If you don't want to buy then don't buy it, but don't say it's a tourist Trap cause it's not, you're portraying them as like scammers. All I see is women that want to show case their fijian artifacts and by the way that's what we do also in our normal lives, we make artifacts for functions and cultural events. If you want to document the real fijian culture get in contact with Fijians thats living in the village. That's not nice of you telling viewers to be careful...Fijians are one of the nicest people you'll know, they don't fake being nice to you. Those women are stay at home mothers, resorts organisers tourists to experience the village life and this one way the village mothers earn money by selling artifacts. Just be nice and respectful, don't have to buy anything if you don't want to. You wanted to go to the wedding?? You got to be invited and properly dressed, just cause your American doesn't give you the entittlement to act however you want or do whatever you want. You want to see the real Fiji, first you need to learn how to communicate with Fijians, learn how to dress respectfully when entering a village and it's nice to ask people if its okay to film them.

As a native Fijian first of all the people who were taking around has no idea what was the main reason of your Journey,2nd they are not Native Fijians like us who have Villages,roles in villages and also have status. That pottery village is well known in Fiji. I was working as a tour Guide before and we don’t force people to buy anything because that’s not part of our culture. Next time try to find the right people if you wana go to the right place,especially the Native People.

Ivain , between 1879 and 1916 the British plantation owners brought in about 60,000 indentured workers from India. The people you met are descended from these people. Also more came as traders. There is an issue between the two cultures the Melanesian Fijians and the Indo Fijians (Indians). A Melanesian Village is very different from a Indo Fijian. As Fiji gained is Independence from Britain but remained part of the Commonwealth, the differences grew. There was a Military Coup in the 1980s and many of the business people of Indian descent left Fiji for Australia and New Zealand. The Indo Fijians make up 38% percent of population but own less than 2% of the land. The Melanesians original Fijians hold their tribal lands. Some of the hotels are built on leased lands held by Melanesian Fijians. It is on the 2 main Islands you will see the Indian and ever growing Republic of China nationals. Hope this helps explains the mix. Australians and NZers make the biggest tourist group.

If you really want to know the true identity of an I-Taukei or the other part that RU-vidrs dont show then get an Indigenous Fijian to show you around. Firstly, let me correct your tour guide, Sigatoka valley is not a village. Secondly, those Itaukei living in the valley are not poor. Yes they are farmers and they supplies vegetables of all kinds and crops to towns in the western and even import out of Fiji. Thirdly, your tour guides are not indigenous fijian but Indian descendants arrived in Fiji back in the days. They dont live in a village setup they live in settlements. We Indigenous fijian or the Itaukei are known for our hospitality, care, love and how we conserve our traditions and culture. People around the globe who's been to Fiji knows that. Fiji tourism are not scammers (tourist trap or whatever you're labelled those itaukei ladies with). We values our identity more than money and whatever you think of the tourism. Next time if you think of visiting again, get in touch with and Itaukei if you really wanna know deep about Fiji's culture.

Hey bro, just some background information, that most people do not know, because the British tried to turn both populations against each other by religion and all!: Okay, so basically, Fijians, Solomon Islanders, and other Melanesians are a recently diverged group who sailed out of Papua New Guinea around maybe 3kya. So papuans, were one group with Australian aboriginals until the landmass separated, but where did this group come from. We can see who are the closest related groups to papuans using an online search. ‘The genetic makeup of Papuans is primarily derived from Ancient East Eurasians, which relates them to other mainland Asian groups such as the "AASI", Andamanese, as well as East/Southeast Asians’ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indigenous_people_of_New_Guinea#:~:text=The%20genetic%20makeup%20of%20Papuans,2%25%2C%20next%20to%20additional%20archaic. That is why the population of india is so large, because it is the home to the oldest populations.
