I agree about the gangster wannabes. I live in a very rural area. It's mostly big farms, with small towns scattered around. Our high school isn't even in a town. It's in the middle of nowhere. Anyway, some high school kids decided they wanted to form their own gang. They made up a symbol and started painting on road signs and stuff. They claim they're marking their territory. It's really impressive seeing a gang sign painted on a manure spreader. These kids go around threatening people when they look about as threatening as burnt toast. People just roll their eyes and ignore them. Except for this one guy. They tried bullying an older lady at a convenience store. She walked out, and they started laughing. Then this huge man walked in, demanding to know who mouthed off to his mother. The gang decided to run, but one wasn't fast enough. The guy grabbed him and got in his face. Said if that happened again, they would be wishing they had a real gang to protect them. Meanwhile, all the other customers were laughing hysterically. It's so cringe it's pretty painful to watch.

I looked up some info about OCD because a friend has it. The description is accurate. The actions they take that look weird or annoying are born from an "overbearing sense of responsibility." They're not just flipping a light switch on and off three times before leaving a room. They're saving their friends and family from some terrible fate.

As someone who has ADHD, I hate when people romanticize it and say some tone-deaf things about it. It's not just hyperactivity or not being able to focus. We can focus; it's more that anxiety puts your brain into overdrive and prevents you from doing even simple tasks. I was diagnosed when I was younger because I was disruptive.

Yep, overthrowing to the point of freezing because you're terrified of making a single mistake. All the while you're fighting for control over the anxiety. It's not fun, or quirky and can be extremely embarrassing at times.

YES! I’m obsessed with cleaning and tidying things (not to the point of being a disease or a symptom of one, but to the point of being annoying lol) so no one believe I have ADHD because the stereotype says we are dirty and super messy. But people fail to understand and don’t believe me when I say that my extreme cleanliness is precisely an over reaction I had to consciously develop. I’m naturally a messy person and my mess can get VERY overbearing and ugly. There’s a point where, if the mess started, I simply freeze and am not able to even start organizing it, so being an annoying clean-obsessed person was the only successful answer I could find.

stalker behavior. a centuries-old vampire stalking a teenage girl, watching her sleep, etc. is disturbing and creepy. Or the Notebook - that was a horribly abusive and manipulative relationship. threatening to drop from a ferris wheel. screaming & hitting during fights, etc. That is NOT a romantic movie. there are so many others.

Thank goodness for OCD being mentioned here! Physical disabilities can also be romanticized, non disabled people often only seeing the positives. "You're not disabled, you're just differently abled!" dancing around the term disability like it's a bad word. Trivializing the real struggles we have to make disability more digestible for themselves. Also labels are important, no our conditions aren't all we are, and no we don't blame everything on them either. I wish this whole "labels bad" thing wasn't said, it's annoying when people say it, because it suggests labels are only negative and help nobody....when in reality it helps us understand ourselves and what we're going through better. I mean if it's a condition....the label helps us figure out how to manage it, and find communities. And suggesting labels are bad treats us like we're all just sitting here, moping and blaming every negative trait we have on our conditions. That is insulting. We're really just trying our best here. OCD was labeled as the 10th most disabling disorder out there for a reason...

21:24 as someone transgender, this sort of talk CAN be dangerous. "I hate being trans and I wish I wasn't, it hurts every day" is less an issue with BEING trans, and just with THIS person. But saying it's a given is harmful. Also, dysphoria isn't required to be trans, like this person says.

I have OCD as well as being on the autism spectrum. I wasn’t diagnosed with the OCD until adulthood but the symptoms started when I was very young. Started with me counting the streets I’d pass in the car when I was barely old enough to count. I’d count my footsteps too. It was so physically exhausting that eventually I made myself limit the counting to certain locations. I didn’t understand why I was doing it, just that I couldn’t stop. I’d also step over or exclusively on cracks in the sidewalk. For me, the compulsions started before the intrusive thoughts (I didn’t start getting intrusive thoughts until high school). I know nothing bad will happen if I don’t do the compulsions but I just can’t stop (which is why I hate tiled floor since it sets the OCD on overdrive). I think the reason no one knew about it is because all my counting was done in my head. No one heard me count. Plus a lot of my symptoms overlap with the autism so I’ve had to separate the symptoms that don’t work with autism to understand it. I still fear the intrusive thoughts because even though I know I don’t want to do any of it they’re powerful thoughts and if I’m too weak I won’t be able to resist. Instead of fight, I surround myself with things I like doing to serve as distraction. Seems to work well enough

