There's some things you may have missed because you're a stranger to Filipino culture. Nimfa being a cat actually makes a lot of sense to us Filipinos, for example. I can't quite explain this clearly in English but when cats are making noises at night calling for mates, Filipinos would say "naglalandi nanaman yung pusa" which roughly translates to "the cat is being promiscuous again". So Nimfa being a promiscuous cat actually makes sense. The rest of the characters were made animals to complement that, I suppose. It could just be me, but my impression from Inigo being a Siberian Husky is because he's rich and Siberian Huskies are expensive dogs for Filipinos. Roger being what I believe is a bulldog, is likely because bulldogs have a reputation for looking tough and Roger is voiced by Robin Padilla who is known as a tough guy action star. Jerry being a frog made sense to me because frogs are usually considered "ugly" in pop culture and the frog was voiced by comedian Empoy, whose humor heavily relies on admitting his physical appearance to be unattractive.

Honestly the ending is bittersweet. It shows real social issues in the end, Nimfa being a single mother (she didn't marry Jerry, he just became a really good friend and a godfather to her child). She also joined the rally for rights one time, and is just still surviving. It's more realistic than I expected because tragedies like this really happen because of choices you make in your youth because you want some spice in your life. I also love how social issues really are in the background, but it ultimately affects each person's own story anyway. Nimfa isn't just a saleslady just because she has to pay rent. Most of her funds go to her sister in the province because she has to continue schooling.. but the sister got pregnant anyway so she had to stop schooling to provide for the child, much to Nimfa's hardwork for her to get a better future than her. I particular like the joke "Pakinggan mo ako", " ETO PINGGAN MO". I can't exactly translate it into a pun in English, but the words sound the same save for a missing syllable. "Please listen to me" "HERE'S YOUR PLATE".

@adoritowithlegs6468
@adoritowithlegs6468 3 года назад
@@kmpg8037 I agree. I think that can be said about a lot of animated stuff. The animation aspect allows the artists to have more control over the expressiveness of the characters, whether that’s movement, facial expressions, etc. They also have more control over scenery, and just more creative ability in general. This is why I love animated movies so much, and I agree with you 100%.

As a side-note, the studio Rocketsheep first came into the public eye with their mixed-media movie "Saving Sally" that premiered during the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) that uses both live-action elements as well as animated ones. The film took 11 years to make with a small team of animators using shitty computers working on it without pay but was snubbed by a lot of theatres across the country since it didn't come from a major studio. It only premiered in 53 theatres across the Philippines but increased to 65 after a hashtag campaign in Twitter and Facebook. For context, the MMFF may say Metro Manila, but all the movies competing in it are shown in almost every movie theatre in the entire country. "Hayop Ka!" stands as their second film project so it's incredible to see them getting a lot of support. They've gone through so much and the fact that the studio is now getting more and more international recognition is amazing especially after they were basically blacklisted in a lot of local theatres on their first animated feature because of their status as an independent studio.

As a Filipino that natively speaks Tagalog, I can confirm that this 88.7% accurate. Also Hayop Ka is pronounced as well, Hayop Ka, the "ka" isn't really meant to be that strong. Also just to be clear, most Filipino movies are the same, so having stuff such as love triangles, kissing, sex, and other shit, and stuff is somewhat normal in the fillipino film market.

the Philippines is a very "family first" country, my parents are all about spending time together any time we can, so I was very surprised to see that there was a Filipino adult animated film, especially since I've never really seen much animated things in the Philippines :0 and yes the Philippines is very Catholic, I am Catholic myself but man all the religious stuff can be overwhelming sometimes. houses even have mosaics of Mary and Jesus on them! EDIT AS OF 2022: i am no longer catholic so now its feeling even more overwhelmling. and for why he philippines is so catholic, its because of spain's colonization. either you conformed to the religion or the friars were shit to you. and by mosaics, i meant like super tiny ones, like the size of a tile (i think its actually just a tile thats mosaic styled). theyre super small and a lot of them are just built into houses, at least in Batangas.

