asked was why are you being needlessly rude and making insults. I wasn't arguing about whether its true or not, but based on your first comment- I suggest you find more than circumstantial evidence to support your argument. You're anger and rudeness is just off-putting, I might've read your third reply otherwise. Bye.

Respectfully, i don't think so at all. It is important to consider that gluten containing grains can be eaten as berries, in salads, soup, risotto and other healthy forms, if you don't have celiac disease, or an allergy or sensitivity. It has not be necessarily a prepakaged product full of additives and sugars. Greetings 🙌🏼

Adam Cramer The most Idiotic statement on youtube award goes to ^ If you know what the words "Genetic" and "modification" mean, you would know there ARE inherent risks involved with ingesting (or even growing) anything that is GM or GE. That is not to say they ARE bad for us, but it's quite another thing to say they ARE NOT. Modifying DNA outside of a lab and particularly at the rate we are doing it currently, whether you believe it or not, CAN NOT be undone. Genetic roulette is the game they (you?) are playing. The truth is the truth, whether we know it, don't know it, or even care to know it. It is as far as I know IMPOSSIBLE to modify the genes of nature at any scale, and not alter the genes of everything that comes into contact with it. Therefor: When we grow GMOs, we are likely altering the DNA of the soil and insects etc.. And when we eat GMO food, we are likely altering our DNA in some aspect. Should we err on the side of caution with GMO's or tell everyone their assholes for caring enough to attempt to keep nature natural? The first option does not reap large paychecks for the big biotech companies at our expense in many ways, while the latter only helps them get richer. So, Who are you pandering for, us (the people) or them? Personally, I always assume upfront someone whom would make such a statement either - A; works for one of the biotech companies (which makes you part of a special interest group, and your opinion null and void), or B; completely ignorant to the topic at hand (in which case, as the saying goes, it is better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool, than to open it up and remove all doubt. Thank you. Have a wonderful day!

I don't think I have gluten intolerance, but I always feel lazy and sluggish after eating gluten, and so does everyone I know aswell. For example if I see a person eat a lot of bread or pasta, they often get mood swings, bloating, lazyness and headaches later. You may not feel it if you don't have any contrast since you've eating it for majority of your life, but I'd recommend everyone to have an open mind and experiment a week without it. Eat amaranth, non-contaminated oats, kvinoa or buckwheat. Those gluten free grains are also healthier than wheat nutritionally. I don't think gluten is bad for everyone but I think western diets have too much of it. Wheat, barley and rye don't have any vital nutrients that you can't get from other HEALTHIER sources.

Scientists believe that 20-80%(different opinions) are gluten sensitive without any symptoms. Also most people feel the difference after eliminating it. Wheat has many complex and hard proteins for our body to digest, that's why it's creates problems in our bodies and is highly allergenic for many people. It's been manipulated multiple times so it's not even a natural plant anymore, more like man made. Anyway I'm not part of the gluten free diet fad hype. The wheat belly book and other people claiming it's the reason for every disease is bullshit in my opinion. And definitely not placebo, I'm seeing dramatic increase in energy, mood and no headaches or bloating. Again, have an open mind, don't believe me if you don't want to, just research and experiment for yourself.
@RainWhitehart
@RainWhitehart 10 лет назад
that's more likely the bread and pasta and not the gluten. I eat gluten free at home because of my wife's allergy but I feel hella gross after i eat a big bowl of GF pasta just the same as with normal pasta but i feel nice after a bowl or brown rice and grilled veggies. Basicly you can't get healthier just by buying more expensive versions of the same foods, you actually have to change the things that you eat , more veg and lean meat less dairy and bread stuff.
@100percentShitTalker
@100percentShitTalker 10 лет назад
TARDIScrash I didn't recommend buying gluten free versions, I recommended some healthy alternatives but less known natural ancient grains like amaranth, which has 3 times more fibre and 5 times more iron than wheat, and 2 times more calcium than milk! I think everyone knows that gluten free breads from the stores are unhealthy.. By the way if there's one thing that creates a host of disease, including cancer, heart disease etc. it's DAIRY. It's not safe for human consumption in any way or form. Watch forks over knives, so you get to the right path of healthy diet, then research.

