When you’re on console lane mathematics is literally the most important thing in the road management of the game as it stops people from leaving the highway from the middle lane etc

it's kinda hard on console though. we can't really get mods so we are limited to the 1 way 6 lane road, the highway and a 1 way 2 lane road. so the speed of the cars change accordingly to the road type

I'll take that "never let rail lines cross road" and raise you a "never let rail lines cross rail lines." I got into a train-catastrophe in my own city recently, due to the circular trains getting in each other's way so no trains can leave so no trains can enter because no trains can leave because entering trains are in their way... on and on and on it goes, or rather not goes, nobody was going... that was the problem. I had to take all the train lines with 2 way double track crossing over each other and switch them all to 1 way tracks for entrance/exit "ramps" at the junctions with overpasses replacing tracks where trains had to cross each other's paths. Double tracks where there were no intersections were fine, just where the tracks met at a switch track.

@@Seriously_Unserious Yeah I honestly don't make as much use of one way train tracks as I probably should. Most train systems only work due to the low volume of trains you get at each stop. If you can keep your cargo trains on a different line than your passenger ones most problems disappear.

@@JustaGuy_Gaming The challenge with that is if you also want intercity trains, you do need to connect something to the main inter city train network. The main key there is to make sure the trains in and out of the map and your stations can't get in each other's way and have inbound trains blocking outbound trains from even leaving the map with the outbound trains blocking the inbound trains in a catch 22 traffic jam.

@@JustaGuy_Gaming Unless you're dealing with intercity passengers, then your passenger trains from out of town inevitably MUST join the main lines out of town and if they're poorly designed by Colossal Order or whoever made the map, then you're just as screwed anyways as they'll back up and jam up the rest of your internal passenger trains, unless you have your internal trains fully separated from your inter-city trains.

"So we have this train station that has one road serving as entrance and exit to it and traffic was getting bad because of the train tracks crossing the street further down the road. At the council meeting there was a proposal to build a bridge over the tracks, but you know how those penny pinchers are, they reckoned it would be too expensive, so instead they decided to only allow left hand turns down the road and only right hand turns on the other side of the station, effectively abandoning that entire stretch of road crossing the tracks. And on top of this the council is making everyone coming from the motorway that needs to go to the station take a left hand turn with oncoming traffic. It's becoming almost impossible to make it to the train station by car. The only time in the last two months I caught the train on time was when it was delayed, because of the wet leaves on the tracks!" "And there you have it, Municipal Madness at its best! Shut down a road and make people turn left twice instead, sounds like a local council's idea of a solution. When you work on the trains, I like to make T intersection with no asset, on my own. Using one way tracks so they don't cross into each other.

There's an episode of Doctor Who where the traffic is so in New New York City that they spend literal lifetimes in their cars on the freeway. Not sure if that's what you mean.

Lane mathematics: Having a three way highway junction, every lane is a direction, so only three lanes are merging together Biffa lane mathematics: three directions but one get a extra lane, so at the end 4 lanes are merging, so we need a four lane highway which is merging in a three lane highway

I don't like those highway junctions. I'd rather see those two lanes stay separate and each merge onto/off the highway separately with a node between them - you know, spread them out a bit. You'd go from three lanes down to two at the first off ramp, then down to one at the next, then the bit that goes through the junction would only need to be one lane, then back to two at the next on ramp, then back to three at the last one. No need to make it a four lane then.

It looks to me like a big problem with the traffic going to the cargo harbour at the end is that 120-degree turn at the end of the slip road that the trucks are slowing down to walking pace for. Put some smoother curves on there and it won't get rid of the queue but it should ease it a lot.

In some places 85 in Georgia has eight lanes on each side of the highway. Of course it's just lane mathematics where different highways intersect.

There are areas on the NJ Turnpike that are pretty big with the truck only lanes, and the Car+Truck lanes. Utah is another state with pretty insane highways.

Challenge suggestions: 1) Fix a city entirely on pause. Make all your changes in one hit without any reaction from the AI until you think you've done enough. 2) Fix a city without pause at all - no road deletion without first making a temporary bypass of the section being redesigned.

I kinda like seeing a lot of people at my train stations. It shows my Intercity Transportation Project wasnt a complete waste of money. When 10s of thousands of people live in my city and only 7 people are using bus or subway in a highly populated area, it makes me feel like I wasted money to limit traffic and commute time.

