I know many of you hate the Disney Dub, but I had to use it for fairness. Disney movies are available in both Flemish and Dutch. Therefore they would be spoken with almost the same words in almost the same voice and tone. This way people can focus on the sound of the language without other factors that may cloud their judgement.

I have bene told that flemish people have a very rich Germanic origin that they tend to not be aware of. I'm just putting it out there for whoever is not aware but interested: The Flemish people have Frisian, Saxon, and Suebi origin amongst other germanic tribes. Many customs are still very Frisian and the sound of Flemish speech resembles Saxon and those other tribes. those origins have been erased from history or never documented at all because those tribes were non-christian, and the Franks wanted to get rid of everything germanic and non-christian. I have a very good source for whoever is interested in piecing together their actual origins.

Tbh The flemish spoken in frozen, is the standard flemish that basically no ones speaks except for maybe educators (for some reason kid shows have been getting that more compared to 10 years ago, it annoys me, it sounds unnatural) . You can hear the difference much more between Simba and Timone&Pumba in the Dutch version of the Lion King, Timone and Pumba speak flemish one would actually speak in daily life.

Uhm sorry but not everybody speaks a dialect in belgium. There are many people that I know that speak really good Flemish. Me too, I live in next to brussels and for us it is normal to talk the right "algemaan nederlands" sometimes we use dialects that we pick from friends from other towns but we have no weird words that you could misunderstand we just speak faster than people with a dialect

I'm from Vlaams Brabant as well, I stand by what I said. 'Algemeen nederlands' is perhaps close to Vlaams brabants but it is certainly not the same. Vlaams brabants is a dialect btw no on speaks algemeen nederlands, Algemeen nederlands is just based on the dialects from vlaams brabant.

I'm from West-Flanders, so I understand what is being said in the 'Gerrit Callewaert' sketch (but most Flemish people out of West-Flanders don't, and that's what this sketch is about, that West-Flemish people always get subtitled on tv, and Gerrit Callewaert (played by Wim Opbrouck) is protesting against that fact, in these videos).. :P It's from a really good satiric show 'In de Gloria' (In the Gloria). One sketch (the Eric Hartman Boomerang host that laughs at his guests) got even famous in Amercia, when people over there thought it was real! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lUado9iEwLA.html

Blauruman I do, for some reason. I really like listening to Dutch(including Flemish but I prefer the guttural), Scandinavian languages and German. Sometimes I listen to youtube videos of people talking in those languages like music, without understanding a single word. Not just because they are guttural, but also the rhythms. I can't explain too well, I'll probably make a vlog about it when I figure out a way to explain it. I'm actually pretty indifferent to the romance languages. Unless I am watching the God Father or Breaking Bad, then I would have short bursts of interest in Italian or Spanish.

Flemish and Dutch came from the Franks(West-Germanic tribe that went to Flanders for the rich farming lands). Flemish is a very very old language. General Flemish and Dutch(Neder Frankish) are very related to old English, more then old Gothic. Angels, Saxons and Franks were Germanic family languages. The first Belgians were Celtic people and spoke Belgian Celtic languages. Their DNA is mixed now with the DNA of the Franks and Danish vikings on the sea coast. Many flemings married Brittisch soldiers during WOI.

Dutch is increasingly weird to Flemish people, Dutch people keep making their accent heavier and heavier, while Flemish has remained completely soft in tone. There is no gurgling in Flemish, while Dutch is full of it. And since the G is so common, this difference is really apparent. BTW, don't say to Flemish people that the language is "Dutch spoken in Belgium". Flemish is considered it's own language, you'll offend people if you say it is "Belgian Dutch".

My ex bf came from the west of flanders, and spoke 'west flemish' ... I came from the east, our borders collide with each other. But our dialects are so different. So different even, the dialect spoken in my exes region is more prominent compared to the official dutch language, even teachers speak dialect to their students. It took me 4 years to understand him in his dialect (apparantly he had the most difficult one), and after 9 I still couldn't understand lots of parts ... west flemish has different dialects as well, each city has it's own dialect basicly and specific words, and some words don't even contain one similar letter to the orignal Dutch word. I can understand more west flemish dialects, but my ex bfs the least XD.

