@@craigmaitland4112 I got my tank from a Petsmart, but you can probably buy them cheaper online. The tank I have was made for fish, so it can hold water. I just bought a screened lid to fit it separately. A decent size tank for one leopard gecko is anywhere from 20-30 gallons long. Height doesn't matter as much as floor space with leos, since they're terrestrial geckos.
@@laurelily My gecko is probably about 11 inches long, and maybe about 2 inches wide from his middle section. Leos can get anywhere form 8-11 inches long, however the males tend to be bigger. Specially bred giant leopard geckos can get up to 12 inches long.

Question: Can you fake night? If you keep your leopard gecko in darkness during daytime and light during nighttime, can you trick them to be active during daytime, so you don't have to bother their sleep to take them out during the day?
not really, because as soon as you take them out during the day, then they're sort of exposed to daylight lol. It's best to leave them during the day and handle them after 6pm.

If I understood correctly, If one uses a UVB light, then they DO NOT need to provide synthetic D3. This means that they just have to provide calcium without D3 and multivitamins without D3.

Sara Crawford I Dont think they sell them in stores,Most people buy them online or in expos.Im pretty sure she uses a VivExotic,however i use a Terrapod vivarium and by far the best vivarium brand i've had.I got mine off of Ebay but im sure you can get them on different websites aswell

chris jones you can get like some sort of fake plant and really lightly spray it in the evening and morning as they’re crepuscular and in the wild would lick the dew of plants and gives them stimulation but just watch the humidity as it should be kept at 30-40%
Tell her that the bare minimum for an adult is a 20 gallon long, and bigger is better. Is it the price she’s concerned about? You can probably find a cheap tank on Craigslist. Or you can get a cheap large plastic tub
If it’s bioactive with a cleanup crew, you don’t need to change it. If it’s not bioactive you can get away with going several months without fully changing it as long as you spot clean.
I live in America and I was was wondering what heat mat, thermostat, and thermometer I should use because I can’t get the Habistat one here. I have a twenty gallon tank and am working on improving it!
Zoo med and Flukers heat mats are good. I power is a good thermostat on Amazon. Any digital thermometer is good. Either one with a probe or a temperature gun, or ideally both. You can also look into overhead heating from a ceramic heat emitter or, even better, a deep heat projector from lightyourreptiles.com.
I want to get a leopard gecko for my birthday (which isn't for a few months), so I'm asking my parents for the gecko and everything it needs. I am also hoping to rescue the gecko. I was going to get a Leopard Gecko. I was going to name it Mushu. My mom found out how long they live and she said she'd get me 2 guinea pigs instead. So in memory of my not so real gecko, I'm naming one Mushu, and the other Luna.
Katelin Alpaca aww it's unfortunate that you can't get a leo they are a great pet to have. The long life of them does make some people not want them so don't be mad at your mom for saying no at least you got two pets instead of one, they may not be as cool as gecko's but guinea pigs are still a great pet to have maybe when you get older you can get a leo.😁
awww well if you still really want one when you're older then you can get one and by that point you'll know you really really want it, so you'll be a bit more ready to look after it for 20+ years lol. Guineas pigs are awesome too :)
I tend to refer to leopard geckos as nocturnal vampires! Opportunity is part of their night to night life. My snow albino geckos is a monster come nightfall. I love him but I can't help but fear that bearded dragons owners are actually indifferent to leopard geckos owners...
OK, I've got paladarium, and two geckos, my smaller one isn't eating(that I've noticed) the larger one loves to hunt crickets. The one that won't eat, I've tried hand and tweezers feeding him meal worm, reptiboost vitamins, and I'm starting really worry about him/her (can't tell). Do you have any suggestions?
thank you for all these great videos! You practically saved my gecko! I got her from a pet shop near mine, but they gave us the completely wrong setup! I didn't know so much about that before, but I knew about them enough that the vivarium was a terrible setup! The light was about 4 inches away from the floor, it was getting close to 43 c as well! The sand they filled the tank with was infested with ants, and I mean infested, they were so much, it looked like the sand was moving. she had a poor cooling space since the light was covering the whole tank. I can go on for ages how bad it was. But you helped me fix the setup, and make her become a healthy gecko!! So I thank you very much!