Not all houses have mosaics tho. What's more common is a painting/sculpture of The Last Supper in the dining room plus an altar in the hallway or bedroom depending on the house. The altar usually has a cross with Jesus nailed to it and INRI on the top, a statue or two of Mary (usually local variants or ones borrowed from Latin America, such as Our Lady of Guadalupe), a few smaller statues and/or pictures of saints (usually the patron saint of the area), a few rosaries, and a sampaguita necklace bought from the local church/parish/cathedral.

Hayop ka is a satire for the mainstream Philippine soap operas. Like, almost every show televised here are about infidelity, rich vs poor, wife vs mistress, etc. I think some filipinos don't like it because the given medium is animation. Adults/ senior citizens treat cartoons as shows for children. The movie for me was beautiful to look at, humorous at some parts, especially the fight / confrontation scenes. But the story is meh, just because the plot is overdone. The creator said that he purposefully made the characters undesirable to a fault because it gives the audience a lasting impression. That they could talk about why they hate the characters or their actions. Also, Nimfa didn't marry the frog. I presume that the frog became a godfather to her son at the credit montage because that was a baptism scene.

"Son of a b****" is a more apt translation.) ETA: Oh, and Nimfa's in-character Facebook page is hilarious. They even animated Nimfa doing TikToks (called TikTik in-universe). i feel like i know why the main three are animals at least. nimfa IS catty and seemingly uncaring. iñigo is a husky, expensive and wanted by many (here in ph at least). roger is a mongrel or askal (street dog), which relates to his job, status, and stuff like that. also, the dog iñigo is kind of with, marie, is a poodle, another breed that suggests class or money. the animals chosen fit the characters well, but why they chose animals in the first place is lost on me.

Why animals? I think it's the principle of contrast. Like, you know how when horrific or shocking imagery is juxtaposed over nursery rhymes to create an unsettling dissonance? I think using cartoonish animal or even abstract designs in something that focuses heavily on characters and humanity sort of amplifies that vibe pretty effectively. That might not have been the thought process behind this particular movie, but I'm convinced it's a pretty impactful factor in stuff like Night in the Woods or Aggressive Retsuko where it's a slice of life sorta thing and the characters are meant to invoke real, relatable, uniquely human experiences.

As a Filipino-American, this movie is an inspiration. It is a decent movie made from the Filipinos, and most likely will land at a C+ or B- rating. Considering the physicality and concept. We are SO conservative, that we have our own TV channel. Seeing this does put things on an international scale. An adult film being a good representative isn't the best thing, but entertaining nonetheless. Reason many Filipinos dislike is because it's not what "they" watch as a movie. However, this movie can help start a movement. The animation is a nice original cartoon style, and the references show that they're trying to be more "English/American." Overall, I hope this inspires more conservative countries to make their own international film. Also Fun Fact: The Philippines had to be involved in fighting 3 countries (Spain/Mexico, America, and Japan), and the only credit they get is a simple nod or line of dialogue.
@Пинагод
@Пинагод 3 года назад
Wait what's wrong with having our own TV channel- And the Philippines have fought way more than that, but the reason why we're only getting a line of mentioning is because we aren't as well-known or well-equipped as other countries, and they're used as a trump card and trump cards are mostly remembered, like America. America has more military weapons and is seen as the better military. I do hope that more would recognize other countries' efforts though.

