Trillions of evolution’s bizarro wonders, red-eyed periodical cicadas that have pumps in their heads and jet-like muscles in their rears, are about to emerge in numbers not seen in decades and possibly centuries.

I have some actually nice memories of seceda invasions. We had one in Vegas when I was seven or eight. We hunted them and played with them. They're really cool bugs. The shells they leave behind are kind of creepy, but still cool. That one summer was probably one of the happiest and safest that I ever had growing up, so I'm sure that's part of my pleasant feelings toward them, but I don't care why. I can't wait to see them again.

Pretty much everywhere gets cicadas every year. But these guys are talking about massive broods numbering in the trillions. They completely blanket forests and neighborhoods, their song is deafening, and the smell of their bodies after they all die off is less than pleasant. They’re pretty cool, but a little obnoxious. These broods don’t come around every year and that’s why they’re a big deal.

So there are numerous species of cicada, im not a super nerd on them but if i understand them correctly there are about 4 main species, ones that bloom yearly, bi yearly, every ten years and every 17 years, there are more, and the life cycle is fascinating, but once they come out of the ground they are the loudest things around, i had the misfortune to be present during a double bloom, and it was horrible, my ears actually hurt, Anecdotally a “bloom” is the part of the life cycle where the cicadas emerge from the ground. So when two or more species bloom at the same time…….well flamethrowers work wonders lol

Why prime numbers, though? I heard it's a survival strategy. But I don't exactly know why prime numbers makes the difference.

Not one person concerned about Revelations prophesy about locusts on here ...oh i just googled and it was debunked...they only 'resemble' locusts. Well I guess the bible is WAY off then (add your bible/christ disbelief arguments here!) Clown-world

Not hundreds but millions of them. I took a 20 mile drive, 2 days ago here in GA, and for 95% of the 20 mile drive both ways Cicadas were so loud I could hear them while going 65 mph with the AC on and windows up. Infact I hear them now as I'm typing this. They should like a huge humidifier or something is in the woods.