Celiac disease is the worst. It’s the smallest things you miss that you would never think of. People automatically think oh you must miss cake and pizza and pasta, no I miss the convenience and the ability to eat anything and anywhere. Not to mention it’s not even just food I have to worry. About. Adhesives, lotions, make up, shampoo, extracts, anything can contain gluten and you won’t know until you have a reaction.

As someone with OCD that centered on violent thoughts for a while, that description is spot on. It's like 2 thought streams running at once: the obsessive thoughts wrapped around something awful, and the rational thoughts trying unsuccessfully that the obsessions aren't true.

I was diagnosed as hyper-active as a child. This was MANY years before anyone even heard of ADHD. My mum hated how little I would sleep. Sitting still is almost impossible - if I do manage it, it doesn't last long. I am a chronic fidget. I can't even leave my desk at work without something to fidget with in my hands. If I go out to eat or have coffee, once the plates are cleared I struggle due to having nothing to fidget. Often I end up organising the container with the packets of different sugars (if there is one) - this leads to people thinking I have OCD or at least some traits. Nope, I just have to fidget.

story 1 is relevant to me. i am diagnosed with autism (i fit the aspergers stereotype extremely well) and some pretty bad adhd. this stuff has a massive effect on how i live my life. i have had people say different variations of "i wish i had aspergers because it would make things in my life easier" after people figure that that i am diagnosed with it. then there are the people who say some variation of "i have a little bit of adhd" or "everyone has some adhd". both examples undermine a lot of the specific issues that myself and many others deal with. theres also people who think that adhd is just a scapegoat for being lazy which i hate the most. i want to get my things done and i try my best to get them done, but it is so hard for me to stay on task even though i want to get what i am doing over with and out of the way. i have to make the thing i need to get done the only thing i can do. i need a quiet room with everything that can distract me out of sight to prevent my mind from wandering and thinking about things i would rather be doing. even with the least amount of distractions possible, i still find myself freezing up sometimes and my mind going blank. if i have to do stuff somewhere that i can be distracted easily then im probably at a third ish of the efficiency. i heavily minimize the amount of things that can distract me because i struggle with getting back into work mode after i have been distracted by something. all of this is with a pretty high dose of adderall as well lol. i have tried alternatives to adderall and it works the best. i cannot get anything done without medication and i hate being reliant on it. first thing with the autism is my emotions are blunted. i feel nothing or close to nothing almost all of the time, if i am feeling more than normal then it is a very intense emotion and there is no in between. i get incredibly bored very easily (idk if the autism causes this, but its still relevant to issues here). i find myself craving ways to stimulate my brain in some way that isnt mindlessly scrolling social media. every hobby i have had has been very stimulating to my senses and i think thats the biggest reason that i enjoy them. i think i have adapted very well socially when it comes to understanding social queues and how people are going to feel/act when in a certain situation while taking the nuance of their own personality and experiences into account. despite the fact understand how to be social with people, i do not enjoy interacting with the vast majority of people because i feel they are uninteresting and they lack common sense on average. im not trying to be pretentious when i say that either, i just hear people contradict themselves without realizing it way too much. i find that sort of thing annoying to hear along with the forced conversations just to fill the silence. being around that drains my already non existent social battery. it doesnt take long for it to run out and once i am to that point, i am putting on an act until its over and its exhausting. i want to tell them to just shut up and stop talking about nothing but i just shut up and let them ramble. i only perform this act because i dont want to hurt other people and life is a lot easier when people are on good terms with you. i hate that i have to perform this act instead of it being more natural. i know most your average person still has to act sometimes, but its so constant for me. i am very frustrated that i cannot people who i am content with being around. when i see other people enjoying each others company despite the things i talked about, i feel lonely and envious of what they have. i want to be happy with what i have but i dont know how. i try not to use my diagnoses as an excuse for my issues because making excuses to justify flaws that i can work on is not beneficial to me or my growth as a person. the things i listed are things related to my diagnoses that i deal with in everyday life though. when people say "tee hee im so quirky and scatter brained and sometimes i cant focus on something. i might have adhd.", it undermines the things i have to do to be in environment where i can work without being completely distracted the whole time. when people tell me they wish they had autism the same way i do for the intelligence, it just reminds me of how little people actually understand the disorder and what i go through with it. i usually say "if only you knew" because its all i can really say.

