One environmental change I’ve made (this might not me the right word to describe this, but) is carrying around a head AF Country Road bag full of the shit I need to do (gym clothes for exercise, water for drinking, text books to study), and I’m constantly being reminded of what I need to do, either by the weight or ferreting around in it for what I need. It’s soooo heavy, so bulky, and so annoying. It sounds like punishment, and I suppose it is, but I’m getting to the gym 100 per cent more than what I was when I didn’t have it.

It’s all about behaviors. When you first start something new, there’s a lot of pulling rather than pushing. When people try kicking a bad habit, they’re often met with a lot of resistance because the paradigm. However, if you keep doing it over and over, it becomes a habit and will be placed in the auto-pilot column with the rest of the things we do u consciously like showers and brushing our teeth.

@dumbcat

One thing that helps is to think about what you want. What is it that you want to accomplish? Keep thinking about that thing. Keep thinking about it. The more you think about it the more your desire for it will build, until your desire becomes a burning desire that compels you to take action and overwhelms your desire to be lazy.
@jojoj3056
@jojoj3056 6 лет назад
Not if you implement the advice and take action. First thoughts, then action. Repetitive, persistent, goal-oriented action equal habits, however thoughts and a plan always come first so the videos can assist in that. However, all videos and no action is procrastination!!! Lol!!!

I'd suggest resolving to do only one push-up every time, say, for a week. Perhaps up the number of triggers, not push-ups per se. It'll feel ridiculous, but it's super easy to do BEFORE you fall asleep on the ground. And when you eventually increase the number, don't go straight to 50, as that'll bring you back to square one, in terms of mental resistance. Just do tiny gradual increases. I realized that the "all-or-nothing" mentality was a driving factor in my procrastination problem when I would look back at a wasted day *coughweekcough* and realize that, if I had spent only a small ridiculous amount of time per day I would STILL have been in a better position moving forward. Yet my perfectionism/pride was stopping me from doing these "too small" and "meaningless" efforts that would have opened the door for further improvement down the line, because I had this stupid notion that I HAD to do productive work in 4 hour blocks at a time, and without any gradual build-up. Just a personal observation.

I remember coming home one night after bombing an exam the week before my final. I was stressing out because I was going into my final with a failing grade. Any how, that night I binge watched every one of your study tips videos and I swear they helped me pass my final and every test thereafter. Now here I am a Nurse ready to start my new position at the hospital tomorrow! Gonna definitely apply this videos tips to my new career. Thank you my brotha! You are much appreciated! 😁🤙🏽

I was actually struggling with this for a long time and here is my solution to the problem: I have a list of things I have or want to do daily (often), weekly, monthly or infrequently. And every evening I plan 3 - 6 of these activities for the next day. The planning takes 2 minutes, I do it on my phone before sleep. Also, I have rated each activity as Cognitively, Physically or Socially exhausting and I try not to have more than 2 of the same type for the next day. This system works for me well. I use it to plan my free time (or rather not-job time). Recently I also added routines. E.g. whenever I am leaving my computer, I bring the place to its original state (basically clean the place), or morning/evening routine. These help me build some automatisms in my life and sort of works like your ifs - if I do this, then I do that, then I do that, than the routine is done...

This is kind of embarrassing of me but I have very unhealthy habits and things I'm not willing to do because of laziness and I'm 14. I was brought up in a less then happy household and never learned basic things. So, now, who I'm living with is shaming me for not showering regurally and forgetting to brush my teeth, etc. Simple things like that, eating habits, other hygiene stuff, etc. It is so embarrasing but I'm working on it and it's hard because I wasn't brought up (even though I'm still a kid) to do these things. I just felt like sharing this with someone else that has or had similar issues.

Alina Titov I hear you. I’m quite older now but I had to go through a few phases of newfound motivation. For me it was unfortunately things like loss of a loved one (times two) and subsequent phases wearing black everyday for years. And that created a sort of a new / old goth mystique that, along with falling in love and having a good job @ a French restaurant, I was motivated towards healthy self-care. I wish you all the best, early bad starts sux, I know. Take good care of yourself.

