5 important lessons HBO’s new animated series can learn from the wonderful Puss in Boots: The Last Wish movie.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish: (also known as Puss in Boots 2) is a 2022 American computer-animated adventure film produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures. The sequel to the spin-off film Puss in Boots (2011) and the sixth installment in the Shrek franchise, it was directed by Joel Crawford and co-directed by Januel Mercado, with a screenplay by Paul Fisher and Tommy Swerdlow, and a story by Swerdlow and Tom Wheeler (the writer of the previous film), based on the character from Shrek 2 (2004) and inspired from the fairy tale by Giovanni Francesco Straparola. The voice cast includes Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek Pinault reprising their respective roles as the titular character and Kitty Softpaws, and are joined by Harvey Guillén, Florence Pugh, Olivia Colman, Ray Winstone, Samson Kayo, John Mulaney, Wagner Moura, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, and Anthony Mendez who voice new characters introduced in the film. Set after Shrek Forever After (2010), the film follows Puss in Boots (Banderas) as he goes on a journey to find the mystical Last Wish for the Wishing Star by teaming up with his friends Kitty Softpaws (Hayek) and Perrito (Guillén) to restore the first eight of his nine lives that he lost, against two groups consisting of Goldilocks and The Three Bears Crime Family (Pugh, Winstone, Colman, and Kayo) and "Big" Jack Horner (Mulaney), who try to reach the star before him, and a mysterious hooded wolf (Moura), who plans to hunt him down for his last life. Velma is an American animated mystery horror comedy series based on the character Velma Dinkley from the Scooby-Doo franchise. Developed and created by Charlie Grandy for HBO Max, it stars executive producer Mindy Kaling as the voice of the titular character, with Sam Richardson, Constance Wu and Glenn Howerton in supporting roles. Grandy also serves as the showrunner of the series. It revolves around Velma Dinkley and the other human members of Mystery Inc. before their official formation. It is the first television series in the franchise to not feature the Scooby-Doo character.

Here's a large part of why Velma's constant rudeness is insufferable: she keeps spouting things she can't possibly know to one-up random characters, so it feels like the show is coddling her in particular, and she should've gotten punched in the face for a lot of the stuff she spews but nobody ever reacts like they register what she just said. What's the point of an annoying jerk if we never get to see them face any consequences?

I would of loved it if she and the gang got stabbed and then we watch their stabber run around and do thier job and like the guy (who we have no idea thier race is so there's that all we know is he white and he speaks English) litterly solves a lot more mysteries then the gang because whilst he stabbed them he at the very minimal is trying to help his community and through him we can get some actual good writing and If they did do this and they did it right I would love it if he never gets caught like at all and he's still running around but let's be real here that ain't gonna happen in a million god forsaken eons

@@REKRAP17 I wouldn't call Death a villain, per say; more of an "Antagonist". An Antagonist is someone who opposes what the protagonist goes for, a Villain is someone who takes pleasure in the crimes he commit and cares not for that. Yes, Death kills off people, but that's because it's his job. He just so happens to have a hatred over the idea of cats having nine lives, because they tend to squander that notion. I'm actually happy that Death is not a straight-up villain, and I do enjoy how he contributes to the journey that Puss has to go through. Sure, his methods can be unethical at times, but he loves his job, and seeing that he lets go of Puss because he learned to value what's important, it just gives me a big smile. Oh yeah, and BTW, what you said about the Scooby-Gang being some kind of family, I don't get that in "Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated". Someone at WB is like "People must've liked Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated, because we made them unlikable. Let's do this again and take it to the max!" Yeah, this is why I favor "Be Cool, Scooby Doo" over "Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated".

One thing I appreciate immensely about Puss N Boots TLW is that is has generated so many positive reviews and commentary. After Rings of Power, She Hulk, Blood Origin and Velma, it's nice to hear about a story and characters that people enjoy.