Edith Lansens Huh? "ge" is far more common than "je", all over Flanders, not just East Flanders. "82 percent of the younger informants questioned report that they use "ge" when addressing their parents (Kremer 2000: 18,21). 64.96 percent of the East-Flemish and 78.43 percent of the Brabant Flemish. Standard Dutch JE-paradigm 35.72 % 20.48 % 16.51 % Belgian Dutch GE-paradigm 63.48 % 16 79.5 % 83.48 %" More than 83% of people in Flanders use "ge" instead of "je", as you can see. Another interesting fact is that more and more people are choosing to use "ge" over "je", the younger generation is even higher than 83%, also well over 90% use "uw" instead of "jouw". "The pronoun "je" and its strong variants "jij, jou and jouw" have still not been assimilated to the extent that they are treated as endogenous forms by speakers of Belgian Dutch. On the contrary, they are still considered to be Netherlandic (Hollandic) import."
@edithjeeeh
@edithjeeeh 9 лет назад
Those regions indeed say ge, but here, in West-Flanders we all say 'je'. People will start laughing when you suddenly say 'ge' 'cause it sounds so weird. But I don't know the exact numbers so I can't really say much about the rest of Belgium :)
@adrianak.91
@adrianak.91 9 лет назад
Edith Lansens Yes, West Flanders is a slight exception. But all other regions prefer "ge" and "uw" in all circumstances. "In West-Flan-ders, the "je" forms are slightly in the majority in object function, but in possessive function they give way to the "ge" -paradigm, represented by possessive uw. East-Flanders, Brabant and Limburg now clearly constitute a fairly homogeneous region: object "u" and possessive "uw", both of them being the endogenous Belgian Dutch variants representing the "ge" -paradigm, get frequency scores of 80 percent and more in those regions." .
@edithjeeeh
@edithjeeeh 9 лет назад
In possessive function we use 'uw' when te conversation is formal, and 'jouw/je' when informal. When, for instance, we're talking to a friend we will say : "Mag ik je notities lenen?" (Can I lend your notes?) When we're talking to someone who demands respect like a teacher, employer,... we will say : "Ik heb uw documenten bekeken." (I've looked at your documents)

Heritage Inmoshun The West-Flemish is not really a represtentation of "Flemish", because lots of people in Flanders don't even understand it. "Flemish" is a collection of dialects, but they actually differ quite a lot. If you hear "plat Aantwaarps" (the dialect from Antwerp) it's totally diffrent: for example, Aantwaarps has more French words and sounds.

Heritage Inmoshun The funny part is that you are using a well know clip in your video about a guy from West Flanders who is frustrated because every time somebody from West Flanders is on TV, they put sub titles under it. And there is a reason for. Because it is sometime really hard to understand. So it is very local dialect of one Provence. Quit difference then typical Flemish. FYI: The clip comes from a comedy show, so it is an actor. Have you the full translation?

Looks like nobody mentions how we in Flanders and the people in Netherlands are like people from Britain and America (even though this is a bigger group of accents and dialect But I'm talking about the average English and American accent). That's the best way to explain it. American English had a lot of influences because of a lot of people migrating to America back in the day. Flemish has a lot of French influences due to us being part of the French kingdom for a very long time. This was especially a problem after the French Revolution during the Congress of Vienna. King Willem wanted Flanders because it was originally part of the Dutch kingdom. But we Flemings didn't like Willem very much. And soon after in 1829-1830 we became one country along with a French region (Wallonia) and became Belgium. The French influences are very clear when you look at my dialect (Aalsters, or how we say it "Oilsjters"). Here's a song about my dialect you'd maybe like to see: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7JH1jVyVnQM.html Maybe it'd be interesting for you guys of Heritage Inmoshun to do something about Aalsters. It’s as different as dutch and german are, they’re totally different languages in my opinion (it’s just really offending, stop it...) Dear uploader, i do like your video, i'm just sorry for all the offended and chauvinistic people in the comment section. don't take them serious, the main problem is that both nations both aren't confortable with the other's accents. unfortunatly, this leads to some formes of slight hate against eachother. If any belgians or dutch people are reading this. Please stop giving a sh*t, it's JUST a language, none of the accents is better than the other. There are much more things to worry about in our lifes than if our flemish is considered a "language" or "dutch with an accent", or which accent is "the best". All this patriotism leads to nothing more than discrimination and hate against eachother, so there's no need to defend anyting. sincerely. a half belgian/half dutch guy.