Actually that quote is Will Durant’s words in a discussion of Aristotle. “Excellence is an art won by training and habituation: we not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but rather have these because we have acted rightly; these virtues are formed in man by doing his actions; we are we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” - Will Durant, The Story of Philosophy (1926)

One huge thing here is to actually commit to doing the thing. One of my biggest problems with laziness is that the thing that I 'ought' to be doing is something that I'm totally uncommitted to be doing on a psychological level. I am basically caught between not at all being passionate about this career path, and on the other hand not at all wanting to face any alternative path in life either (since I can't imagine being even interested in anything ells). So I'm basically stuck between somewhat interested and utter disinterest. How to then commit to doing the things that I need to do for the career path that I'm only moderatly interested in?

@ThomasSorensen1
@ThomasSorensen1 6 лет назад
This is good advice! It's important to find methods that work for you to encourage your good habits. The If-Then technique is a great idea; for me I think about how I want to be able to describe myself to others. Am I the type of person who goes to the gym? Well I have only been once this week, so not really, I should go today instead of watching another episode. Recently I'll want to quit early, like stopping at 7.5 of my 10k but I'll remember, I've been telling people I do a 10k every other day, if you quit now you'll make a liar of yourself. And so I push through. But whatever works for you! Just remember, no matter how slow you're going, you're still going faster than the guy who's sitting on the couch.

LorvicMeow pomodoro is helpful, kind of like the psychological hiit workout. The key is discipline and working it into routines (or rituals if you like Tony Robbins). Also, to discipline yourself try to do something that keeps your end goal/vision in mind. Vision is fundamental to success

Precommitment works best for me. My partner programmed a "game" where we each set up one goal for ourselves for every row (a total of 10 rows or so for now) and each time we both complete our goal in a specific row, it unlocks a date. And then we go on that date as a celebration \o/ I love it because it combines growing as an individual with growing as a couple and it feels very meaningful.

For me, the biggest challenge for maintaining a habit is "that day"... will come a day that I just don't want do my new habit for whatever reason (being tired, occupied, etc.). This seems to be the key day and it's the day I REALLY need to do it. Failing to do so will lead to more days that I don't want to do it. So, when those days come, I just do my task however I can. I will probably not do it the best I can, may even seem like a waste of time, but I still do it. Easier said than done, I know. But wanted to share it nevertheless.

Awesome piece of advice! For me, the biggest thing I have motivation for is practicing piano. I'm 21 and I've half-assed this established passion of mine for the past 7 years... but lately I've been doing great because I stopped thinking of practicing in terms of "now I have to practice" and instead like "I want to practice now, once I get into it I'll feel great, and I'm chasing my dream of performing in front of hundreds of people" With your advice, I'm gonna put my phone alarm behind my piano in a way that I'll already be seated on the bench while I disable the alarm! :D

Each one of these habit related videos peels back another onion layer on my self control. Eventually I will master it. My next step after this video is to make a program and I will just have it running on my computer and ask it if I can do things like watch youtube. Then it will ask me a series of questions to determine if I'm allowed to do whatever I asked. I can't be responsible for making my own decisions, I have to outsource them to a computer.

Try reading outside, or in a public place like a coffee shop or a library! Above all, don't read in a big comfy recliner or anything like that. I always get sleepy if I try to read on a chair that's too comfortable.

Siwaphat Boonbangyang where are you reading? Your environment is key. Also try using alternative ways in reading, such as reading in shorter, but more intense bursts
@glen___1737
@glen___1737 6 лет назад
Siwaphat Boonbangyang I have to have some kind of background noise while reading. Have something on tv that’s not going to distract you, or what I prefer to do is listen to instrumental music. Pick something that isn’t too loud and distracting, but also don’t choose something that will put you to sleep. This helps me stay focused and create a zone where I can read while being able to stay stimulated enough to not fall asleep.

The if-then solutions really helped me with my studying, I just created one massive chain reaction. At 7:15 my alarm went off to study Chinese, and the app was on my phone so it was easy to just tap on and do it. However, I also keep a book of Chinese characters and I speak out loud to practice so I would go to my room for privacy and my books. When I was done, I was already in my room and at my desk so I would do the rest of my homework after that. Once my homework was done, my keyboard was directly next to me, so I would just set it on my desk to rehearse.

