What Wind Speed is Safe for Kayaking - Estimating Wind Speed using the Beaufort Scale

Each of us must develop a personal assessment of what wind speed is safe for kayaking based on our own equipment and limitations. This Beaufort Scale video shows how to estimate the speed without an anemometer (wind gauge) so you can see how bad you are going to suck if you go out in higher winds. Personally, sustained winds of 8 mph are my cutoff because, at that level, the wind will gust above that and make it hard to paddle. Kayaking in high winds is NO fun, so you need to know how to estimate wind speed before you get into an unsafe situation.

It goes without saying that fishing is dangerous as a result of the fast water, slick rocks and other hazards that occur in random, unexpected places. You need to exercise caution, particularly in the spring when the water is high or during rapid changes in tide before you fish anywhere. You should always wear a life vest when fishing. Also, a wading staff will help you keep your balance as you walk on the shoreline or wade.
The bottom line is that you must make a judgment regarding acceptable behavior and risk and not rely on the opinions expressed here. The regulations governing legal access to fishing locations may change at any time, and it is your responsibility to understand the law. Nothing expressed should be construed as encouraging you to trespass on private property or violate a regulation.

I just scanned 8 websites on this topic and a max of 12mph was mentioned most often. As I'm only an occasional kayaker, and not so experienced, my own limit is 10mph (16kph) and I usually check the wind forecast for each of the few hours that come after I get in the water as I want to see if the winds are set to strengthen also. My 10mph is based not on the steady wind forecast, but on the 'gusting-to' wind forecast. I often cancel rather than take chances out on the ocean bay.

Smart! People underestimate the waves wind can kick up.

Thanks I was interested in finding out how to judge wind speed while on the water.

Maybe it was my time in the Army, but I have always wanted to know how bad the "suck" was compared to how bad it could be!

In south TX 15 mph is the norm. I go out in the morning against the wind around 12 mph then in the evening come back with the wind at 17 mph. Of course now with my trolling motor everything is different. Even 20 mph will go across the ICW to the calm side. Maybe fish in the river or bayou.

I do not mind the exercise as much as I do the waves it kicks up. At 65, I need the workout to stay trim so my wife does not dump me on the side of the road. My kayak sucks since it does not have scupper holes and any water that slops over the side stays in the boat. That's what keeps me off when the winds are higher.

I am 60 and the reason I put the motor on was I like to do a lot of bass fishing and maneuver the boat while casting for bass. Also allows me to go out in stronger winds. Paddling against those high winds and waves can wear you out and blow you back to where you started .LOL

I've got a motor and need to start using it for the very reason you describe!

interesting I remember rec kayaking with my uncle and we paddled 13 miles out in a lake the wind is strong I had no clue I just learned to paddle a week before and I guess all i could do was to deal with it. I mainly paddled up the lake to a river mouth and camped on the shore line for a week where the wind was blowing like the desert

So paddling is the concern? That's what I worry about with wind anyway, when I have a tailwind going out I keep the distance to no more than I will have the stamina to paddle back into the headwind.

might consider going out in 40mph+ winds in a tandem yak but with Chuck Norris 😆

Actually, I already have footage on how to deal with that. It centers on crab pots and tide. I need to get it edited and posted.

nice. ill look forward to that. i got lost out there once. but i had a full stringer so it was ok. my excuse for getting home late was understood at the first sight of the stringer. all questions were answered immediately. 👍 it was still scary though.

The one I used in the video broke. It only cost about 12 bucks on Amazon (amzn.to/2iJXyv2) but it kept losing the settings and was difficult to turn on. I replaced it with this version that has worked much better for $23.
