Is it possible to visit the Venice Biennale in just one day? I have heard this question many many many times over the last few years and I myself asked and experienced it a few years ago. The answer is yes, but choices will have to be made.
I understand that it is not always possible to organize a tour of the Biennale lasting more than one day, although as I have advised in the past and will continue to do in the future, in my opinion, the ideal would be to dedicate one day to the Arsenale, one to the gardens and one to the pavilions outside in the city. Having said that, in one day you can experience the atmosphere of the Biennale and get more than a taste of the theme, the works and the national pavilions.
If you don't want to spend the €26 ticket, then my advice is to go and watch the video in which I tell you about the tour of the free external pavilions. Instead, if you want to move between Arsenale and Giardini, which are the two paid venues quite close to each other, this is the right place.
Both venues open at 11am and close at 7pm in the summer, every day except Monday which is the closing day of the Biennale, so I suggest you arrive around opening hours and start from the Arsenale, but with the ticket in pdf on the mobile already done online so you only have to pass the entrance turnstiles.
The itinerary begins directly with the main exhibition which also dictates the theme of the event: the Milk of Dreams. The title is taken from a series of surrealist stories by twentieth-century artist Leonora Carrington. They are fairy tales that tell of an imaginary world and fantastic creatures. Exactly like the creatures of the imagination that are found in the works from the very first rooms.
My suggestion to start from the Arsenale is not accidental, especially in the summer period, because the space in the first part dedicated to the exhibition is completely indoors, therefore it will allow you to avoid spending the central hours of the day, between 11 and 12.30 too much weather in the sun. In fact, to cross the offices and pavilions you walk a lot and get tired easily, so if you want to enjoy the first hours of opening, this is the best way.
Then you will have to move towards the Gardens to be able to stay there for at least 2-3 hours. The walking distance between the two offices is only 10 minutes, so it can be done just by following the route on Google Maps. Once you get to the Gardens, you have to make choices here too, but I'm sure the temperature will have dropped as it is now early afternoon and the atmosphere will certainly be pleasant.
