Cheers to Factor75 for sponsoring today's video.
The Tau from Warhammer 40k and the Covenant from Halo have a lot of parallels. This begs the question, which empire is actually more powerful?

@@rigel9228 Not quite . Grunts are actually highly intelligent as a species. They are also as strong as a Chimpanzee and have a natural exoskeleton that is bullet resistant and fast finger reflexes. Not to mention attacking a Grunt wielding a Fuel Rod Cannon is the last thing a Kroot would ever do because the Grunts brothers would see the Kroot coming and they would all shoot the Kroot until it went down then rip it apart and eat it for attacking them. People who don't know Halo lore tend to not realize this but the Grunts are slave soldiers who run away from the Halo version of a pissed off Astartes with an autogun. Because they don't want to be there in the first place but given a reason to fight and well lets just put it this way the Grunts stalemated the entire Covenant at it's height when they rebelled against the Covenant. The only way the Covenant managed to not get wiped out by the Grunts was by glassing part of their home world and threatening to glass the rest if they didn't surrender immedately. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-06hW9liM2uc.htmlfeature=shared So the Kroot wouldn't get the chance to eat the Grunt. Not to mention the Grunts can literally smell their enemies from a distance away. So Kroot starts sneaking up on Grunt. Grunt smells the air , spins around and shoots the Kroot with his fuel rod cannon which fires radioactive explosives. Kroot dies . And that's assuming the Grunt is a lone which they are never sent in as a single unit. They are sent in as squads or above.

One big nitpik. In Halo, humanity wasnt really holding the Covanent back at all. They were losing at an alarming rate. The only reason humanity won was because of Master Chief destroying the Halo, and the great schism, which resulted in the Elites joining the side of humanity. If the schism didn't happen, the Covanent would have stopped humanity so hard.

@bluegolisano7768
@bluegolisano7768 15 дней назад
it gets worse! Engineers don't fix tech, they upgrade them and remember every specification and piece of data about that tech. and have no concept of not sharing this information when asked, or showing their work, _AND_ they can store data like a living SSD. not to be flippant about it, but they basically are _unironically_ extremely autistic puppies, but instead of licking the shit out of your toes, they can turn the nuclear bomb from 40kT into a planet killer while also making your engines infinitely more efficient, AND make the coffee machine run better and result in better tasting output. also they like frosting off cake, and they eat that shit by the bowl using an anteater-like tongue. *it is fucking adorable.*
@John2r1
@John2r1 15 дней назад
If they can the Engineers would happily repair and upgrade Tau tech. The Engineers like the Grunts are not willing members of the Covenant. They are there because the Covenant found them and essentially took them for their ability to interact with and repair any technology. The Engineers where created by the Forerunner and are essentially the Forerunners bio-supercomputer pets. The UNSC aka Halos humanity are the Inheritors of the Forerunner empire. So not only did the Covenant steal technology that rightfully belong to the UNSC but they also stole their pets. The Grunts likewise where forced into service. With that said Majorkill got a few things wrong. The first being the Covenants numbers. They actually number in the low Quadrillions. A large portion of that number are the Yanme'e or buggers as humans call them. And the Grunts who breed like rabbits and lay large egg clutches thus have a large number of young abd a short childhood period being capable of reproducing 5 to 8 years after hatching. These are adaptations due to the harshness of the Grunts home world Balaho. Where making it to 5 years old is an accomplishment. So there are two groups that IF the Tau can get some alone time with could be persuaded to join the Tau. The Grunts will want one thing first. The Tau have to secure the Grunts home world first. That's what the Covenant has over the Grunts. A fleet above their home where their families are, threatening to glass it if they step out of line again after the Grunt Rebellion.

