Pour one out for Mathmech. Even in a world where Tear0 didn’t exist, the release of the Bystials is here to choke the life out of most decks that revolve around light and/or dark monsters. Ya know, the 2 attributes Konami prints most monsters as
Master Duel is just an uplayable mess. Oh, Runick Stun flooding the format, making games agonizingly slow and frustrating to play into? Let's semi-limit Aluber.
Master Duel is so funny because the base software is actually really good and there’s clearly been a lot of work put into it but Konami messed up the actual game part
It's like having a book that has an extremely killer cover, very elegant fonts and smells like lemon, and then the actual content is just the lorem Ipsum text you find as a placeholder for themes in Word.
@@DrAiPatch it does but they treat it like the tcg and hit what's already going out the door. They have really stepped up the banlist speed tho, we gotten like 1 every month
I'm vaguely struggling to process how after actual years of Halq not getting hit and every potentially abusable tuner being dragged on to the ban list in it's place, Verte gets hit and Cydra starts lamenting how "It should have been the fusion spells!"
thats just a cydra players despair. all the deck had was Verte otk. nowdays all it can do is a single, hard to bring out and easy to disrupt and inconsistent to go into omninegate...
@@Disappointed_Philosoraptor believe it or not I’ve gone to plat 4 before a season ending with a control variant of cyber dragons, when the 15 traps didn’t work people failing to read seiger did
@@Disappointed_Philosoraptor Wait... What do you mean Cyber Dragon Infinity is hard to bring out? That might just be a you problem. Cyber Dragon Infinity is so easy to bring out in a Cyber Dragon deck. All you do is go into it from Nova. It's one of the easiest XYZ boss monsters to summon, and it's so consistent that you can expect a Cyber Dragon player to be able to summon it every game if they can bring out a Cyber Dragon.
I still think Konami is really sleeping on the fact that Master Duel is a digital format that they can use to freely experiment with the banlist. They're slowly easing up on a few cards but they should just take the dive and do like 10 a month to test the waters.
Yea. Honestly. Konami is using master duel as a banlist curator zone. Since they still get like 1000 games played a second. So they can see what cards are fucked and what cards can come off
@@GhostHyperhex Yeah and that's why most of the banlist could be so different. A lot of the banned and/or limited cards are only good in a best of 3 game where they can side around card that easily beat them, unless it's cards that win games by themselves such as Masterpiece and Mystic Mine.
@@callmeriggy if by that you mean "ban every ftk enabler, floodgate and op + easy to bring out boss monster like access, Zeus and even baron as well as either butchering the consistency or endboard of combo decks then yes.
I still see people who say that the Bystials aren't that good because they only hit lights and darks. Like even if Tears did not delete all kind of opposition, the Bystials would still b the most batshit insane set of cards released this year.
I'm sure Bystials is goign to be the next archetype in which every card is going to be in the banlist, also most cards are Light or Darj that it only hits those 2 attributes isn't an issue.
I still remember MBT's "Hitting D.D. Dynamite on the Master Duel banlist means the bots won" take. None of the bots and FTKs the game has seen since have been nearly as effective and ubiquitous since that banlist.
And with Supreme King Starving Venom going to 1, most of the FTK decks are dead. The only bots left are self-TK bots, and if Konami wants to crack down on those, they'll have to make the gem economy more generous.
@@alexbrangan2885 actually pend magician can still FTK, they just need extra steps so they're a lot more vulnerable to interruptions. It's less an ftk deck now than a deck that CAN ftk, but likely won't.
I genuinely think that the only thing that would change if Konami had been more invested in Master Duel is that the existing player base would be a bit happier and thats it. There's simply no way to change the fact that modern yugioh is a bloated mess that very few people who hadnt played it before would be able to get into
it would have had way better player retention. The core game is really good but anything outside of it is just so bad, like no way to get cards from selection pack after they expire, no interesting enough events or other modes/format, no good enough reward system or incentive to keep playing, very bad customization/personalization and socials system, and maybe most importantly people just can't build new decks fast enough before they get bored.