While we're on the topic of Magic the Gathering, what color or colors can you identify most? Judging by the cards seen in this video, as well as this channel's topic, Simic colors seem the most likely: Blue has the analytical approach to come up with a solid plan. Green desires growth while staying aware of one's boundaries. Both combined seek solid progress and self-improvement.

I've been doing the pull-ups-when-entering-a-room thing for a little over a year now, and that too creates a leeway into more training habits. Putting my phone (alarm) in my desk drawer also lets the 20-second rule come into play so I don't want to go back to sleep! Also - I dunno if you'd find this useful, but another way I make training habitual is whenever I put the kettle on I have to do 20 push ups before it's done (then increase the amount in proportion to my increasing strength). Typing it out makes me question how normal it is... Anyway, nice vid!

@RichardHarlos
@RichardHarlos 5 лет назад
Catering to your impatience isn't helpful to you. it only reinforces that impatience, as well as a sense that you have a legitimate gripe. You don't. This video is 8-minutes long. If the topic is important to you and you can't manage 8-minutes of attention (again, for a topic you consider important)... the problem isn't *"3 metaphors before [you] get the key information."* It's your impatience. Period.
@zil7692
@zil7692 5 лет назад
@@RichardHarlos Not if I find the metaphors redundant. Trying to claim the educational high ground doesn't make you look any more informed. The world isn't black or white, important or unimportant. One has to filter information in today's world. This video had me somewhat interested but not so much that I would want to watch through this onslaught of examples; especially since I already watched/ read a decent amount about this topic.
@RichardHarlos
@RichardHarlos 5 лет назад
@@zil7692 , do you suppose this content creator tailors his content to a 'target audience' of people who've _"already watched/ read a decent amount about this topic"_ ? If you do, you suppose incorrectly. Read the channel description to see the 'target audience' this content is created for. Apparently, you're not it. That makes your expectations, as well as your criticism, irrelevant in the context of the target audience. *Context matters.* Also, your allegation that I'm _"Trying to claim the educational high ground"_ is vacuous. Perhaps you enjoy knocking down strawmen, though.
@zil7692
@zil7692 5 лет назад
@@RichardHarlos You may rest satisfied in the knowledge that I never claimed to be a spokesperson for the exact target audience of this channel. Context matters, my friend. I comment from my own perspective. I'd wager that there is a decent amount of people who have a similar impression. Let that be the end of this moderately meaningful discussion, if not we agree to differ.
@RichardHarlos
@RichardHarlos 5 лет назад
@@zil7692 , I never alleged you were speaking as _"a spokesperson for the exact target audience of this channel."_ Another strawman, it seems. What I said is that you were criticizing from the point of view of one who doesn't fit the description of the target audience, and that fact makes your criticism *irrelevant* in the context of the lesson. I'll conclude my participation here with an analogy in the hope that you find it insightful: Imagine you're an experienced firefighter. You sign up for a free seminar tailored to people who are interested in firefighting, but who aren't experienced at it as you are. Your criticism about the video is analogous to you criticizing that seminar for being too basic for you because you've already got a strong foundation in the field. If you'd read who the seminar was for (it's 'target audience'), you likely wouldn't have attended it. Or, if you did choose to attend, you'd (hopefully) realize that criticizing the seminar for being 'too basic [for you]' would be an out-of-context criticism, since that seminar is clearly *not* for experienced firefighters. If you understand that analogy, then you understand why your initial criticism about this video also stands as an out-of-context criticism. If you don't understand the analogy, then I doubt anything else I might share with you would make a difference. Either way, I'm done here. Cheers! :)

These are techniques that certainly make habit change easier. I’ve always been a night owl and now I get up at 5 every morning including weekends, and I was able to do that by using an alarm that makes me take a picture of my bathroom sink (and also over a year of dedication - minor technicality). In my experience, you still need to have a strong why - and the strongest why comes from pain. Change is painful, and the sure way to bring that change about is when not changing becomes more painful than changing. For example I’ve been trying to meditate for years and I keep falling in and out of the habit. As much as I’d like to do it, i don’t have a strong emotional attachment to the habit. On the other hand, I tried to exercise regularly and similarly fell in and out of the habit until I got so sick of letting myself down all the time that showing up at the gym became a necessity. Now I exercise 6 times a week.