Keep in mind, propaganda is gonna play a crucial role in that fight. Considering how bad certain species like the Grunts are treated in the Covenant (who are by far the most numerous as well) the water caste would have quite an easy time convincing a huge amounts of them to defect to their side. Sure, Brutes, Hunters and Elites would not be as easily convinced but everyone alse would be fair game.
@captaindonkeyballs
@captaindonkeyballs 15 дней назад
Actually quite a fun thought experiment, in general the interactions would likely go something along these lines: Elites: The dedication the elites had to the great journey was probably second only to the prophets, the likelihood of them ever even considering defecting without something like the revelations a highly respected figure like the Arbiter receives in halo 2 is negligible at best. Some small groups may have considered it, as there were rumblings of the leadup to the great schism even before the Arbiter, but the wider Elite population was far too fanatical. Brutes: Much like the elites, the larger population was simply too devoted to the great journey to ever even consider defection. That being said, the brutes are a tribalistic society, and some chieftains were not as on board with the covenant as others, Atriox and the banished are a good example of this, and though they are possibly too prideful to "join" the Tau, a group like the banished would likely be more than happy to help the Tay in exchange for resources they could use. Grunts: Again, the grunts fanaticism rivals the elites, though not for the reason you may expect, the grunts are actually a very intelligent species, growing fast and breeding in extreme numbers, this is the reason so many grunts are pilots and vehicle drivers. In addition, it is not entirely out of the question that some grunts could see the Tau as a way out of the covenant, the glassing of their homeworld during their rebellion could definitely have left a sour taste for those who know about it. Hunters: This one is interesting, since of all the covenant species the lekgolo worms are one of the only ones to not really believe in the great journey whilst also not really being there by choice. their deal with the covenant is basically that they help to interface with forerunner technology and in return they get access to space travel. The lekgolo are far closer to a tech caste than they are a combat one, which is the reason that hunters and scarabs are so rare, given that scarabs are actually mining platforms not really meant for war the disparity becomes even more obvious. If the tau could figure out an effective means to communicate with them, it's not out of the question a few lekgolo colonies could be willing to defect for a similar deal to what they have in the covenant. Quickfire, Drones, and other smaller client races not seen in the games: The drones are led by queens but that's kind of all we know about them, so whether their queens care about the covenant or not isn't really known, then there are a few other races in the covenant not really mentioned outside of books, but they're so minor they likely wouldn't matter even if we did know more about them. Engineers: The engineers are enslaved to follow the covenant, if the tau could free them, they would join and repair their tech happily, just as the one in ODST was willing to do Jackals: The question with the jackals is generally not "would they join" but rather how much the tau could pay to "convince them" to attack covenant ships instead. The jackals are the most independent of the covenant client races BY FAR, and are generally employed as mercenaries or privateers, literally one of the only covenant races we know are completely irreverent to the great journey. The jackals were even willing to trade with ONI under the covenant's nose, proving that they not only have the willingness, but also the independent navy necessary to act on their own. Finally Prophets: No, they are far too busy going extinct from arrogance, because yes, that is actually the reason there are so few.

@Jedi_Vigilante
@Jedi_Vigilante 15 дней назад
The issue with propaganda is that the other side has to hear it... and it can't have already been countered by propaganda from the other side. The Covenant have no real reason to land on Tau worlds. The vast majority of the time they landed on human worlds was because they expected to find Forerunner artifacts there. Otherwise, they just glassed the human worlds from orbit after defeating their fleets. What opportunity does that give the Tau to even have their message heard? Beyond that, during the war with the humans the Covenant had widespread propaganda disparaging humans as primitive, savage, hyper-aggressive creatures worthy only of extermination. That led to multiple instances of Covenant troops simply murdering surrendering humans (civilian and military) before any real communication could happen. Captured Covenant forces would often refuse to listen to the humans (if they could understand them at all) and many would commit seppuku rather than be captured. I have no doubt that if the Covenant chose to engage in an extermination campaign against the Tau, they would implement similar misinformation techniques. The only sort of exception would the be Covenant Engineers. I say sort of exception because while propaganda would be largely useless against them, they wouldn't need it to help the Tau. They just want to repair and build things, they don't care who it is for. If the Tau managed to capture some of them and figure out how to communicate, they'd have a literal library of Covenant technology at their disposal, not to mention the skills of the Engineers themselves (who could likely improve the existing Tau technology).

The Covenant did react by creating an Anti-Spartan unit known as a Prelate. These were Prophets, the highest species in the Covenant Caste system, who were genetically, and chemically enhanced and equiped with power armor as a direct counter to Spartans. It isn't unreasonable to say the Covenant would employ a direct battlefield counter that was similar.

