here's something to understand why we filipinos aren't into this film. colonizers invaded our country and burned every semblance of our culture and history, made themselves at home, and put us through 500+ years of pain. because of them, we know little of our original language, forcing us to learn the english alphabet and inserting bits and pieces of their own language for us to use. and that's the least most damning thing they did. now they're trying to glorify those people who started the whole mess, acting as if they're doing us a favor by making this film in the first place. TLDR, this is pocahontas all over again. if any of you want an actually interesting show that features filipino characters and filipino culture, try Trese. it's an anime, and we filipinos love it a lot, give it a try.

as a filipino i have watched many plays that depict this particular part of our history, if i remember correctly. houses before did not have locks because we respected each other's belongings and that woman are treated equally, so when the Spaniards set fire to the houses. if i remember correctly Lapu-lapu said that they were cowards to battle at night when the enemies were sleeping and instead shouldve challenged and fought them at broad day light to show some balls.

Looks atrocious. The Filipino outfits were not researched at all. I guess they figured one precolonial tribe of brown people looked like like any other. Also just because these were the first Europeans the Filipinos saw it doesn't mean that they were the first foreigners to the archipelago. When the Spanish arrived they noticed that the Filipinos had been trading metals, spices, pottery and other valuables from other sea trading empires like China for decades if not centuries before. And lastly Magellan died because he wanted to show off his bravado to a chief and decided to meddle in Filipino politics. His men left him to die as they watched him get massacred by Lapu Lapu's forces from the boat because by that time most of his crew was fed up with him and just wanted to go home.

Magellan's translator was actually Malaccan slave who was rechristened as Enrique. No local girl stepped up and translated Cebuano to Spanish

I like how most of that eras travel stories are like, “I was travelling around the world and I thought I was going the right way... but we got lost... I think? There were natives... we didn’t know what to do about it. So we tried to bully them until they realised they had more people than our voyage crew.”

I was actually surprised when I found out this is about a journey to the Philippines (yeah, I don't know much about Magellan, sorry) because the native characters on the poster look like they're straight out of Road to El Dorado. I mean, most of them don't even look Philippino, they look native American.

You know as a Filipino myself, I saw a poster of this film a year ago in a mall theater that wasn't too big. The week after I saw it again, it was shelved behind a dumpster.

As a Filipino it’s kinda sad how this is the way we’re being portrayed in media (since we don’t get portrayed a lot anyways) this makes me sad

Honestly, some people might say that us Filipinos are being exaggerated to our outrage, but one can't help but be angry when the hero that fought for our country be portrayed this way. Not saying that Filipinos were the only one colonized, but I'm sure many will sympathise if their own heroes come off as a villain. And as a quote that I remember, in different perspectives of the victim and the attacker, you can either be the villain or the hero. (Or maybe they're too evil that even their own countrymen doesn't approve)

Historically accurate version: Magellan lands at Cebu and asks where the windows are. He then hands out toothbrushes and accuses Lapu-Lapu of asking him for money. He is driven out and dies in the West Indies of an unspecified accident involving mayonnaise.

Just dropping my thoughts and criticism as a Filipino over here. The girl was a babaylan. So she's not just a girl that comes out of nowhere in the 3rd act of the film. She's an important character in pre-historic Philippines. Babaylans are the "messenger" to the spirits because in prehistoric Philippines, they believe in nature spirits and deities. So a babaylan sailing to Spain because of a man is very disrespectful on their move. Babaylans are very important to a tribe. Please for anyone who will be doing historic films, do proper research. And also regarding Lapu-Lapu looking like a villain is very bad thing on their part. They invaded our homeland and Lapu-Lapu and the tribe was only trying to protect the Philippines. Before these colonizers came we have our own culture and women were not looked down upon. Now look what they did? They destroyed a country's diverse culture, art and history because of gold and spices and more territory to flex to other countries. Edit: Since this has gone (sort of) got a lot of likes, I hope this can be a conversation starter for people to talk about while being respectful to culture, history, and the communities involved.

Ngl when I first saw the character models the first thing that came to mind was Sea of Thieves with the smooth and cartoony textures. Even the boats and the water looked like it came from Sea of Thieves a little bit. (Obviously Sea of Thieves had better water effects and boat models, but you get what I’m saying if you’ve played the game.)

This movie was made because in 2019 was the celebration of the 500 year of Magalhães trip and i think it should have been mention in the review . An animated film from the Colombus voyage was also made in it's 500year. It was hot garbage.

Magellan forced one of the mutineers to execute two of the others, one of whom was his foster-brother, then had their bodies dismembered and nailed to the rigging of his ships and left them there for months. The whole story is so insanely dark it absolutely defies belief that anyone would think it was suitable material for a kid's movie.

The Spanish colonization basically stipped the Filipinos of their pre-colonial identity. I was researching the history of poetry and drama/musicals in my city in the Visayas region only to find out how most of the pre-colonial documents were burned by the Spanish. We're the only South East Asian country that doesn't use their own alphabet at present because the one we had was eradicated by our colonizers. They literally erased our identity yet have the audacity to paint themselves the heroes.

While Filipino people have already spoken out about the movie better than I ever could, as a Spaniard I want to also make a quick note that Spanish media has had its fair share of problems dealing with our colonial legacy. A movie about the 1898 war between Spain and the US for control of the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Cuba was released a few years ago and got criticized for apparently portraying our country as weak. A lot of times, criticism of Spanish colonization and the Spanish empire is dismissed as a leyenda negra, AKA a lie that the British spread because they wanted to make us look bad while excusing their own colonization. Both empires were shit, but Spain in general still can’t wrap their head around its past, both concerning colonization and events like the civil war and posterior dictatorship.

I swear they absolutely were making lapu lapu the villan by putting him on that poster, but saw the backlash and were trying to sneakily make things better, but they still went and made him one of the attacking natives (who kill one of the main guys, so yeah. I think there’s still a lot of superiority in spain. I went to uni there and one day after class on “el día del hispanidad” (which is when they celebrate their conquest of the new world). A girl came up to me asking if I was latino, and then proceeded to tell me we should be thankful fo them for all the things they’ve given us like culture, religion, technology, and freeing us of our savage ways. Idk if it’s their school system not addressing it or just it embedded culturally but you can see it as well in the way some treat Latinos there.
