Just remember when politicians say "this is a threat to our democracy ". Just replace the words our democracy with our power and then you have managed democracy.

What sets this channel apart from so many other Star wars channels is YOU. I'm not a hardcore Star wars fan, and your personality is what keeps me coming back. I don't know where I'm going with this; so I'll just summarize with thank you for the content. It's always been a refreshing change of pace to the day.

To quote Heilein (from _The Moon is a Harsh Mistress_ ): “A managed democracy is a wonderful thing... for the managers... and its greatest strength is a 'free press' when 'free' is defined as 'responsible' and the managers define what is 'irresponsible'.”

The ironic bit of “humanity first” as it relates to HD2, is that both the Terminids and Automatons are Humanity’s making. Seriously, humanity farmed the -tyranids- terminids for the oils they made, and automatons are the evolution of the cyborgs of the first game, and were both communist and basically the adeptus mechanicus.

I gotta say, this channel is really something special, I love when Alan just goes on these long talks talking about political philosophy and governance structures

Thank you Alan. I remember getting into your videos for the Star Wars tech stuff, but now, I love how you've branched out into connecting real-life topics through a digestible format of entertainment media.

I rarely comment on RU-vid, but I thought it was worth it. If you haven't checked it out, take a look a recent show titled 'The Regime' with Kate Winslet (there is humor too in her personality) and she exemplifies leaders typical of the Central European/Eastern Bloc . It's a limited series and is a great example of how dictators fall.

Honestly I already do go to a survey to find which political party I agree with the most, but it's not a personality quiz, rather the questions are about policy issues, and it only tells me which parties I agree with on certain things, basically getting a % of how much I agree with each. From there I can choose from said parties based on nuance. Also it should be very apparent I am not an American since I have multiple parties to vote on. Anyway in my case the survey I am talking about is called "NRKs valgomat" NRK being the initials of the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, a government owed news organization in Norway that used to be publicly funded through fees on cable TV, but due to the "unprecedented" decline of cable TV its funding now comes from the Government and taxes.

Honestly the basic description of MD actually sounds pretty good Instead of fracturing along party lines your asked a series of questions related to what you want in a candidate and then your vote is cast for whoever most closely aligns with your policies Obviously in HD it’s horribly corrupt and I don’t t think it’d ever work in real life. But I think if we had a system like that in real life it would help us immensely

Post 1997 HK was a managed democracy. After 2019, it was like after Yavin, where Palpatine abolished the Imperial Senate altogether. Pre 1997 HK was a benign democratic authoritarian.

Amazing video as always. I love that you are willing to branch out away from Star Wars and talk about something more rooted in present everyday life. It's really refreshing to hear positivity about society on social media especially with so much negativity around. I am not sure about the US, but as a Brit I can see similar problems happening to our government especially atm with all the chaos around. The idea of voters answering questions about their views and desires then a computer matches them to the candidate that most closely reflects those views was the topic of the short story “Franchise” by Isaac Asimov. In the story the computer model used had gotten so sophisticated, and accessed so many other forms of information, that it only needed one voter (selected at random) to decide the election.

In the Netherlands some people already vote like it’s a managed democracy! We fill in the “Kieswijzer” and just vote for the first party that comes up

My Father told me his recount of the day Papua New Guinea received political independence back in the 70s. He was an Australian Soldier and there was a ceremony with parades of Australian Army and PNG forces marching (The usual sort of march on a parade ground stuff). There were speeches from dignitaries and honoured guests and of course a gathering of tribal leaders all in their native ceremonial gear who were seated in front of a stage. This was a ceremony to introduce everyone to the notion of nationhood and PNG has its own sovereignty. The final speech addressed the chiefs, ending with "You now have your independence" to which the tribal chiefs stood up moved forward with some of them holding their hands out waiting to receive something. My Father said many of them thought they would get an object of importance, some totem. They didn't know what the word "Independence" meant in this new political context as they lived their lives freely in their own territories all their lives. The Chiefs would come together and discuss major important issues concerning their people and territories, using their tribal style of diplomacy for thousands of years but now it meant that some elected officials, some who were not from their area or tribes would be making decisions for them. Fred Smith, an Australian diplomat coined the phrase "Bagarap Empire" from the Tok Pisin (Broken english trading language). Bagarap comes from english "Bugger up" and means "to go wrong".

I think the antithesis of what you said may also be true. I feel like a lot of people think something is good without actually knowing why it's good, or they have been told something is better than it really is. A ton of people think capitalism is the best of all systems, without acknowledging how it has destroyed any competing system, only to claim it would never have worked anyway. We also tend to neglect how the USA was built to be an oligarchy ruled by a wealthy minority, except to sneer 'it's not a democracy it's a republic'. The elites do not have to kill their opposition because few question their position as the rich and fabulous. Hardly anyone even notices the oligarchy for the hegemony, or thinks assimilation is a pernicious form of genocide ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