Covenant Shipmasters often have anywhere from 15 to 50 spaceships under their control, even more as they ascend in rank. Each of these Shipmasters favor different units and tactics, even amongst the same species. There would be multiple Shipmasters in any assault force, making each different than the last. The Covenant are incredibly diverse in their tactics, and are quick to learn, the Tau would be forced to constantly evolve to match the Covenant; while the Covenant keeps making changes to doctrine to better combat an ever changing foe.

The Covenant may not be the end of the T'au, but they are alot more fluid and modular than they appear. Scarab types exist now that are completely sealed and present no weak points to be exploited. that specific instance of the Infinity ramming into that Covenant Cruiser is NOT indicative of the UNSC's overall slipspace capability. the Infinity is a special ship that incorporates the best and most expensive tech the UNSC has. its slipspace drive is Forerunner in origin which is superior to the Covenant's slipspace drives and the Covenant's Slipspace drives are better than the Average UNSC Slipspace drive.

The Forerunners had tech equivalent or maybe even more effective than current Necron technology, the stuff they had in the War in Heaven was enough to kill (until they realized that they really shouldn't do that) and shatter fully-powered C'tan and Eldar god-constructs, with certain Necron characters like Ahmontek killing at least 1 god-construct in melee combat. I will agree with you on the power of the Precursors, though. We don't have much Old One feats to compare them to, but considering that they are most likely trans-universal (with the Domain holding over a 100 billion years of knowledge) it seems reasonable.

@fadelsukoco3092 Remember, the Forerunners "killed" the other precursors. Their C'tan effectively. Like the Necrons defeating many of the Old Ones and their various creations as well in their war against ancient humans and the Precursors. One thing that is often missed is that, if it weren't for the events of the halo games, the humanity in halo would have gotten stomped. The Spartans were not enough to stop or even significantly delay the Covenant. An easy example is Reach. Reach is a critically important human world with immense defenses, but from the moment the covenant discovered it, it was only a matter of when, not if it was annihilated. That's the point of the Reach game. No matter how hard Humanity fights in a conventional war, the covenant will eventually win. Master chief is the savior of humanity, not by soloing the entire covenant, but by being lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time to destroy the covenant fundamentally via the halo rings and experiences with the arbiter. This misconception that the UNSC could win against the covenant if the Halo rings were never found often leads to them being scaled lower than they should

@@DovaDude The Covenant tend to advance in brief, huge leaps... usually through the discovery of new Forerunner tech, or coming across a new alien civilization. The Covenant are a lot like the Goa'uld from Stargate, in that their technological advantage comes largely from scavenging the advancements of others. If they encountered the Tau they'd likely win their first engagement pretty handily against them, giving them an opportunity to capture much of their tech (including multiple examples and classes of their railgun tech). If the Covenant decided it was good enough to be incorporated into their current technology, they'd probably actually pull back at that point (after glassing the planet of course) in order to do so, then come back with their own version of the tech AND whatever countermeasures they were able to devise. It wouldn't even take them very long, as the Covenant has an entire species of Engineers who love to do nothing but break down and improve on ALL technology. One of them repaired human tech (both simple and advanced) just seconds after being introduced to it. They do the same with hyper-advanced Forerunner tech all the time, so I doubt Tau tech would be a challenge for them.

