Those were actual movies. El Dorado is brilliant, only to be criminally underrated. While Pocahontas is inaccurate, that doesn't mean its not a decent love story with some great songs. here's something to understand why we filipinos aren't into this film. colonizers invaded our country and burned every semblance of our culture and history, made themselves at home, and put us through 500+ years of pain. because of them, we know little of our original language, forcing us to learn the english alphabet and inserting bits and pieces of their own language for us to use. and that's the least most damning thing they did. now they're trying to glorify those people who started the whole mess, acting as if they're doing us a favor by making this film in the first place. TLDR, this is pocahontas all over again. if any of you want an actually interesting show that features filipino characters and filipino culture, try Trese. it's an anime, and we filipinos love it a lot, give it a try.

Looks atrocious. The Filipino outfits were not researched at all. I guess they figured one precolonial tribe of brown people looked like like any other. Also just because these were the first Europeans the Filipinos saw it doesn't mean that they were the first foreigners to the archipelago. When the Spanish arrived they noticed that the Filipinos had been trading metals, spices, pottery and other valuables from other sea trading empires like China for decades if not centuries before. And lastly Magellan died because he wanted to show off his bravado to a chief and decided to meddle in Filipino politics. His men left him to die as they watched him get massacred by Lapu Lapu's forces from the boat because by that time most of his crew was fed up with him and just wanted to go home.

KougaTintinFan Yeah. At least with Road to El Dorado, we weren’t following the story of historical characters (I mean, Cortés is in the movie, but we don’t really get to see any of his ventures, he’s just a story device for our main characters). Miguel and Tulio are completely made up, and it just so happens that the story takes place in colonial times, that’s it. It’s hard to adapt the lives of these colonizers in a kid’s movie because then you have to sacrifice historical accuracy for the sake of censorship, and nobody wants that.

For the record, the Jesuit, Franciscan, and Dominican clergy that accompanied the Conquistadors were VERY vocally upset at the subhuman treatment of natives (there are letters of correspondence between them and the Vatican that go in depth about the matter) but since the church began to back out of politics during the renaissance they couldn't do much since the expeditions were commissioned by the crown. On one hand people could get pissed that the church didn't do more in spite of this, and on the other people would complain about violating the separation of church and state. It's a lose lose situation, but the church saw Evangelism as the more worthwhile pursuit in the long run. They genuinely wanted to spread the faith, not conversion under threat of violence. As such, unlike the conquistadors, the clergy STAYED in the colonies rather than coming back to Spain once they "got their spoils". In fact, that's not only a major factor that led not only to Catholicism being dominant in Hispanic countries, but also contributed to Spanish becoming the dominant language. After all, you can't teach the faith if they don't know what's being said or written. Likewise, there are a ton of Hispanic, Latino, and Mixed-Race Saints from said nations shortly afterwards who were readily canonized regardless of race or ethnic background.

he was a hero that fought for your country as much as spainiards were heroes that fought for europe during the arab invasion or aztecs were heroes that fought for america, maybe even worse. Lapu lapu fought for himself because the spanish demanded he submit to his ally Rajah Humabon, who probably converted to christianism and allied with them precisely for that, he and the battle of mactan are stupdly romanticized. It was all a minor conflict that ultimately didn't change much since spain got most of the archipelago relatively fast anyway. Like even saying "your people" is colonialist since at the time the philiphines was super disunited with dozens of languages and tribes and like 5 main religions, you were maybe even more diverse than the whole of europe. "Your people" is a concept that exists precisely because of the spanish colonization who united the isles, if it weren't for that you would be 12+ diferent countries. Correct me if I'm wrong but you couldn't even agree to wich name the philiphines should be changed because diferent langauges and ethincs had diferent views that were interpreted as racist by the others and just left it, that's how diferent you were a few decades ago after being united for centuries imagine if no colonization happened. If you want a "hero that fought for your country" you should look at the people that fought for the independence against USA, japan and to a lesser point spain(to a lesser point because spain didn't put much of a fight since usa crushed them) not a local tribal cheiftain and warlord who managed to win a minor battle against an european expedition that had like 30 times less people than his army.

Just dropping my thoughts and criticism as a Filipino over here. The girl was a babaylan. So she's not just a girl that comes out of nowhere in the 3rd act of the film. She's an important character in pre-historic Philippines. Babaylans are the "messenger" to the spirits because in prehistoric Philippines, they believe in nature spirits and deities. So a babaylan sailing to Spain because of a man is very disrespectful on their move. Babaylans are very important to a tribe. Please for anyone who will be doing historic films, do proper research. And also regarding Lapu-Lapu looking like a villain is very bad thing on their part. They invaded our homeland and Lapu-Lapu and the tribe was only trying to protect the Philippines. Before these colonizers came we have our own culture and women were not looked down upon. Now look what they did? They destroyed a country's diverse culture, art and history because of gold and spices and more territory to flex to other countries. Edit: Since this has gone (sort of) got a lot of likes, I hope this can be a conversation starter for people to talk about while being respectful to culture, history, and the communities involved.