I have Celiac and I was diagnosed at about two. Before that I really struggled with keeping/gaining weight. So I was diagnosed with Celiac. For probably about five to six years after that, my diet consisted of fruit, vegetables, and meat. That's basically all I ate as nothing was gluten free. My family (we're all intolerant) is extremely grateful for the amount of food we can now get from chain stores, though it is pretty expensive. Anyway, thanks to AsapScience for showing people that gluten free diets aren't just fads or diets people take on for attention. I've met many people who say they're gluten free but then go on to blatantly eat bread right in front of me. For example, this one girl spent so long trying to get a special gluten free lunch to literally moments later take a bread stick. So.... Anyway, if you read all of this, thanks and have a great week. :)

Nobody needs grains, even whole grains. Those vitamins and minerals people use as an excuse to eat grains can be found in exponentially greater quantity in vegetables,fruits,meat,nuts, and healthy fats. Specifically leafy green vegetables, or vegetables in general. Since I went on a paleo diet, I've felt amazing, my athletic performance in cross country and track is at it's peek. Grains have minimal nutrition coming with the cost of unneeded carb loads. Do your research people. If you feel like donuts and whole wheat bread make you happy, then keep eating them. But if you think grains make you healthy, you might want to rethink what you know about nutrition.

Are you a registered dietitian? If not, you might want to get credentialed before you start giving out nutrition advice. Same way I wouldn't take advice about my teeth from someone who isn't a licensed dentist, or wouldn't take tax advice from someone who wasn't a CPA. People have to go to the expert for any topic-- and random commenters from RU-vid are not experts in nutrition -- RDs are.
@TriiiShot
@TriiiShot 10 лет назад
mle011 you know what dietitians do? They cheat there patients by telling them to go buy some pill that they say will be the cure to all there problems. But all these antibiotics and medications dietitians prescribe to people only treat peoples symptoms, not the base cause of their illness. If someone is trying to lose weight and they go to a dietitian, all the dietitian will tell them is to eat based on the government food pyramid. 300 grams of carbs a day, 50g of protein?! That will just put the already overweight person on the road to sickness and obesity. And then to add insult to injury, they tell the patients to get all these carbs from "whole grains". Which will only wreck havoc on that persons digestive system and whole body from the pounding it gets from their insulin being topped off all day everyday from all those carbs. These dietitians aren't here to help people, they're here to make money. They don't help cure or prevent your illness, they only temporarily get rid of the symptoms so that you keep coming back to spend your money on more meds and appointments. You don't need to be a dietitian to be knowledgeable in nutrition, you just have to do your research from credible sources not funded by the government and trying to take your money.
@TriiiShot
@TriiiShot 10 лет назад
Jim Thomas i'm not saying anything is wrong with carb-loading AND I didn't say everybody has to go run cross country. If you're gonna carb load, do it right. With whole plant based carbs like sweet potatoes, fruit, some natural sweeteners such as raw honey or maple syrup. Not shove bowls of spaghetti and bread down your throat. And the thing about the donuts. I am not encouraging the consumption of donuts, i am saying that you decide to ignore your health for gluttony and pleasure, then you're gonna eventually end up on the wrong said of the obesity statistic in whatever country you live in. Also, of course treat yourself here and there, nobody's diet is perfect, but i'm just giving advice to make the right choice most of the time. Even i'm not perfect, I had ice cream a couple days ago.
@mle011
@mle011 10 лет назад
Moumen Khalifa You're hilarious. I'm not sure if you have done your research on what a dietitian actually is. Dietitians do not "prescribe" pills-- Doctors prescribe medicine/drugs. Dentist prescribe medicine/drugs. RDs do not prescribe these antibiotics and pills -- not in the USA -- it is outside of their scope of practice, so do your research on what an RD does and what their scope of practice is. Just because I've flown IN a plane before doesn't mean I am qualified or knowledgeable enough to BE an airline pilot, just like someone (aka; you) who has eaten food before, and done a few dot-com google searches on "healthy foods" doesn't mean that they are qualified or knowledgeable enough to be an RD. RDs are not out to "get money" and the GOVERNMENT of all sources is not trying to tell people false nutrition/health information --- no government is trying to do that. Countries actually benefit GREATLY when its people are in optimal health. The whole goal of the government (as far as health/nutrition goes) is to get its people as healthy as possible so they can be a productive citizen and not a drain on disability, healthcare, and the workforce. Any government wants their citizens to be as healthy as possible, so they are obviously not out to make us all sick on purpose so they can "take our money" or whatever. I'm sorry you seem bitter about the whole situation. It's obvious you are passionate about food - if you are so passionate about food I'd recommend that you actually get a 4 year degree, complete 1200 hours of an unpaid dietetic internship, get a 2 years master's degree in nutrition science, and then take the national registration examination for nutrition. You'd probably like all the studying and then you could be an RD and change the bad rep that you think RDs have.

