There is a little access tab in the bottom of the front cup holder that you can pry open with a screwdriver and press the actuator down. Remove the black cup holder insert to access it. This at least lets you move the vehicle.
This was SOOO helpful.... I had this problem multiple times. I replaced the actuator and slide piece and still kept having the same problem. Would have to turn the car off, remove key, restart it a few times before it would let the shifter move. Think to replace that circuit board below.

Thank you very much for this video. I am currently having this issue and thought it was due to some problem with transmission. My parking brake does have worn out and I was parking the truck just with the shifter in P. HOwever many times the vehicle rolls a little after this and I thought this was causing the lever to get stuck. Now will check this and will post my findings here. hope I will havesome good news to share.
Always glad to help. I have found that this particular vehicle just hates having pressure against the transmission when in park. We parked on a hill once, not too steep, without the parking brake on and almost couldn't get it out of park. We had to rock the vehicle to relieve the pressure. So it sounds like it is not this switch for you, but the fact that this Explorer doesn't like pressure on the Park. So I would advise you to get that parking brake fixed and avoid parking on any hills in the meantime. So glad to help! Thank you for watching. Great job. I wish I would have watched this before I watched the other video on doing it without removing the entire console as I broke the little black connector next to the white one that is facing towards the front of the Explorer. So pissed lol.
Thanks so much for this video! i was able to bypass the module and get it back into gear. now i wont have to call a tow truck which saves me some money. the thing is, after getting it back into gear its shifting into gear normally again!? therefore im going to "drive", not have it towed to my local mechanic so he can diagnose whether its actually the module or the little black motor/switch thingy. i believe i could probably do the job myself but it does look kind of tedious so thats why im taking it my local mechanic to do it. at any rate thanks again for the video ! Same thing happened to me where I was stuck. Thanks for showing me how to bypass it, and that it was searchable. My 2006 XLT will be driven to my mechanic to help fix the broken Male end on the chip.
in my car a trick i learned was to hit unlock/ lock about 10 times on the key FOB and that usually works, not sure why. I too was afraid of how much a shop would cost to fix it
Fixed mine and he's right, don't see any way of doing this without removing the console. Taking the console out was no big deal, took about 20 min. Once the console is out, no problem.

Parking on an incline or Hill can also cause your Explorer to be stuck in park if you don't park with the emergency brake on. This causes the transmission to hold the vehicle in place which is not good for it. First thing to check is am I parking on a hill or incline? Without the emergency brake off?

For mine, I pushed in the emergency brake and released it then moved fine. Hope that helps someone out. I was almost stranded in the walmart parking lot lol
A different issue with a very similar symptom on my 2005 dodge magnum where the stupid pink plastic piece in the shifter broke because it should have been metal in the first place. Thankfully Doorman makes a metal replacement part. For your issue would conformal coating the replacement part keep this from reoccurring ?

I know this video was posted a few years ago but it just helped me fix my truck. But what's the name of the part that I need to replace so that I don't have to put it in reverse by hand..
My problem is I have to move the shifter to the next setting down, in order to be in the right gear. (Example: moving the shift out of "Park" works fine but to get it in "Reverse", I have to set it in "Neutral". Is this also a circumstance that would require the install of the Shift Interlock Module ?? I did indeed have some water leak down through the cup holder area.
I turn the key over to auxiliary but I do not start the car at this point. So with the automobile in auxiliary I shift the gear shifter into neutral, leave it in neutral and go ahead and start the automobile. They I shift it into Drive or reverse, whichever direction you want to go in. This way the shifter doesn't lock up.
How long can I drive it like this? My broke yesterday and I was able to fix it ,but can't take it to the mechanic until this weekend because of work,but I'm afraid to drive it around.
I don't really have enough info here. You said it was broke and you fixed it, but you can't take it to the mechanic yet. If the solenoid will not disengage, but you have opened it up so that you can manually release it so that you can move the shifter then you can drive it around for as long as you don't mind manually releasing it.
I had temporarily parked in a tow zone to drop something off on my way to work, and it would not shift!I tried everything to unstick it until finally I just yanked the damn thing into reverse and I was able to get to work.i have to yank it from park every time now but in an emergency.... screw it! Not something I wanted to do,and as soon as I get the sensor I'm going to fix it........hopefully.
I love the video but I cant get my floor console off to get to the module. I unscrewed ALL the screws and the console moves but HOW in the world did you get the floor console removed after you took all the screws out. Is there other connectors that I need to unplug to get it out?
This was a couple of years ago so I don't completely remember. Also it is really hard to try and shoot the video when you yourself don't know what you are doing just yet. I talk about the additional bolts @ 5:20 in the video. Then there are the side panels @ 5:40 that have to come loose. I would double check all these things. It is easy to miss just one that is keeping it from moving. Then I lifted up and back to pull it out from the back of the vehicle. I hope that helps.

The part that I have listed is the most common one carried by the parts stores. I'm sorry to hear that it is not working for you. It, can of course be defective. Though you are right. If you can move the shifter then it is not relative to this. Wait, but is it sometimes you can't get it out of park but other times just fine? I have found this vehicle and it's transmission to be very sensitive to having pressure on it. Meaning, you can't park on an incline and get it out of park. If you park on an incline you need to use the parking break. And most people don't realize the proper way to use a parking break. You should come to a stop, and put the vehicle in neutral. Then apply the parking break and ease off the main brake to make sure the parking break is set and the vehicle is not moving. Then put it in park. This way the parking break is actually holding the weight of the vehicle, not a back up incase the transmission slips and the vehicle wants to roll. And by doing this there is no weight put on the transmission. Most vehicles are not that sensitive to parking on an incline, but I have found that this one really is. I hope that helps you out.

Can you just move the solenoid back and lock it out forever? Since the interlock is a nice thing to have but can be done without it seems like the simplest thing to do.

BEFORE YOU DO THIS OR ORDER THIS PART, make sure that your brake lights are still working. If they are not working, then your problem could be related to the brake light switch. Replacing the brake light switch may also fix THIS problem.

2010 Explorer wont shift out of park. Tried the bypass and still shifter won't move down out of park. Assuming it's a shifter assembly or transmission problem

My has been not shifting out of park. So i turn the key onto just where your vehicles readout come on. Do not turn vehicles motor on. Then i shit it into neutral and start the vehicle and the shift into gear.
You can permanently disable the switch if you wish. I show you what is happening here, how to temporarily keep it working and how to replace it so the vehicle is back stock. Also, it is actually a safety system that I think is good. I don't believe in all safety systems, but keeping children from engaging the transmission is something I think is worthwhile. This module has now crapped out 4 times in 15 years. First 2 times, i had a mechanic do it at about $450 a pop. 3rd one, i did myself for a $30 part. Here we go again. Ford should do a recall on this bullshit.
Are you sure that something didn't spill down the cupholder? I have had this vehicle for 16 years and it only happened once after a spill in the cupholder.

What a pain in the Ass. How many lock outs do you need. You have to push the button first to move the shifter. Why do you have to have another lock. I guess people are too stupid to put their foot on the brake. What is next your seat Belt will have to be buckled. And then if your tire pressure is not right it wont work?
