I just had to push a 2012 Ford Expedition out of the road while it sat blocking traffic. After watching this video and knowing we couldn’t take the console apart, we checked the owners manual. It explained what to do if it wouldn’t come out of park on the “transmission” pages. There is a little rectangle peg to the right of the shift. Pop that out using a small knife or screwdriver. Under that plastic piece is a switch. Just flip it up and you will be able to get it out of park
Thanks for this video. I have a 2010 Expedition that was having the same issue (not coming out of park).. I followed your steps, cleaned and regreased the solenoid plunger and now it works better than it ever has. Thanks again.
Thank you for watching out auto repair video that shows you how to get your Ford Expedition up ang going if the brake interlock switch has the shifter stuck in park. If the parking brake switch is bad it will cause this to happen. We have a video on how to replace the brake light switch if your is bad. Hope this helps you out.
Thank you very much. It took me a few times to watch You but you were very patient as my husband used to be with me and so I learned from you. I'm 73 but I still learned something new today and I found what the problem was. It's where you showed the grease and stuff. Mine is all plastic, it's not metal, but there's a little tab. And it looks like it's a upside down stairs That shifter comes down and that little tab is supposed to go forward. And it didn't so I just ordered me a whole assembly. And I'm going to do R & R , thank you again. For now i push it forward to release the shifter 😊

Great information. Worth mentioning that when your addressing an issue on the Ford Expedition, the Lincoln Navigator is a direct cousin and most components, including the shifter mechanism, are identical. The trim removal is slightly different, but very similar. Sounds like the preventative maintenance procedure to avoid this problem is insuring there is adequate lubrication on the solenoid tab. If your in there for something, such as replacing the shift indicator lamp, check and re-grease that tab.

Great video!! Thank you so much for posting!! It helped my husband and I out tremendously!! We can’t get our car in for 2 days so this has helped us get around for the time being!
It is common for the brake light switch to fail on these trucks causing this issue to happen. Keep an eye on the brake lights especially if it happens again. I have a video that shows you how to replace the brake light switch on a Ford Expedition if it is bad on your truck. Hope this helps you out.
My 2012 Expedition wouldn't shift out of park and I found this video. As luck would have it, the example on the video was my exact same SUV. I followed the instructions, cleaned the area, added grease and the problem was fixed. You saved me a lot of time, money and frustration and I can't thank you enough for taking the time to post this.
If it keeps happening it might be the brake light switch causing the issue. They tend to fail on these trucks. If you’re foot is on the brake and the shifter is stuck see if the brake lights are lit up. If not the brake light switch may be bad. A new one from Ford is only light 25.00 here’s a video on how to replace it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JPUFlrnw-eI.html
I have this also happen with Ford crown Vic shifter. I couldn’t get it out of park and couldn’t get it into park all the way. My mechanic said this is a issue with fords. Thanks for the video I will file it in the brain pan for future use
Edit: It took me about 15 minutes to change out the brake light switch on my 2008 Expedition - you have to poke your head way under the dash, sitting outside the car. It just twists on and off, the wire harness was easy to disconnect and reconnect. Here i Q1 2022 the switch cost $35 with tax from Autozone - ouch. Original: You saved my bacon. A neighbor of mine called me up for exactly this problem on his chevy sedan about 4 months ago, I youtubed the problem, and disassembled the console to get at the guts and do a work around. Well, a couple of weeks ago I was out in a fairly rural area, away from help, and my 2008 Expedition locked up. I jumped on youtube with my phone, found your video, and was rolling 20 minutes later. Thanks.
If you look at your shifter trim you will see a small rectangular panel on the passenger side towards the front. Pop that out and stick your key in the hole. It releases the shifter with no disassembly needed
Check to see if your brake lights are working. If the brake light switch is bad it will cause this issue. Mine were working intermittently. I have a video on how to replace the brake light switch it is super easy.

Thanks! I have been having to press the brake pedal harder to get it to go into gear, this likely is the issue! We haven't been stuck yet..... Also, today the wrench 🔧 light came on, so, now I need a code read....

Hi, thank you for this video. Can you explain where exactly is that part at @5:19 please ? do you have to crawl under the vehicle ? or is it somewhere inside the vehicle, under the console you just dismounted ? Thank you, I'm experiencing this right now
If you can't take the truck out of park this may be the issue. If the parking brake switch is bad (see if your brake lights are working) if not you may want to replace the brake light switch.
Dealing with this crap now!! UGH!! Thanks for the info!! Also Mike Skibba helped with the info about the rectangle peg to the rt of the shift!! About to try that!
Thanks for watching. See if the brake lights on the truck are working intermittently. If they are the brake light switch might be bad causing the truck to not shift out of park. It's a common problem but cheap to fix. Here is a video I did on the brake light switch. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JPUFlrnw-eI.html
Dude, you did this the hard way. There is no need take any of the console apart, just pop the little rectangular cover off that is next to the shift handle and stick your key in there. That will manually unlock the shift handle. It literally takes 10 seconds.
One of the most common causes of this problem is a blown fuse. 97 to 02 expedition is a BOO fuse. Brake On Off fuse. It is the feed for a splice that includes you shit actuator solenoid and your brake light switch. It is Fuse 13 on the 98 Expedition. Mine did this in a fast food drive through. It was ugly. I remembered the F150 I did a few months earlier. Grabbed a spare 15 Amp and boom. It was fixed. No need to take anything apart.