Sheesh, yeah Master Duel really has fallen off. I think I stopped opening it for dailies around June and haven't touched it since we played Yugi/Kaiba format. Here's hoping they find some new ways to incentivize playing Master Duel, or whatever you're planning on doing with a possible tournament scene comes to fruition. PS: Good job dire on the Ed, Edd, and Eddy title card. Petition for the next title card to be Power Rangers-themed with that new Elemental Hero Monotron fanart that I saw on Twitter.
If they had picked up the pace of balancing for bo1 it'd probably would've held together longer, but there's a ton of issues intrinsic to the game. The other really big problems are the gem stranglehold and pack pacing. Gem prices are absolutely fucked and only become _kinda_ feasible when the limited purchase ones drop (ie. once every 20 blue moons), so nobody in their right mind is incentivised to buy gems, and the pace at which you get free gems is just ok. To top it off, you have a shitload of new archetypes getting added (and some that already existed) that have no secret pack. Selection packs should've either lasted forever or they should've been on the fucking ball with adding new secret packs, but noooo they can't exploit fomo if packs last forever (despite them ignoring that the fomo doesn't encourage people to buy gems, it encourages them to fucking quit). Basically if you got in early enough, you're at the crest of the wave, and always know what you want to build ahead of time gems aren't a major issue and selection packs give you a big enough window to pick up what you want. If you don't fit that demographic you're fucked; hope you like making alts.
It's a shame cause I can't play paper in my current situation but Konami ignoring the fact its bo1 when making b/l decisions pushes me back to ygopro after week 1 on of every month
@@TheSeventhChild yeah, figured that's what you meant before i fully posted my comment. forgot he could search that but yeah sangan is too slow at this point for people to care anymore.
Kashtira Fenrir is powerful enough that the Naturia Ishizu deck can't use Barrier statue of drought as a floodgate without having fenrir pop in and banish it face down.
God, master duel was so close to being phenomenal, but Best of 1 and Maxx C make it the sackiest unfun shit where half of duels end with someone surrendering in the middle of the first turn because they know they already lost the match-up and don’t want to wait and watch their opponent BM for another ten minutes. Literally the most fun way to play is not to play a significant number of games. Awful. Anyways Konami bring back Wheelie Breakers, Pokemon is trying to steal YuGiOh’s throne of childrens card games on motorcycles+dragons.
I am 100% sure they were scared people wouldn't want to play best of three......... Which 1 was dumb because they didn't build the ban list around that best of one..... What's the point of me staying to watch my opponent OTK me .
The best of one definitely absolutely and utterly crippled the game. You cannot have the absurd amount of broken and sacky cards (or decks like runicks that are very easily dealt with a side deck) in a game and then make it best of 1, where one of the most important tools in a player's hand are taken away.
I still argue that Maxx C is fine and people are just pissed they can't combo, but I also haven't played much past gold before getting bored, and people below platinum are idiots who don't know how Maxx C works.
I mean no one wants to give their opponent a ton of card advantage, and on the other side of it, it can get pretty damn boring knowing you can C to solve any shit opener if your opponent's reliably dense enough to try and play through it.
@@Yunglex313 I’d argue that crossout designator only being good in formats with Maxx C in it kinda proves that Maxx C is the majority of the problem here. And half of every top tier deck is specifically about dealing with Maxx C is probably not ideal either. If it wasn’t as uniformly effective against pretty much everything except Floo and Yosenju, or had some kind of activation requirement like Nibiru things wouldn’t be so bad, but having to deal with the Maxx C mini game literally every game is boring and unfun.
@@spikeshepard1897 he like Fenrir & he also think it's good but in this format Bystial is better for Tearls hence it's clash with bystial in deckslot. Using bystial also make you having a monster on the field so you can't ss fenrir hence its clash with bystial in gameplay
God rewatching this to see even more L takes. Fenrir flop, Zelatis sucks and only used in shitty decks (it’s at least better than they said), Rescue Ace being bad, etc. wasn’t expecting more L takes in a video about L takes
The funny thing is, you can apply the 'just run S/T hate' argument to *a lot* of decks or engines that have been problematic over the years, but a lot of TCG players have terminal cases of Combo Brain that would make them ignore this. This isn't to say that Mine didn't deserve to be banned (it 100% did), but rather that it's amazing it took a card as obnoxious as Mine to finally make it happen.