I hate the whole flippant attitude towards EDs. It isn’t a diet or fad. It is a truly terrible mental disorder. I can agree with the other people speaking in this video about the symptoms and difficulties of actually living with anorexia. It is mentally, physically and emotionally exhausting, and not done for fun or attention. It has the highest mortality rate of mental disorders. The fear, shame, depression, anxiety, exhaustion… you know how much you are damaging your body, but you also can’t easily stop. Even now, though I guess I would class myself in recovery, the mental itch of the disorder never fully stops. I imagine it is in some ways similar to those with addiction… I send love and support to all who have been affected by mental disorders. I wish you health and happiness.

The one about the person claiming to have all these different mental health conditions, and actually managing to get disability for it is frustrating. My family and I have been pretty certain for a while that I probably have ASD, but I can't even get help from my university for things related to it because I don't have an official diagnosis. The current wait times for a diagnosis means that I probably wont even get one before I finish university (currently in 1st year). There are many people that self-diagnose while they are on the waiting list for things like this, which I believe is completely valid, but those who just think it's trendy to have a certain condition make it seem like our genuine self-diagnosis isn't to be taken seriously, and that's why a lot of places wont accept a self-diagnosis even if you can prove you are actively trying to get an official one.

I've always fallen for the evil characters in fiction...Severus Snape, comic book villains, etc. (Usually the evil genius's toady, for some reason.) But I have also always understood that while these characters make fine fantasies, they would be TERRIBLE partners in real life. I think the big problem here is an inability to make the distinction between what makes a good fictional story and what is functional/healthy in real life.

Oh gosh, the first one about OCD. I have it mildly as a symptom of my anxiety disorder. Before I got diagnosed and medicated, I had set routines that I HAD to do, or it would throw off my entire day, primarily being I had to park in the SAME parking spot every day at work. If someone was parked there (even though there is no assigned parking), I would fixate on how terrible that person was for parking in "my" spot, to the point where if I could see it and saw it vacant at any point in my day, I would have to move my car there immediately. It is not fun.

Autism. At least, a few years ago, autistic characters were in everything, and not representing us as unique, variable, often highly-capable people. We're not all savant puzzles for you to marvel over and try to 'fix,' or a child having a meltdown that gets mistaken for a tantrum, or a non-verbal beating their head against a wall. And I know we're interesting, even magical to some of you, but neurotypicals just can't understand - it's HARD. It absolutely sucks to live life feeling completely alone, unconnected to anyone else, frantically trying to work around our lack of social awareness and never knowing what the right thing to say is. We're supposed to have pride, insist we wouldn't change who we are, but TBH, if there was a cure available, I'd jump on it.

I have mild OCD, it is not fun, I hate it. When you brain is fighting you and telling you to do irrational and strange things, like "oh, you walked into the kitchen wrong, so you need to walk out and enter the kitchen again the RIGHT way" and make you repeat things until it's "Right" it's not a good time. I can still remember feeling like, if I didn't exit the kitchen from the same place I entered it, something bad would happen. Thankfully therapy and medication, it's a lot less of a problem, but I still have my moments. The trans one, yeah, that is a huge problem, I have seen first hand the problems with people pretending or being coaxed into thinking they are trans, when they aren't. I watched a friend get in a relationship and get gaslit into thinking they were trans by others. Only for them to basically have to start detransitioning and the person that was gaslighting them into being trans, also ended up detransitioning. I have had people try to pressure me into being trans too. As for things like gangs, music and media glorifying cheating, general gang culture, gangster rap, so on, all of that stuff I think needs to be ended and not glorified. A cousin of mine decided he was going to be a gangster and listened to tons of gangster rap, now he is in jail because of that lifestyle. His GF who he knocked up pulled his gun on him because she found he was cheating, he took it away from her, and a neighbor saw he had a gun, not even pointing it at her and the GF was holding a baby. So he got child endangerment charges.

