What will the GSX build look like?

It's a monster pile of billet goodies! Custom made-to-order parts. Proof of how the wait times associated with parts like these are worth every second of anticipation. We kick around some of the differences between Mitsubishi cylinder heads, surface finish possibilities, I show a bead blasted example of a cylinder head, and I fully explain why I'm particular about the cam angle sensor I intend to use. I watch some of the fastest people on the planet, see the fastest DSM on the planet, and bust out the old 7-bolt for the first time in 10 years. ALL of the GSX engines are in this one video. And by all, I mean both.
The parts in this video were funded over time by my earnings from Patreon. You can see what kind of impact these wonderful people are making on what you see. If you'd like to become a sponsor to make this even better, please visit / jafromobile .
The parts featured in this video all speak for themselves. I have nothing but respect for their manufacturers. If you wish to hear what they have to say about them, or how much money was spent putting this together excluding what I already had... here are the links!

Jafro you have no idea how much the video means to me. I’m one of the “classy dsm warriors” with my best friend and my other friend. My best friend Jason the older gentleman and I were in a car accident in his dsm and he didn’t make it. Every picture and video means so much to me and who would of known 2 years later in one of my favorite RU-vid channels half asleep I see one of my favorite moments of my life. Being at my first shootout with my best friend and meeting two of my idols and YOU caught it on film. I just want to thank you Jafro for everything you do.

Absolutely love your attitude. Completely restores my drive to continue modifying my PT Cruiser after recieving next to zero recognition for any of the hard work I put into it. Usually only close friends do who take the time to actually learn about every single thing I've done (and there is alot). I've got my own stockpile of parts for a turbo swap, literally waiting on the Turbo to come back from the best rebuilder in the buisness for srt4 turbos. Then it's slapping parts together and getting it tuned. Sorry, rambling about myself. Jafro, keep these videos comming, I will watch ever single one forever.

I always marveled at the similarities between the PT and the DSM's 420A. In 2000, I toyed with the idea of frankensteining my old GS, but lacking money and ability, I went for the cheaper route and bought a GSX instead. I know what the weaknesses of the 420A were, and like you said... (it is a lot). It IS a LOT of work, and in a MUCH tighter space on that PT chassis than I had to worry about with a DSM. So what I'm saying is... You are even more resilient than I am. I built a far worse car than most everyone reading this, and it's one of the most fun cars I've ever driven in my life. The important thing is that YOU are having the fun. Don't forget that!
@XboxUnitD77
@XboxUnitD77 2 года назад
@@Jafromobile you can (with a slight bit of work) put a 420A head on a PT. The difference being the exhaust values would point towards the front of the car. Useful for really larger turbos you can't squeeze between the firewall and the engine. @Boostedburrito i think is doing this in his 800hp PT because he couldnt fit a larger turbo without it. Most normal people don't have to though. The PT's engine (and by extension the srt4) uses some mitsubishi enfluence. Not sure exactly how much, but the 2.0L in the neon was a Mitsubishi engine and the 2.4L uses a TD04 Mitsubishi turbo. There was some design cross over, not exactly sure how much, but you do find similarites here and there.

Its such a fun car! It hurt my soul a little to interrupt it with the Hyundai, but that was such a necessary shift for the people watching to learn from because I got to demonstrate what its original builder proved... that you can build a performance engine with stock parts. What's worse... you can re-use those factory parts that were in it when it blew up [sometimes] and do it again. Most people can't justify or afford the parts that are in this video, and while they're wonderful, powerful eye candy... there was so much more to learn from rebuilding the Hyundai that can be classified as essential knowledge that we can't get from this build. Topics like valve clearance, lobe separation angles, factory wiring, and setting up ECMlink with Speed Density. The evolution of import tuning advanced further over this decade than it did for the previous 2 decades so there may be a huge payoff for the wait. Thank you for being a long-hauler!

Devin is a PRO! So many others might have wiped that rear-left quarter from failing to react quickly enough to stop it. To be that caught up in the finals... pushing for your 6-second pass, and lined up against Grannas [of all opponents], watching that tree and preparing for flight... and still have that level of focus to launch, break, react, and stop that thing without incident... This guy isn't along for the ride, he's mastered physics, and that car is now a part and extension of him.

Jafro- I came upon your channel about a month back now and wanted to wait until the next upload to comment, so I hope you read this. Thank you for all your work and careful documentation of your process. I had to go back and watch from the beginning, particularly your engine inspection and assembly-focused videos, because you provide an engaging insight and straightforward presentation of your own build and modification theories that I’ve never experienced before. Something new to learn in every video, they’re incredibly helpful and you’re a massive inspiration to my own drawn out project, a 2nd Gen Camry with a 3rd Gen V6 swap and turbo build going in. Though it’s a completely different platform it’s been easy to apply your thought process to my own, and you’ve reinforced my drive to build a restomod for my own love of the build, if nothing else. You’ve also influenced my decision to take the car to the strip later on in order to give me a real-world idea of the power I’m putting down and give myself a bar to work against and measure improvement, something that hadn’t occurred to me before. (A little newb to the whole car building thing) I’m starting my own automotive channel to document this and any future builds, and the content I can only hope to be half as funny and engaging as yours. Thanks again for your contribution to the culture, I’ll watch your channel until the end of time.

