The big difference s that in Finland people drink mainly to get shit faced, in central europe they drink all the time and every where but don't drink just to get drunk. This means that while over all alcohol consumption in eg. Finland and Belgium are the same, you rarely see anyone being completely shit faced in Belgium.

My cousin is married to an American woman (US). I always remember when they were a new couple, not even engaged yet, and I had a conversation with this lovely lady when she was visiting Finland. She asked me if we have polar bears in Finland and I just answered that we do have them in the Zoo. She asked if we have any wild polar bears and I said that no, they're only in the Zoo. After that we just changed the subject and didn't talk about polar bears anymore. A year later she was visiting Finland again and somehow we started to talk about how we Finns are protecting the Saimaa Ringed Seal from extinction. She admired us how we have learned from the history about what we had done to the polar bears. Turned out, that she thought that originally there were wild polar bears in Finland and we Finns had just hunted all of them down to the point there were none left anymore... 23 years later we still laugh about that innocent misconception sometimes. She and my cousin are still together. They have lived in Finland for 15 years now, because they want to raise their children here. She's one of my best friends now.

I'm swedishspeaking and found Finnish classes in school very difficult, the grammar was just mind boggling. I grew up in a very predominantly swedish speaking area, and very seldom had to speak finnish, and almost never even dared to try because of the complexity. I then moved to Sweden to study, and somehow I forgot most of the Finnish grammar, and when I moved back I just spoke a lot more finnish. I'm probably making lots of errors but since I don't remember any rules anymore I just speak. Most of the time finnish people seem to understand me ;) my friend used to say, just put the words in a line one after the other and let them (the listeners) do the conjugations ;). I guess one thing that irks me as a Swedish speaking finn especially when in Sweden is that most people there think everyone in Finland is a native finnish speaker. People used to give me praise for my Swedish skills, and then be perplexed when I told them I've spoken swedish my whole life - that it's mine and a quarter of a million people's mother tongue and proceed to tell them a brief history of Finland's Swedish speaking areas, remind them that we were the same country for 700 years and then get a blank stare and the question, "so when did your parents move from Sweden?" 😂

About learning local language. If you don't understand the language, you are always outsider. The local language is like a sea for a fish. Without any language skills, you are like a scuba diver at coral reef; You can make some observations, but you don't really feel, what is happening. If you adopt some language skills, however limited, you start to being a fish. This applies any language, any country.

One that bugs me as a person living in Southern Finland, is that many tourists come to Helsinki during October-December and are disappointed they don't see the northern lights. I always just want to say "well, duh, what would you expect seeing when there is barely even snow in Helsinki? You need to go to Lapland for that, and if you are lucky, you might see them". Problem with the schools are that teacher don't have the power to teach anymore and kids are allowed to do whatever they want. Like if someone would have sat on a phone back in my day you would have heard a snap sound on your desk. If boys were fighting the teachers were allowed to break em up and take to force. Today its like "My kid is the best kid ever and the bad teacher did wrong". They need some discipline and all electronic stuff should be stored in a locker until the day is over. With today's "hooker" look on 10 year olds a school uniform would probably be a good thing too(I do not know what parent let their girl go out in a miniskirt smaller than my sock and see through panties but I am damn sure my kid would only try once). Parents need to control their children, they behave like shit holes on the public train and if I would be allowed I would smack em for the words they use. Then the stupidity they are allowed to absorb from stuff like tiktok, I do listen to em every morning on the train for 20 mins so yes they do not know that the information is false. I do not blame the schools, I do blame the parents for being lazy fcks that thinks you can continue your life as before after having kids. Take some responsibility and understand that your kid is never perfect as you know you probably weren't a perfect child!

There are plenty of obvious reasons for some of the stereotypes. For example, once an American or Western European tourist arrives in Helsinki by ferry or cruise ship, the first thing they see is the Russian Orthodox cathedral (Uspenski Cathedral). When a tourist approaches the most famous landmark, Helsinki Cathedral (lutheran church) by the senate square, they see the statue of Russian Czar, Alexander II in the middle of the square. It is surrounded by historical buildings that look very "Russian". This is because the same architects who built important public buildings in St. Peterburg, Russia also designed some of the major public buildings of Helsinki in the 19th century. Most importantly, the Government palace and the Helsinki University main building. During the first cold war, whenever American fiction filmmakers needed outdoor shots of "Leningrad", they filmed in Helsinki. The Finnish political position between the east and the west, with close relations with USSR also made some Anglo-Saxon people put Finland in the category of a Soviet Satellite, like Poland, Hungary or Czechoslovakia. I once saw some old American map of northern Europe where Helsinki was written "Helsinskiy", like it was a name of a Russian city. Until 1993, the international vehicle registration code of Finland used to be SF (for Suomi - Finland, the country name in both official languages), but it was sometimes understood as "Soviet Finland". And about the four seasons in Finland: We must understand that the overwhelming majority of the world's population live in regions that have a dry season and rainy season, or just one season, but no significant difference in temperatures throughout the year. Therefore, for those people, it may be difficult to understand how the same place that sometimes has freezing cold temperatures below -40°C in winter can have hot temperatures above +30°C.