To add to your comment, it also becomes relatable to the kids since the wolf itself is terrifying to them. Seeing the main hero justify that fear and then seeing his journey to confront his fear makes the kids cheer for Puss In Boots

It's part of what caused the sequel trilogy for star wars to crash and burn. They thought of star wars fans as misogynistic icel types, so they destroyed the original trilogy characters to "teach them a lesson" and prioritized preaching and worshipping some female characters despite the lack of good writing and plot

I liked that Death was the form of a wolf instead of something typical like a skeleton or faceless figure because most times a wolf is the antagonist and doom of most classic fairy tale characters (Little Red, 3 Pigs, Boy Who Cried Wolf) and fits the mold of the Shrek universe. It’s a nice subtle touch. It also doesn’t call itself out as a stereotype of wolves being the bad guys and leans full tilt into the role. Straight up death. Like you said it feels great to enjoy a villain again.

There’s also some other symbolism, like how wolves are known to be able to chase prey for days without getting tired. Fitting for a being who has no problem chasing down his “prey” for however long it takes.

"Make the characters likeable" or at least relatable. Puss is relatable for adults watching because he's experiencing growing up and getting old. At some level Puss isn't entirely likeable (at least at first), rather he's a celeb in his universe. But it works because he loses the star power and become a genuinely likeable (and relatable) character.

I know Puss in Boots TLW would have been scary as hell for me as a kid. I had a big fear of wolves, so Death would have given me nightmares. I'm in my twenties now, and wolves have since become my favourite animals, but Death still made me feel fear through the big screen. He's downright terrifying, and I love him!

My favourite thing about Puss in Boots was how it completely gripped my 3 year old when I took him and my older kids to the cinema. I'm used to having to keep him quiet during showings because 90 minutes is a long time to keep still, but he was completely focused on the film. When Death lurched out of the shadows in the cave and said "FEAR!", he fell backwards in his seat in shock, but didn't cry. Small thing sure, but it sticks in my memory :-)

The Harley Quinn show did the same “take a character trait or quirk and dial it up to eleven” approach that Velma is alleged to have done, but managed to do so in a way that really allows them to explore the nuances that were always hidden within the character to begin with… making them feel like an exaggerated alternative to previous depictions. The best example would be in how Clayface’s performing arts background often takes a backseat to the trauma he suffers in being a monster, but in HQ, he really just relishes in the opportunities that his abilities provide him as far as self expression is concerned… he seems more liberated by his abilities than feeling cursed. If anyone has ever watched a role player in character creation for a new game, you probably found watching Clayface taking on a new form and imagining the back story for it to be a very familiar experience… if you are that role player… you probably found him relatable. Harley Quinn’s background in psychology actually becomes a core storytelling device within the show, used to explore both herself and other characters in a way that more serious projects have only recently tinkered around with, and not nearly to the same degree that the Harley Quinn show has. Harley Quinn’s traditional relationships with Joker, Batman and Poison Ivy all also get put under the microscope within the show kn a way that really feels in character for each of them within the context of their interactions for most of their story. The only one that really breaks from their character is when we get Suburban Step Dad Joker not going on a murderous rampage to get Batman’s attention… but then they use this to explore what a more law abiding Joker who turns his chaotic energy towards trying to improve his community… and does so purely out of spite over an entitled Karen. It is mature satire over a long beloved franchise, and it does carry political signaling in places, but anything is a potential target, and the jokes are actually clever enough to land, and everything is done out of a clear love for the source material.

Perfect breakdown of both. If you want to see a proper origin story deconstruction of the Scooby Doo cast- especially Velma, Watch Mystery Incorporated. In that show they actually veer into dangerous territory making her insufferable too, but then they USE it to tell a story about how that is bad and she comes to realize (like Puss for example), she was wrong. Like you, I actually had been thinking about how amazing it is that this so called "kids movie" does adult entertainment with something to actually say, better than supposed "adult" shows like Velma. It's really just pathetic and ironically more lazy than a kids movie.. because they aren't at all trying. They just do self inserts and crass jokes and lots of racism apparently, and thats adult somehow. Another legit 2d animated adult show that took it's job seriously was Invincible. It's got all the usual possible tropes, especially with being crass.. But characters have consequences for those attitudes, and the consequences are so extreme. The creators of Velma clearly hate animation, Scooby Doo, and just used it as a vehicle for their own BS. Really sad.