Honestly here's what I personally think regarding "Hayop Ka" as a Filipino. I'll also give some more insight as much as I can. Feel free to ask questions or add more to what I said if you like ^^. I. ANIMATION Like SaberSpark said, it couldn't be more smooth and gorgeous than it ever is. All backgrounds are eye-catching and beautiful. I also really love how they just include little snippets of memes and references to actual Filipino culture, the problems included. Btw, the credits scene is full of concept art and character art (of which that follow art challenges and MEMES). Everything from the movie is something you just cannot miss, even the credits scene :0. I absolutely love the bonuses and amount of detail the artists and animators put to this whole project. It really just makes me proud as a Filipino and artist myself :'>. II. VOICE ACTING I personally think that the voice acting is really good (I'm speaking for the original Filipino dub). I find the voices really suit all of the characters, though for the rabbit character, I think it's a little off to me for some reason. III. CHARACTERS I personally like the characters a lot. Even the background character's are quite interesting. Their character designs and stylization just seems to say a lot about them. At most I can say that their being animal designs can say a lot about them, but this mostly for the main characters. • Nimfa (+ her fam)- is I think a tabby cat but I think she's a "Puspin" or "Pusang pinoy" meaning a stray cat in the Philippines. Stray cats in the Ph are often large in numbers and you literally see them everywhere. I like how Nimfa and her family are struggling in poverty, and Nimfa's sister is already having a kid. This somehow just really goes well for their chosen animal because again, lots of stray cats often reproduce quickly and are large in numbers. And idk, they somehow represent charm for Nimfa, while also struggling as a stray, like a mother cat trying to take care of her children (a.k.a. family) • Roger- I love Roger's character design so much. He definitely is a "macho" type just by his character design and voice. I do think that he is a stray dog as well. An "Aspin" or "Asong Pinoy" meaning stray dog in the Philippines. Stray dogs are usually domesticated here and they also tend to overpopulate a bit (not as much as cats in my opinion though). Stray dogs are often associated with the poor, since they often have to look for scraps or look towards humans for their survival. Bottomline is that Roger is an Aspin and pretty much represents the dogs or a person who lives in poverty. • Inigo (plus fam)- Inigo is a husky and he represents to be a rich and classy dog. Pretty much huskies are quite a popular dog breed in the Philippines and are considered to be quite expensive and dogs for the rich, so I can see why they chose for Inigo to be a husky. • Jerry- I also like his character design, though I don't know if I can really give insight as to why he's a frog among all other things. I really like how he's really kind and hardworking. He's really the kind of guy who's very likeable. • Rabbit (Nimfa's friend)- I also can't remember her name ^^'. Can't really justify for her chosen animal design either. At most I can say she has a nice character design, but there's not much i can say since rabbits in the Philippines are not much of a common thing. • The radio guy- from what I can remember the guy bull. I somehow think that they represent animals who are very like harsh sometimes or very giddy in a sense. Kind of hard to justify why they're that animal but their character design really suits who they are. Pretty much the main characters have a good reason to be the animals for who they are. I'm thinking the reason why why they made the characters animals is because, asides from how anthro characters are really interesting and can be utilized, the creators wanted to play them off as animals because of the movie title, "Hayop Ka" which means "You animals". Though this is just a guess ^^. Of course what they do is an exaggeration since the film is animated and the animators had fun with the opportunity. Their personalities are like an amplified and animated version of soap operas or love story tv series in the Philippines, not that it's a bad thing. IV. PLOT Honestly for a storyline, it isn't that bad. There are many tv shows here that direct romantic dramas, especially with love triangles or romance in general. Of course, this isn't how all tv series are like. We also have our fair share of action, fantasy, and horror movies/tv series. Though the ending seems to make me think that it's too short of an ending because the movie spends so much time showing the problems and the love triangle drama, while the ending seems to be so quick and have a quick resolution, but I can justify the ending a bit. Pretty much Nimfa is a hopeless romantic and she pretty much is looking for someone who is supportive as a partner and hardworking. During her time with Inigo, Jerry has proven to be very reliable and nicely charismatic. So yes, I find it to be a nice ending for Nimfa. But the reason why I was sort of alright with this ending because it somehow seems pretty real. Now I'll be diving a bit more about poverty in the Philippines but do your own research as well since I'm only one person, plus this is just some insight being a Filipino. About 73% of Filipinos live in poverty, which is sadly a reality many of those individuals have to live. Many of them really have to go through so much just to earn money, so they would often get a blue collar job to earn money. Now idk what a salesperson is labeled but Nimfa is pretty much doing her best to earn money, and she is especially doing this for her younger sister to study. The youth is pretty much relied on and given many sacrifices for their education because they're usually the fam's best opportunity to get out of their situation. (For those who assume Filipinos are unducated, pls don't stereotype us this because we really value education so much; and if you look into our curriculum via the Department of Education or GovPh, you can see that we have just as good an education that includes our own culture. You can make more research about this stereotype yourself, but I figured I'd include this bit in even if it's straying off topic). This stuff is pretty much explained in a harsh and exaggerated way by the radio guy at the end of the scene. Bottomline, Nimfa's living situation isn't the best. Like i said before, romance dramas are pretty common here in the Philippines and the studio did want to try this plot out first before making more animations. Going back again to the poor, a sad thing that is done as well is that some have resulted to looking to rich ppl for their money. While Nimfa isn't exactly looking for money (but genuine love and peepee), she does have some degree of wanting to live the life of a rich person. Though again, this just seems like a subtle reference to how there are actually some who do this. It both upsets me as a Filipino, but I also can't blame them because they're doing what they can to survive. You can't really blame someone for being poor. By the end of the movie, Nimfa finds out she's pregnant with Roger's kid, and breaks up with both dogs. She ends up with Jerry. Yes, the ending was a little off putting though I find that the ending is somehow a little satisfying in a sense. I somehow think it's because I like how Nimfa finds someone who can now support and love her (both romantically and financially), which I think is what really eveyone mostly settles with. Nimfa has always fantasized for a richer life. It so happens she at first went for dogs that only have one out of both things. One had no money but loved Ninfa, while the other had money and seems to have an affair on her too. So it's really just her dating ppl who don't seem to satisfy her. But lo and behold the person she needed was there all along, Jerry. And he was there to support her even if she had a child that wasn't his. An ending that's a little off, but overall okay in a sense to me. V. REPRESENTATION Tbh, I love how the studio included controversial problems in the Philippines. The power struggle of the poor, the indigenous ppl wanting justice for their lands, the abortion debate, teen pregancy, pretty much What SaberSpark mentioned. Of course I'm not saying this is a good thibg, but for them to to raise the concerns and problems we actyally have to deal with is really good because really, animation is one way to spread awareness of these problems. I just wish the studio could give more focus on them. As for those Filipinos who say it's too raunchy and gives bad light to Filipinos. Sure, go ahead with your opinion, but this is an adult animation. What did you expect. Plus many romantic dramas in the Philippines are similar to this. The studio wanted to go for this idea to bring one of our romantic drama soap operas to international viewers. I get that many Filipinos are tired with this kind of genre and love triangle trope directors won't stop going for, but honestly this movie does more than just be a trope because it shows off bits of our culture while also giving light to controversial issues here. This is a step up for our animation industry and it's best that we support it as much as we can. It honestly sucks when there are some people trying to boycut the movie just because they support the "president" (which *ehem* has lots of controversy). Ik the current admin sucks but you can't be that shallow for boycutting this movie. Support your creators and the industry because this is a step up for us Filipinos and this project is a work of art. Really rooting for this studio to do more prokects. Who knows what else they can do if they use stories that many Filipinos and international viewers can love?

