I love the Hill was in one of the stores you showed, I an Italian & love the restaurants, knew u were at Urban Chestnut in the Grove, Sanctuaries & Sauce on the Side, a Cakzone place are great. The best Slingers, especially at 3AM on a Saturday morning are at The Courtesy Diner. The one thing that u different mention that is native to St Louis is the St Paul Sandwich from some of the Chinese restaurants, it's egg foo young on white bread with mayonnaise, lettuce , tomato & pickle, it's delicious. Thank you for your wonderful review of St Louis, it has so many nice places.

You should add Gus' Pretzels to your list. It's just across the highway from the AB Brewery and it's as iconic in St. Louis as they come. They are available frozen throughout the city and many convenience stores will have "fresh" ones for sale. But nothing like getting them fresh from where they are made. When I was a kid in the 70's, you could buy them in bags of 4 or 5 on many big intersections in the city. Vendors would come up to your car and you give them $1 and they give you a bag of pretzels. I remember going with my Dad to the original little place on Arsenal that they have since expanded significantly. I think they are on the 4th generation of this family owned business.

One thing I would add is pig snoots! Don't knock it til you try it...it is found at some BBQ places in STL. Also, in addition to Imo's, the best St. Louis-style pizza can be found at places like Frank and Helen's, Erio's and Pirrone's (however, these three are in St. Louis County but still!). Cool that you're from St. Louis! Had no idea

Thanks for giving St. Louis some favorable press, Jocelyn. I am a fan of Wolter’s World, but I didn’t know that you were from near St. Louis. I am a long time resident, and I would offer a few caveats, with which others may or may not agree. Ted Drewes is all that they say it is, and it is always very crowded, but the service is very fast. Highly recommended. Imo’s pizza is very popular here, but not everyone likes provel cheese. There are a lot of other wonderful pizzerias that offer alternatives. We do have a significant Italian community, and many fine Italian restaurants, not all of which are on “The Hill” (which is not really that hilly, BTW.) Toasted ravioli and gooey butter cake are overrated, as are Anheuser-Busch products (although A-B has indeed done a lot for the community). And the best barbecue can be found on street corners during summer months, sold by local clubs and churches. I have lived here almost all my life, but we do not refer to our town as “The Lou.” It’s ‘Saint Louis’ with an ‘s.’ And baseball and where we went to high school really are serious topics for discussion.

I was just in St. Louis this past fall. One of the places I never miss is right outside of the city, and yes it's not specifically a St. Louis thing, but Cheeburger Cheeburger! I can only do the Serious burger, though my cardiologist wants me to try the Famous Pounder! They also have egg cream which has been the only place I've been able to find it outside of NYC. Oh, and when they're playing, even though they're our division rivals, I have to catch a Cards game and they have some pretty good chow at the ballpark as well! That being said: GO BREWERS!!! Well done. As a life-long resident I will attest you hit most people's 'to do' lists. Tommy Lasorda (RIP) when he came to town when he was the Dodger's manager, ALWAYS hit the hill. You know he knew where the good food was. Riggazi's (on the hill) had pics and jerseys of visiting players who stopped by. Pre-Covid Bissinger's used to let you do free tours at their production facility. Anheuser-Busch used to have free tours but since InBev took over, I don't think that's the case anymore sadly. Also, I agree there are small independent shops in the city limits, but you need to be careful and pay attention to your surroundings. You were in a group and many of your followers won't be. The city of St. Louis is no where near as safe as it was not that long ago.

Pretty good list. I saw the writing about pork steaks but didn’t hear about it, and definitely didn’t hear about snoots which are amazing. I love Crown Candy! I used to take all my new guys there. Such a great place. I love the mention of the great chef culture here. There is never a need to eat chain food. We have such great food here! U-city has amazing dumplings and Chinese food in general. Manchester has amazing Indian and general Asian food. Sedara Bakery just opened a new spot with savory options that’s AMAZING! We also have fantastic Balkan food here. When Alton Brown visited this year, he and his wife were shocked by the Balkan food. In a great way. We have a decent number of places to get really good cevapi, though the Balkan Treat Box is the most acclaimed. Usually I go the the Balkan Store and Bakery because I grab some groceries there as well. We also have a very decent Latin American food scene here. I’m not talking about mission taco. That’s ok, but there is no authenticity to it. Tasty. Well presented. I’m not going to say over expensive because they do work presenting premium ingredients. But I’d rather have an authentic cheap taco available from various places around here. Still, STL is a really fantastic food city. I’ve lived on four continents and been to a lot of places, and while I’d rather be in the mountains and the coast, the great food culture is one of the main redeeming qualities of St Louis.

@@fiftyfive70 Ha! Warning fully appreciated! I doubt that I’m about to have pizza shipped across the country, but I am curious as to how that would work - at the very least in terms of temperature. The recipient has to re-heat in an oven, yes? Wouldn’t that affect taste quite a lot right there?

Looking forward to try some of these. The food looks pretty awesome. My girlfriend and I might go to St Louis in October for Canadian Thanksgiving/ Columbus Day weekend. Neither one of us have been to St Louis or the state of Missouri. We have to admit, we are a bit concerned about the horror story crime issues we have heard about. Do you have any tips or suggestions regarding that? Did you feel unsafe at all? or does the media play alot of drama to once again make a good story which is what they do best? We are thinking of getting around most places by Uber or Lyft since we will only be in town for 2 or 3 days.

Hey Jonathan! You should totally come down to STL if you haven’t already. Keep an eye out for Airbnbs in Tower Grove South, Shaw, Soulard, and Central West End, as these are great places to stay for people visiting. Lots of things of do in each of those neighborhoods locally, but close enough to hop in a 5 min Uber and get downtown or to another area! St. Louis has its pockets of crime like any other city, but if you use common sense it’s usually no problem- especially if you are staying near larger attractions like Tower Grove Park, Forest Park, Soulard, etc. These are areas where lots of people will be out walking around enjoying their days, and there are attractions close by.

I'm close enough that I can still see the Gateway Arch from my town though. Where are my fellow Kahoks at? 💜🤍💜🤍💜 But about the provel...I'm just not a fan. First of all, when it is hot, it is like liquid magma and say adios to the skin on the roof of your mouth. But most notably, and excuse my crassness, but it is a major gut-bomb. Your gallbladder will not be happy with you. And if you've already had it removed? Forget it. Do not even attempt IMO's pizza if you are gallbladderless.

I thought about it and...well, I guess the provel kind of grows on you and tastes kind of good because it is tangy and weird and tastes better the more you eat it. BUT it makes you feel absolutely horrible afterwards. If someone can eat it and not get sick, then I am extremely impressed with their digestive system. I can see how if someone would love it if they are drunk. I mean, you'd feel horrible in the morning anyway, why not?