the west flemish you use in the beginning of your clip (with the guy speaking) is actually a dialect which is only spoken at the coastal area in flanders (West-Vlaanderen). Lots of other flemish people don't even understand the West-Vlaams; especially not people that live in the Limburg province; they have a slower articulation and go up and down all the time; we actually say "they're singing instead of talking" I live in Antwerp; the biggest city of Flanders (most central city too, and second city of the country); the whole flemish population understands our dialect because it's so popularized on tv; it's the only dialect that's almost never subtitled.

Problem was that West Flemish is not what you hear in the Disney movies. You hear standard Flemish. Wear Flemish people are subtitled in Belgium and most definitely in the Netherlands. Afterwards, you should have also showed German. It's much softer that the way people stereotype it. All because of Hitler, who used shouting and a rougher manner of speech to cover up for his own linguistic complex

Wtf is Flanders? You do not translate a name^^ we don't say nieuw york of verloren engelen(ik weet het ik maak gewoon een punt!!), that's just not how it works. The name is Vlaanderen. And i have 1 simple fact why Vlaams (flemish) schould be considered better than Nederlands(dutch), simply every Vlaming(someone living in Vlaanderen) can speak and understand Nederlands but Nederlanders(people living in nederland) can't speak nor understand Vlaams therefore Vlaams is the superior language both in a normal as in a strategic point of view, we own them in their own game, I rest my case^^

All Dutch dialects of Flanders do cross the border with The Netherlands. The West Vlaams dialect is a continuum with Zeeuws (spoken in Zeeland, NL), as well as the Brabant and the Limburg dialect in Belgium and the Netherlands. I guess maybe Brussels Dutch, spoken originally by a majority of the people in Brussels, has a very distinct own sound that doesn’t have a counterpart in the Netherlands. In the North of the Netherlands there are more dialects that do not exist in Belgium, like the “Nedersaksisch” (Nether Saxon) dialect spoken in the North East of the Netherlands.

West-Flemings are softer, more gentle then in Holland but absurd(this was funny). I am a Fleming of Vlaams-Brabant, we speak the most general Flemish when we don't speak dialect. Limburg is also very gentle and soft(they sing more). Vlaams-Brabant is Bourgondic, Antwerps is more like the Americans.

+Can Gerek Hate to break it to you, but East Flemish is basically standard Dutch, but with flat vowels and "waar?" added at the end of every sentence X-D. Seriously, you should consider coming back home with us "West Flemish"; we can then rename it "Flemish" as it's supposed to be called.
@StorkToons
@StorkToons 8 лет назад
East-Flemish itself is not a dialect. Far from it. Neither is West-Flemish, but at least we get the idea of what it is. East-Flemish is hard to imagine as an accent. I come from Aalst, and my standard Flemish sounds a lot different than someone from Ghent or Sint-Niklaas

Hi. i recently read a study that proves that West flemish Has Frisian and saxon origin, and some other germanic tribes. You are correct that it is not a dialect. Dutch and flemish both have the same origin in old Frisian and saxon which means that flemish is NOT a dialect. The people who we now call west-flemish were frisian a thousand years ago. I understand that this history is unknown to the flemish people because the ones who wrote history were Frankish Christians who were less than fond of the Heathen Frisians and other germanic tribes. I can give you a link to the study if you are interested.