I find that the best way to learn a language is through immersion (at least after you've learned the bare basics). Be that through books, TV shows or news articles. Back when I was a teen (some 20 years ago), I started reading books in English, and this improved my English tremendously.
@Silveirias

@TheRawrnstuff
@TheRawrnstuff Год назад
Immersion definitely helps, but in my humble opinion the way Finnish language is structured makes it a lot trickier to learn by immersion compared to English. In English, you have this "word-word-word-word-word" structure in which individual words never really change - you get far by just knowing the words. Finnish however has sentences like "auton taaimmaiseltakaan penkiltä", where you have to recognize the important parts (auto, taka, penkki), the "repeating elements" ('-n' in autoN and in the -kaaN suffix; the '-lta' in -'seLTAkaan' and 'penkiLTÄ') and figure out their relation to the sentence, and on top of that you have to pick those from these super long words that you've never probably trained your eyes to read. If I were to teach someone Finnish, I'd probably recommend starting with books for very young children. With those that have the syllable separation lines included. Taaimmaiseltakaan is a lot easier to read when it's written like "taa-im-mai-sel-ta-kaan". And even if the children's book never had that word in it, it would still help you get acquainted with these long words via understanding how the syllables are formed. I'd wager it would also help mitigate mistakes like pronouncing "mitä kuuluu" like "meta kuluu". It's not exactly "high literature", though.

I don't think being socially crippled refers just to being talkative or having a lot of social circle. I think it's more about how we communicate, and generally speaking, I totally agree. Being socially skilled isn't our highest resource. We are a bit direct, blatant and truthful. As a describing characteristic, not an absolut truth about everyone. I think I am a bit socially awkward, and feels really good to say it aloud. Makes me more free to be me. Just to make it as clear as possible, none of this has to be a disadvantage.

I have thought that those people who imagine that Finns are quiet and don't talk to other people, have never visited the provinces outside the Helsinki metropolitan area. Especially in central Finland, there is a lot of chattering, and speechless moments and silence are awkward if more than one person is present. The American professor Michael Berry called this phenomenon the Finnish "blah-blah-blah-culture" and many foreign students who studying in Central Finland have noticed that the reality has not matched the image and stereotype of us Finns because it is difficult to find a quiet moment and Finns talk too much and too long here. However, the thing that has surprised foreigners the most in Central Finland is that it is difficult to have your own turn to say something when the other might be talking about, for example, grandmother's sciatica or winter feeding of sparrows for tens of minutes or even half an hour before the other gets to speak. And the way I got to know this was to talk about it with random people in situations where we have met and at the same time have been guilty of this "blah-blah-blah-culture" sin myself.

What comes to speaking Finnish.. I don't mind speaking English with people that have moved here from other countries. But, I do think it's a bit arrogant if you have lived here for years and still haven't learnt ANY Finnish. We know that Finnish is a difficult language for others to learn, so we don't expect for you to speak it fluently in like year or two. It's the effort that is appreciated - learn at least the basics and use them here and there. A simple Kiitos or Huomenta etc will make a Finn happy. 😊

For learning Finnish grammar, I have found the book “Finnish: An Essential Grammar” by Fred Karlsson to be very helpful. Also, it sounds like some of your hesitancy might stem from a fear of trying to converse with others in Finnish and making mistakes. I suggest that one of the first things you memorize in Finnish is how to state that you are learning Finnish, will probably make mistakes, and thank them for their patience and for speaking slowly. Some people might even be willing to gently correct you or provide feedback, if you’re comfortable with that and ask them to do that. Immersion is a crucial part of learning any language, and I think you’ll find that people will be kind and supportive once they know that you’re making an effort to learn their language. Best of luck!

I was so happy to see that you mentioned my comment! Something I feel I didn't clarify enough in the original: There is absolutely nothing wrong with not being able to speak Finnish, and my comment is by no means targeted at you - my annoyance has to do specifically with a lack of effort, or with people discouraging people to learn Finnish. I don't live in Finland but I occasionally encounter locals who are really enthusiastic about the language and the moment they mention that, some other local makes a comment about how they should learn a different language instead, because "Finnish is really difficult" (which it is) and because "they all speak English anyways" (we have a high average level, it doesn't mean it's a language everyone knows or feels comfortable in). In those moments I feel like we're being punished for having studied hard to learn a language.