Show that the life of many people in europe sucked. I mean a lot of people came to the new world looking for a better life, free from oppressive European society. And show us more of the natives and their culture. Give us more indigenous food and religion. Have some situation where the defector is being taught how to do stuff by the natives. @@theprimestskeletron676 a lot of it even before the pocahontas film, comes from the fact that when Europeans landed in native lands (whether that's Africa, LatAm, or the Pacific Islands) saw women who largely wore clothing they considered to be unimaginably revealing (bared breasts were particularly shocking to colonizers) and because of this they assumed it meant that native women were simply morally deficit & extremely promiscuous (instead of using their brains & thinking the climate in these regions is hot and they have no need to cover up) .....this in turn lead to colonizers raping native women en masse and therefore the idea that native women (African, First Nations, LatAm indígnas, and Pacific Islanders) are inherently more sexual has bled into the general narrative. Look at Chel from road to el Dorado.

The Spanish colonization basically stipped the Filipinos of their pre-colonial identity. I was researching the history of poetry and drama/musicals in my city in the Visayas region only to find out how most of the pre-colonial documents were burned by the Spanish. We're the only South East Asian country that doesn't use their own alphabet at present because the one we had was eradicated by our colonizers. They literally erased our identity yet have the audacity to paint themselves the heroes.

It is so easy to blame Spain that they "burn the documents" but really there is nothing to be burned because you have no tradition of recording events. Blame your geography it is islands who has its own language, tribe, clans and identity, hard to have centralized form of government that will maintain and establish culture and philippino identity.

COMMENTS ON THE VIDEO, I, A FILIPINO, WANT YOU TO READ: 1) 0:50 We did have guns, we were literally next to the Country that invented it, We have something called the Lantaka and the Arquebus that was invented by the Majapahit Empire during our 400 year long war with at least 3 dynasties in China 2) 9:37 A Captain of one of his fleet of ships called Juan de Cartagena who was the illegitimate child of an archbishop, thats where he got his position, so you see the smegol look lmao 3) 13:00 Sidenote, the reason why Lapu-Lapu was pissed off by the Spaniards was because they interrupted his wedding. The Rajah on the other Island was already his enemy but shit hits the fan when your tank tries to carry. 4) 13:50 another thing, that girl is most likely the Islands Queen, the Mother of Sinulog herself, Reyna Juana who, not shown in the movie, was Christian and really pro-Spaniard 5) Another thing that isn't seen in the Film is that they incited a fight with Lapu-Lapu by BURNING DOWN THEIR HOUSES, They didn't even land when the battle begun, They shot them with guns that were obviously not snipers again because WE HAD GUNS. Because of Coral reefs they couldn't land properly and using small boats would mean certain death because the natives were already on the beach 6) 14:26 One problem that I have with the East indies arrival scene is that, 6.1 Indies has 6 seasons, 6.2 from March( 16, 1521 when Magellan arrived) to July that would be Summer meaning there shouldn't be any storms in the South Ocean and 6.3 Elcano went the other way when coming back to Spain and his ship was jacked. 7) 21:18 They didn't land directly on Cebu, the first Mass was on a completely different Island. 2 WE HAD GUNS 8) 21:27 They didn't have a blood compact, that happened years later with Miguel Lopez de Legaspi and the leader of the island where I lived, Sikatuna. 9) 29:20 There were Hypercuts made to the movie because the studio actually edited it to be less offensive according to the producers. The amount of hypercuts in the movie just shows how much shit there is. 10) 33:07 Lapu-Lapu's nuts are hanging which is a problem since we wore g-strings, not skirts, Also WE HAD ARMOR, it was bamboo breastplates with a circular Iron piece in the Middle

While Filipino people have already spoken out about the movie better than I ever could, as a Spaniard I want to also make a quick note that Spanish media has had its fair share of problems dealing with our colonial legacy. A movie about the 1898 war between Spain and the US for control of the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Cuba was released a few years ago and got criticized for apparently portraying our country as weak. A lot of times, criticism of Spanish colonization and the Spanish empire is dismissed as a leyenda negra, AKA a lie that the British spread because they wanted to make us look bad while excusing their own colonization. Both empires were shit, but Spain in general still can’t wrap their head around its past, both concerning colonization and events like the civil war and posterior dictatorship.

A girl came up to me asking if I was latino, and then proceeded to tell me we should be thankful fo them for all the things they’ve given us like culture, religion, technology, and freeing us of our savage ways. Idk if it’s their school system not addressing it or just it embedded culturally but you can see it as well in the way some treat Latinos there.

On one hand, you've got blood, death, uprising, betrayal, rinse and repeat, and on the other hand , the contribution of culture and stuff. As a person who lives in a conquered country, hearing the history and bloodshed my ancestors faced is just sad and maddening.
