In this video I'll show you what crops you can still grow in your organic vegetable garden in August or late summer. Im talking about warm season crops for almost any climate.
First you need to find out your first average frost date if you don't already know it. You can find that here: www.almanac.com/gardening/fro...

Don't forget you can jumpstart a new tomato plant right now by cutting a "sucker" out of the armpit of an existing tomato plant. This is often called cloning because you get an exact replica of the parent plant. Stick the stem in water up to the first leaf in a sunny windowsill and wait about 2 weeks for the roots to form, then plant it. The more stem the better, so clip a leaf or two off. I've got 2 San Marzano clones going right now for fall!

@jeannamcgregor9967
@jeannamcgregor9967 Год назад
@@apiecemaker1163 Maybe they have to be an indeterminate type in order to clone? The San Marzanos I cloned produced maybe 5 lbs of tomatoes. But then, I have a first frost date of December 19th. And to make them root, you can persuade them by dipping the stems in rooting hormone powder before putting them in water.

Hi Brian, I've already started my fall garden with New Kuroda carrots, Purple Dragon carrots, Kyoto Red carrots, Uzbek gold carrots, Navone Gold rutabagas, Purple Top rutabagas, and turnips. I have five newly sprouted cucumber vines growing, and a batch of Danvers and red potatoes that will be ready to harvest in about a week. I will be resowing the red potatoes with potatoes from an earlier harvest. My zucchini are done, and dying, two plants. Tomorrow, I'll pull them up, and replace them with lemon squash, and yellow scallop squash. In August, I will be planting more turnips, Yod Fah, Chinese Cabbage, Bok Choy, and maybe some radishes. As the temperatures cool, in September, I will be planting the bulk of my fall garden. First, I have to prepare another 4x8 foot raised bed. I'm running our of garden space. LOL. I have a goal to produce half of the food I eat, or more, from my garden next year. I'm learning to can, freeze, and dehydrate, and have a deep freezer that is nearly full, and tomatoes and pickles on the shelf ready to eat this winter. I'm out of basil. Any guess at what I am picking tomorrow and dehydrating?

My tomatoes this year are the ones who are tired. They have been sun burnt, diseased and insect havens. I’m blessed to have gotten the few good ones I did. Today, I direct sowed bush beans and I’ve started some greens and my second crop of potatoes. I am praying for all the homesteaders and farmers who are suffering in these extreme temps, floods and drought this season.

100+ daily in Austin, Texas, appreciating the survivors. Collards, peppers (can't set fruit over 100 but they're hanging in there till cools in fall.) One purple pepper - will seed-save that as it's proven itself. Fruit trees like pear, apple, elderberry doing well in dappled shade from trees & tall bamboo. People have a range of opinions on my "urban forest", especially the bamboo - some really enjoy the shade and the look, lush contrast to sun-baked yards with grass & a few bushes, trees. Others criticize ... but garden shaded by bamboo on west, south flourishes, & it makes yard livable / house a few degrees cooler. The south garden in sun takes a lot of watering & even what survives can't produce. It all works when you think of it as learning, finding out what to do coming season. Thank you all for sharing, it helps to know we're all going through a rough patch.

That's awesome! Thanks Brian! I moved and didn't have a garden at all. Right now we are all sick so maybe in a couple of weeks will feel better and ready to plant.🤗❤🤗

So helpful. Already planned to plant my bush beans tonight, but made a list while you were talking. Thanks for naming varieties on the tomatoes. Have a good week. I'll have a busy one thanks to you, ha ha, after all the ideas you gave. I'm a mustard, turnip, kale type of person... never had swiss chard but if I can find the seeds, I'll give it a try. It's still upper 90's to 100 degrees here in east texas, but will have plenty of time before our first frost date.

Perfect timing on the video. I am going to plant beans and cucumbers this weekend. I want to do some no dig peas also. I have to retry potatoes too. I'm pushing the time limits in zone 4, but I'm going to get a cover/lid built for one bed, at least.

Had a great spring harvest (9b), but now I am so over the bugs. Had to pull all cucumber, zucchini & cantaloupe. Yes, I have companion plants, but the heat, humidity & bugs just destroyed the plants. Can't wait to do my fall garden & have some success again.

Thank you! I am going to try fall gardening. I was so depressed from the squash bugs, vine borders (I had both!), catepillars, And the heat.

I too prefer the fall garden. Summer in Louisiana gets too hot and my plants suffer even with consistent watering. I recently started cucumbers, squash and a second round of cherry tomatoes and a 2nd round of bush beans. Thank you for the tips.

Never weary, already planting for fall. I'm in the SE and fall gardening is the best. I also built myself a small greenhouse and I keep tomatoes and peppers (and other things) growing all year.
