When it comes to deciding what level of formality to wear, if you’re ever in doubt, you’re not remiss in asking when you RSVP about an unofficial dress code or you can ask yourself, “What is the host most likely to want me to wear?”
Remember also that New Year’s Eve is a unique, fun occasion, and assuming that you want to stick to the conventions of Classic Style, we’ve found that it is usually better to be overdressed than underdressed.

If you’ve been invited to a civic, governmental, or diplomatic event because of the likelihood of interacting with important dignitaries, you will want to stick to formal evening options -- Black Tie, Black Tie Optional, and more sedate iterations of Contemporary Black Tie.
Other private institutional events such as one hosted by a fraternal order like the Masons or a charitable organization may allow for more creative Holiday Black Tie.
For a formal party at a private residence, your hosts will likely prefer a more dignified air so Black Tie and Black Tie Optional won’t go wrong. But because it is a private setting and New Year’s Eve is supposed to be fun, tasteful Contemporary and Holiday Black Tie are also perfectly fine.
For an office party hosted by a more traditional business, any form of Black Tie is likely acceptable.
If you are invited to a private party hosted at a restaurant or hotel, the dress code could run the gamut from traditional Black Tie to Cocktail attire.
If you find yourself at a more casual soiree like a party at a nightclub or lounge, you should embrace the relaxed but classically cool atmosphere. We recommend plush examples of Contemporary Black Tie, Festive Holiday Attire, or Cocktail Attire.
For many public celebrations like New Year's ball drop, fireworks display, and public concerts, wear whatever outerwear you need to stay comfortable.