Great choice of comparisons. It's an old take, but I'd say that Mystery Incorporated Velma's personality tends to be closer to Daria: intelligent, socially awkward, and constantly dropping snarky one-liners. Also, despite the early 2010's animation industry not allowing them to be open about queer content, the series does a better job of showing a queer awakening than the new series in my opinion. Most importantly though, it's actually funny

I think one thing was that it also blew my expectations out of the water. I wasn't expecting to even care. I thought they were just milking a franchise like every other animation company. But knowing how Kung Fu Panda 3 wasn't that bad... I gave it a chance And boy was I blown away. I also love how as a studio they took the risk of doing a different art style than normal. It shows that there's real artistic talent that is making the creative decisions. Not just CEOs. Looking to find the next biggest profit.

The thing about Velma is that even the animation can be bad at times, even with just the clips I’ve seen it’s still rigid and the characters don’t move in interesting ways. But puss has so much detail and quality to its animation that you could watch a scene 10 times and you still wouldn’t get all the details

I specifically liked your point about how Puss was arrogant, full of himself, overconfident, yet still likable. Its rare for me to dislike characters. Like i only ever tend to dislike a character if they are narcissistic. Puss is like that, but I strangely never found myself annoyed or irritated by him, like I would be with other arrogant characters. Is the movie's writing just *that* good? That a character with a personality trope I always end up hating, is actually one of my favorite characters in the film?

Velma disguises major flaws in characters as qualities and personalities to more accurately reflect the people who made the show, while Puss in Boots reveals character quirks that people thought were qualities because most people have at least a bit of these deflect themselves as flaws and makes the character go through character development to fix them, also teaching the audience those lessons as well.

The problem is that studios just don't go their own direction anymore. They all copy each other until 1 studio takes a risk and goes their own direction, and when that risk hits and everyone loves it, every other studio then rush to copy it to try to pull the same success. Rick and morty did something different and got popular so now everyone's trying to copy the same meta, comedy shows. Spiderverse tried a new art style and everyone loved it, so now everyone's trying to copy this 2.5D animating style. And now that puss in boots has been a terrific hit because Dreamworks tried something new, you can bet your @$$ you're gunna see movies popping up later that tries to replicate what puss in boots did and likely fail to the point of annoying the audience.

The panic atack scene in poss in boots is so good that you are not watching a well potrayed panic atack, you are watching poss having a panic atack becuase death is upon him and perrito calming him down, giving a payoff for when he said he wanted to be a therapy dog. Meanwhile velma's is so bad that you are not watching velma having a panic atack and been calmed down by shaggy over the phone, but a writter forcing her main character have a panic atack and the only way she knew how to writter herself out the situation she put herself in is make another tool character open her heart to her and then having velma, the main character who is suposed to be the writter herself laught her ass to her best friend feeling and then calming down

What´s even better is what Perrito did is EXACTLY what therapy dogs do when you have panic attack - they do not try to get your attention, "snap you out of it", but lay their head on your chest (feeling the rythm of dogs calm breath helps to slow your breathing down as well), waiting until you calm down enough so you can react. So yes, even more added layer to this scene.

Fun fact, a massive inspirational part of The Last Wish is from influence of Into the Spiderverse! And I think it was the only saving grace for Puss considering the movies that were being churned out were so degrading for fans that, on the second I saw the title card for the first trailer, I skipped it because I assumed it would just be another cash grab. But, come to find out, it isn't! It's phenomenal, and I haven't even seen the full thing! Velma and Wednesday though? I'm never giving Velma a chance, already hate the person behind it because she took her tiny ounce of fame way too far to her head and this is why you need to check yourself before the money gets orgasmically insane in your mind. Wednesday? I couldn't watch it. It wasn't her at all. NOBODY in that show is an Addams member. It just.... It's been getting worse since that one less recent animated movie in 2019.