Video idea: get republic from 25 063 bby (just 10 years affter it's formation (star wars legends)) into the 40k universe and think about how will it work out. at that moment republic is nearly fully located in the galactic core (so you can just replace leagues of voltan with it (as they didn't done anything yet)): - it's population is in houndreds of trylions (thousands of worlds, we don't know the exact population at that moment but we know that corusant with it's 3 trylion population in current setting is not considered overpopulated (and in 25 063 most of the republic's planets were considered overpopulated (that's the reason why the republic left the galactic core and started expanding in the galaxy)) -milions of soldiers (counting only organics) -an unknown number of droids, but we know that it's army was mosty made of them -a gigantic economy (as big as rest of the star wars galaxy combined (and star wars has better economy than 40k (economy not army so please no rage)) -galactic republic has similiar ship designs to tau (i mean by size and how they work, they look compleatly different) and is known from baing capable of making their ships and droids in civilian factories and shipyards (as there was one saying in the lore (one mandalorian cruiser can destroy 3 republic cruisers but republic can make 10 cruisers in an amount of time mandalorians can make 1), also it's droid production is nearly unlimited (in 10 years before the clone wars some corporations in the middle of nowewhere were capable of making 500 quadrilions of them, and the republic has more factories than that corporations and doesn't need to hide) -it's defensive strategies are composed mainly of slowering the enemy in the few first months of any war and then swarming him (houndreds per day is a number of ships nearly impossible to outproduce) -it has jedi (we don't know how powerful were jedi then, but we know that during the clone wars jedi were considered weak in comparison to their pre russan reformation countreparts and the pre russan ones were considered weak compared to the pre new sith wars ones (around 5 more rounds of someone being weak in comparison to someone), and 1 clone wars jedi = 1 000 000 clone troopers (one clone trooper = 200 dorids and 2/3 droids = 1 army trooper (star wars version of guardsmen))) - it's population is unified (it's a utopy (not a utopy, but as close as it can be without being a one)) - it has some op member species (duro - can reverse engeener anything (star wars hyperspace technology was invented by duros reverse engyneering technology of star wars gods, and changing it so it can be used without god technology), and caamasi - greatest diplomats imaginable (they were able to convince a star wars equivilent of orcs to join the republic (i mean the equivilent in diplomatic behaviours not military power), but they are the weakest species imaginable in a military matters (they are so peacful that they don't have an army and they don't know how to fight (that's why thay are always protected by military garrisons), they also all return to their home planet once a year so if the imperium is lucky it can wipe them out in one attack (thay are located in the deeper part of the core so it would need to be a big invasion))) -it is the resource richest part of the galaxy (both in star wars and 40k) - it is compleatly self sufficient all in all it's a faction with great diplomats, ability to reverseengener anything and a ability to mass produce ships. they are still weak in military comparison against any no tau faction in 40k, but as in a case of tau other factions could not care anougth about this faction to actually conquer it, but if imperium, chaos, tyranids, necrons or eldars ever decide to conquer it they can do it but it would be very costly. republic would also start by colonyzing any world they border and engaging in diplomacy with everyone they met. they would be close to tau in naivity (except towards the chaos as they already fougth it and they have a order of wariors being basicly the good version of chaos cultists as their closest allys)

Attempt number 52: What if the Primarchs were found in order of their creation? I got to say, the Covenant would be a good faction to have in 40K. They wouldn't win if they fought all other factions but they would have as good a chance as all others. The biggest win for the Covenant would be their navy, their 'Giga ships' are the CSO class Supercarriers and they're not 10 kilometres but more around 30. Then you have high charity which is around the same size as the Phalanx. And unlike most other factions they know how to keep building them so if they loose one, they can just build another. And for the record: If you get the Flood or the Forerunners from Halo in 40K and they would curve stomp the entire of 40K at once. Oh and the UNSC didn't win the war, they lost hard. They started with 800 worlds and that went all the way down to just Earth. The only reason they survived was because the Covenant entered a civil war that ended up destroying them, the only reason the winning side didn't just wipe out the rest of humanity was because they respected the Master Chief who in the end helped save them from the Flood.