Actually, gluten is not made up of essential amino acids. Therefore, a certain enzyme (special molecule) converts the non-essential amino acid (contained in gluten), to an essential amino acid, so then it can be used for protein. People with Celiac Disease do not have the certain enzyme to convert gluten into an essential amino acid.

Okay, Gluten sensetivities definitley exsist. Both my parents are gluten-intolerant. Before "gluten-free" was a fad, my dad kept having horrible stomachaches after eating certain things so he experimented cutting different things out until he figured out cutting wheat out stopped his aching. Going gluten-free helped him lose a lot of weight, and increased his energy. So no, he's not celiac, he actually has a sensitivity. As for my mom, she had really bad arthritis in her knees and shoulders. It would take her 5 minutes to walk down our stairs. She went to the doctors and they diagnosed her with Lupus, an inflammation disease. After she cut out gluten, she went and got a second blood test and the doctors said if these were her first blood tests, they would have never diagnosed her with it. So there you have it, it's not a placebo, it's not non-exsistant, for some people, gluten really does cause a problem for their health. Please stop being so insensetive and skeptical when people like me have first hand experience with it. (side note: I went gluten free for 2 and a half years, I didn't notice a difference so I eat normally now)

This video actually missed a very important point. Gluten consumption increases intestine permeability, and widens the tight junctions wheter you have celiac disease, gluten sensitivity, or even digest gluten well. This does not cause any digestion problem but makes you more likely to catch various diseases and to aborb other molecules into your blood, and can potentially trigger auto-immune diseases. Which is why everybody should at least limit their gluten consumption, to avoid excessive intestinal permeability. And this is actually the key problem with gluten. If your tight junctions stay tight, gluten or other proteins can't go into your blood, and you avoid potential immune reactions, and keep your immune system strong. The caseine of dairy products presents the same problem.
@Barjozz
@Barjozz 10 лет назад
iamihop well I'm french, and the book has no translation so... It is called "Gluten, comment le blé moderne nous intoxique". It has more than 400 reference studies, I can't give you all of them. Just google search intestinal permeability, gluten as key words and you will find evidence.
@Barjozz
@Barjozz 10 лет назад
Barjozz the mecanism is well-known today. Other foods actually cause intestinal permeability in slighter way such as tomatoes or Cayenne pepper. What's important is not to suppress totally those foods but simply moderate consumption to maintain a strong immune system. A lot of diseases can start with leaky guts.
@Barjozz

iamihop Oh well, I actually found some just by typing "gliadin intestine permeability" as keywords. Looking at this video's comments section actually makes me sympathize with those who disable their video's comments sections. All the crazies and their bloated, egotistical "zomgurwrongandherzwhy" rants and buzzword-esque catchphrases have flooded this video's comments section, drowning out the more reasonable comments that range from honest-to-goodness celiac disease suffers venting about their condition (And the non-sufferers who sympathize with them) to those who have found the video genuinely useful and informative. And before you spaz out, I firmly believe that it takes crazy to know crazy.