My old nemesis? Probably fine. Give it some time to deal with the clog and it should be right.... Otherwise dedicated turning and motorway access only. Connect the input to the major highway, attach the exit to the main entrance. Should sort itself:if not track down the source and add more facilities.

when u have alot of weaving on a highway and u have a ramp with a high trafffic volume but the traffic moves i upgrade it to 2 lanes and make the right lane exit only and the lane next to it able to exit and travel straight on so the AI has more options to exit other than sticking to one lane and building a long Queue NOTE when u do this the highway has to be 3-4 lanes like 2lanes for straight on 1 lane for both movements and 1 for exit only and also when u have weaving between an entrance followed by an exit u can extend the lane from the entrance and go passed the exit and have them stay in there lane in between the two exits and then have them merge past it this will help by having the game AI getting onto the highway doesnt have to deal with multiple streams of traffic or u can build a parellel roadway which will carry the slower moving traffic entering and exiting the highway. all of the traffic tips here are used in realife situations and work in the game very nicely as well... hope this helps

@biffa, in a city in the netherlands (Tilburg) there is actually a house inside a roundabout. It functions as an art project and moves on around on a rail around the roundabout. You'd love it haha

architecture in the Netherlands overall is just amazing, I was only there for 2 days and I everywhere I looked was something cool, amazing, and unique. Buildings with oddly angled walls. Buildings with openings through the middle. Underground parking garage entrances that mimicked the shape of the sand dunes. even the highway sound barriers were artistic and different.

10:08 Didn't level the T-Junction correctly, so the right-to-left road is _really_ close to the water line. 11:35 Could just delete that road after the bridge, crossing the rail lines. The road leading up to the junction with the bridge a bigger 2 lanes, and also make the ramps on both sides longer and also give it 2 lanes

Long time lurker. First time comment. Helpful in my many failed attempts in Cities. But Bkie Paths. Full time cyclist. Bike paths on a roundabout is suicide. Anytime gotta switch sides to follow green line. Same. Best is the solid barrier and parking cars. Someone will still try. Haven't put the hours I have in Transportation Fever 2. Pandemics are great for free time. Cheers.

Don't worry Biffa my widest motorway is 2×6 but it is for the 4 way interchange next to it (to give 2 - lane ramps) but traffic just fits on a 2×3 after an exit. My proper widest motorway is 5+4 = 9 lanes wide before the entrance of the (large!) industrial area. May need to be upgraded to 2×5 in the future.

cities typically take ~100MB, though, i have a drive all to CS, so. a 250GB HDD for CS should be good enough, if not a 500GB SSD.

The lane mathematics thing would look a bit better if you had roads that were physically the same width even if they had fewer lanes, but I'll understand if you can't be bothered setting that up with the asset editor...

Your videos actually made me buy this game -- this, and the fact that it runs under Linux! The problem with getting started though, is that before you start and worry about needs and whatnot, you have to master the game mechanics... In game tutorials for that are cruelly lacking :(

Is it me or does Biffa’s incomplete fixes (like the intersection at 6:00) keep one up at night? Also, with the same junction, the solution that keeps you from putting a four-lane at the end to then merge eventually into three lanes is when the initial off ramp of the intersection starts, you need to make two lanes go off and only one lane go through. Then, you’ll have 1 through + 2 coming on = your standard 3 lane highway

There is a mod, which can set max people on the public transport stations. It makes traffic even worse, but more realistic. Who wants to wait for a train when there are hundreds of other passengers

The Teaport tag is incorrect but he mentions the queue in the outro as something that had to wait till the next episode. At least the poor sods have been noticed at last!

the papi lights at 19:25....why do they generate garbage and need water? xD also, they should be on right side of the runway, not at the end of it, but the game is not about this, so it really doesn't matter as it doesn't affect anything

I am guessing the traffic flow percentage is based on available lanes / volume. Thus, if you have 6 lane roads everywhere but the Teaple only use one lane, then the percentage would be low. I have no source to confirm this other than watching 100 Biffa videos.

Biffa are you going back to build on the Arcology map? I am enjoying these and Teaport, I’ve been on the edge of my seat for weeks wondering if today is the day Biffa builds a port in Teaport. But just wondering if that is something you will continue?

Wouldn't just a 1 lane be enough down the middle at 3:20 taking the 2 lanes of correcting the math ? Same for the 6:00 one.

I think the cause of most traffic problems in this city are actually the train lines - they back up and then block the level crossing, stopping the traffic.