...Wait the UNSC didn't technically win the war with the Covenant, it was more they were spared because of the Great Scism which led to the Covenant empire breaking out into a massive civil war with the winners being the human tolerating Sangheili separatists. Also, the humans lost pretty much every space battle with the Covenant. With UNSC fleets only winning if they heavily outnumbered the Covenant ones. Heck in the books and I think even the games it makes it clear that after the Fall of Reach Earth was humanity's last world at the time with it being where humanity planned to make it their last stand. What's interesting, to me at least, is the near complete lack of mention of the Kroot. Kroot mercenaries make up a not insignificant portion of the Tau's combat capacity. They are also absolutely terrifying. Not only are they massive cannibals (on average, standing between seven and eight feet tall) who are as strong as orks or even Space Marines in power armor, but they can adapt their biology based off whatever species they eat in real-time. The covenant would be an absolute dream for the Kroot to fight, given the great diversity of their warriors. Since Kroot can gain muscle mass just by eating Ork, and can even grow wings by eating flying enemies, there's no telling how incredibly potent they would become after feasting on the most powerful covenant warriors. Considering they inhabit something like ten worlds, and their society is entirely devoted to their warrior culture, there are always plenty of them to go around.
@RJALEXANDER777
@RJALEXANDER777 15 дней назад
I mean the Covenant is no stranger to cannibalism. The Brutes make sport of it (and the jackals dabble I think). They'd quite enjoy fighting the Kroot. I could picture the Brutes being relegated to brawling with the Kroot whilst the glory-hound elites go after the T'au. Brutes are also terrifying and I'd give one fair odds against an Ork in melee.
@Necroes
@Necroes 15 дней назад
@@RJALEXANDER777 The main issues I could see the Covenant having with sending the Brutes to fight Kroot is what happens when the Kroot start eating them, and suddenly become as large and as resilient as they are. Kroot eating your troops isn't an issue because its gross; It's an issue because they do so to augment themselves on a biological level to obtain the benefits of whatever they're consuming.
@RJALEXANDER777
@RJALEXANDER777 15 дней назад
@@Necroes I mean they only evolve if they win the fight. Can't eat if they're dead. Though honestly Brutes would be pretty great food options. They come with decent benefits, without a lot of the... Side-effects that many 40K species do.
@Necroes
@Necroes 15 дней назад
@@RJALEXANDER777 Surprisingly, not necessarily the case. Kroot are more than willing to use human-wave tactics when needed, but by default they actually prefer gorilla warfare and ambush tactics. Much like Tau, they're also completely willing to fall back instead of fighting down to the last man. Even if they lose the battle, so long as their enemies suffer losses, it's entirely possible for them to gorge themselves on any fallen foes before retreating. Also, Kroot winning isn't an unlikely thing to happen. While people think of them as pretty simplistic creatures, if pressed they can bring to bear everything from anti-vehicular weaponry, to a massive behemoth creature known as a Great Knarloc. Basically a T-Rex on roids with a ballista on its back that fires high-explosive charges capable of punching holes in a fully armored tank. Not to mention their fully Warp-Capable Warspheres; Massive battle ships, 9 kilometers in diameter, and among the very few of its class capable of landing on a planet.

The Covenant has a massive empire and the technology to get to the Tau, while the Tau don’t have the technology to get to the Covenant worlds. @CommissarChaotic
@CommissarChaotic 15 дней назад
That is basically where my mind's at. The Covenant outnumber the Tau I believe and they are too mobile for the Tau to properly counter unless they somehow get into enough attrition that the Tau maybe thinks of something good. Like the main reason why the Covenant were kinda bogged down from proper potential was that they are a theocracy and they worship Forerunner stuff. But the Tau don't really have that advantage like the UNSC did so the Covenant are probably gonna just glass the planets instead of going for any major ground battles.

The tau managed to figure out tactics to make orks decide fighting isnt fun. The tau could absolutely out-tactic the covenent even with starting on fairly similar footing. I like this breakdown. That said: How would each empire's non-war factions? Each faction's politics was brought up for how the conflict starts; but as empires diplomacy is a important question. I don't know what the covenant's diplomacy looks like; but I'm imagining water caste members going to components of the covenant empire and swaying component worlds to their side. The tau earth caste are pretty good with xenotechnology as well - they could reverse engineer everything from space marines short of their indoctrination. Sure; the master chief can use covenant weapons when he loots them off their bodies; but its not long before battlesuits with needlers; power swords; and covenant energy shields are in full production.

Really interesting analysis overall and I think it raises a good point about one of the reasons the tau are still around (besides the fact no one can send enough resources to destroy them and justify the cost). They can and will adapt FAST. Example being when the Imperium started fielding titans, once the Tau got over their shock that the giant metal Hunchbacks of Notre Dame were real, they retooled their Tigersharks (or that was when tidersharks were brought in i cant quite remember) too have twin railguns. One to take out the voidshieed and one to take out the titan. Another comment mentioned it but i would also be very curious too see how the Water Caste would fair. They had alot of success with Imperium worlds i could 100% see them swaying the Grunts and maybe even the Jackals to their side. I geuneinely kinda wish there were a few more actual empires in modern 40k just for a bit more galaxy wide tactical warfare. As it stands, the necros wake up and have a few planets before either doing nothing or being removed, the nids dont keep planets, the orks just sort of happen, the eldar dont have established worlds and the tau are just too small.