The video is about gluten, not your condition and shouldn't you celiacs be the most educated on your diet, it is all about what you eat after all. You come on here "ranting" about how others express themselves with "catchphrases" and you completely throw the reader off with words like "zomgur-yada yada", I still don't know what that means or care. No one cares about your gluten allergies, I've got Asthma but I'm not "ranting" on a You Tube comment section to strangers about it because I'm not some "crazy". You are also incorrect about "crazy", not knowing they're crazy is what makes them crazy, you may want to self reflect on that point, delusion is a huge part of not being part of the status quo...ijs

I'm a celiac, and honestly I'm rather glad because the amount of opportunities I've been offered to eat unhealthy glutenous foods (such as cake at social events or coffee shops) is countless, and I'm pretty sure if I did include gluten in my diet I would be a lot heavier and unhealthier than I am now. There are a lot more options available for celiacs such as myself as time as progressed which I am grateful for, but as a celiac that lives around non-celiacs, my diet is a lot more healthier. I can't just pop down to the bakery and buy whatever I feel like, and more often that not cafes, coffee shops, restaurants etc don't have the gluten free option, and it they DO, its usually just simply an omelette or jacket potato which is healthier than most of the other options. Also when diagnosed as celiac, iron deficiency usually comes as very likely, which mean I must take iron supplements and include a lot more iron in my diet (as found in broccoli, raisins, red meat, spinach etc) which is a lot healthier. TL;DR I disagree that on average being a celiac is unhealthier than not.

Gluten makes me feel tired for some reason. If I eat food that is high on gluten, like pizza or a sandwich, then I feel extremely tired, weak and lethargic afterwards. I struggled with this kind of tiredness all through high school, without realizing that I was primarily effected after meals. My aunt suggested I try gluten free and it actually helped a great deal, I have more energy. Sometimes I cheat and I'll have some pizza and then I usually regret it because I will feel like I've been tranquilized, very tired and lethargic.

It's possible that you have Celiac. I had undiagnosed Celiac for the past 4-6 years (we don't know exactly), and I never got any gastrointestinal symptoms (Diarrhea, Bloating, etc.), but I was always tired. Before that, I was in shape, and had great stamina, but then it started and I could barely go on 10 minute walks through the woods near my house without being completely burnt out! So, just saying, it's definitely possible.

In 1961 the Chorleywood bread process was developed, which used the intense mechanical working of dough to dramatically reduce the fermentation period WHICH MEANS MORE GLUTEN and the time taken to produce a loaf. The process, whose high-energy mixing allows for the use of lower protein grain, is now widely used around the world in large factories. As a result, bread can be produced very quickly and at low costs to the manufacturer and the consumer.

Just like Rose Grace said, the increase is more likely linked with better testing and more knowledge of the disease. I have at least 5 family members with celiac disease. The stereo type behind gluten is bad stemmed from the fact gluten is usually associated to fatty sugary and processed foods that are being blamed for obesity, heart disease, cancer and other illnesses. For example gluten is found in white bread, pasta, sugary cereal, muffins, bagels, cookies, cakes, gravies, croutons, batter-fried foods, noodles, ice cream cones, pancake mixes, pies, doughnuts, spaghetti, waffles and pastries, When people go gluten free they've making a misguided attempt to live a healthy lifestyle. 1. Gluten isn't a carbohydrate; it's a protein. (Well, a combination of two proteins. Watch the video.) 2. Yes, they did eat carbohydrates. If they "didn't eat any carbs at all," they wouldn't have survived long enough to reproduce. Human bodies need some carbohydrates, just like they need protein, fat, and various vitamins and minerals. Early humans were hunter-gatherers (who, contrary to what cartoons may show, mostly didn't live in caves). They got carbohydrates from gathered fruits, vegetables, and nuts. Even meat can have some carbohydrates, particularly organ meats. (And babies, both modern and Stone Age, get carbohydrates from their mothers' breast milk.)

rayamat01 Grain doesn't get its gluten from "processing," it comes with it naturally. And while it's true that consumption of grain only started relatively recently in our evolutionary history, it's not too recent for us to have adapted: the fact that humans produce far more starch-digesting amylase than our relatives suggests that grains have been an important part of our diets for a while. Look, we're hardly grain-eating machines, but I can't stand it when people malign modern behaviors because they weren't practiced by our ancestors some 100,000 years ago when we were still scavenging shellfish and munching on roots.