Currently, I have a heated mat for my gecko pet Nero (his name is from demon slayers bird). I saw a video that if you tape the thermometer directly inside the tank without substrate it will have a high reading is this true?. If I place the substrate on top then place the thermometer wouldn't that be a better read in degrees of temperature? what is the remaining temperature of the inside tank need to be? under mat 85-90 degrees Fahrenheit is my current heated mat temp with the substrate on top. If I do decide to use the UVB for additional heat to ensure ambient temp is at a good degree do I turn off the light at night? I ask because it's getting cold pretty soon and I want to prepare for when it gets very cold at night during the winter. I generally have my home at a 78-degree overall temp but I want to ensure all measures are met for my new gecko enclosure. Additionally, if I do turn the heat off at night to have proper circadian for Nero is the heated mat enough heat? I only have 1 thermometer at the moments so I'm assuming I need to buy 2 thermometers? one for the heat mat and one for the ambient temp? In the event I do need to buy extra supplements I will but for the moment I only have repashy superfood calcium plus which says it has calcium and vitamins.

Larkin Willis use a Tupperware container, big enough for the leopard gecko to turn around and move a bit. It may seem small, but putting it in a large container is dangerous as the gecko can be tossed around and get injured. Obviously make sure that the lid has plenty of holes and use paper towel as substrate in the container. Hope that helps!
I just moved my geckos upstairs.. My parents told me that wince they're in my room, I can decide mostly everything for them now.. Except for the damn substrate which is all we need to fix. (And the heatlamp.)
Heat lamps are good for leopard geckos as long as they’re the right type of bulb and regulated by a dimming thermostat. What substrate are you currently using? Are your geckos housed together?
@@beautifuldisaster1336 switch to paper towel immediately. After, good options include reptisoil or a top soil/playsand mix. Your geckos will most likely fight sooner or later. I have seen countless cases of geckos seeming fine for years, then snapping and seriously injuring or killing each other. It’s only safe to cohab in a very large tank. I’m talking 4x2x2’ or bigger. Try giving them more time to adjust when separated. They’re most likely just adjusting to the change.
@@moonlark5039 The problem is, my parents won't let me switch. I tell them to use eco-earth or paper towels, but they refuse. Also, we don't have anything to seperate them in.. And definitely not enough room for that big of a tank.

A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option, Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option. They produce infrared A and B like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively. Whereas heat mats only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin. Also, I’d get a bigger enclosure. 90x45x45cm or bigger is ideal.

Just some advice: Overhead heating is far more natural and beneficial than heat mats. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the best option. They produce infrared a and b like the sun, allowing for deep tissue heating. Whereas heat mats only produce infrared c, the least natural and beneficial type of heat. Reptile carpet is not a suitable substrate. It’s unnatural, harbours bacteria, tends to get caught on their teeth and claws, and doesn’t offer any digging enrichment whatsoever. Quarantine on paper towel for the first six weeks to monitor their health. After, zoo med’s reptisoil or a mix that’s 60% organic top soil without fertilizer and 40% playsand are both good options. Although tree fern fibre is much more environmentally sustainable if you can find it. Make sure the thermometer is digital, not analog. Temperature guns are best for surface temps. Also don’t forget a calcium supplement.
You might be able to get multivitamins from websites online. Give your gecko a variety of live feeder insects and feed the insects lots of nutritious veggies.

this video is quite old but i would appreciate if anybody that has had a leopard gecko for quite a while replied to this; wild you recommend the 20 gallon tanks from Petco? because all the other tanks i see are $140 and it is too expensive.
Keep in mind that a 20 gallon long is only the bare minimum for an adult, 40 gallons or bigger is strongly recommended. Check secondhand sites for cheap used tanks. I believe Petco also often has $1 per gallon sales.
The bio dude’s products are only available in the US. She lives in the UK, and uses Arcadia earth mix arid (which is great for plants). Besides, the bio dude’s products are overpriced. You can just use organic top soil or reptisoil. Some people (like me) just aren’t good at keeping plants alive.