It's called creative problem solving. It's addictive! Especially with sleeper builds. 3VZ-FE, eh? That's one way to keep things simple and predictable. Prolly need a coil upgrade for the added turbo cylinder pressure, but that's so much easier than EFI on the 2nd gen it's a no-brainer. Very stealth swap because most people don't know what's under a Camry's hood, they only fixate on the dent in the corner of the rear bumper. I love it!
@torstenpearson1996
@torstenpearson1996 2 года назад
@@Jafromobile that you can name the v6 impresses me even more lol. It might be the most obscure engine I’ve ever attempted to research, and it doesn’t help that the infamous pickup 3vz-e has more of an aftermarket and following and we only got the FE in the US for two years. From a logistical standpoint it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, as the MZ is more plentiful and modern, and the GR even more so. I’d like to tackle those one day but my logic going into this was keeping the platform as vintage as possible, so going from the 2vz to 3vz was my conclusion from that aspect. Restomod first, sleeper second. The amount of second-guessing and self doubt you go through to commit to that is insane though. After the engine is swapped and running good NA and datalogging is up, and after some bolt-on and non-internal mods, I’ll be converting to standalone. The 5vz comes in handy here, it’s distributorless cam and crank trigger and sensors swap over pretty easily to the distributor-ignited 3vz. Legend has it the 3vz was heavily detuned from the factory in order to not compete with the contemporary JZ that was coming out, and I think it’ll be interesting to see if there’s truth to it. Plenty of mythbusting to do along the way. Audi R8 coils are the popular option for COP. Then I’ll throw some budget mild boost at the factory setup to see what’s possible. 5psi max is the figure cited most places so I’ll run that for awhile and see how it affects the motor over a period of time. Depending on how long that holds up the final evolution will be a block built with forged pistons and rods (crank is forged from the factory) and higher-end turbo setup. And of course, all the suspension and chassis mods that are needed to support the power. You’re spot on about the sleeper-ability of the Camry though, I didn’t even know these existed until a couple years ago. I was looking for a CB accord when I found my first old Camry. They’re classy as hell and deserve love but the aftermarket is either dried up or nonexistent so it’ll be a lot of custom love.

I'm glad you're feeling it! :D It's hard to capture that whenever you choose the video topic and then try to script or storyboard and shoot around it. It's pretty obvious by the video salad nature of progressions that I just film myself working, clown myself in the voiceover, and work towards an automotive victory that's worthy of a video. If I planned my shots, it would strip the candor and fun out of shooting anything. It's 4x more work in the voiceover, but lets me have a lot more freedom with capturing the video. That's what keeps it fun for _me_. If I'm having fun doing it, you'll have more fun watching it. Thank you for picking up on that! It takes a whole lot of time, and it takes work. It lacks any and all structure, but this is what it does. That's how I have to do it.

Been following for a looong time Jafro. Because of your channel and information I started collecting parts for my 2000 jeep wrangler's eventual turbo 2.9L stroker build from its 2.5 amc designed engine. Getting married drained the jeep fund. But I'm excited to get back on track.

I know someone who built that setup, supercharged, in a 2000 Cherokee and ran 11's at 122mph at my local track. That thing was SICK! Hysterically fast. Faster than my GSX. The guy driving it was totally un-filtered and hilarious. I had to know what was going on with it? I saw him make 8 consistent passes on that thing, all 11's, and a Cherokee looks ridiculous launching and pulling the driver's side wheel off the ground. Left everyone speechless. He beat a stock CTS-V, badly. Tree'd him AND ran 5mph faster. Be careful with that build! lol!

Jafro, I’m taking on a rebuild of a galant vr4 4g63 engine and cylinder head. Love the videos. Wouldn’t attempt this without them as a resource and dsm tuners. Do you have one simple piece of advice for me on my journey to rebuild this long lock? Cheers.

Hello I would suggest a hardness test at an engine shop. Mine failed and I found another luckily but they are getting rare.
@mikescherrer4923
@mikescherrer4923 2 года назад
I just built my first 4g63 for my gsx using the same resources, and my biggest thing was not hurrying and being willing to wait for parts or tools to do things correctly. Also, find yourself a good machine shop that produces reliable results, and buy the guy coffee or donuts when you stop in so he likes you, because otherwise he won’t. If anything is out of spec, stop and fix it. I was lucky and my block and my parts all played pretty well out of the box, but that isn’t always the case. Don’t accept anything for face value that you have the ability to second guess. But most of all - have fun, it’s actually a pretty rewarding experience. I was actually pretty sad to take down my improvised clean room.
@lilusername1004
@lilusername1004 2 года назад
@@mikescherrer4923 that’s good stuff Mike, I have all winter to get her dialed in so I will do my best to be patient. Local machine shop isn’t 4g63 exclusive by any means but they seem like they can do what I’m looking for. I might even buy them a torque plate instead of donuts haha.

@@lilusername1004 I wanted this to happen so bad... I love seeing the Mikes answering this. I scratched my head and spent time today helping my elderly parents with yard work while thinking about what I could suggest to you beyond what I've produced. To me, a 4g63 is a 4g63, and it's only because in all my years doing this I have seen atypical problems that some experience, but no two engines have failed in exactly the same way, or for exactly the same reason. Rarely have these failures been caused by defects. You probably know about GalantVR4.org, but you mentioned 'tuners. The best thing I could come up with while hauling yard debris based on what I've seen on galants is that you should soak every nut and bolt on that chassis and engine in penetrating oil every day for a week before you start. You want every part and bolt to be in as good of shape as you can keep them because they're not making any more of them. If one starts giving you trouble, put some heat on it before you continue wrenching. The car is at least 30 years old.