It also doesn't exactly help that in Velma, the messages they try to push don't match what they actually show. For example, they try to claim that handsome white guys have it so easy, but look at how Fred is actually treated throughout the show. There is child abuse (that comment about his dad putting cigars out on him), he's arrested without evidence, shot by the police, body shamed repeatedly, put on trial still without evidence, put in jail without evidence, tasered, he's bullied, his mother apparently planned to murder him (or stick his brain in a jar, which is not exactly better) because he isn't interested in running the business at 15 (or 13, if you consider that she's been working on this plan for a while) instead of just raising him better... Yes, they wrote him to be an unlikeable person (just like every other character on the show), but that doesn't change the fact that what they show undermines the "white guys have it so easy" message.

Just recently streamed Puss in Boots, I think this is a great step into demonstrating the potential of the animation medium as well as how to make a well rounded and entertaining story. Not going to bother with Velma but I can say that the meta characters trope was cool done as a rare exception. Like Deadpool was coo because he was lesser seen and hadn't really been done before. Clearly the industry is seeing this and saying "More of this=More money" but it's not the case when it lacks scarcity, and becomes the entire product.

Before Puss in Boots TLW I had pretty much given up on western animation. I can’t pinpoint exactly when it was, but, suddenly, the companies who use to set the bar could no longer scratch it. (Let’s face it, Disney is only surviving through its parks right now. Encanto was the creators’ success, NOT Disney.) Then I saw this. As I left the theater, I thought, “Finally. The Dreamworks who gave me ‘The Prince of Egypt’, ‘The Road to El Dorado’, ‘Chicken Run’, ‘Shrek 1 & 2’, ‘Kung Fu Panda’, etc. has returned.” I finally feel like the films of my childhood aren’t gone, & that they might even come back. In the extremely unlikely event that anyone from Dreamworks reads this post, please don’t stop. Look at the positive response from Puss in Boot TLW & recognize what your audience wants.

Puss in Boots 2 did such a great job explaining anxiety. When I saw Puss having a panic attack, I felt sad for him because I know how it feels. Your heart’s racing, you’re running out of breath, you can’t feel your body, and everything is just so painful! But then of course help is on the way. I know it may sound crazy…but there’s also another film that depicts anxiety very well in PAW Patrol: The Movie. Chase had a fair share of his anxiety of Adventure City. So, when they had to go there to stop Mayor Humdinger’s madness, when there was a Humdinger Hyperloop train coaster made and the passengers were trapped on there, Chase tried to save them, but realizing it was way too high, that’s when they depicted a panic attack VERY well! I’m not gonna lie, I love the movie and I felt very bad for Chase when he had that panic attack. Normally you’d think it would be a dog basically cowering in fear, but when you get reality distortion, sounds fading and a heartbeat speeding up frantically, that’s when Chase has that panic attack. There’s also another to name in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3. In one of Rocket’s flashbacks, when he frees Lylla, the High Evolutionary blasts her dead with a blaster, Rocket is wailing over this, and Floor begins having a panic attack while yelling “ROCKET, TEEFS, FLOOR, GO NOW!!!” over and over again. That broke my heart. Velma on the other hand sucked at explaining it. I do not wish to explain why.

I love that puss in boots does have social commentary but its not beating you over the head with it. Toxic masculinity has been a hot topic for the last few years: that men can't be weak or show emotions or vulnerability. Puss is a macho man caricature but he gets scared, runs away, panics, and TALKS ABOUT HIS EMOTIONS TO PERITTO and shows vulnerability and its never treated as a joke or unmanly. It was so profound and beautiful and i hope that young boys and men see this and start dialogues with each other and normalise opening up to each other about how they feel Gosh there's so much to this movie, there's just. so. much.
