You forgot a very important step, when exporting to ProRes: adjusting Whitebalance in Processing tab. You'll loose a lot of quality this way! Premiere or Resolve can not undo this correctly...

Wait, so you're saying to NOT adjust the white balance in the app? Leave that to Premiere or Resolve? I wonder why it looses quality on export... Thanks for the help!!!

No, it is very important to do it in MLVApp, if you export not as DNG. Main difference between RAW and ProRes is, that in ProRes the white balance is burned in. That means, after export, you are limited in this way, no matter how good or bad any further software is... Premiere, Resolve and friends have no real chance to make it good looking then...

Hi, quick question, I managed to record in 2.5k and it came out very well. I'm using a manual lens on iso 100 but if I let to much light in (aperture) the recording turns red and stops. It's fine if I'm doing a still shot but the screen goes so dark that it's hard for me to focus on moving subjects. Any help?

I ran into a similar issue when I was using slower cards. Once I upped to the 95Mbps cards, the issue resolved itself. Hope this helps!

Mine are converted into .RAW or .MRX, can't do anything with them and really would love for some advice on what to do to edit them into premiere. Still hate that I can only record up to 10-11 sec.

Hello buddy I have a problem. After processing and exporting the raw video, I open it for viewing with the VLC application and see the video playing a little slow and with difficulty. Where is the error? Why am I having this? What's your comment man?

hi man, i use Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7200U CPU @ 2.50GHz 2.70 GHz laptop and 20gb ram. ml work good with eos m but mlv app not convert any thing. i install ffmpeg etc. but still not convert any think.... i try 5 hour....

Got the app and it works with the mlv video I shot with my t2i. Seems a little corrupt, but I think it's because my card isn't fast enough. I'm using a sandisk extreme 90 MB/s. I'm going to get a fast one and try it. Hopefully I can turn this into a small cinema camera!

Try filming a brief clip first. Then do your shot. Sometimes cards like to be primed this way. It's weird but works for me if this glitch happens. Also, try not to go into the Canon menu because it can subtly 'fight' with the ML settings with this build.

T2i writes at 20mb/s max. You will not get large res footage no matter what card. Try an eos m. Tip: under modules, there is a card teat program, so you can see what your write speed is.

Not MLV files, unless it’s new in CC 2019. It’s such a small, specific codec it doesn’t get a lot of recognition.

Hi Garrett, im totally new and rookie into this Magic Lantern RAW files, so... i wish to make u some questions, if u answer ill be very greatfull so.. 1- hey, ur explaining that MLV APP alllows u to change settings EVEN BEFORE export the file... that means that MVL APP should be just a convert deal, but as it allows u to make all this, is actually more than just a converter.... am i right? 2- When u talk about to carry our file, later, to resolve or whatever... i mean, wich kinf of file is what u send into that software? its still being raw?? as u see im confused and maybe i dont even know what im talkin about, thats why im asking, so... is still being raw? wich format u export files from MLV APP

Hi, I have used the export file feature (and yes I have specified a known place on my computer) but, no matter what file format I try, there is no file in the specified folder. Any thought on why this may be the case please?

What an odd problem... Maybe try a different hard drive destination and see if that works?

This is great, but when I export a command line window pops up and then goes away, it "exports" and then finishes but when I look in the folder there's nothing there. Am I missing a step?

Hi! Really helpful since I'm not familiar at all with RAW workflow. In MLV App I've seen an option to set a "Alexa C-Log" , cool that be better for LUT compatibility or would I lose any kind of room for processing? like compressing it. Thanks in advance.

I know you need to work out your white balance before exporting, but I don’t know about specific log export types. I generally just set the white balance and export as ProRes. Then I do all my work in lumetri or resolve.

Help! When i export, no matter what settings i use, my video comes out stretched horizontally. I followed your settings exactly. Footage is 100% when viewing in MLV, no stretching. But once exported the clip is stretched. When i view in VLC or premiere post and even when exporting from premier post the footage stretches horizontally. Any suggestions for what i am doing wrong?

It sounds like the footage is being desqueezed on export. Check to make sure no desqueezing or anamorphic settings are accidentally selected. That’s the only thing I can think of.

That’s a tough one, but the best way to edit on limited machines is to utilize proxy files. Search RU-vid for “proxy workflow” with whichever software you use.

Plz help me out I processed my raw files from c500 odyssey 7q+ ...the files were 11mb out of ssd but when I processed them on canon raw devloper it became a 50mb per frame

MLV Raw won't help with the files coming out of the C500/7Q+ combo. This is for cameras hacked with Magic Lantern.

Is there any point in transcoding to ProRes 4444 over 422hq or others? ProRes 4444 is the closest thing to raw, right?

Having the extra channel in ProRes 4444 is for opacity. So that get used primarily when you have GFX or other assets that carry transparent information. While yes, 422 does have less color information encoded into it, generally it isn’t enough to justify the enormous file sizes.

Hey man, thanks for the video, this is my first time woking with this workflow and those types of files. it might seem like a dumb question but I was just wondering, after you've converted the MLV files, and after you've locked off the edit. When you export the final edit or when you move into the grading phase, are the original MLV files linked to the MOV. Proxy files? and if not how do you re link both those files, or is it unnecessary. Many thanks

I haven’t used them as proxy files. I’m sure there would be a way to link them but honestly, there isn’t much software that reads MLV. I’d do the simple color correction (white balance, exposure recovery, etc) and export as ProRes files. Then just use those for your grading after picture lock.

If I have 1 hour worth of footage, if I am converting to prores HQ, how long will it take? I have Dell laptop Windows 10, Intel Core i7 2.8 GHz with 16GB RAM.

It would be hard to say without doing a benchmark speed-test, but it would definitely take several hours. I’d let it run overnight while you’re sleeping and wake up to fully exported clips.

Ooooh! Try to open it again, get the error, and close it. Open system preferences, security and privacy, then you should see “open MLV App anyways” at the bottom of the window.

Man, transcoding...the bane of my life . I cant honestly see the point in exporting to Pro Res as you lose all that Raw goodness. I want to work in Raw from start to finish. (Yeah I know theres ProRes Raw but thats still a VERY expensive option to buy the gear to film in)

Yah, that’s the unfortunate thing about a camera that shoots in an unsupported raw codec. If nothing else, you could transcode to dng raw and work in resolve from there. Still transcoding, but you’d keep the raw aspect of your workflow.

well It's so cool ! This app can open the 14bit lossness raw video! The MLVRAWVIEWER app can't do it! Before I use this app I use the MLV_dump to trans the lossness to the dng file. This app also can do it . Great!!! BTW what camera you used to shoot this tutorial?
