I’m so glad that you continuously come back to the advice of “buy less stuff.” Too many other channels skip over that advice, but you do a great job of walking the line between reduced consumption and responsible consumption!

I already have a love hate relationship with terracycle and this just pushed it. Terracycle has some work to do with their partner ships. An example, Taco Bell sauce packets are accepted, awesome, well why doesnt every taco bell have a Terracycle box accessible for this recyclable? Should that not be part of their contract? I mean who is gonna sit there and save up their sauce packets individually for a year to make worth shipping when TB could full a box a week and send it.

My roommate bought a pineapple the other day, and it had a tag that said "SUSTAINABLY GROWN" in bold caps with tiny lettering underneath saying 'grown in Costa Rica'. Then, the other side of it had something about Kenya and how the company supports farmers in Kenya, as if Kenya and Costa Rica have any connection beyond the fact Americans respect neither.
@hynnow18

i'd be really interested to see a video on how sustainable grocery boxes are actually sourced, as i've heard rumors that they're primarily taking food away from food pantries and other places that supply free/very low cost produce to people in high need rather than diverting food from landfill

I never understood not being 'allowed' to unionize. Like, McDonalds employees will get fired if they try. Obviously if you aren't allowed to, you probably have a good reason to. & I don't like Lush honestly lol. One thing in particular I’m noticing about reformation is that they are speeding up their cycle of how much clothing they release. Yikes that doesn’t sound good! Not surprising either. I feel like I’ve seen more brands push the idea of “our stuff is made sustainable so you don’t have to feel guilty buying it.” Rather than pushing that they have great quality so you can buy it for life. So yea, you might not be overthinking things.

I've bought jeans from Ref in the last twelve months and they're made in China now when clothes I bought from them in like 2017 were made in America. So that is also a clue that sustainability is no longer a priority for them, because they are moving production to a country like China with notoriously lax environmental and worker protections.

I remember listening to your podcast with Terracycle and being like “I still don’t know what they do”. I can imagine how frustrating it was to try to get the answer out of him. Like, great! It would be awesome if every thing can be recycled, but don’t charge people money for something that isn’t be done (more likely than not). It’s irritating to see their brand out there… on Taco Bell sauces. How are those recycled?!? I mean, come on!

How unsustainable are luxury brands? That would be a great topic
@PavementPaperclip
@PavementPaperclip 2 года назад
Very. Many luxury brands simply destroy leftover items that haven't sold out themselves. That's a common thing to do so the brand can keep their high prices, otherwise the products would end up in outlets and more people could afford them and they wouldn't be as exclusive.

Hi Shelbi! Thank you for yet another interesting video. I'm watching from Belgium so some of the brands you mentioned I don't know, but I still find it fun to watch since it keeps me critical when consuming. I try my best to only buy stuff I actually need, and so skincare is the thing I've been really focussing on lately. Have you seen the criticisms on 'reef safe' sunscreen lately? As in, that the regular, chemical skincares aren't necessarely worse for coral reefs and ocean life. Or that zinc, that's been used in the reef safe sunscreens isn't always ethical either (like with mining and working circumstances)? Since summer is coming up (though we have snow now in Belgium, no April Fool's joke, sadly) I think that could be a very interesting video! Anyways, I'll be watching and taking in all the knowledge you're willing to impart!

Can confirm, as a Swiss, we pay fairly high taxes on our garbage bags and so that strongly incentivises recycling. Also most things aren‘t picked up like they are in my experience in Canada and I think that is a factor in less littering, because aren‘t in open containers all night and prone to fly away.

I was also curious about the process Terracycle uses to recycle their things. Glad I am not the only one! My main complaint about their practice is similar to other recycling/compost efforts: I think more people would be interested/willing to take their worn out clothes/shoes and food scraps to be recycled/composted if there were more designated drop off areas. For instance, I have some shoes that have bit the dust, but the only drop off location in my area is for sneakers. There is Terracycle, but it is SO expensive, even for the smallest option. If companies were more responsible with their waste, the consumer wouldn’t have to do extra research or pay an exorbitant amount to have their stuff properly recycled.

