they're screwed no matter which way you slice it. suppose he takes 8million for 8 years. they'll give Mcdavid 18 million and Bouchard 12 million. roughly 50% of their cap will be tied up in four players. it's too much. this is Draisaitl's ONLY chance to lock up a value contract for himself, as once it kicks in he's turning 30. only downhill from there. it's unreasonable to ask him to accept anything less than 14million, not when passengers like Nurse are robbing them of an undeserved 4.25 million every year. and then you have the 'goalie' selling games like it's an everyday fire sale. they should trade Draisaitl to an eastern team for one of their elite goaltenders. can't give him a contract he deserves and ice a competitive roster also.

There are many situations out there that are way better than Edmonton. Almost all of the US has better tax and/or financial situations. More than a third of the league actually has a reasonably good starting goaltender with consistent track records. Every other team in the league doesn't have a boat anchor of a cap hit on defense. And from an outside perspective, it's better for Draisaitl to not play on a team with McDavid as both players make Cup winner money without actually winning the Cup, which is very unhealthy for a team's cap who wants to contend for the Cup. You look at Crosby and Malkin, the best comp in the cap era and both took less money to compete.
@SupremeCleave

The fact they are already talking to Drai's team before the playoffs were over I think is a good sign, I do agree that Connor and Leon will likely want to be together regardless where, I think that is Edmonton. I think there are two problems in dealing Nurse, 1. He is one of Connor's close friends, 2. he has a 10 team trade list clause. So likely that means he will not want to be dumped into a team that likely can afford to take that salary (San Jose, Anaheim, or some other duldrums team with cap space to spare). So it is easy to SAY trade nurse. Hard to do.

Leon's decision is directly tied to McDavid's who is a year behind. They already know if they are resigning. There is no way Leon wants to stay without Connor and vise versa, so they will agree with each other before they tell the team. I expect they will resign.

Yeah but that's not interesting to talk about because we all know that. Those guys have to decide whats important to them. If they want to stick around and take less to do it to try and take another swing at it they can, but otherwise they are gone. Florida can't afford to resign them. Draistl's situation has a lot more complexity. Does he want to continue being the second best player on McDavids team and make less for the pleasure of that. Or does he want to go and be the best player on any other team in the entire league and make a max contract? Does he believe he can win on this team or does he believe they'll never get over the hump? Is he okay riding shotgun or does he want to be the man? The face of a franchise?

The bigger debate is how it impacts McDavid's future. 2 years left on his deal. If Draisaitl leaves, does that mean McDavid leaves Edmonton in 2026? That is the fear that Oilers fans don't want to think about. I know it's a different situation, but Pronger got traded out of town after the 2006 Finals. Ryan Smyth was out of Edmonton by the 2007 Trade Deadline. That team took years to recover from that - basically until they drafted Connor in 2015. What led to Tavares leaving Long Island in 2018 was all the years of trying to make the team better around Tavares, but not making his job easier. Does McDavid's job become easier if Leon is gone? And if they can't get the right pieces in place, does that further inflame things? E-Kane, Campbell, and Nurse are making close to $20 million combined (AAV). That's a lot of money. And all 3 guys have at least 2-3 years left on those deals. Nurse is easily another 5 years. How are you going to make significant changes with all that cash going to 3 guys that are coming off of rough campaigns?
@exturkconner
@exturkconner 3 месяца назад
@@stephenellsworth964 I mean that's not really a debate at all. They can't force Leon to stay. If he decides he wants to go he'll go. The Oilers don't really have any control over that. The most they can do to entice him if offer a max term and cap deal. But if he decides he doesn't want to be in that situation an extra couple million isn't likely to resolve it. And you'd have a year to use the cap saving of not having Draistl to try and prove to McDavid you can make it work.

If Draisaitl is going to demand some Toronto-esque garbage of 20% of the team's salary cap, I would happily watch him get dealt. $14 or $14.5M, could get you two very, VERY good players. If he's going to hold the team hostage, well, there's the door. Toronto should be a glaring example of what happens when you spend 60% of your salary cap, on 5 guys. Draisaitl deserves his raise, but really, it shouldn't be in Edmonton, imo.

There's no state income tax in Florida, and even a "dick" contract allows the player to keep all of their earnings. Edmonton, and or any other Canadian team cannot compete with this.

To make things fair, they should abolish income taxes in the rest of the US and Canada. The money is just used for wars anyway.

There's also no public social services in Florida. Believe it or not, this is a turn-off for some people. I would imagine this might be a bigger factor for many European players.

Repeating in the west is so much harder then the east. The depth in the west is insane. Teams that everyone talks about as being great in the east on paper are not good teams. See Boston they are a contender in that conference and are looking to sign the 3rd line center from a west team that didn’t make it out of round 2 to be their top guy.

Draisatl, Nurse and a 1st end pick for Dahlin and Lukkonen. Use the cap difference to sign Guentzel. And Montour. Oh look goalie, Dmen and heart upfront. Also lotsa cash to sign Mcjesus next year,

Steve said the oilers got good performance out of depth. That’s what it takes. It’s never the superstars. It’s always a battle of the guys punching way above their salary. Like floridas d. Verheage rodrigues. Cups are won by depth.

I like him he’s a good player. I hope he signs the contract I hope he stays. If he gets traded then who’s next it won’t be Connor his is until 2026 he likes playing for Edmonton. If Leon does get traded which we don’t know if he does or not but if he does it will be like it was after Gretzky got traded then Messier and the others. Let’s all just not make any predictions let’s all just wait until next year in June. No one knows only he knows what he wants to do who to play for.

He'll leave if he was smart. Canadastan is a horrid place to play and live. Why would you want to stay? There's tons more negatives in staying than leaving for the states.

The NHL need to somehow make it that ALL PLAYERS get paid through an NHL home base address so EVERYONE gets taxed the same, making it less of an advantage for teams in certain States, or Countries for that matter

You look at that team make up with that $9.25m/y cap dump on the blue line...that team's lineup has no business being in the Final missing maybe 4 core players.

It'd make sense to trade Drai since RNH can slot into a 2nd line C role... But how can EDM possibly get fair value in return? What would they need? A star goalie, a solid top pairing dman, and a forward who can score along with at least 1 first rounder would probably be a fair ask. But that'd take a multi-team trade
