Water ingress into the higher-level boxes can allow water to wick down the cable cores into the lower boxes, so even if the lower boxes seem watertight, the cable itself can be the cause of ingress. I'd also be questioning the integrity of the SWA at that point as the armouring itself could be badly corroded internally. As for swapping out the PIR for photocell - you may find it work fine as daylight is a lot brighter than anything those spotlights put out so the sensor might not actually be affected by it too much.

Choc box is only IP20. Only a muppet would use those outside.

Hi. If I wanted some up and down lights on my house how would you go about fitting then. Would a load of holes need to be drill through the wall to the in side of house and cables buried in plaster to power supply or would cables from light need to go through cavity and come out under upstairs floor space and then joined into lighting circuit. I can’t seem to get an answer from anyone how it would be achieved. TIA

Hey Chris, have you tried the Pratley boxes that TLC sell for external waterproof armour and NYY tough cable joints? Really good solution, and in my experience you don't need to fill them with gunk to keep them dry.

I believe the “ old fashioned” lights are far better than the up/down ones as the old type provided much better illumination what’s it is needed, unless of course the client wants to light up the brickwork 😂😂😂

Some cowboy so called electrician that done these fittings and ripped off the customer. Good to see you can sort it out without too much messing around. Maybe be able to re - fit new boxes and up rated connectors for the lights. Looks good so far. 👍🏻

13:30 when you put the new boxes on, put a drain hole on the bottom. That way any water coming into the box can at least drain out. 😁👍 What a mess, lots of rust on that SWA cable.
