This episode explores the extraordinary lengths people will go to in search of freedom, as Tony meets some of history's greatest escape artists. In 1800s Australia, destiny hinges on the flip of a coin as an influential pioneer risks his life in a duel. Next Tony reveals the bizarre disguise a convict adopted during his dash for freedom from Tasmania's notorious Port Arthur penal settlement. In the 20th century, Tony follows a harrowing chase across Victoria involving a famous racehorse and a gang with murder on its mind. From a daring World War II jailbreak to a well-timed political escape from a nuclear crisis, this is a rollicking time-travel ride.

My great great grandmother and grandfather met as prisoners in Port Arthur having being shipped out as convicts in 1849. One had stolen a shilling the other a coat belonging to his employer. One was sentenced for 14 years the other 7 years.They married as prisoners out there and my great grandfather and his 2 brothers were born out there.

@janreeves5956

Certain prisoners were put to work on farms for the settlers (non-convicts) - they mixed at these times. I am guessing that this is when they met. As my 3 times great grandmother only got 7 years she waited until my 3 times great grandfather was released. By this time they had been allowed to marry. My great grandfather and brothers were born out there. When his sentence was finished they saved and returned to England. Interestingly, he went out with the surname of Wallace but changed their names to surname Kent. I only recently learned that the ship they returned on was called the ‘Kent’. I actually have their prison records and both were model prisoners. I hope I may have answered a couple of your questions.

@Jan Reeves That is actually very helpful and super interesting. Thank you! So cool that you still have the documents too. How crazy that they got such ridiculous sentences for those crimes, but I'm glad they met and started a life together. I'd watch this movie for sure. Probably better than the Notebook. Ha!

My great great great grandfather in UK was put to death by hanging in 1823 for stealing a horse. The next year they stopped the death penalty by hanging. I guess if he waited a couple years maybe he would of been sent to Australia.

Interesting especially for its curious perpetuation of bias,. As though Tasmania were uninhabited & free for the taking, when the English stole the land and built Port Arthur prison there. To me that's quite a bit more than "interesting" . Why perpetuate that English myth? Remember, history stories vary according to who is telling the story .

Oh just cry about nothing why don't you. Gotta say, people today know NOTHING. Take it from a solitary confinement veteran, having to stay home where one has access to a tv and food is of no concern whatsoever. Try being forced into one 8' by 10' bedroom without ANY entertainment nor bathroom access for years on end by your own "birth giver". Try that for just 5 minutes, then come back and try to complain about public health safety measures. Your "mother" has not been starving you. She hasn't been placing a knife to your throat while explaining how easily she could get rid of you while smiling about it. You had to stay home for a seriously short period of time, fully allowed to eat and use a restroom AT WILL. Boo-hoo little spoiled babies. If I had it my way, the stay at home order would NEVER be lifted. If only just for spite. 12 years I spent locked in one single room. And that is just the nice part of it. Your generation was doomed before the diapers came off. No clue what real problems are. No clue what real suffering is. Spoon fed and coddled to the point where NOT spreading a virus is incorrectly viewed as a "bad" thing. You are doomed and your elders NO LONGER CARE. The last 30 years has pushed us into the realm of not giving a crap. Unlimited access to unlimited information, yet we hear such false nonsense such as "the virus is fake" and "earth is flat". Yea... we are going to watch your generation completely fall apart before we check out. We'll need something to laugh about on the other side.

@theon9575
@theon9575 2 года назад
😂🤣 His Majesty's prisons (as they were formally called), were built like that to give them a (misleading) veneer of respectability, sir. Brick piles signifying justice and punishment. And, at the time it was built, Port Arthur prison did not really house many of the worst of society at all. It housed petty criminals (for misdemeanours you might get a small fine for today), and also political prisoners to keep them silent far from England.