Maybe it's my old stubborn MR1 mind but I never could understand why people just won't run any level of backrow hate in the main deck. Opting to resign to lose game 1 because they have no answer to the very glaring weakness of their decks.
@@blackmark2899 because backrow hate isn't good against the majority of decks. You use draw twin twisters against fuckin spright and it does almost less than nothing, and makes you wish you drew dark ruler no more instead
@@dynomite9524 so players don't include counters to things that would slaughter their deck despite them knowing full well that weakness is there and when some one exploits that weakness the card that does it is called unfair. Sounds like people want their cake and want to eat it too.
@@blackmark2899 That's what the sideboard is for. If you lose game 1, that's fine as long as the sideboard helps you win games 2 and 3. If you lose a game against a weird matchup to win the match, that's fine. Backrow hate is not that good to main deck in most formats, but it's amazing to side
Tbf when runick came out mystic mine got like 10 times more annoying. Everything about runick seems to have had perfect synergy with mine, from the blind banishes being able to get rid of outs and get the deck out to being able to protect with hugin under mine. I didn't think mystic mine was ban worthy until the runick stuff came out but once it did it was for sure.
I really wish konami treated MD better, I CANT play paper format, and really like the accessibility of MD. I've been meaning to make a switch to other programs but it's been hard primarily due to being PC only.
Yeah, I mean they released firewall dragon from the banlist with a simple errata, why can't they just give one to Gumblar dragon? Make it cyberse exclusive so mathmech can make it instead of appolusa.
"The verte ban hurt Cyber dragons a lot!" You don't even need to Overload fusion to OTK with cyber dragons. Most of the time you don't even *want* to make Verte rather than make your other, much better extra deck monsters.
@@xecor4450Nah, that combo takes too many resources, loses to any interaction on machine dupe, and isn’t even an impressive board if you’re able to make it in the first place. Cydra has wayyyy better plays.
I remember reading this at the time and just thinking sarcastically "Yeah, Cyber Dragons just don't have enough support so it's totes unfair to ban Verte."
It's one thing to complain when a staple gets hit that hurts your rogue deck because Konami doesn't release support so you need the extra cards, it's another to complain that decks like Dark Magician or Cydra got hit. Boo hoo you only have 50 archetype support cards, what will you ever do now?
My roommate bought a box of Darkwing Blast with the vain hope that he'd be able to get at least 1 Kashtira Fenrir. He got Kashtira Unicorn, instead. Knowing that Fenrir flopped as Pankratops v. 2.0 takes the sting out of it, somewhat.
Unicorn is gonna be more expensive than Fenrir, watch. You might not believe it if you haven't read the new support, but Unicorn is the 1 card combo starter, not Fenrir.
@@dracoblizzard7944 but you play fenrir in the next best Deck. ishizu kash tear. i can see that kashtira will flop as a Deck cause it has so many fcking counter to it
I bought a box of Darkwing Blast and my two secrets were Mukraker and a Ghotti card. All my ultra rares were Ghotti and Ninjas. Meanwhile I opened 5 Fenrir and three Magnamhut out of the ten splat packs I bought at my grocery store.
One thing OG players got wrong is accepting the new game play style that's out!! IMO: It makes the game 3 times harder to understand. Also allowing the new cards to not meld with the old cards. Changing the rules what felt like every year.. Ohy! A Huge F U to the OG Players!!
I think the real take away here is that players still think of yugioh in the lens of archtypes and evaluate them based almost on the average of their card pool. In reality archtypes can be the central focus of a deck but 7/10 times you are better of stripping them down to like their best 12 cards at most and then mixing them with another 12 card engine filling the rest of the space with negates and using both as material fodder for the best extra deck monsters those will sometimes be in archtype kitkalos, ariseheart, purrly or be totally generic.