The gluten allergy story reminded me of my families diet choices. My mother and brother made the decision to go vegetarian, and whenever our mother comes to visit, we look at the menus of restaurants ahead of time to accommodate them. At the same time, when my brother and I go visit our mother, I'll eat whatever she makes. Both of them know I eat meat on a regular basis, and they're fine with it, and I'm fine with what they eat. Every so often, they'll have a piece of meat from someone else's plate, like mine or one of my other brothers' or stepfathers plate. It does depend on the type of meat. Also, don't get started on the whole "they're not true vegetarians" argument. It's a life choice they made, and I've heard that argument more times than people actually respecting them for it.

As a South African, I get a lot of flack for this one. But for me, it's Nelson Mandela. He was NOT a good man, both in his personal life and political life. He did more harm than good but he is still deified til this day, he's even on our money. All he did was throw a rainbow coloured blanket over the gnarly mess of apartheid and deep rooted racism in South Africa, which is still ongoing. His main focus was fattening his pockets and making sure that only he and his kids would be financially free in a country where most of the wealth is still concentrated in the minority (whites). There's a lot more but this comment is already long enough. The more I learn about that man, the more I dislike him. Apparently it's the same story with Gandhi and Mother Teresa. Now I side eye all these so called "humanitarians".

(SARCASTIC) So, beccause you are rich you can't suffer. Got it. Money is the cure. No? "Everything she is able to do, but wont". Man, do you have her medical records? Honestly, people like you are the oeople who keep me, who have a frickin disorder diagnosed by 12 people looking through 20 years of medical records, from actually getting the benefits I need. Better to shatter my spine I guess. Faster.

No one likes Severus Snape. They loved the actor. He's also much worse in the books. Most people with common sense don't actually love assholes in comedies. We love to hate them or find them funny. We don't actually want to meet them in real life, and we laugh when they face actual consequences. 😏 Now, we might care about them based on how they turned out they way they did and if they have redeeming qualities. And if the redemption is earned, we'll cheer all the same. 😊

I think people like movie versions of Snape. He is a lot less of an ass in the movie. Sure he may be harsh most of the time but deep down he cares. Book Snape is just a straight up bully, a 30 year old guy who mentally stuck in a high school.

The thing about the "people pretending to be trans" one, is that it's not being trans itself that's dangerous, but the transphobia and the fact that the system is passively if not actively hostile towards trans people. This person's perspective is also coloured by refusal to see the joy that comes with being trans, in discovering yourself and becoming properly aligned with who you are on the inside. They also forget that if everyone, and I mean everyone, thought about their gender and took some time to discover who they really were outside of that voice telling them who society expects them to be, we would all be better off. The vast majority of people would conclude that the gender they were assigned at birth is correct, but they would also be less and less likely to perform their gender for expectation's sake and do more of what makes them happy. You would have far fewer men being violent towards others out of an internalised fear of not being "masculine enough". A lot of people would stop pretending to be straight, too. Just sit with yourself a little and work it out. Some introspection will do everyone some good. If you experiment with your gender, decide that it's not for you, and someone says "you were pretending to be trans, you're terrible", you don't need to listen to them. In fact, just ignore them. You are who you are - no one else matters in that.

I can't stand the "social anxiety" thing - you don't have anxiety because going to a new situation makes you nervous!!

Wow, starting off by whining that classic 80s films were sexist. Lame.

I’m sick of people romanticizing the relationship between the Joker and Harley Quinn! He abused TF outta her. It wasn’t love, in any way shape or form for him. Yes she was totally devoted and in love with him, but he never cared about her as more than a toy.