Interesting doco and well presented. But it takes the usual racist British view of English colonial and Empire history. Although prisoners were cruelly treated and many died, this was nothing compared to the cruelty and murders perpetrated on the Aboriginal people from whom England stole the land on which the Port Arthur Prison stands by force! Later, they put a bounty on the heads of Aboriginal people for their genocidal murder and systematic eradication from Tasmania. Like vermin rabbits! If it were shame that prevents these truths from being told, it would not be so bad. But it's an inhuman British disregard, even today, for the fact that the land on which this prison stands was stolen from its then owners by force by the English, who remain unashamed and unapologetic. Second, although descendants of these prisoners prefer nowadays to think they were imprisoned and transported for crimes as trifling as stealing a handkerchief, and victims of an unjust legal system, many were actually political prisoners, and Port Arthur and Botany Bay were convenient distant places to exile and silence them . Also, at Australian primary school, I learned fast that Australians prefer to call these prisoners "convicts" although it's never explicitly explained why. 😂
@RuminatingWizard
@RuminatingWizard 2 года назад
Why when ANY other civilization takes over the lands of another civilization, it's called conquering but if it's done by a white civilization it's called stealing? 🤔
@theon9575
@theon9575 2 года назад
@@RuminatingWizard ah, very good question .... thank you ... First, I don't see skin colour such as "white" as relevant here, and also we're talking here about just one country (England), not a whole civilisation. Second, we're talking about Colonialism and countries here, not civilizations battling it out, and one conquering the other (eg Muslim civilization conquering Byzantin Empire etc). Colonialism was very popular in Europe at the time (18th C). .... the French colonised Indo-China, the Italians Algeria, and the Dutch colonised and took over what is now Indonesia, the Belgians colonised the Congo, the Spanish in south America, etc etc. Taking those countries' wealth back home to Europe. Usually also enslaving locals, or transporting enslaved Africans to generate wealth. Bleeding the colonised country dry, and impoverishing the people.. The most successful colonisers (NOT conquerers, because as above, that involves war and battles, a winner, treaty and peace) were the English or British who exploited and took over the most parts of the world, including Canada, swathes of Africa, Caribbean, North America, New Zealand , and so on, and ultimately the Queen of England was declared Empress of India and head of the British Empire . HOWEVER, English own law, stipulated that, when a new place was to be colonised, a Treaty of Agreement must be made with the current owner/residents. This occurred everywhere such as with Canadian and Manahatta Indians, NZ Maori etc etc. BUT when the English arrived at Botany Bay (now Sydney) and Port Arthur (Tasmania), even though Aboriginal people fought to defend their land, FALSE reports were sent to London saying that the land was uninhabited, TERRA NULLIUS. The big English LIE, enabling them to take the land anyway WITHOUT ANY TREATY OR RECOGNITION THAT THE LAND WAS ALREADY INHABITED AND OWNED. And then, as I commented, the English embarked on a horrific program of systematic poisoning for the successful ethnic cleansing of Tasmania. This is not conquering, this is stealing land and ethnic cleansing. To this very day, the Constitution of Australia makes no mention of the people who owned the land for some 50,000 years, but suddenly it was populated in 1788. LOL It is in this sense that the land was "stolen", and I am not alone to use that word. A conquest involves a battle or war of some kind, for one party to win, and for both parties to sign a surrender and agree on terms and conditions for peace. The British broke their own colonial laws to steal this land in this way, and any decent moral code by their systematic rat-poisoning of Tasmanians for ethnic cleansing. Ethnic cleansing is unacceptable and illegal by any international law or any moral standard. The German attempt to ethnically cleanse Jews is, for example, a similarly disgusting act, nothing to do with legitimate war and settlement. The English, to this very day, like to pretend it never happened. And the Australian Constitution is still based on this lie in its Pre-amble. Also this video implies original owners of that land of Port Arthur are neatly exterminated and not worth mentioning. Again, thanks for asking. The Aboriginal people of Australia today continue to live in appalling conditions and poor health in one of the richest countries in the world. Dispossessed of their land. Nobody "conquered" anyone. Today January 26 "celebrates" Australia Day, the day the English arrived to take over in 1788. The Aborigines were "invisible". So today is Australian Aborigines' day of mourning. They have my deepest sympathies .