It's not true that Finns don't like meeting new people. I believe that there are these not so social people in every country. Some of the Finns, in my opinion, consider it strangely a matter of pride and create an image that Finns are not social. I talk to almost new people every day and the neighbors have come to ask e.g. I borrow playing cards, sugar, etc., even though I live in an apartment building and have made a lot of good friends. It is a myth that all Finns today are somehow shy. For some, maybe speaking English is somehow difficult and they are so ashamed of it that they don't like to meet foreigners and try to get to know them. But if someone annoys me, it's the fact that a Finn says "Finns don't talk, and they don't like to talk to strangers".. Although this doesn't apply to everyone. It just depends on the person

Then i decided to use a different approach mind you this was not condoned by the school. I just said to the smirking bullies that if you continue this i will kick your asses and it worked a bit. I was so sick and tired of the school not doing fucking anything concrete to solve the problem. I was myself bullied because of my larger size and it only stopped when i took matters in to my own hands broke one of the bullies noses. I do not condone the use of violence except as a means of self-defence but at that point i had had it and saw no other option. Also in the school one of my friends had tro change schools because of bullying and a another one took his own life at the age of 13.

My middle school got some visitors from Greece at some point, their visit happened to coincide with the coldest winter of said decade, and the coldest week of said winter. Their down jackets wouldn't have been enough during late autumn, let alone during actual winter. For some reason they still decided to huddle together outside like penguins instead of waiting inside the school buildings. We weren't allowed to, but they would've been. They asked me about polar bears. I managed to convince them that we had had some, but they had moved further north since it was currently too warm in the south for them. (I'd like to remind you of what was said in the first paragraph, it's important. 😁) Also: we definitely don't have snow all year around, that's ridiculous! It only snows during midsummer every 5 years or so! Also also: we do build igloos in our yard, but that's only every other year.

Regarding Finland and Scandinavia: If I wanted to be a bit provocative, I'd say that I think there's a decent number of us Finns who have kind of a "special snowflake" mentality regarding Finnish culture and identity. They seem to believe that the connections to Sweden start with the time of Swedish rule, and this is incorrect. The Western Finns (i.e. The people who were originally called Finns to begin with) began to intermingle with the northern Germanic and Baltic peoples in rhe Bronze age, i.e. about 2500 years before Swedish rule. I'm not trying to argue that the Finns and the Swedes are identical (they aren't) but the two are heavily intertwined and have been for a LONG time, and the same can be said regarding Finns and Estonia.

Not at all related but this reminded me of that one (prolly fake) study that suggested that using Hitlers' "Aryan race" rules The Finns would have been one of, if not THE, purest "Aryan" people in Europe WHILE AT THE SAME TIME carrying the largest amount of non-european/far-eastern genes of all European "races". So yeah, it's never as simple as "we" want it to be. Geographically Finland technically counts as Scandinavia due Finland having some of the peaks of The Scandes "Proper" on its lands. In practise, the hazardous and unpredictable Gulf of Bothnia has divided us from the rest of "Scandinavia" for long time. Culturally is more 50/50. Yes, ties to Sweden are very close - after all they "civilized" us. They taught us statescraft, organized religion and technology. Wars between Sweden and Russia taught us warfare and global politics. Then again, Finns just are not Germanic people. We do not share the same north germanic/norse heritage. We have our own shared with the Sami and Baltic peoples. It's just about what we want to cherrypick and highlight.

@@Makapaa Regarding heritage, *sort* of. The cultural mixing started a long ass time ago, and it had a massive impact on Finnish culture, including mythology and language (500 protogermanic words in Finnish etc.). I'd recommend checking out Anna-Leena Siikala's book Itämerensuomalaisten Mytologia, talks quite a bit about this topic among many others. Genetically Finland is indeed pretty odd, although even that's not very simple. The East/West divide is bigger than the genetic gap between the English and Germans. The Sami on the other hand are further from the Finns than the Swedes are from the Estonians. We're not as genetically homogenous as we often think.
@Makapaa
@Makapaa Год назад
@@GOAT-rl2uq Hence the generous "more 50/50". Language roots alone shouldn't be given that much weight since that only proves that yes, these people met and interacted at some point. If language ties were the deciding factor, shouldn't english and UK be counted as part of "Scandinavian Languages and Nations"? And if we continue on that same line of thinking, aren't Finns just the Nordic "Anglo-Saxons" that subjugated the local "Celtic" tribes? "The Norse" people come in and start causing both problems and benefits? And those touches still affect the identity of these now "Norman" peoples to this day, almost a millenia later? tl;dr Are Finns just the Nordic England?

I hate when people think that the entire Finland is like Lapland and that there are reindeer everywhere. Even some Finns don't know where Lapland is. But those kind of things are understandable since people don't really care about things that are far away and tend to believe whatever information they come across instead of looking it up. I don't really know the southern Finland properly myself. Also on the language topic: I think learning a language is just about using it. If you start using finnish you will learn it no matter how bad you initially are. That's the reason why Finns don't learn to speak Swedish or English despite both being mandatory languages in school. They just don't feel the need to use it. I used to think that the younger generation would all be good at English thanks to the internet but then I got a younger coworker who's worse at it than my old man.