Shiraz Harel insulin is a protein that allow your cells to process the sugars (glucose, fructose etc.) in food, allowing them basically to eat and get energy, diabetes don't allow you you to produce insulin so that your body processes carbohydrates, so the sugars just stand in your blood stream.

There is a sensitivity to wheat, bread, etc. and thus far most people have assumed the sensitivity was to gluten, but evidence is mounting that there is no such thing as non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Those others are most likely sensitive to the carb fructan which is commonly found alongside gluten, and they've been avoiding the wrong thing. www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2014/05/22/314287321/sensitive-to-gluten-a-carb-in-wheat-may-be-the-real-culprit

Well, that just might be because you're actually mildly gluten intolerant. Or that you just stopped eating unhealthy junk food, which often contains gluten.

Oh, and I suppose a video of evolution is one-sided too. Seriously, when the opposition is absolutely bogus, it's not prudent to give them equal footing. Science doesn't have to have two sides. It's not politics.

TARDIScrash that's just overeating, eating a balanced diet which has complex carbohydrates like bread and pasta is not a problem

The poisons in wheat are not from in the plant, but rather what is applied to the plant just before harvest. Some farms spray plant killer on the crop to get all the plants to die and dry out at the same time. Wheat is not harvested until it’s in its “golden fields” form. By killing all the plants at the same time with roundup, farmers get a higher yield. This is because any green wheat is rejected because it’s useless for most food products. The chemical that is on the wheat and in our food is called glyphosate. It harms the natural balance in your gut and in your body. This is probably why so many people are “gluten sensitive,” but not celiac. They should ban the practice just like Many countries in Europe. Why take such chances?

My sister was a pretty tubby baby, at birth 8lb, 4 ounces, but because of Celiac which was hard to diagnos back then, she lost most of her weight and even today struggles to put on weight. One of our cousins put herself on a gluten free diet because she thought she to would loose weight.

And if this dude is gonna talk about all this stuff and possibly change peoples view on something, have them tell other people, etc. He should at least source his shit so he isn't spreading false information.

I have been gluten free for a couple of weeks. I didn''t decide to go gluten free for the sake of losing weight like many people. Apparently, according to some minor research I've done, there is a link between gluten allergies and eczema, a skin condition that I suffer from. Apparently, both according to things I've read online and people I've met in person, it helps and I am meant to see improvements in two months. I hope it works, as I've been dealing with crappy skin since I was very small.

This is a solid video and all, but I find it comical that you guys were pretty much implying that going gluten-free can actually be a bad thing.. If you have any respect for your body, then you're hitting your micronutrient requirements on a daily basis via fruits/vegetables. When I bake gluten-free things, sometimes I use quinoa and you don't taste the difference at all. It's better for you, and no extra fat/sugar necessary. There is absolutely nothing but health benefits for someone that goes gluten-free. Same things goes for red-meat, but I'm not one to judge. Finding a balance is more important than anything.

It's one thing to see a package of rice donuts that say "gluten free" because its made from rice, but what cracks me up, and I kid you not, is seeing 100% gluten free on things like bacon packages. And I don't mean vegan veggie bacon, no, I mean pork belly bacon. I actually saw that on a package of bacon recently, 100% choice pork belly, 100% gluten free! in big, bold green letters on a bacon package. Um…I hope so, since it's not imitation vegan bacon. And what the hell does that even mean? Did the pig itself have a completely gluten free diet?

Gluten is also found in some additives, so gluten free meat means it's pure meat, not mixed with flour to add weight to it or something similar.

Thats i been eating this substance my whole life, but the problem is is that gluten from modern wheat is what is harder to digest because of the larger genome resulting from hybridization. Spelt is easier to digest for instance more ancient grains are better for you than anything modern...
