What was lost when the LDS Church started emphasizing covenants over community

Since shortening its Sunday services and refocusing its curriculum more than five years ago, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has trumpeted a home-centered, church-supported approach with an emphasis on covenant-making and covenant-keeping.
This shift has some members worried about a loss of community.
Gone are roadshows, pageants, sports leagues, cultural celebrations and more. While there has been an explosion of temple building, there has been a slowdown in chapel building. The church meetinghouse of today has become just that - a house for staid and stiff meetings, mainly on Sunday - and not the buzzing and bustling community centers of yesteryear.
Would a return to some of that past help not only the church’s present but also its future?
Candice Wendt, a staff member of McGill University’s Office of Religious and Spiritual Life and a contributing editor at Wayfare magazine, wrote about the church’s evolution from community to covenants in a recent blog post for Exponent II.
She joined us for this week’s episode of “Mormon Land” to talk about what she sees as lost in the church’s efforts to emphasize individual covenants over community building.
“I find when community connection and belonging get weak,” she said, “motivation to be engaged in the faith tradition falters, and religious life actually becomes a lot less relevant to people.”

Great, more meetings/activities and less instruction. My kids have weekly activities, we help clean our chapel, we have scripture study and prayer at night, and attend church on Sunday. I don’t live in Utah so most of my kid’s friends aren’t LDS. Between school, sports, music, and community activities, they have a lot of community interaction. They are noticed as good people. I think that this is better than isolating as a ward. Just my 2cents.

The church realized it could save money by eliminating its church janitors and landscapers and make its own members do all the work when its the most successful business on the planet. This is greedy and horrible. I love the Gospel but I'm so disappointed in our current leaders, they are driving the church into the ground!

I think you just voiced what I have been feeling but you said it more eloquently. When my children were young, the church was everything for our time. We helped with BSA projects and had linger longer lunches at church, they helped me with setting up Homemaking events etc. As they became teens, the church became a Sunday place to go with a weekly activity that was becoming more irrelevant for them. Now that they are gone, the church has no hold for me because there is no community and I don't need or want the type of elderly activities they offer (empty nesters). I have been saying I have outgrown what the church offers, and I don't need the church to be spiritually in tune with a heavenly power. The church of my youth is so different from the youth of my children and even more drastically different from the church of my grandchildren.

Maybe it was only me, and whoever else had an interaction with that temple worker. I heard of a phenomena which sometimes happens, sometimes LDS people feel burdened from being called to duties which require so much time and attention. I guess they eventually get resentful. I think I was an easy target as a child for them to take it out on me. I did immediately get the symbolism as a child after seeing how my father was dressed in the sealing room. But after all these years, it just seems like 'make believe;' for adults.

This episode really hit home. I frequently find myself thinking about Christ teaching the Pharisees that the Sabbath was made for man, and not man for Sabbath. I also thinking about the frustrated, duty-bound Martha and Jesus teaching that Mary chose the better part. I don’t feel those teachings in today’s Church. It feels more like members are a resource to be consumed than sprouting plants to be nurtured.

I have felt this way for so long- the church I remember as a young convert and the church community my family experienced as I was raising my children is gone. There are very few activities anymore, the church feels very corporate, very distant. Our Ward has been accused of being “unfriendly.” But I think that’s most wards nowadays.

So grateful for covenants which bind us to Christ, bind us to community, and bind us to family. Covenants have been extended by the Lord as a means to bring community closer together since the beginning of time: think of Adam, who received promises of the Lord concerning his posterity unto the last generation of the earth; think of Noah who received a covenant from the Lord to never again destroy the people through flood; think of Abraham, the father of the Abrahamic Covenant, who received promises regarding his family that would "bless the whole earth"; think of Moses, Daniel, Samuel, and a host of others until Christ who extended the "new testament" (which literally means covenant) which he commanded to be renewed through the tokens of his flesh and blood. . . I haven't watched this video, but if they are saying that the Lord's Church is emphasizing covenants with God--they are absolutely right. If they are saying that comes at the cost of community, they are not right.

I love this podcast and newsletter! I just wanted to share a few thoughts. In my view, there simply seems to be a generational shift with all institutions - religious, political, academic, financial and even career. I haven’t seen much of a loss correlating to a shift in faith emphasis. I don’t know that I’ve experienced a disconnect with the community as a result of the emphasis on the covenant path or the increase in temple building; and I don’t feel any pressure to trust church leaders. The emphasis has always been to turn one’s will over to God and the church just offers ways to do that. I actually feel less pressure to conform my idea of God to that of the stake young men’s president or the bishop, for examples. If there has been strong admonition for completing accountable checklists from the church that is causing members to feel pressure or anxiety - I think members can identify it for what it is and move on (no more duty to God or visiting teaching follow ups). I do experience feelings of emptiness with callings, tithing, weekly worship attendance, raising children, fasting, ministering, daily gospel study, FHE, etc., but I think it says more about how accustomed and stimulated I’ve become to modern conveniences than any change in the church. Combined with that, I think the loss of loving attention just comes with becoming adults - especially in a digital world. Previously, being a parent used to mean you had access to the best and most trusted information, not just for your own kids but of others too. Now, there are hardly “words of wisdom” that inspire or impress the youth, and connecting with them is just different from what we experienced.

So when Christ comes, will He ask when the Roadshows are scheduled? President Nelson recently said we are at the bottom of the 9th inning. That is significant. What should we be about? Check the Bible. You will find a lot of covenant language there. Community can still be fostered, just in different ways. Candace, if your children are feeling left out because they don't fit in you need to talk to their teachers to solve the problem. What have you taught them about temple marriage and why that is the best choice? My son waited a year before going on a mission. My husband and I let him have that year because he wasn't ready, then we talked about him getting on with his life. I told him that he needed to pray and make a choice. I trusted God to answer him. He made the choice to serve a mission and it was the best thing he did to become a better man he is almost 20 years later. He wasn't brainwashed or forced. He was taught to gain his own witness. I hope your children know that as well. They need to have choices, but also explore consequences of those choices.