Gives light? You mean a few seconds of still images in the credits or the scenes where it shows it in the background for 3 seconds? Feels trivial to me.

Fun fact, Jerry’s VA: Empoy, was in this Filipino movie called Kita Kita (I see you), a live action film and practically plays the same roll, good movie, always recommend this to friends

@@riannlim991 sometimes you have to make sure things can go under the radar or the government stops it from being made, the very fact it's in there too begin with is a testiment to these people willing to try and expose what's going on in their country

Quite a nice review you made here dear, as a researcher myself and one who is interested in politics and culture. You said this movie supports the current President and you also stated in your opinion that the current admin sucks does that imply you experience this first hand? Does the current admin suck more than the previous administrations? Just need more info since the Philippines got into the top 50 safest countries in the recent survey and the majority of its citizens still love the president.

@@cassandranova6541 Survey is rigged. Don't believe it. Just research about extra judicial killings and you'll see how much innocent lives died under Duterte's drug war. Our admin last term was pretty bad but Duterte is just way worse. Also this movie doesn't support Duterte btw, it's one of the voice actors that does. (Roger's voice)

the sequel to the movie begins like this: One fine day with a “woof” and a “purr”, A baby was born and it caused a little stir. No blue buzzard, no three eyed frog, Just a feline canine little CatDog.
