I did it! I got new sheep, this time Katahdin sheep. Last week I picked up these new sheep, and I'm so excited to begin my journey raising Katahdin rams out for meat this year. Here's everything you need to know about what to have ready to go before you bring your first sheep home.
Happy homesteading!

ABOUT THE HIGH MOUNTAIN HOMESTEAD
Hi! I’m PJ, and my family loves the homesteading life! It’s something my wife and I have always wanted to do, but we grew up with ZERO HOMESTEADING EXPERIENCE!!!!!
We grew up in beautiful southern California, 15 minutes away from the beach. As amazing as that was, we both dreamed of a life closer to land and animals. After getting married and moving to Utah, our family slowly grew. We had become a family of four living in a townhome with a small backyard filled with potted plants.
In 2019 we dipped out feet into homesteading on 1 ¼ acre lot in Utah. In 18 months we were ready to do this for real. So in 2021 we packed everything up (including our sheep) and moved to North Carolina to 12 acres and we love every inch of our homestead!
We raise Dorper sheep and have big plans for:
• grass-fed lamb
• fullblood Dorper breeding stock
• meat chickens
• laying chickens and ducks
• heritage breed pork
• honey
• row crops
• perennial food forest
• and more
I hope you join us on our journey, subscribe and ring the bell if you haven’t yet.

How odd. I just brought home two female and one young ram Katahdins! I'm gonna raise them for meat and turn my two girls into milkers! They're settling in just fine and seem happy and healthy. Can't wait to make them my friends!

@@skazzwag8 At least my animals are raised in the fresh air and sunshine with the best food and tons of love... I care for them and in turn, they provide my family with sustenance. You must have been indoctrinated to believe that eating meat is bad. That's okay. People will believe the darnedest things...especially when they're fed lies and ridiculous falsehoods before their brain's are mature. You'll grow up and eventually come to realize that homegrown livestock that are processed for food is not only humane, but necessary for true health of humans. Do you know that plants scream? Do you have any idea how many insects, rabbits, snakes, and turtles are killed when a large field is harvested by machines? You prolly don't, so your ignorance is forgiven. I suggest you visit a family farm and then a feed lot and then an industrial ag operation before you make silly, childish judgements.

One day, yes! I'd love to have my own little mutt flock of Katahdin, St. Croix, Dorpers. I think that would be really cool.

Hey PJ! Exciting! Congrats! One thing I’d also suggest is to have some antibiotics on hand to watch for Pasteurellosis. In freshly weened lambs up to 10 months of age, unless the are vaccinated, the stress of weaning, transporting, new diet etc along with the time of year, spring/summer, make them susceptible to the bacterial infection that can quickly kill them, often without much warning. I’ve personally been through this when purchasing young ewe lambs, seemed fine at the place of purchase, to get them home and have to quickly treat with antibiotics after diagnosing the problem. So, I would always recommend to have the appropriate antibiotics readily available when purchasing young lambs, just in case.

Yes, I always find that I wish I had stuff when I need it, rather than scrambling the day something goes wrong.

I was ready to get goats... Till I looked at the fat content of the meat. So sheep it is.

Yeah, goat mean is LEAN. I feel like you need to put in some lard or something to get goat meat to stick together enough just to make a burger patty.

How are the sheep doing?
@homesteadingwithPJ
@homesteadingwithPJ Год назад
Good so far. Still very skittish of me, making them hard to move. But I'm moving about every 10 days now. So it's not too intensive. They are my easiest enterprise!

I have been waiting to see a video of how things were going. My husband and I just bought 3 ewes (6months old) and two rams (4months old). All but one ram and one ewe are so sweet and want their neck rubbed. I love having them. We are in Northern NY at the Canadian border. Love your videos. I followed your advise about the chicks and it’s working out great. We also acquired at about the same time, 2 goats, 27 chicks, 9 ducks, 5 Guinea hens, and 2 geese. Thanks for all the videos!

How do you keep your sheep protected from predators?
@homesteadingwithPJ
@homesteadingwithPJ 5 месяцев назад
We've been lucky. Just a fence has done the trick. There's loads of good dogs around me, and I have to think that this keeps some coyotes away. But we haven't lost any to predation (knock on wood).

Why you only get rams if your going to raise a new round of sheep won’t you need someone ewes?
@homesteadingwithPJ
@homesteadingwithPJ 11 месяцев назад
All I want is meat. Buy cheap rams, raise them out for meat and then I don't have to deal with breeding, lambing, and most parasite issues. This is good for small scale producers who just want some meat for their family. Eventually, I'll raise sheep again.
