In Norway we "pant" or drinking bottles. If a bottle water is 2 dollars and 20 cents, the 20 cents would be the pant (usually it's between 10-25 cents depending on the size of the bottle). After a while you will have a bunch of these bottles saved up, and that's when the pant comes in use. Because in our food stores we have a machine that takes back all these bottles, before they are sent for recycling, and when you pant your bottle you get back the pant you paid (10-25 cents). Therefore more people recycle.

They do it in Sweden, Denmark and (I think) Germany too. Probably other places in Europe as well. In Denmark, the Pant system has recently been expanded, so they now accept almost all kinds of bottles of cans even if they don't have the Pant logo on them.

Its really easy to clean lotion and conditioner out of a bottle if you put in a bit of water and a bit of dish soap and shake it around. The sodium laurel sulfate in the dish soap will break down the silicones in the lotion or conditioner (typically dimethicone). Silicones are hydrophobic which is what makes them so difficult to rinse away.
@classycassie1118
@classycassie1118 6 лет назад
Pour some hot water into the bottles. Shake them up. Dump water out. Repeat until water runs clear. Boom! Clean bottles that can now be recycled. Good to know about the orgins thing.
@lawa3295

Cassie Best Ever! I don't know how it works in other countries, but in Germany you explicitly should not wash your plastics. Just because the impact to the environment due to the waste of water is worse than letting them be cleaned during the recycling process. Same applies to using a dishwasher instead of doing the dishes by hand. The dishwasher cleans far more effectively.

You're right. Since even shampoos contain chemicals that are not environment friendly, using that last bit ensures there is less product used. Because its one more time you didn't use a new bottle. That is another way to care for the environment.

Buy a pair of strong scissors. Cut the container open. Use the rest of the product, then recycle the container. Simple. For shampoo/conditioner/body wash, even simpler. When only a bit of product is left, dilute with water and after 1-2 more uses, rinse and recycle. Also, recycling has advanced to the point that many items don't have to be perfectly clean.

Here in Iceland, every household has two seperate rubbish bins - one for regular trash and metal which you separate in a little clear bag, and the "green bin" for carboard (e.g. packaging, pizza boxes, newspapers etc.) and plastic (again packaging, e.g. shampoo and other plastic bottles, cling film/saran wrap, etc.). Some have an organic bin which you'll use for any food remains or peels. We recycle almost everything, and have huge stations for that. So this way, you can take jars, furniture, tires, electronics, and so much more there and then dispose of in a categorised, orderly fashion. Plastic, aluminium, and glass drinking bottles come with a pant; money back when you take them for recycling. We even collect the little aluminium containers from tea lights in a separate little bin. Some towns have a mandatory recycling within the household of EVERYTHING (as in, you have to have all three bins, and have to categorise everything). Thank you for an educational video. Hopefully it is only one of many to come.

Shampoo and body wash still works even if moderately diluted, so you can put some water into the bottle to flush the remaining contents out and use it as-is. Most of other products can have its container cut open allowing you to scrape the remains off the container wall and scoop them out. Some brands offer refills of various products using a reduced package, choose those if you have a bottle that can hold the product.

Also *fun fact* you can save some plastic water bottles (AND BEER BOTTLES + OTHER BOTTLES// CANS you can exchange too) and recycle them at some places (look up your state and see where you can return them- it’s different for almost every state!) when you return them you get 5 cents for each bottle. So if you get some old trash bags and you put 100 in each one that can add up quickly!

@hashtagspatz
@hashtagspatz 6 лет назад
Anne Smith Yes. There is a system for recycling plastic which can be recycled. (Also glass, metal, paper and organic waste is recycled). The rest is burned in a big factory, the heat is used for heating or electricity, the smoke is contained is special filter material which is then also processed to regain different chemicals.

As of pumps, they are very likely standardized and interchangeable maybe except for the siphon. Rinse them clean, and you will be able to reuse them down the road on another bottle. Some brand sells the same products with and without a pump, if you already had a matching pump you can buy the one without the pump, circumventing the recycling rule and maybe save a few cents.

Now we just need to remember to recycle all types of plastic bags/packaging. Most supermarkets have a bag recycling box where you can drop off all your used materials! Lots of other items can be recycled here too, ziplock bags, plastic wrapping like the kind that comes on toilet paper, and many others. Check online for specifics for your state 😊

Great concept, but I'm always concerned that so much of the discussion that does happen in the media generally cites statistics that do not include home-recycling and kind of suggest that recycling is somehow external of the individual (for example, so many suggest that you need to check what public schemes your area has) and there isn't so much on the personal responsibility for individuals to apply the three Rs at home. Also I would love to see people being encouraged to educate themselves on what plastics the packaging in their homes are made from and encouragement to ring and write to their companies (and lobby their representatives at all levels of government) and insist on vegetable (compostable) plastics versus other plastics. This is one of the better pieces I've seen, but I'd love to see a follow-up that addresses some of this extra stuff.

L'Occitane en Provence works with Terracycle too. Depending on your location you may be able to give them all your packagings or only the plastic ones, and you get 10% off on a new product. This next one may depend on your country but I know in France (where I live) Sephora accepts empty perfume bottles (from any store) and gives you 20% off on a new perfume. I couldn't find anything for the US but maybe it depends on the shop?