found out from my mechanic that the solinoid is actuated by your brake light switch. if it wont unlock shifter you also wont have brakelights. $29 at parts store, swaps out without tolls in 5 minutes, aon top of brake pedal.
That's what happened to mine. Here is a video on how to replace the brake light switch. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JPUFlrnw-eI.html
Dude I really appreciate this video. You really saved my ass brother. I normally don’t comment or look things up but I had to thank you man. Literally saved my life i was stuck in the boondocks waiting for an ambulance and needed to get to the hospital asap. Really man THANK YOU !!!! I owe you a beer man message me so we can meet up or i can ship you a beer lol
Glad this helped you out. Check to see if the brake light switch is failing once in a while. If it is, it will cause that switch not to release up on the shifter. This is what happened to mine, it's common on these trucks. Here is a link to a video that I did on how to replace the switch. It's easy to do if yours is bad. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JPUFlrnw-eI.html
Thanks. I bet this will work. I just went out to go to work and can't push the button so it's something I'll try when I get home from work. I knew one day a stupid brake-interlock would get me. I know after this, it will never again. Wink wink.
It's common on these trucks to have the brake light switch fail which causes this issue. When it happens see if the brake lights are not coming on. I would see if the new switch has gone bad, also check for a frayed wire coming off of the brake pedal switch, you can also want to see if that little slide pin in the shifter may need to be lubricated or if the solenoid to it might be bad. Hope this helps you out.
If you’re in a pinch, turn the key to accessory and start the car in neutral. Make sure to depress the brake but once you have it started you should be good to shift to drive. Thanks
Hello Sir I have a 2018 expedition. I could start the car but suddenly when I put it to Drive, it turned off and I never could start it again. The gear is very hard. And it shows brake system malfunction on the screen. Any idea what can be the problem?
You may want to start with the basics. Check the brake fluid level to see if it is at the correct level. Also check the fuse to see if there is a blown fuse in the brake circuit that may be triggering the code. You could also have someone put a code an ODB code reader on it to see if there is a stored coded in the system that should point you in the direction as to what might be causing the issue. Hope this helps you out.
The grease that's in there is almost like Vaseline. What happened to me is my brake light switch was working intermittently (common on these trucks) which caused this issue. I have a video on how to replace it if your brake light switch is failing,
Opposite issue: stuck in gear. Went to turn around and stuck in reverse. Foot on brake thinking about the interlock being stuck and could not get it. Tried turning off and it did but because of the truck in gear would not start. Forcing the shift lever I got into neutral and started. Made it home and can't get keys out when in oark. Vehicle shuts off but doesn't allow key to release. Then I got out and noticed my lights are on and won't turn off because keys are in the ignition.
Check to see if the brake light switch is going bad. If it is it will not release the interlock. Very common problem on these trucks. It's a cheap part and a five minute fix. Here is a video I did on the repair. My brake lights were working intermittently. Hope this helps you out. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JPUFlrnw-eI.html
mine look just like yours...I hope you can help me. Mine....the gear is not stuck but when I shift to drive my car doesn't move at all even Reverse nothing. It starts and running but just not move. I don't know what is the problem but it's my only car and don't have the money to take it to a shop.. please help.
You may want to start by checking the transmission fluid level. Here is a video that explains how to do it on these trucks. Mine has the 5.4 in it. Hope this helps you out.

Why didn't you just pop off the access button? You took the whole oabelling apart for no reason.. just pop off the little dime sized button next to the shifter and stick something down in there to push the release button
Tried that but it didn't work on my Expedition. The brake light switch was causing this issue on my truck. I have a video that shows you how to replace the brake light switch on a Ford Expedition if it goes bad.
Don't spill soda on your console. It will drip through the cracks onto the mechanisms inside and make them super sticky. That is what happened to me and was a real pain to clean!
on the other side of that solenoid is a round shaft. I 3d printed a clip to go on that shaft to disable it forever. Its a safety device so kids don't put it in gear without the brake. I don't have little kids. All adults. So I don't need it.
I am pretty sure you need the shift assembly from Ford if the solenoid is bad. The brake light switch is known to go bad on these trucks it's a common issue which causes the shifter to be locked in park. I have a video on how to replace it. When the shifter gets stuck in place keep your foot on the brake pedal and see if the brake lights are coming on, if they are not it might be a bad brake light switch. Hope this helps you out.
This happened to me. And I drove the car for about a week and the break locked and I end it up in a ditch because I codnt get the car to stop. The mechanic changed the booster and viola my car works now. Everyone please take your car to a professional. It's locking for a reason.
When the brake pedal is pressed it activates the brake light switch which sends a signal over to the interlock on the shifter. The booster failing is a different issue.

You had to take your car apart to do this, my father had to get a rental truck because his own needs some body work done and his rental truck is a 2019 Chevy Silverado and it is faster than his and it even has CarPlay so he can control his iPhone from the stereo
HomeownerRepair You’re welcome have you ever used CarPlay before , my dad can control his iPhone from the stereo in his rental truck without touching it