I once looked through every rank 7 to try and use in a Red-Eyes deck and though Mind Hacker was the best one ever, and if only there was a better rank 7 engine to abuse him...
That Fenrir take is completely off base. Even if the Kashtira archetype didn't exist outside of that singular card it'd still be unthinkably powerful and a staple
That take that we need more link-1s that give a +1 on summon is an all-time bad take. No need for retrospective on that. Link-1s in general should not exist.
Dire: You, in and of yourself, are a love letter to this community. What a fantastic & nostalgic intro. If I wasnt using my paycheck to get 5% on singles and sealed products by clicking the link in the description and using code: CIMO5, I would donate to a Dire patreon
Mystic Mine should have never gotten banned. In a game with a million different pieces of S/T removal to pick from and people were still losing cause they chose not to run any? That should sounds like a bad player getting punished to me. But hey maybe we should just ban every card that bad players like to complain about like Evenly Matched and Ash Blossom
Mystic Mine was banned because, in general, it's a completely obnoxious monkey enabler. It was readily searchable, while the backrow removal that worked on it usually wasn't
Honestly the Runick take IS kinda correct? In context of IRL competitive scenes. Yeah it's the primo bullshit stun deck people main in OCG after Eldlich got forgotten but it loses in practice and in popularity against based decks like Tri-Spright and Labrynth, and even Tear without Kit. As for MD, MD players are mostly bots anyway and floodgate Runick need no brain power to pilot, so it checks out.
My hot take (not) is that Tearalament was a watershed moment in power creep. Theres no longer any rules to how powerful a card/can be. Tear, kashtira and bysstials are all stupidly overpowered
@@HumanoidCableDreads I meant restrictions more than rules. Konami could literally print a card that just says draw 5 and I wouldnt be surprised anymore
I just wanted to play pure Kashtira cuz it looked cool. For reference, I play casually most of the time at locals with friends. When the set dropped and Kashtira Fenrir was $50 and Unicorn was $10 I was shocked. Now the price keeps climbing. They aren't even secret rares.
This video reminds me of when I used to play rainbow neos as a rogue pick then I looked at how expensive the deck was on master duel when it released and didn't touch it since. Sad verte ban killed what was a pretty fun going 2nd deck
I remember people were saying we'd need an emergency ban for HERO Kid because it'd be too powerful with Sprights. Turns out even Sprights can't make HERO Kid playable.
Spright/Splight was definitely going to overshadow Tear as a meta threat but then Konami hit Spright on the ban list and buffed Tear with new cards. Kind of hard to make a correct call on that one consider no one saw it coming.
I knew Konami would hit Spright and not Tear. Spright uses old cards like Nimble Beaver, Deepsea Diva, the Frog engine, etc. Tear uses Bystials and Ishizu. Which one of these decks is going to sell more new cards?
Magikey got all that hype only to have 1 copy of Batosbuster and the negate counter trap show up in a topping drytron deck. Pretty good tech choice tho
i thought adventure was gonna be bad because i read token and my eyes glazed over and stopped paying attention. i also thought spright wasnt gonna be tier 0 like everyone at my locals said it was going to be, guess who was correct that time 😎
Without Ishizu coming out and the frog cards being banned and limited Spright could have been tier 0. Spright was able to synergize with old cards so Konami did not want that to happen. Gotta sell the new cards any way they can.
As Beetrooper user in MD, you either take short combo to add 2 handtraps Maxx "C" and Retaliating "C", with an additional Sting Lancer if your hand good enough. Or you can take the long line make 3 Beater from 3k Link untargeted and can't be destroyed (Mirrorjade say hai), another 3K but can comeback if destroyed or banished, and 4K boy who don't care about everything. Or you can summon Xyz with permanent negate monster (Cicada) and Winda at home (Scary Moth).
I started playing Beetrooper in part because of the Maxx C promise, but I'm pretty sure I only ever play it if I hard draw it at this point. Making the big boys is way stronger than constantly threatening to refill my hand.