Hi, I have a question! In the process of setting up a leopard gecko enclosure. I have a heat mat, a thermostat & probe thermometer. Been monitoring the heat for a few days before I bring “yoda” home! Here’s my question- the liner I put down for now is temporary, I don’t care for it it’s a faux moss mat so it’s like a fleece material and I’m finding it’s shedding fuzz all over, which I feel will be unsafe. so I ordered reptile carpet instead. But in the meantime I have the probe under the liner on top of the heat mat. The thermometer is reading a temp of 90, however I am curious to know if that heat is coming through the liner. Because when I put my hand over the heated area I barely feel any heat coming through. This liner I have is quite thick so maybe that will change when I get the new reptile carpet but my concern is that even though the heat pad seems to be omitting enough heat if my gecko is laying on the heat pad in his hide will he be actually feeling the adequate heat from it. Let me know what you think..I also have an analogue thermometer & hygrometer on the opposite side of the tank, they came with the tank so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to have more readings and they are on the humid side. Just want to ensure yoda has everything he needs! My other question quickly is that the tank I have came with a terrarium canopy for light, & didn’t come with bulbs. I know the light is solely for viewing purposes, but I have no idea what bulb would be appropriate. I’ve been watching video after video & researching as much as I can, but I really want to make sure I get the right bulb that’s not going to create any more heat or be too bright or harm him in anyway. Any recommendations would be appreciated the tank I have is an exoterra 12 x 12 front closure tank, and the canopy is considered “compact mini” and claims to take a 26w fluorescent or 25w incandescent bulb. Are those safe? This enclosure is temporarily going to be used until he gets larger & I can find a better spot to set up the tank with adequate electricity & day light etc. I know the small size is not ideal for long term.
It’s normal for the warm side to feel cool to you considering humans have a body temperature of 98. I don’t recommend reptile carpet, it catches their teeth and claws and harbours bacteria. Paper towel is good for quarantine for the first six weeks and under six months. Reptisoil, organic top soil, or a bioactive substrate is good over six months for digging enrichment. Analogs are very inaccurate. LED lighting would be fine
Hey, I know this is an old video but I'm confused. I have room darkening curtains because I thought sunlight was bad for my leopard gecko because they sleep during the day. She wasn't sleeping during the day so I put the curtains in but you said they need sunlight to distinguish night from day, what should I do I need help :(
Open the curtains during the day. Leopard geckos need a day/night cycle: light during the day and darkness at night. They need a light source, whether it’s indirect light from a window or a light on their enclosure.
My Leo is coming up 4 years old now and I've kept him in the same viv since I got him, it's just short of 2ft, it's actually 1ft 11 inches, do you think it would be best to get him a bigger a viv? I mean he seems happy as he normally does but not really sure if I should get him a bigger viv or not worth it? Thanks
Hopefully this isn’t too late for you to answer this, but what is the maximum amount of hides I should give my gecko? I have 1 full grown gecko in a 20 gal tank with 5 hides. Is that too much for my gecko? I know too much space kind of stressed your gecko out so I filled in most of that space with hides.
I suggest taking one out more room for it to hunt and walk around in I’m sure you know this but just to make sure have a humid hide hot hide and cool hide
Got a leopard Gecko last night and bought a tank that came.with a set up kit with two lamps. There was no heat map provided. Sorry this might sound like a silly question but do you need to have the day/night lamps running 24/7? I feel uncomfortable leaving them on while we are out of the house. Is it possible to use just a heat map and no lamps?
I've looked everywhere on the net, where should I place my hydrometer and can I turn off my ceramic heating bulb at night . I use a under the tank heat mat but with the ceramic bulb just to regulate my gecko's humidity. It brings it down from 50% to 30%. Both, full spectrum lighting is ideal. UVB is highly beneficial and enables them to produce their own d3 to absorb calcium. UVB bulbs produce UVA as well. Arcadia’s shadedweller is good. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial heat source since they produce infrared A and B like the sun.

They also need: -the enclosure (ideally 40 gallons or larger) -calcium and multivitamin supplements -climbing enrichment/plant coverage -a suitable substrate (after quarantining on paper towel for the first three months, a soil/sand or soil/sand/clay mix is best) -to elaborate on the thermometer part: you need a temperature gun to measure surface temps, and a digital thermometer/hygrometer combo to measure ambient temps and humidity -dimmer or dimming thermostat to prevent the lamp from overheating -it’s recommended to have at least three hides: warm, cool, and humid -tube UVB bulb (they can live without it but it’s very beneficial) -spray bottle -feeding tongs (optional)

Get her checked out at an exotic vet to make sure she doesn’t have parasites. Feed her lots of live crickets and/or roaches. You can use different types of worms for variety. Taming-wise: leave her alone for at least a week. Then start by hand feeding and putting your hand in the enclosure daily. See if she’ll climb onto your hand. Be patient. Just spot clean whoever you see poop. The substrate doesn’t need to be changed often, you can go months without changing it. If you bioactive you’ll never need to clean or change the substrate.