Sweet Earth. I initially loved their benevolent bacon and mindful chik'n, but they're owned by Nestlé, who steals water from the Indigenous peoples of Africa, Asia, and the Americas, as well as from the drought- and wildfire-stricken California, and the vulnerable people of Flint, Michigan. And of course, there's no way to steal water from humans without also stealing that water from the wildlife. You would literally do less harm to animals and the environment by buying real meat from a local butcher.

I really appreciate this video and love that you are always working to find unique ways to educate people on sustainability. I used to think Terracycle was good, but had mixed feelings when Loop came out. It has good intention but it’s not the solution for making big brands sustainable. The only truly beneficial program I know of that Terracycle offers is their cigarette butt recycling program. I see cigarette butt collection bins in downtown Baltimore that people actually use which is great and primarily they use the butts to make benches or playgrounds. Obviously it would be best if people just stopped smoking, but the world is not going to quit overnight.

Terracycle always seemed sketchy to me, even long before I had the right language to express my suspicion. So I'm disappointed my instinct was right.

Id be curious to see you look deeper into some of those produce boxes, I know you've talked about them before but from what I've seen and heard they're not really offsetting food waste by much. that "food no one would buy" would have gone to food pantries, and as someone who works in a grocery store, I see how much produce gets wasted on that level. So if less people are buying produce from store in favor of these boxes, and then the grocery store has to then throw away more bad produce, how is that any better, yknow?

Grocery stores adjust their orders according to how much sales they are expecting to have. Some even collect payment info to make data of what sells. They use this info to avoid wasting money.

I like some of lush's products but it is a shame that they support the Hunt Saboteurs Association which is definitely not ethical so I try not to support them.

I honestly kinda feel like an idiot now because I am a person who saves up the bags from my kids Yves nuggets and their apple sauce pouches in boxes in my garage because Terracycle had a free program for those items and now I feel stupid for doing that because I didn't know anything about this

I live in Europe and Lush has a very poor reputation regarding working conditions. In Austria, work related laws are pretty elaborate so the standard is high and I've heard from both news articles but also people who worked there that I personally know that they have a very toxic way of running their teams. Also they have been continually critisised for misleading marketing because many people seem to be under the impression that their products are natural cosmetics, when they're not. I don't see why a company would have to appear differently as they actually are.

Good video. I'm glad to hear you speak out against companies even if you have had involvement with them. I was wondering if you would do that. Glad to see. I have concerns about Lomi and Pela. My concern is about how the company ships the raw materials from Canada to China where the product is actually made. I got this information from their website. Then the products are shipped from China to where it is sold which, according to their own website, China does not appear to be a customer. All of that shipping uses a lot of energy. Why don't they instead make them in Canada where it is actually sold and right next to the US where it is sold as well. The only reasons I see to make it in China would be cost savings because of low wages and/or lax regulations. It feels like greenwashing to me. I also think the product is questionable (the Lomi). Is a user really saving any energy by processing their food waste like this instead of landfilling it after you factor in the energy to ship the raw materials and then final product and the energy necessary to create each Lomi. As you have said repeatedly you have to look at the entire footprint. I've seen lots of other comments on other platforms stating concerns about Lomi's sustainability. I realize that there are people that have no other access to a way to compost but I'd really like to see a breakdown showing if it is more sustainable to use a Lomi over that group of people simply landfilling their food waste.

I have been frustrated by Terracycle for years. Such a scam, I love in Boulder, CO and can't find anywhere to drop anything off and have never been able to get the "free" mailers from brands to ship stuff back. I totally agree, a huge scam.

**in regards to the Terracycle controversy** like....if a consumer is going to be irresponsible and buy these items in lieu of sustainable purchases, they DO shoulder some of the responsibility for what happens to the item after they finish with it. Consumers need to stop supporting these companies.

The thing about terracycle is that the alternative for these things is landfill so if I’m being honest I’m going to keep using it in *hope* that something is being done with it because that has a better potential outcome than the guaranteed outcome of landfill
